Navanlny describes his recovery process: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/alexei-navalny-shares-photo-speaks-initial-despair-when-waking-coma-n1240543

Guy went to Yale in the states too, should have just stayed. Russia will never be an ally of the United States and they should be treated exactly as China.

I would predict the U.S. would go to war with Russia within a few decades if they had any economic power, but they couldn't afford war. Their economy is already in shambles. I don't think their military is equipped well enough either.

Total +1 to that.

Russia is literally as bad as China, though they just don't have the economic power to be as much of a force when it comes to sanctioning them. China has that going for them, which has let them get away with being a piece of shit nation for awhile, but Russia is just something else.

Most of Russias economy is HIGHLY dependent on the oil/gas market (which is very weirdly highly connected with the Europe) which is something that countries should focus on to shut down Russia.

Russia is a piece of shit country (alongside China) both should be dealt with like enemies to the USA.

482  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump has declared that he’ll ban Tiktok over privacy concerns!!! on: September 20, 2020, 04:54:51 AM
^ Just this news in my locale language where they mentioned that Trump is not happy with the majority of company is still owned by the Bytedance company.

Another Chinese company called Tencent is not moving their head office to Singapore since India banned Pubg and also they concern about USA as next to ban so they are taking actions early to save them from huge losses.

Yeah I highly doubt PUBG (and TenCent holdings as a whole) is suspect to getting knocked down for some stuff. TikTok is big and a data hog of American citizens. Pubg is really not the same IMO.

They best thing they can do, proactively, is to try to partner with American companies for retaining their data. This could be something that is more beneficial for these people if it's cheaper to host their data with someone like Amazon (and Microsoftr) instead of self hosted or another foreign competitor.

But this story about Trump and TikTok changes all the time, seems like Trump is now saying that he has agreed to the deal between TikTok, Oracle and Walmart. But with how the news works, things could change as quickly as tomorrow (or the next few hours, lol)

Little update to what I wrote above. WSJ is reporting that Trump is NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THE CURRENT DEAL as it still leaves ByteDance (TikTok owner) with majority ownership of US operations for TikTok. Tresuary department has responded to ByteDances complaints regarding the US's proposal with a counterproposal, pushing for Oracle to be the majority owner of US operations.

I get it, cause you don't want to go through all of this and then just end up with a chinese company still in control of the whole thing. Data may be stored in the US under the current ByteDance proposal, but what does it change if they have full control over the company who owns the data?

“My big concern is if all we’re doing is repackaging it and still keeping it as a predominantly Chinese government-run company, that would not set well with the original goals the president outlined,” - Mark Meadows

485  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to maintain your good health? on: September 17, 2020, 05:26:08 PM
That is the stupidity of the current FUD generated panic. To stay healthy, you need to get out in the fresh air, and to expose yourself to sunlight. You should also avoid reinfecting yourself by wearing those stupid monkey masks.

Like..... what.....?

Why would you even say this. Not sure what's going on here. A mask wouldn't be the reason that you got infected anyway.

BUT onto the topic here, about HEALTH. The best way to keep ontop of your health is making sure that you eat healthy foods (in a good mix), exercise, keep tabs on your mental health, and ensure that you visit your doctor often enough to ensure that you're not developing a health issue that a trained professional can pick out but you're unable to by yourself as you don't know any better.

Truly there isn't more to it.
486  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Alexei Navalny the next victim of the kremlin government!!! on: September 17, 2020, 05:17:22 PM
a small update on the state of health of A. Navalny

Quote
He’s fully aware of his condition, he’s fully aware of what happened and he’s fully aware of where he is.
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/14/world/europe/navalny-novichok.html

Thanks for the update, much appreciated.

Little update of my own regarding how Navalny was actually poisoned: CNN (and other outlets) is reporting that there is trace amounts of poison found on his water bottle from the hotel that he was staying at in Siberia. Further, CNN is saying that when hsi team notyiced that he had fallen ill that they had gathered a LOT of items in the room and put them in bags to ensure that everything could be tested. This was a way to try to find SOMETHING that could have potentially poisoned him. When the police came, they were interestingly interested in the water bottle.

So yeah, Russia did this but we all knew that already. This sends a clear message to anyone who wants to try to be opposition to Putin. Leaders of the world should rally against Putin and this. Not OKAY at all to just turn a blind eye on it just because 'cant confirm'

....

One would have to assume this strategy is continuing to be used in the election season. In fact, there are many suspicious accounts that have recently become active in the politics sub, including some that I believe to be purchased.

Keep this in mind when reading these types of threads.

Including this thread, whose author is essentially just doing a post and dump list of links. Probably the same one on a dozen forums.

I thought I hadn't gotten past Argument from Ridicule.

Four years in I still don't get why smart people like yourself support an illiterate buffoon like Trump, up to and including lowering themselves to his level. Back in 2016 I thought anyone who listens to Trump speaking for at least a few minutes would see right through him but here we are. So what's the secret? Does it involve an incantation? Large amounts of chemical substances? Generations of party loyalty? What is it?

It's not uncommon for two (or more) people to listen to the same talk, and have totally divergent opinions about the content, the presentation, and the speaker.

In my case, it's quite simple. Some years ago there was a company I used for various jobs, the CEO was somewhat like trump. Annoying, rude, said the wrong things at the wrong times, on and on. But guess what? Everyone used this guy because he was simply the best, if you wanted great work done on time error free at a great price, you used him.

So I would lean toward 'half autistic genius with poor social skills' and it would not surprise me that various people with certain preconceptions would only see 'illiterate buffoon.' But of those two descriptions, yours is wrong and mine is right.

Talking about 'suspicious accounts' for a second, I highly doubt that people are going to come here to try to influence the election in some way. Not sure if that's what's being spoken about here, but we're like a niche of a niche of a niche in terms of the amount of members here are going to vote and actually care about the election. Plus ya know, you'd have to be in the US.

While I do go back and forth every so often about what I think about Trump (honestly, it may be the weather, lol) I don't think he is a dumb person. I think he knows EXACTLY what he is doing a lot of the time. Some things, obviously I can't explain with that, such as the Woodward book and his statements regarding Covid. But I do think that he wields his power of the Republican party in a very interesting way.

The guy can literally say whatever he wants now cause people have grown to expect it. Interesting, right? While his approval ratings have also been a bit wonky, you'd expect with the constant coverage of 'another trump scandal' every week, he'd be gone by now. But no.
488  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump: Former model Amy Dorris alleges sexual assault in 1997 on: September 17, 2020, 05:02:34 PM
How will this allegation affect the re-election chances Trump has?

Probably as much as the Tara Reade allegation that Joe Biden has levied against him; A whopping zero. There's been dozens of sexual assault allegations against Trump which haven't produced any evidence. If there's any sort of evidence against him that is released, that's when people, including me, will care.

Joe Biden is in the same corner. You have the Tara Reade allegation (I did a detailed write up here which is a fair assessment imo https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5237990.msg54406308#msg54406308). You also have a few women who've came forward accusing Joe Biden of touching them inappropriately, who Kamala Harris has said she believes, yet that doesn't seem to sway people.

Comparing Trumps parade of women with accusations from sexual assault to rape over the past few decades to Bidens single allegation of finger rape and a bunch of 'he made me feel uncomfortable/hugged me too long/kissed the back of my head' allegations isn't really fair.  Neither is 'I will care when there's evidence', imo, you might as well just say you don't care because the chances of someone having a video of the assault is nearly zero and any other evidence wouldn't be enough.  All you can do is look at the information available and form an opinion.

Also just want to make it clear that Kamala said she believed the accusers that when women were coming forward about him doing inappropriate things like kissing them on the back of the head or putting his hand on their back for too long or rubbing noses with them.  It was a year before Tara Reade said he finger banged her without consent.  Lots of conservative media are intentionally making the situation out as if Kamalas "them" included Reade. (this is not in response to your comment about Kamala Gyfts, I don't think you misrepresented the situation)

Even with all of this, I agree with Gyfts in saying that this totally doesn't matter and it's not going to effect anything for the election. I know some liberals are going to agree with you in saying that there is only credible case against Biden and there are so many against Trump.

But I think this boils down to -- well you're both probably rapist and horrible people. But here we are, you're both the frontrunners for your respective parties. Nothing will come of this at all, and we're all just going to ignore it in the coming weeks. I suppose a CRAZY October surprise could happen which changes the fate of this race, but I don't know.

Fun fun fun.
489  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ben Shapiro Leaves California (taking his business). White flight starting? on: September 17, 2020, 04:54:49 PM
Pretty sure that Ben Shapiro has been talking about making this move for awhile. It really didn't make sense that he stayed as long as he did, given the fact that he is very anti EVERYTHING THAT CALIFORNIA STANDS FOR and then stayed there.

I truly thought he was in Texas or something along those lines, but lol that's a NO.

But it does make sense that he is leaving though, given the fact that California taxes are INSANE and there is no reason for him to be there anyway. It's not like he runs a manufacturing company, he runs a online company that can be moved at any point.
490  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why we need Alternate Cryptocurrencies on: September 17, 2020, 04:48:34 PM
..... We don't need alternative cryptocurrencies. We need cryptocurrencies that are going to bring REAL change (in regards to technology) to the table that'll allow for people to be their own bank effectively and cheaply. No reason to just spit out random coins for no reason.

We have left the 'altcoin ICO bubble though' people are just spitting out random coins with shitty names and a whitepaper that is a lot of fluff with no real information on it. What people are doing now (IMO) are bringing new technologies to the table that'll be able to help the entire space advance from the standstill we're at right now.

I know not a lot of people in Bitcoin like ETH, but watching the amount of growth in the DEFI space is very interesting. Uniswap is one of the projects that amazes me as you're able to trustlessly trade tokens without an intermediary. What I really want to see though is cross chain atomic swaps.
491  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Scientists find possible signs of life on Venus on: September 17, 2020, 04:44:27 PM
...

But yeah, this fascination with life elsewhere doesn't make sense to me. The amount of time it would take for another society / civilization to get here would be insane. Nothing that is really possible with this level of technology.

Either sentient creatures exist at various places in the Universe, and each is within a space time bubble that effectively limits it from contacting the others, or some of them have developed methods of communication or travel that overcome the light speed limitation.

Of "methods of communication" the simplest would be a means of signaling that would essentially say "We are here!" Far more difficult and unlikely would be everything requiring physical transport of biological creatures. Even getting to 9/10 lightspeed is incredibly difficult and for travel between stars, too slow.

Finding microbes on Mars or Venus would solve nothing. They could have gotten there from Earth, or from comets.

Yeah when I was talking about this level of technology, I was talking about the level of technology that WE are at as humans. I'm personally not going to theorize about the possibilities of other technologies and what they've achieved. Totally possible for them (if they exist) to be much further in communication / travel, but no evidence currently exists to further that claim.

You're right about the communication being the best way to just let people know we're here (or they're there). Traveling to them is a different story.
492  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Scientists find possible signs of life on Venus on: September 17, 2020, 06:53:14 AM
According to The Guardian, scientists believe the discovery of a rare gas in the clouds of Venus could indicate signs of microbial life on the planet.

Quote
Traces of a pungent gas that waft through the clouds of Venus may be emanations from aerial organisms – microbial life, but not as we know it.

Astronomers detected phosphine 30 miles up in the planet’s atmosphere and have failed to identify a process other than life that could account for its presence.
source: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/sep/14/scientists-find-gas-linked-to-life-in-atmosphere-of-venus

What do you think? Could this be the first evidence of extraterrestrial life?

When a chemical reaction or process resulting in an end product is not known, it would be unwise to suggest that life is the cause, simply because that is a cause we know of on Earth.

...It is also found in Jupiter's turbulent atmosphere, where it forms in the planet's hot interior and reacts with other compounds in the upper atmosphere.[16] The abiotic synthesis of phosphine takes enormous amounts of energy, such as in the planet-sized convective storms of gas giants.[17]
Phosphine has also been detected in the atmosphere of Venus, where its origin is currently unexplained. The paper announcing the discovery suggests that the phosphine "could originate from unknown photochemistry or geochemistry, or, by analogy with biological production of PH3 on Earth, from the presence of life".[18][19][20] Venus lacks the high temperatures and pressures to form phosphine the way gas giants such as Jupiter do, requiring an alternative explanation for its presence.[20]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphine

Yeah..... I really doubt this is going to end up being something.

Literally just something that hits the news every so often that people eat up. Don't know if people are more interested in finding another place to go and live if we are to use up all the resources here, OR if they're just interested if in if there's some sort of alien live somewhere.

But yeah, this fascination with life elsewhere doesn't make sense to me. The amount of time it would take for another society / civilization to get here would be insane. Nothing that is really possible with this level of technology.
493  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Well I had to fill in a contact tracing form this morning. on: September 17, 2020, 06:49:54 AM
If someone wants to enter fake details thats their choice.

If someone is high risk, they probably should enter their details honestly to stay informed.
Well, it's really up to someone if he wants to give an honest detail or a fake one. But giving a fake detail is kinda selfish, don't you think? I mean, what if he is infected (just aysmptomatic, let's say) and went to an establishment with other people in it. What if he infects other people even if it's unintentional? How would the infector be found if all he gave was a fake detail? What if he infects more people?

Point is, giving small details about you honestly won't harm you. It might even save you and others from the grave danger of the virus. Just saying, tho.

I mean there really is no reason to provide fake details, unless you're someone that cares about privacy and you think that someone is out to get you. Which I mean, kinda fair I guess. if you really do care about privacy and someone tells you to fill out a form to eat, just go home and make some food for yourself -- or go somewhere else.

But really if you're fully health the list is supposed to help you. As people at the store / public health officials, can reachout to you and say you may have been in contact with someone who has COVID -- which allows for you to get tested and keep people out of harms way.

494  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Well I had to fill in a contact tracing form this morning. on: September 17, 2020, 12:03:23 AM
Seems that there is a legal start to the nullify the illegal pandemic activities of State governors. Of course, maybe the judge has his eye on the idea that people want to open up, and he can become president in a few years if he works it right.

'Unconstitutional!' Federal Court Judge Shreds Pennsylvania Covid Shutdown

A federal judge in Pennsylvania yesterday blew the top off of the massive authoritarian over-reach by governors throughout the country, ruling that Pennsylvania's governor and state health official violated the US Constitution in exercising what it claimed were "emergency powers" in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Will the judge's ruling begin to break down the wall of authoritarianism in the US? Also today, the state of Texas has employed shockingly inaccurate and shoddy testing and reporting methods, resulting in policy decisions being made without accurate information. As even the New York Times has noticed deep problems in Texas, state health authorities are rushing to clean up the mess they've made of things. With new and more accurate numbers showing far fewer infections, will the governor finally life his tyrannical restrictions on Texans?

Cool

While none of us (on here) like to see the overreach of government, I highly doubt that regular people are going to rally behind this cause. I'm all for stopping covid infections and trying to save peoples lives, but I do understand that government uses the excuse of 'saving lives' as there go to when it comes to taking away peoples rights.

They did it with 9/11, and I suppose it's still up for debate if these things that governors did will stay permanent. Bad precedent is set if this whole thing is used by governors to just shut down their economy whenever they want to for political purposes.

But yeah, here we are.
495  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Machine Learning and the Death of Accountability on: September 16, 2020, 11:36:16 PM
I don't know. I want to be convinced, but there's an argument that we don't and can't know whether these ML debuggers are fair. We get into a 'who watches the watchmen'* kind of argument. If we are saying that the way to understand ML 'thought' patterns is to use more ML, I don't think it's the answer. I appreciate that this sort of thing will be used, but I can't see that it will open the black box and make everything understandable to us.

How much understanding do you really need or want? To use a banal example, most of us don't know how cars work yet we drive them and even occasionally kill other people with them without questioning their basic functions.

OTOH we tend to be so extremely risk-averse these days that I'm quite certain any AI will be held to a much higher standard than humans are, so for example if an AI black box kills someone it will likely be crippled/limited/banned until some additional safeguards are built into it, even if statistically it performs better than humans.

*I didn't, but then I'm not a fan of superhero movies. The X-Men ones were okay, but steadily deteriorated as the sequels progressed. And I have no idea how Kamala became Sansa Stark. A question for a different thread.

I have zero clue what this is about so I must be way older or way younger than you... I'd bet on the former Grin

I feel like for a lot of these new uses of technology (think, AI Lawyer) a real certified lawyer (by the bar) is going to, obviously, have to govern what happens at the end of the process. Can't just have a virtual lawyer set something up and then trust it not to make a mistake when there are hundreds of thousands of laws that are everchanging. Plus for liability purposes, people would still want the 'final look' to be done from a real lawyer.

But slowly these machines will learn that last process and then be able to do everything by themselves. Pretty crazy, but that's the future.

But yes, we don't need to know everything that we interact with -- I don't know how email works and I use it everyday. Same sort of thing with a large amount of the pieces of tech we use daily.
496  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump has declared that he’ll ban Tiktok over privacy concerns!!! on: September 16, 2020, 10:47:59 PM

Almost forgot we had a thread about this on here. Crazy the amount of news stories that we go through in the span of a month.

But Oracle is the one that was picked, Kushner has said the deal is currently being reviewed by the US. It seems like this deal isn't going to check off all of the boxes that Trump set up, because ByteDance doesn't want to give up control of the company.

Oracle (if approved) will be a trusted partner that'll (probably) host all of the US data and ensure that it isn't being given to ByteDance in anyway.

So yeah, here are some sources on that:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-bytedance-tiktok-oracle-whiteho/white-houses-kushner-says-oracles-tiktok-deal-being-reviewed-idUSKBN2661WW

This is great news, finally something happening against this data storage of Chinese companies. Will this only affect American accounts or all of North America? And what about Europe? We are having the same issues over here. I wish European politicians would have a stricter approach towards Chinese companies.

I'm pretty SURE this is just the American side of the business. Other countries may join in and try for force China to do the same sort of thing, though they also face the blowback of the Chinese government attacking (regulatory attack) against their companies in. America is a bit of an outlier in regards to the amount of power they wield in geopolitics.

But yeah, I think this is JUST for US operations / data collection.
497  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump has declared that he’ll ban Tiktok over privacy concerns!!! on: September 15, 2020, 07:51:41 PM
Timely bump.

It seems that neither Microsoft nor Oracle have been able to buy Tiktok, and we're right at the original September 15 deadline. Anyone else think that ultimately no ban will be made and Trump's threats will just fizzle away?

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/09/14/trump-tiktok-sale-china-414724

...Trump issued an executive order requiring ByteDance to cease transactions in the U.S. effective Sept. 20 because of concerns about its ties to the Chinese government. He later signed a separate executive order giving the company 90 days to sell TikTok to a U.S. company, adding that the deal would need the administration's approval.

So Trump's just going to keep extending the deadline while he's waiting for results until some other world event distracts him from it?

498  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Well I had to fill in a contact tracing form this morning. on: September 15, 2020, 07:21:49 PM
It is no longer voluntary in the UK. If you don't fill in the form, then you don't get served in the cafe. Of course you can walk around in the supermarket as much as you like without providing any details.

I guess that my main point is that the UK government is squandering money on this totally useless bit of fear mongering, and it is trying to look as if it cares, whilst it is cutting money on other essential medical services,  and on policing. It is also attempting to increase taxes to pay for its Mickey Mouse projects.

Isn't that voluntary though? If you choose not to do it, then you don't get served.

I would define NOT VOLUNTARY as something that is mandated by government / law to stop you from being served. Some businesses require you to wear certain types of attire or stuff along those lines if you want to eat there.

Not all businesses are mandated to do this, it's their choice as they want to avoid litigation.

I would have had more skepticism if they were using their credit card transactions to contact trace instead of having people voluntarily filling out the form themselves.

Takes 30 seconds, big deal.

+1 to that.

This isn't some crazy big brother conspiracy where every company is now forcing you to scan in or something along those lines. This is a way to protect companies from potential litigation.

He didn't sit for Woodwards first book about him, and I remember he was pissed when it came out.

Possible he thought 'that book made me look bad because I let them convince me not to talk to him.  I'm just going to tell him everything and then it will be a good book.  a great book.  the most incredible book you've ever seen etc...'

Also, Woodward is def up there among legendary journalists...might've just turned Trump on so much he couldn't say no.  And then went back 15 more times.

Yes he was, he blasted it as fake news. What's even better is that Trump is currently blasting the Woodward story as fake news and is actually now kinda just ignoring the whole scandal as a whole.

But I mean ignoring is a strategy in the Trump era of news. There's a new story every day, sometimes even every hour. The American voter forgets things so quickly, so yeah.

Crazy stuff though.

Not sure why Trump is still doing this, but the base support isn't going away so I guess it's fair to assume that his base likes this and they think that the risk of COVID is non existent or low (and with that, blown out of proportion by the media / the dems)

I just don't understand how Woodward has this recording of Trump which anyone can go listen to which shows Trump KNOWS Covid is deadly. I just don't understand the rational behind still doing things like this. Are his advisors signing off on this sort of thing or like----?Huh??

Confusion, big confusion.

Can you make a coherent statement about your confusion or is your confusion confused?

Seems pretty clear to me.

Why does Trump keep doing stupid shit like sit for a bunch of interviews with the guy known for exposing Nixon and then tell him on the record that the virus he's been telling America is no big deal, is actually very deadly.

And now here we are, book comes out today death count almost 200k, .... it's a good question.

Yeah I mean I don't think what I wrote was too confusing to understand.

Why sit for an interview with someone who you know is looking for blood? (Which is something that me and SuchMoon were talking about in another thread) You know the guy is a good journalist as well who has the ability to take you down, or at least kill your approval ratings a bit. And you still sit down and talk to him? I don't get it.

Just avoid the media 1:1's and practice a ton with advisors on the best way to frame things, while still keeping the whole Trump style of things. As that is apart of his brand, and his supporters like it.
