1381  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Crypto taxes on: January 26, 2020, 04:53:14 PM
I don't think you guys understand how capital gains taxes work. This isn't new, and this isn't something which is just present in the crypto world. Every single market where trading occurs - Stocks, Bonds, Real Estate, Commodities, Forex, etc are all subject to capital gains taxes.

If you buy something at 100 and sell it at 1000 within a few weeks, then you're going to be subject to short term capital gains.
If you buy something at 100 and sell it at 1000 after a year of holding it, then you're going to be subject to long term capital gains.

Short term is going to be the most expensive, tax wise, of these two. These capital gains are also reliant on your income bracket.

But to address your question, as it revolves around 'what if I lose money, does the government pay me' Well kinda.

If you buy something and then sell it as a loss, you're able to 'take a loss' on your tax return and use the loss to lower your income for the year (you can only take a loss of 3000 per year on your return, so if need be you'll continue to carry forward your loss until you've exhausted it) So yes, the government does in a way compensate you for your losses.

Don't think that capital gains is just present in crypto. This is present everywhere.
1382  Economy / Economics / Re: Centralized exchanges have become the banks of the cryptocurrency world on: January 26, 2020, 04:37:02 PM
Centralized Exchanges are the banks of the crypto world, if you let them become that. In my mind, if you build a great coin with great features (think of something like XMR), then you're going to get the exchanges to accept you without having to dump tons of money on exchange fees. This is the thought process of 'if you build it, they'll come'

So this means instead of building from the top down (the top being exchanges) you have to built from the bottom up. This is going to take more time, more people, more resources in developing, and so on and so forth but you're going to be rewarded in saving on the exchange fees. A coin like XMR, builds itself in local communites first -- showing that it is a coin that is like cash again, anonymous. That's obviously going to be loved by regular people who value their privacy, people who are protecting their government, people doing shady things (drugs online, etc), online drug marketplaces, etc.

Now that you've built yourself into the community, the exchanges are going to slowly come. From the shitty / scammy ones, to the ones that are legitimate and big and have the volume required. At first you're probably going to have to run your own exchange -- a simple btc to XMR (or whatever your coin is here) conversion that people do manually (requires a good deal of trust)

They are the banks, but you can do a lot to dethrone them.
1383  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Miners at Oregon Mines (oregonmines.com) DOWN, and I am being ghosted. on: January 26, 2020, 04:26:14 PM
I noticed my machines were off as well. makes sense now. Anyone have any other hosting sites near the WA/OR area?

Honestly I'm not in the mining scene, though I'm going to guess that electric is pretty cheap in the WA/OR area. But from some looking through the internet, heres's what I've found. Can't vouch for any of these services, but this is it.

I found this one - http://bitcoinasichosting.com/ - on reddit, yet again I stress that I cant vouch for them or anything. Seems like they're based in Washington though.
Here's a site for one where you can get quotes from - https://www.quotecolo.com/bitcoin-mining-colocation/portland/ - Seems like they'll get quotes from a couple sites.

Yet again ya know, you're going to have to look into these sites and companies for yourself. But I did abit of the groundwork.

After a bit of research, I've come up with the following.

DG Rollins Mining, LLC is a company that was incorporated in Wyoming. It was incorporated in 2014, so it's been around for sometime at this point. The LLC was incorporated, though that doesn't mean that this is a legitimate company -- they could just be using another companies LLC and saying that it is theirs. It seems as if the company is also using agent, so the owners / Presidents information isn't put online, that's something a lot of companies do though so not surprising for this to happen.

The domain was purchased at NameCheap, and they're using the privacy option so the owner of the websites information isn't put online.

I've found a linkedin for the COO that you referenced (https://www.linkedin.com/in/terrencethurber)

What happens when you call the phone number? Is it disconnected or is no-one answering?

1385  Economy / Exchanges / Re: 3 Reasons You Need to Own a Crypto Card in 2020 on: January 24, 2020, 07:05:11 PM
To be honest, I've never liked the idea of crypto-cards. I believe they just profit of people that want to seem advanced, using crypto-currencies to pay for everyday items, and their cards are essentially the same as having a special "black" card, and there is very little actual benefit.

3. Regular MasterCard/visa cards are accepted worldwide as well. This isn't really a benefit over regular, fiat currencies/cards.
2. Same point as number 3.
1. Okay, fair.

Explain to me, why everyone should pay extra fees to utilise their crypto? Why not sell it and load up your bank account. You save money (even with shitty spreads) that way.

It only takes a few seconds to load your debit card while it takes 2-5 days to sell your crypto to your bank account. Not to mention that selling your crypto is not as easy as it is in Europe or the U.S.

Still, it just seems like most of the people don't mind throwing crypto's main features (being your own bank, low fees, and pseudonymity) out of the window if it means they'll gain speed and convenience in return.

I mean at that point, just sell a certain amount of your crypto and put it in a bank account, then use a credit card and pay it off with the balance in the account. The credit card is net 30, meaning that you'd have time to sell your crypto for whatever you bought.

I'll never understand using a crypto card, you get none of the benefits of traditional credit card usage (rewards, cashback, warranty protection, purchase protection, etc) When you use one of these crypto cards you'll kinda fucked, you pay pretty high fees for them to sell your crypto (which you could do yourself) -- Seems like Tap is around .5 - 1.5 percent (much higher then Coinbase Pro, Gemini, etc) and you get no rewards, cashback, warranty protection, etc.

I think these cards are a waste.

Just for my own info, does EClair charge you any sort of fee to top up in Bitcoin to the wallet? I know that Wallet of Satoshi charges a fee for this feature.
Eclair: create your own channel and pay on-chain transaction fees.
BlueWallet (custodial): no fee (other than normal transaction fee) when sending on-chain Bitcoin to get Lightning Bitcoin (but the other way around goes through an external site (which you can choose of course), for a fee)
Wallet of Satoshi: I think that's the wallet that required me to confirm my email address, but that part didn't work so I gave up.

Ah, wish EClair was on IOS then.

Wallet of Satoshi is fine in my opinion. Yet again, we're dealing with what I'd called -- negligible amounts of money say something like 5-10 -- at a time. These wallets do make it easier (much much easier) but they are custodial at the end of the day.
1387  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: ⚡ [List] The coolest LN services ⚡ on: January 23, 2020, 07:03:56 PM
When I think of custodial I don't think of Bitcoin anymore, I think of traditional banking where you're not fully in control anymore and the power of your funds is with someone else now. Yet again, not a real issue when dealing with small amounts of money -- though it still does present the problem of a lack of control -- something that we all love to talk about in the crypto community.
All valid points. However, exchanges hold hundreds of thousands if not millions of Bitcoins. Apparently many people don't seem to care about very large amounts, so a small amount for LN shouldn't matter.

Quote
I must stress yet again that I do like it, and have used it before. I just think that telling people that use Bitcoin, to go and use something that is inferior to Bitcoin in most ways (minus fees) isn't going to be easy. Sending Bitcoin to another person is easy -- you get their address and then you send it to them, that's it. No channels, no nodes, no making sure you're connecting with them.
I read about Bitcoin in the early versions, when transactions needed an IP-address to be sent Tongue I can't wait to see what LN looks like 10 years from now.

Quote
Even in LN sending money is the easiest thing (which in my mind, isn't that easy when comparing it to Bitcoin) receiving money is an entire different issue altogether.
True. LN is easy to pay a merchant with an automated system, but more complicated to pay another forum user. Sending 1 satoshi to an online LN casino is easier than withdrawing 1 satoshi.

Quote
Love the concept, and I do hope that it succeeds. It's just tough to think about right now, when there are still so many issues with the network.
It's still experimental, and improving. Give it time Smiley

Oh yes, without a doubt. The current issue with this is that most people haven't been around in Bitcoin to understand the phrase -- "not your keys, not your coins" -- they continue to think that it won't happen to them (like what most people say about certain things) and they think that the law will help to protect them and to make them whole in the event of an issue of some sort. I think this is a pretty common thought among Western people, who have certain laws in place in traditional banking like the FDIC (In the US), to protect them in the event of a bank run, bank failure, etc. That to them it's seems foreign that you'd be able to lose your coins, forever, if a hack was to occur.

But yes, I do think a good amount of the speculators don't care about this, but the Bitcoin OG's truly do.

Will without a doubt give it time, and try to push this to as many people as possible.

Just for my own info, does EClair charge you any sort of fee to top up in Bitcoin to the wallet? I know that Wallet of Satoshi charges a fee for this feature.
1388  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: ⚡ [List] The coolest LN services ⚡ on: January 23, 2020, 06:34:27 PM
I think the problem is that LN isn't easy to use for people.
It depends: I never tried setting up my own node, and didn't have the best connections when I set up channels in Eclair, but I'm very happy with a custodial wallet. It's very easy to use.
However, I funded it with 250,000 satoshi, but couldn't pay 206,000 satoshi to Coinpayments. It said I could try any amount and pay in parts, so I sent 5 sat first, but after that it didn't accept another payment. I ended up paying on-chain.

Quote
I love the potential of it, I can't argue with that. But it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth at the moment, I would think that a good deal of the people in crypto feel the same way.
A bit Tongue But I also think one way to improve LN, is by actually using it. Reward companies that accept it by buying from them, even though it's still a bit more complicated. I don't mind spending some effort to support something that can change the future of payments.

Here's 250 LN satoshi for the first person who claims it.
Nobody?

While there's no issue with using a custodial wallet, and it should be fine when you're dealing with such little amounts of money (like a checking account). The real issue in my mind lies in the fact that if the easiest way of using LN is a custodial wallet, that's a problem. It should be just as easy to use a custodial wallet as it is to use your own wallet.

1389  Other / Archival / Re: CryptoHopper - Updated GUI Trading Bot! Free 30 days license on: January 23, 2020, 04:12:45 PM
Why does the link appear to indicate a scam/phishing link? Can you prove the relationship between https://thecryptohopper Dot com and https://www.cryptohopper.com/?
I checked the company and it appears to be real, but the site above gives incorrect information. Can you confirm the link? Social media refer to that site and not the site mentioned in this topic.

It's clearly a scam. Some red flags:

1. The domain name is 1-day old (registered on NameCheap) where CryptoHopper uses TransIP (928 days old).
2. This website uses Sectigo for its SSL certificate, while the real one uses Cloudflare.
3. OP has been inactive for 1.5 months prior to posting this.

I've also made an account on the real website and then tried to log on to this website using the same credentials, that didn't work (not even an error message).

Ouch, the green trust is probably going to make some of the newbies think that this is legitimate. I'm going to send a message over to Cabalism to remove that (if we can confirm that this isn't this account has been compromised) to ensure that people don't jump on using this because of the green trust.

Wish the forum had 2FA or something along those lines to prevent this, but I guess it isn't possible at the moment.

Edit: Cabalism has updated his trust, back to neutral this hacked account goes Smiley

Pretty big fan of Lightning Spin - https://lightningspin.com/ - for the few times that I've used it, I've had a blast gambling a few bucks away and not spending anything (relatively) in fees.

Way ahead of you Tongue

Seriously though: good initiative, I like LN, and despite it's potential barely anyone talks about it.

Lightning Network Stores directory lists many sites that accept LN. Some really cool, some totally worthless.

I like lightning.gifts too, it lets you create LN vouchers. Note that this is of course custodial, and risking your funds is entirely up to you.
Here's 250 LN satoshi for the first person who claims it.

Kriptode.com has another nice feature: earn/buy/sell/follow/spam Tweets or other things for LN.

I think the problem is that LN isn't easy to use for people. Anytime I've tried to use it I just run into tons of issues that require a good deal of research to figure out -- either my node (I think that's the term) can't find a path to the other person, or I click the send button like six times and then randomly it finds a path. I know it's still being developed, though from someone that goes from Bitcoin (which is SO EASY) going to LN feels like something which (at the moment) is steps backwards.

I love the potential of it, I can't argue with that. But it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth at the moment, I would think that a good deal of the people in crypto feel the same way.
1391  Economy / Economics / Re: Cryptocurrencies have won with court in India – for how long? on: January 23, 2020, 03:47:19 PM
These questions come up all the time, and my answer to them is always going to stay the same. They're going to win until the banks notice that bitcoin can disrupt them and can remove their monetary control. At that point, regulators and banks are going to issue some pretty crazy laws regarding Bitcoin to try to kill it. And honestly, it will probably kill the price of Bitcoin if something like this was to happen -- I don't think it would kill the usage of it in the country, but the price would take a hit as retail investors would be scared.

Think of if the US was to issue a EO or pass a law regarding the banning of Bitcoin. People would freak the fuck out and sell cause a good amount of 'usage' in this space if just speculation by people who want to get rich. Nothing against Bitcoin, but when people see something go from pennies to 20000 in the course of a couple years, the gamblers typically come out to play.
1392  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "Virginia Governor Issues SECRET EXECUTIVE ORDERS to TAKE TOTAL POWER..." on: January 23, 2020, 03:43:13 PM
What is important is the headline is sensational of course. This is not something literally every media outlet does, no of course not. These insane power grabbing laws introduced are secondary to the fact you don't like the way the headline was written. Gotta have priorities and focus on the important bits right?

Introduced and ISSUED are two very different things.

Introduced would mean that the bill has just put been put forth by someone in the chamber. That gives it as much of a chance as anything else in passing. Issued would mean that the bill / executive order has been issued as law and it will be enforced. Which is why this is the problem in the verbiage used.

They're also not executive orders, which would've been active upon being issued. They're bills.

This is like my writing a story about how some random state representative in south dakota wants to ban cell phones for people under 21 and then making the headline "SOUTH DAKOTA ISSUES LAW THAT BANS CELLPHONES FOR PEOPLE UNDER 21" This isn't true and it's misleading, it's bullshit all around. Crazy bills are introduced everyday, that doesn't mean there's a chance of them being passed.

If the governor and the majority of the legislature had come out and said they were supporting the bills and wanted to see them passed, that's one thing. But as of right now this is nothing.

1393  Other / Politics & Society / Re: An Inside Story of how Carlos Ghosn Beat Japan's Security on: January 23, 2020, 04:41:36 AM
Finally, a story on how Carlos Ghosn, the fugitive former leader of Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA, got the better of Japan's tight security. It was unimaginable at first how he made his way outside Japan and into Beirut without anyone getting the smallest hint.

This one's like a fictional read.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2020-01-14/how-nissan-s-carlos-ghosn-was-smuggled-out-of-japan?utm_content=business&cmpid=socialflow-twitter-business&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&utm_source=twitter

Links to paid access sites suck ass.  What's the point?  Even if I were interested in the story, I'm not paying subscription fees for access to a one-time read.  There aren't even any critiques or user reviews to let us know if it's worth a plug nickle.  Guess I'll wait for the made-for-TV movie.

Paywall destroyer for anyone wants it. https://github.com/iamadamdev/bypass-paywalls-chrome Works on Chrome,Brave, anything that has chrominium im pretty sure.

But Carlos Ghosen beat the Japanese security with a suitcase, he put himself in an instrument of some sort and got through secrurity. That's some shit STRAIGHT out of a movie. I think he'll be caught at some point, though who knows if he'll just be able to sit on a private island in the middle of nowhere and watch the sunset until the end of his days.

He seems to be active in the media, as he's trying to say that he's innocent and Japan is painting him in a bad light as a double standard. https://www.ft.com/content/20b853d2-3c38-11ea-b84f-a62c46f39bc2
1394  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What's going to happen in International Court of Justice (ICJ) ? on: January 23, 2020, 04:38:23 AM
There is going to be a massacre trial in the international court. Rohingya "The most oppressed Nations in the world" is the victim of this genocide.
What about your opinion of this trial? I think the court will give the right verdict  ‍and the world will see a fair trial for humanity. We are all waiting for the time.

The thing is, would Myanmar care or a bigger question, would ASEAN care? I don't know if the IC can implement whatever verdict they'll come up with.

If this was the EU, there wouldn't even be a need for an IC case, the EU would already put penalties on the member. Heck, they're again already working out penalties on Poland and Hungary refusing migrants.

No such thing with ASEAN. Though some countries where the Rohingya fled has complained, pretty much everyone ignored what's happening and there was no move against Myanmar. I expect that the bloc would proceed as if nothing happened even after the IC result comes out.

I'll never understand why the EU is going to put/ has put penalities on countries that don't want to accept migrants. Like holy hell -- most countries would be fine with accepting migrants if they were able to do their own proper screening of said migrants. But no the EU doesn't allow that and just wants to dump unvetted people into your country, insane. I'll NEVER UNDERSTAND IT.
1395  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "Virginia Governor Issues SECRET EXECUTIVE ORDERS to TAKE TOTAL POWER..." on: January 23, 2020, 04:32:28 AM
I'm pretty sure you understand that none of these executive orders and that all of these are just proposed bills in either the VA Senate or the House. Nothing has been passed, and nothing is going to change in VA. Take this money and invest it in the stock market, this is the best sure fire way to becoming wealthy.
I see some cases where many stock prices are falling. I mean the stock market has volatility too (maybe less than crypto market).

So what do you mean by saying "best sure fire way"? Is there a stock that surely growing stably in the stock market? And how big the percentage you can get from money that you put in?

Yes, stock prices go up and down. But in the grand scheme of things (since before the Great Depression until now) the stock market has grown at a rate of about 10 percent a year ~ 7 percent after inflation yearly. Our best indicator, at least in something that's been around as long as the stock market, is past performance.

Crypto is volatile, volatile as FUCK.

Just to show that, some of the worst entire YEARS in the stock market have shown 70 percent losses (Great depression)and the most recent losses have been around 50 percent or so (during the great recession of 2008. In crypto we see swings of 90 percent in a day, sometimes every few days (with some coins)

1397  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Millionnaire mind : How to be rich? on: January 23, 2020, 02:00:23 AM
Well there's a much easier way to be (or to become rich)

1. Be born into money. That's without a doubt going to be the simplest way to be rich (I know, I'm messing around but this is the best way).

2. Work a good job (pay wise) and save a large amount of your salary. Take this money and invest it in the stock market, this is the best sure fire way to becoming wealthy.

2b. To further complement 2, have a side hustle of some sort to make money that isn't based on the amount of hours you work but instead is based on scaling your side hustle. This could be something like real estate, consulting, web dev work, etc.

+Merited.

Edit: Ah, I see that fixed fee is more pointing to the FIXED RATE portion of things on these websites. Going to be hard to find the fees, as they're going to be ever changing depending on the spread. Welp.
