Ugh -- what? The US isn't a country that is restricing the news, social media, etc. You're still going to be able to know what is going on in the world and be able to connect with people online. It's a different world but it's only for a little while and we'll be able to recover if we all do our part.

I misspelled it. In my opinion, every person needs freedom of movement per se without any restrictions and if a person is deprived of this freedom for a long time it can cause many psychological diseases. Neither Internet, nor TV could yet replace a trip to the sea or a rest in a medical and preventive sanatorium.

Ah, this is about freedom of movement instead of just the physical borders. Got it, just wanted to make sure that that is what you were talking about here.

I think this is an extraordinary circumstance where it does make a good deal of sense to deal with these temporary restrictions to ensure the health of everyone in the society. I know that many aren't going to agree with this, and people do think that government is going to grow in power b/c of this (I agree with that) -- but I'd rather have to stay inside for a bit longer rather then have more people die. But that's just me, I know many are going to disagree.

badecker still stuck in the scripts of january myths
as always he is always last to wise up

if he was in a suicide cult. he would turn up late. see all the dead bodies. but still proceed to kill himself because following his cult means more to him than realise people are dying

Heh, like the sentiment but I don't think we need to devolve into personal insults.

But what BaDecker is saying is bullshit, many people died all around the world from this virus and people have to understand that this is MUCH worse then the past viruses that have come to the country. People are dying, stay home and do your part.

I watch a decent chunk of most of the briefings though, and when Trump is off script or taking questions, it's just a shit show.

I was watching with my mom the other day, and she would roll over in a fit of laughter ever time he said "ChHinA."

I prefer the method of diluting blood with a sufficient amount of alcohol (60% is it?). Someone should slip this idea to Trump, maybe he'll make booze free in the next trillion dollar stimulus bill.

Stills are the new ventilators!

Trump is truly horrible in a press briefing environment, obviously moreso when he goes off script. If he'd just accept that he doesn't know everything, and that's fine, he'd be alright -- but he's hellbent on proving that he knows more about the virus then the experts. Not sure what he thinks is to gain from doing so. Defer to the experts and stay on script and you'll be fine.

In Dems news, Joe Biden is having trouble picking a VP candidate: He doesn't know how progressive his African American VP should be (actual notification I got on my phone) - https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/28/biden-vice-president-2020-elections-212555 - I'll try to find a screen of that notification though.
1024  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Prolonged border closure on: April 28, 2020, 04:43:26 PM
I don't even think that border closure is going to be an issue when discussing the problem of people feeling isolated from one another. The real issue is social distancing and mandatory quarantine -- that's the culprit in the dilemma you've drawn up. I support social distancing and quarantine though, people should stay away from one another to ensure that we're done with this virus ASAP instead of prolonging this and killing more people in the process.

Most likely, this life will resemble life in the Soviet Union during the Iron Curtain. Many people can no longer withstand the restrictions on movement, although not much time has passed. If this regime continues for a year or more, many people will simply go crazy.

Ugh -- what? The US isn't a country that is restricing the news, social media, etc. You're still going to be able to know what is going on in the world and be able to connect with people online. ... firstly reported for being blog / shitty site spam with no real credibility. Even more so cause you're a newbie on this forum and probably just trying to inflate your post count.

But -- That's juat not true in the least. Most people on the east coast (and other areas) have already heard of someone in their family or community have either been infected from this and have recovered, or have died. I've had a few already myself with friends of mine, so I'm unsure of why people think that this is a hoax created by the government or something along those lines.

People are dying. Look at the pictures out of Italy with mass graves. People are dying, this isn't some conspiracy...
1026  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why are the markets going up ,? but biz and unemployment is high ... on: April 28, 2020, 02:34:32 PM
The stock market isn't the economy, and we all knew that priority to this. Economic data and everything regarding it (unemployment numbers, gdp, etc) is a lagging indicator of what is going on, it's pretty much telling you what has happened for the prior quarter but makes no attempt to forecast for the future (typically)

On the otherhand, the stock market tries to project where the biggest companies in the US (or the US market as a whole, as the market does include small, mid, and large firms) is going to be in the future.

Pretty good video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ECqDaPjjV0

That's it Tash! You've cracked the case of the mysterious corona virus!  Well done!

Ahahahah, I've literally heard some conspiracy theories like this. The ones I've heard didn't go as far though, some people were saying that hospitals were way overreporting the amount of deaths from COVID-19 to get more money. I don't think people understand that you can't just report someone dead and move on, you're going to be filling out a lot more paperwork and you're going to get caught very quickly if you're lying.

People folks. People.

Overall I think most hospitals are suffering financially since elective surgeries have all been postponed.  Elective surgeries are expensive, and the bills usually get paid.  Now they gotta pay out a ton of overtime to deal with mostly old people on medicaid or poor uninsured people.

Oh totally - an uncle of mine had his knee replacement cancelled due to this (this was a month and a half ago or so) whole crisis and we fully understand why. Most of the candidates for these elective surgeries, at least the ones that are popular like knee replacements, are going to be older people who have a higher chance of death b/c of it.

Great move from a healthcare perspective to cancel these, as you're caring for the patient -- but from a financial side of things, this is going to hurt. But the government has provided a large deal of benefits for hospitals and individual doctors suffering from all of this.
1028  Other / Politics & Society / News paywall blocking extension - updated so it gets into more sites on: April 28, 2020, 06:18:33 AM
I've posted about this before on the forums, though it would be helpful to those that are going from website to website finding the newest news on the Coronavirus. Been a few updates on the extension that blocks paywalls on most major news sites. Extension works on both Firefox (through their regular extensions page) and chrome (through developer mode, explained on github)

Great program to use, just updated it recently and it seems to work again on all the sites that I use (WSJ, Ny Times, etc) Here's the link to it - https://github.com/iamadamdev/bypass-paywalls-chrome - I'm not the person who created this, the guy on github (Iamadamdev) is. Direct all support and questions to him.

Isn't this idea just second life done again? And whats with that highly dubious url?

Fortnite is just another iteration of something that has been going for years. You could just name minecraft or several MMOs.

This is not a "new version" of internet, its the same internet, your games and simulations are simply getting more immersive, that's all.

And sure, i wouldn't mind getting paid in a virtual world with bitcoin so i could use them in real life for the pesky physical needs. Right now this is somewhat possible often doing gray or forbidden activities (the so called real money trading). But of course some games do allow it.

I have always thought games should use a real crypto rather than their (unsafe) virtual money, ie. actual Bitcoin or at least some altcoin.

...This is pretty much just sig spam right? Cause you're not fully understanding what is going on in fortnite and why it is being referenced in connection with the Metaverse.

It's being referenced in connecting with the MV because of the fact that they just had a concert in game with 12.3m people showing up to listen to the concert -- this was over a 2 day period, and I think that's very cool to see as we're just scraping the surface of the MetaVerse - https://techcrunch.com/2020/04/24/fortnite-hosted-a-psychedelic-travis-scott-concert-and-12-3m-people-watched/

Epic Games is going further and even planning encore events so the show is going to go on. Very cool.
1031  Other / Politics & Society / Re: It is time for a decentralized solution for local governments on: April 26, 2020, 10:13:37 PM
The problem with your logic is that a collapsing economy will not take power from the government, it will only bolster it. Look at history. Any time there is a disaster people run into the warm embrace of government promising to save them. These people see the populace starting to get wise to their games, their only hope to maintain control is to level the playing field, turn over all the tables, and hope to claw back more control in the chaos. Ordo Ab Chao.

+1 to this. People aren't rioting against the government right now, they're openly embracing more government control and in some cases even saying that the government isn't doing enough.

The US government has passed many stimulus packages already, and theirs already talks to bring more plans into existence. While I think it is the right thing to do because there are many Americans struggling -- what are we going to do with the debt that comes with this?

1032  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Coronavirus: International Updates on: April 26, 2020, 10:03:06 PM
I think it's important for people to look a bit beyond just looking at the headlines saying that the US has the most coronavirus cases. Because while that is true, it's not taking into account population differences that are present.

Ex: Obviously the US (360m or so people) has more Corona deaths then the Netherlands (17.28m)

But if you look into this a bit further, you're able to see the coronavirus deaths / infections per 1m people in the country. This is what we would call - adjusting for population differences.

When using this, you see that the US has 2976 cases and 167 deaths per 1m people. The Netherlands has 2209 cases (less) and 261 deaths (more deaths) per 1m. So yes, while the situation in the US -- especially in NY -- is dire, it's important to remember that raw numbers aren't always everything.
1033  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Heads we win Tails you loose - American Corporates. on: April 26, 2020, 09:05:35 PM
It's to be expected that during a time of crisis and large stimulus packages being passed -- the lobbyists and companies overall know that this is a perfect time for them to pull as much pork as they can from the multitude of laws passed so far. Certain industries have gotten money that many people expected to happen - Airline industry is an example of this, where they had $25B set aside (with some string attached)

Some companies have returned money that they've received from programs that weren't explicitly designed for them (even if it was legally allowed initially) - such as Paycheck Protection Loans going to some big companies that were structured as a bunch of smaller companies.

Regular people are getting money too through unemployment insurance, stimulus $, etc.

1034  Other / Politics & Society / Re: A Good Salary vs A Career in the sector you love... on: April 26, 2020, 04:58:07 PM
I know my initial answer is a bit of to the contrary of many others here, but I don't think a lot of people understand what I'm really saying is that you should find a good balance between something that you like and something that makes you money.

Maybe I really love playing the guitar, but I know that I'm bad at it and I know that I can't make a career out of it. The same could be said of many other things, like maybe Carpentry, or Auto work, etc. Some things you're just not good at and that's acceptable.

Find balance between something that can bring you the financial life that you want, and that you like enough to be able to do everyday without being miserable. Don't forget we all die in the end.

1036  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [SERIOUS] What do people think of direct cash payments (US stimulus package)? on: April 24, 2020, 03:41:43 PM
I was pretty surprised to see the cash payments  and unemployment only make up ~30% of the stimulus package combined.  (closer to 20-25% if you factor in they just added more money for small businesses)

Edit: I guess technically some of the business loans are kind of the same as unemployment since if a company doesn't fire any workers, they don't have to pay the loan back.

Yeah PPL are pretty much just unemployment as they're not firing people. I know they only have to use 75 percent of the loan (forgivable, so it's kinda just a grant) for payroll expenses, but it does make sense that that's the number they picked as they're giving employers 2.5x what each employee would've been getting paid prior to this.

PPL is honestly been one of the biggest portions of this, as Congress just authorized new money towards it yesterday. They actually just added new protections in the bill to ensure that only SMALL BUSINESSES are applying for it, and not just big businesses that separated their employees into entities that all have under 500 employees.
1037  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [SERIOUS] What do people think of direct cash payments (US stimulus package)? on: April 22, 2020, 12:38:51 PM
I don't live in USA but according to what I have read, this stimulus package is not enough for a single household, the reason that I think about the stimulus not being enough is that overtime the cost of living increased drastically for the past decade and there is also the inflation rate that increased the prices of products. I can't represent  what my country is doing and I am not saying they are doing a good job or not but I think that focusing more on relief operation would rather be helpful, in my city, including the financial help, the city welfare divisions are also giving away 4-day worth of food packs depending on how many family is living in the house.

Stimulus package isn't just this one time payment. I'll break it all down for you:

If you currently make under $150k as a couple living in the US, and you have two children you'd be entitled to $2400 ($1200 per person, and you're married) and then $500 per dependent child = $3400.

But that's not the only part of the stimulus package. If you were let go from your job, you're entitled to your normal unemployment benefits (which is going to depend on your state) plus an additional $600 per week from the federal government. I'd say on average people are getting $700-800 a week if they're unemployed right now per person. Those benefits last until July 30th.

I think there there should be more done to help everyday people, though I think a lot of that surrounds getting people to sign up for benefits that are already present. Making the sign up easier.
1038  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 2020 Democrats on: April 22, 2020, 08:27:23 AM
Around this time in 2016, Hillary Clinton led Trump in polls by over 10 points and Sanders led Trump 53 to 38: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cbs-poll-hillary-clinton-leads-donald-trump-but-voters-view-both-unfavorably/

Currently, Joe Biden is an average 5.5 points above Trump in national polling which, in my view, tells you a few things about this race.

One, an incumbent is hard to beat despite how chaotic Trump's Presidency has been so far. Joe Biden is far more popular than Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden has already received a Presidential endorsement by Obama (Hillary in 2016 did not receive an endorsement until months later) yet the lead Biden has is half of that compared to Clinton during the same time. To be fair and to give Biden a small ounce of credit, an incumbent should not be this low when polled against the front runner of the other party. In 2012 around this time, Obama led Mitt Romney by anywhere from 3-11 points in most polls. Trump is not in great shape but this isn't going to be a cake walk for Joe Biden. I know it's not entirely accurate to compare polling data across campaigns from different years because the landscape is entirely different, however, you can still draw parallels no matter the election year.

Two, Joe Biden truly is a boring candidate. Among a historically unpopular candidate like Trump, he isn't able to garner large amounts of support. I don't think democrats can pull off switching candidates at the DNC convention so Joe Biden is going to have to be it. The only way I see him gaining momentum is if he picks a good Vice Presidential candidate and my money would be on him picking Kamala Harris or Amy Klobuchar. These two are certainly leading in the betting odds and I'm interested in what you all would predict would be his pick. Either one of these two would give his campaign a bit of a lift but I'm not sure how Biden will fare against attacks regarding his cognitive decline. His VP pick can't help him with that.

Ronald Reagan had the greatest rebuttal against attacks regarding his cognitive decline during his reelection campaign - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJhCjMfRndk

Joe Biden just doesn't have the same charisma.

Warren would be a better pick than those two but the real game changer I’ve heard mentioned of late would be Michelle Obama. If he was able to get her on board and puts up a decent debate with just a few small gaffs here and there, could easily see it swing to the Dems.  Also, making fun of Biden’s brain farts and possible dementia without mentioning Trump not being able to pronounce words over two syllables very easily and consistently  slurring words just shows a pure bias that’s obviously beyond hypocritical and discrediting.

I think they both absolutely fn suck and we US citizens are insane for allowing this two party system to continue as is. A third independent party with equal opportunity is beyond overdue.

Oh yeah, I just think that Biden is a bit more senile then Trump. I know you didn't respond to me inittially, but wanted to point out what I think about everything on the matter.

Michelle Obama isn't going to be dark horse candidate this race -- Former President Obama already endorsed Biden and he is going to have the clear majority come whenever the DNC is having their convention. If he didn't have a clear majority, or a path to it, Bernie would still be in the race and then MAYBE a dark horse candidate could come through -- but that candidate would've been a Bloomberg type, not a Michelle Obama. At least IMO.

....Ronald Reagan had the greatest rebuttal against attacks regarding his cognitive decline during his reelection campaign - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJhCjMfRndk

Not exactly on topic, but that's only Reagans second best funny response to something (imo).

Here's the first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Krjmr7laKzY

Reagan had a number of good jokes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTIfGFJqLko

There's entire compilations about how funny Reagan was, guy had some amazing jokes and people knew it. His charisma was unmatched. Hats off to him and may he RIP.

Haven't seen or heard Joe Biden talk in days, guy has literally just been off the grid. To be honest, he's probably putting out daily press releases and videos but who the hell cares when we're in a time of crisis and he can't put out a coherent sentence without just forgetting most of what he's talking about. I know people attack Trump for not being the best public speaker, and honestly in a WH press briefing setting he really isn't too good. But Biden wouldn't be better and we all know that.

This is literally the worst case scenario for Biden. Typically right now everyone is uniting around their candidate, but no one cares because of this crisis and they're looking to the current administration to continue to help.
1040  Economy / Economics / Re: The drying oil on: April 22, 2020, 07:39:36 AM
Obviously one of the most reasons is about this pandemic has a huge role for the changes in the price of oil. During this global crisis where a limited number of transportations are allowed to be operational as well as production and other business are a force to shutdown temporarily then the demand on oil has been reduced. In order for oil companies to sell, they will do it at a lower price to encourage everyone to purchase their oil.

For now, let us enjoy the low price because after this pandemic the price might become back to the normal price. Good benefits to the consumers but it is really sad to the investors and businessmen that probably they will experience as of now a huge loss.

No, the pandemic is not the main reason. The main reason the disagreement between OPEC and non-OPEC countries.

The demand was really going down a bit and OPEC countries wanted to decrease production so that the prices wouldn't go down drastically.

I read that some countries don't know what to do with oil surplus so they're loading every single container they have and keep trains fully loaded ready for export. I believe the prices will go down even more.

It's a mixture of the two.

Russia and Saudia Arabia are currently in the midst of a oil price war at the moment. What this has lead to is the two countries continuing to pump out as much oil as possible to stick it to the other. Typically, in a time like this OPEC and other large drillers of oil would have limited the supply of oil to help themselves out to stabilize the price.

The Coronavirus situation isn't helping as some of the biggest users of oil -- Cruises, Airline Companies, etc -- are not using as much oil as usual as a large amount of flights are cancelled due to lack of demand and cruise have been stopped for awhile in the US as well (pretty sure the government is making them stop for like 120 days or so?)

People also don't really understand how the oil futures contracts work as well: I'll try to explain it as best as possible. The futures contracts that went negative (down to -38 per barrel at a point) if held to expiry would force you to have to purchase 1000 barrels of oil at $-37 a barrel. While that sounds perfect, the problem is that no one wants that oil and there's no cheap way to store crude oil. There's a major glut in the market, and you'd kinda just be sitting on product that you'd have to pay to go pickup.

1000 barrels of oil is 42,000 gallons of oil. You'd need like two extra long tractor trailers to go hold that product and then you'd have to store it and find someone to sell it to later. Contracts expired yesterday, April 21st. Which is why people were playing hot potato with it.
