1701  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASICs CHIPS! Using JohnK as Escrow! Send coins to confirm! on: April 25, 2013, 10:35:30 PM
Yeah, I'm definitely in it for the USA delivery too.

Also, I'm going to be trying to use one of the local plants here in Oregon to print and assemble the circuit bkkcoins is working on. PM me if you're interested in maybe pooling our chips and getting a group rate.

I'm definitely interested in this as I'll have 95 chips to find a PCB home for. Seems like this would be faster than shipping them to Germany and back which could take weeks.
1702  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitcoin's doom is not 51% attack, it's 99% attack on: April 25, 2013, 10:12:41 PM
The government invented NASA and the Mars mission. Producing its own ASICs would be a piece of cake for them.

And they're still using ship technology from the 1970s. Governments tend to move like leviathans... slowly and predictably. By the time they decide to use ASICs, that ship will have sailed and they will have spent millions on making the decision in the first place.
1703  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Democratic vote is held; Bitcoin limit is lifted to 900Million. How do you feel? on: April 25, 2013, 09:15:36 PM
So the idea is to create a fork where one of the fundamental design principles of Bitcoin is broken. Yeah that sounds like a winner to me.  Roll Eyes
1704  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Butterfly Labs on: April 25, 2013, 09:12:38 PM
Good luck with this. As a newcomer to the community, I am pretty unimpressed by BFL's practices, mainly their lack of truthful communication with the community and inability to deliver on promises and timelines made. There are indeed questions to be answered, and the threat of a class-action lawsuit would surely motivate them to be more forthcoming.
1705  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASICs CHIPS! Using JohnK as Escrow! Send coins to confirm! on: April 25, 2013, 05:52:57 AM
Looks like on the spreadsheet I am getting 99.9999 chips, and it says to round down. Should I send few more mBTC to clear that up ? 99 chips are hard to mount on board - even number is better - that's why I was trying to compute for 100 chips.
Nah, according to the OP 99.99999 is getting 100.

I hope 94.997 is close enough. I can send the .003 if needed  Cool edit: nevermind, new spreadsheet!

Also, thanks for making the process easy for everyone, John. I'm sure we all appreciate the time you're putting in here.
1706  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASICs CHIPS! Using JohnK as Escrow! Send coins to confirm! on: April 24, 2013, 09:29:39 PM
I'm in for for ~6 BTC, just trying to finish up some reading and calculations (just found this thread last night)...

apologies if this was answered recently, but say we order within a few days, what is the earliest we'd see shipment?
1707  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Building the next generation FAST CRYPTO CURRENCY MINING MACHINE on: April 24, 2013, 09:16:37 PM
I think you bring up some good points Viceroy, but to assume that ASIC mining will consolidate itself to the hands of a few is flawed logic IMO. This might happen if the market were not free (ie governments/corporations passing laws monopolizing the mining process) but the market is free for the forseeable future. Even if huge ASIC farms spring up, average Joe will still compete for his share of the pie as newer, smaller, and more efficient consumer ASIC solutions are marketed. Miniature ASIC mining devices and pools are going to be everywhere.

You also assume no new technology will ever trump ASIC, which is also flawed. Next year, ASIC will be the new GPU, and there will probably be faster tech on the horizon. Yes, difficulty will rise to meet ASIC hashing power, but it will not skyrocket beyond our collective reach until the next new tech emerges.

Your scenario might play out if the big players started lobbying to have laws passed on their behalf in order to monopolize the mining market. Don't give them any ideas Smiley
1708  Economy / Speculation / Re: I feel really dumb on: April 23, 2013, 03:10:28 PM
My rule of thumb is, if the price isn't where you want it to be, just wait a few days.
1709  Economy / Speculation / Re: Impressive - Merchant confidence returns! on: April 21, 2013, 08:21:57 PM
I'd say this is bullish as well. I fully expected another selloff to sub 100 range.

Very nicely done.

Great idea Smiley
1712  Economy / Speculation / Re: I think TA is voodoo but... on: April 19, 2013, 09:42:10 PM
I'm new to TA, but I find there needs to be at least 2 (or more) strong indicators to confirm a change. And some work better than others at different times.

I'm realizing that BTC is a very emotionally-driven market right now, and managing to control my own emotions while making predictions is difficult.
1713  Economy / Speculation / Re: Sold @ 135 on: April 19, 2013, 09:13:48 AM
So much for the three hour tour.
1714  Economy / Speculation / Re: Sold @ 135 on: April 19, 2013, 08:38:58 AM
I sold around 130 too, a bit too exciting for me.

1718  Economy / Speculation / Re: Lets say they try to make bitcoin illegal on: April 18, 2013, 08:30:59 PM
Quote
the old system banksters are noticing that there is a lot of money to make with/via/on/through bitcoins. that is what they live for, that is their reason to exist. so they will adopt it. use it. milk it. but they will not make it illegal. there is too much money in the game.

I think I agree with this. Everything is about money, sad but true. That said, there will be plenty of FUD media from the interests that stand to lose money. Ultimately the internet is beyond most governments' control, therefore bitcoin is.
1719  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same on: April 18, 2013, 04:38:38 AM
Adoption has been sluggish even though news of bitcoin has been mainstream for the past couple of years because most people don't trust it's chaotic value. Most merchants will not use a currency they have to constantly adjust the price to (also people in general aren't going to spend something that might double in value in a month). It is not widely used in commerce because bitcoin is not really a currency, but a commodity. People hold bitcoin just to make money. It has become mostly self-serving with only a few bitcoin related services scattered around the edge. There has not been much of an increase in adoption because it's just not really that useful.

Almost every sentence if FUD.

And he's attacking credibility of posters who disagree with him.

"Weren't you the guy who..." It's like a bad Family Guy episode.
1720  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Softcore Lounge on: April 17, 2013, 07:17:05 PM
Yes the argument could be made either way.

Personally I think we are headed down.
