All the bears, who didn't catch the train at 350 or less, are now building a narrative of a 'big risk' of the goverment shutting down Bitcoin, as if it was feasible. My guess is absolutely nothing will happen from government side as a result of the hearing. Politics and law-making takes time, and everyday the Bitcoin-infrastucture and knowledge is growing. No politicians will want to attempt shutting down Bitcoin as it would be widely covered (resulting in bad PR), and there really is no legimate reason for trying to do so. + they would likely fail.
So, there is no scenario where politicians claim Bitcoin is used for terror and it's 'game over'. What a ridiculous claim.
You're right, the Senate will not decide anything at the hearing. It's for publicity and education purposes. What's got people worried is Mike Hearn is pushing for coin blacklists. He's a lead developer, but probably not for long.

Oh silly Mike Hearn, what a terrible, terrible idea.
By even floating this in a serious way, you have instantly lost all respect from the community and singlehandedly damaged the Foundation's reputation, probably beyond repair.
Suffice it to say I will not be entertaining any future suggestions from Mr. Hearn, nor will I be supporting the Foundation in any way, shape or form.

Uh, not to be defending scumbag sellout Yifu, but can you cite a source for this information? Specifically the "caused" part. That's a pretty serious accusation. Just trying to keep my facts straight. He didn't directly cause it, but Chris expressed multiple times that he was becoming disillusioned with the K16 project specifically because of Yifu's actions. I didn't mean to imply he ordered a hit on him or anything.

Guys, I think it's amazing that this project is finally off the ground and working. I'm just sad I wasn't able to turn all these fancy parts in my office into miners...
I have a question. At what point do we give Bkkcoins a scammer tag? I hate to even suggest it as he gave a lot of his time to get the K16 95% finished before the chip debacle. I was with him the whole way and even sent him beer money so he could buy the equipment he needed. The fact stands that he still has 8 of my bitcoins, and everyday it's more and more obvious that he isn't returning. Other avenues of contact seem to have failed. How long do we give him?

someone sue yifu's ass already to keep his scammer ass preoccupied. he looks to smug in the photo
Considering how many people lost money in the ASIC chip scam due to his obviously illegal activities and business practices, it is rather surprising there has not been an organized effort to sue him. Even if you recieved your chips, they arrived so late that you lost all of their value. By delaying the chip orders so long, Yifu lost the trust of the Bitcoin community. He singlehandedly destroyed the community mining projects and caused Bkkcoins, developer of the K16, to disappear without a trace with the firmware unfinished. This left Steamboat and Terrahash, both who took on great risk and hundreds of thousands of forum members' dollars to assemble miners, screwed. Terrahash took the money and ran, Steamboat gave partial refunds. Bkkcoins still has 8 of my bitcoins. Yes, he refunded the chip orders. But he's done the Bitcoin community a huge disservice and we should actively work to boycott any business venture he chooses to be a part of. I lost a lot of money due to his incompetence, and should we ever meet in person, the result will be less than cordial.

theymos, do you have any idea where John is, or when he might return?
I suppose that he's busy with school. But I haven't talked to him. Well, if you have any way of contacting him outside the forum, it would be helpful for him to know that there are a number of people with outstanding escrow to be released. I'm going to email him tonight.

2-of-3 multisig escrow is also possible in Bitcoin-Qt now, though it's a little complicated. I recommend multisig for large escrows.

Economy / Speculation / Re: It's getting frothy, and I'm dumping 75% of my coins
|
on: November 13, 2013, 05:32:28 AM
|
yeah I sold approx 300 coins between 320 and 380
I have 100 coins left
I will dump all at $1000 if that happens within a few weeks
you guys do all realize that only around 5% of us can take profit on bitcoin? any more than that and the price will literally go to $10 or so
on the day silk road got shutdown, there was heavy selling volume on the exchanges, approx 200 000 coins ( or 2%). not all of those were sells, so lets say 160 000 sells.
that was enough to drop BTC price almost 50% on some exchanges
now..... imagine 5% of people or 600 000 coins are sold within 48 hours.
it would literally devastate bitcoin prices.
So....... although I like bitcoin, when you get down to it, every person who is hoarding bitcoins (myself included) is pretty much counting on the fact that they will somehow be the first to sell when the time comes. But obviously this is impossible, 95% of us have to be wrong.
I personally think this is a myopic view, but feel free to sell your coins to stronger hands.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: scenarios if US Govt tried to take down bitcoin?
|
on: November 12, 2013, 08:37:12 PM

Remember that the us government (or any large government for that matter) is made up of individuals acting in their own interests, often within huge beauracracies, which then operate in their own best interests and often compete with each other for power, money, etc. 99% of these people have probably never heard of Bitcoin and don't care about much beyond a nice paycheck and getting home to watch Homeland. Even Federal Reserve employees are like this, yes I know a few.
I say this because I keep reading about "they". "They" will outlaw Bitcoin. Who is they? There is no smoke filled room with old men deciding the fate of Bitcoin. The system is huge, complex, and has grown ever dependent on itself. It is a house of cards, a lumbering dinosaur, and not nearly as nefarious as some of you think.
One thing for sure is that without the dollar they are powerless: a silent coup. That is the beauty of Bitcoin.
The discussion keeps drifting from my original technical question, but OK I should have posted on the tech board - and for most people understanding if an attack would come is more important. Yes, the govt is a collective consciousness - I didn't want to get into this since it is part of the side issue of if or when "they" attack. The reason bitcoin wasn't taken down immediately, imo, is precisely because a collective consciousness is slow to act and bitcoin was hard to attack. Eventually the collective consciousness of the Establishment will recognize the threat and act more forcefully. Yes that may be years in the future but this is a different debate vs the originally technical question of how an attack would occur, could blame be shifted, and if there would be warning. I guess the point I was trying to make is that if enough individuals within the government stand to profit from Bitcoin and it's in their interest to jump the fiat ship, any attack will likely never happen. All you mathemagician coders tend to look at things too black and white

Everyone please, stop the madness !
I don't wanna see any more posts (probably americans) with people saying saying China wants to see the USD go down.
This is outright wrong, you need to stop reading this Wall observer and go read the newspapers first.
China is the absolute #1 investor in USD. Get your facts straight.
Well, since you apparently have your facts straight, please point me to a source that verifies you claim that "China is the absolute #1 investor in USD". They do own many billions worth of our bonds.

I was in rehearsal tonight and could think of nothing but Bitcoin. The conductor's arms were waving wildly in front of me and I was simply going through the motions, looking right through him at a different future.
The markets are primed for ignition, so exciting.
I was wondering when watching a conductor wave his wand. Why do you need him? Surely you can play without a man and a wand? He artistically interprets the piece by controlling tempo, volume, and a hundred other small factors and gives entrance and cutoff cues. His conducting pattern changes with the time signature indicated in the music. Listen to the same Beethoven or Mozart symphony of multipe famous conductors and there's a big difference.

Hi all!
It has come to my attention that a few of you are having problems with inserting the ad along with the BB code.
If you press the "quote" button, it will provide you with the BB code. Then copy and paste the ad along with the BB code that you see after pressing the "quote" button. Thank you.
Cheers,
HashFast Team
Thanks for the tip, I was wondering about that last night.

It's pure manipulation. Read the forum history, there's a lot to read but you can pinpoint certain people on this forum who pop up just before ATH's and pump the price to the max then dump relentlessly. Then patiently wait to do it again.
So what happens when it stops working? Oops! Only takes one time to be left on the wrong side of a trade. Risky.
