1621  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike - 16 chip ASIC Open Source Board - Preliminary on: May 23, 2013, 07:21:00 PM

I'm good for the rest.

Awesome. I'm sending over .2 BTC just in case he needs beer (or chips, ha) for the weekend. Thanks again for the hard work you're putting in, Bkk.
1622  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike - 16 chip ASIC Open Source Board - Preliminary on: May 23, 2013, 05:53:53 PM
For those that want to make their own with a kit, I'm still quite keen to offer that and it would have a programmed PIC in the kit. So there's no extra hassle with any lock in or anything. You'd just order a kit and get the parts/board/instructions ready to build. That's a much more limited and expert segment of users.

This is what I'm interested in--as long as you are reasonably confident you could source the required components in time. I wouldn't mind the option of ordering a spare set of parts (or three) as well, to allow room for error.

Now about getting you that oscilloscope. I'd be happy to chip in, who's with me?
1623  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Where is Ragingazn628? on: May 23, 2013, 04:58:33 PM
Again: did you use escrow?

no offense, but isn't this only relevant if the chips haven't been ordered?  If they've been ordered I assume John K has already had to forward the btc to Avalon, hence limited protection here.

True. Hope at least you requested for his ID, etc. to be reviewed by mods. You simply do not give such amount of money to a random guy on the interwebz without having his info checked.

It was my understanding that John K has all of ragingazn's verified personal info.
1624  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is being killed by governments and nobody seems to care! on: May 23, 2013, 02:18:33 AM
That makes no sense. At all.

Ignoring the fact that you apparently think taxes are stealing (even though you are provided with education, fire dept, police and military protection, roads, social safety net, etc, etc with those taxes)

The act is still theft, what is done with the loot afterwards does not change the act.

No, because the citizens of this country elect officials who support taxation to represent them, and in some local/state governments vote on taxes directly.

The power is always in the peoples hands.

We didn't get to vote on the creation of the Federal Reserve, the same year income tax was imprelented. And you can't seriously say with a straight face the our government properly represents us.
1625  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is being killed by governments and nobody seems to care! on: May 22, 2013, 09:11:39 PM
Governments are shooting themselves in the foot when they clamp down on bitcoin exchanges.

They will only succeed in exacerbating the problem they attempt to eradicate.

Bitcoin was brought about by world banks acting irresponsibly. If they had not bailed out everybody and their cousin to the tune of billions upon billions of fiat taxpayer money, it's likely something like Bitcoin would not appear for years.

Good job, you greedy bastards.
1626  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BFL on: May 22, 2013, 06:55:17 PM
Very scammy behavior IMO. The CEO has a colorful past as a con artist and served jail time for it. Take your money elsewhere.
1627  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Holy Grail! I wish I could kiss the author of Bitmessage on his face. on: May 21, 2013, 11:54:31 PM
This really looks like a promising idea. Will be following closely.
1628  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Foundation is TOXIC and must dissolve, plus a call to action on: May 21, 2013, 10:48:03 PM

Now look at someone like Ron Paul, who has worked within this corrupt system for his entire career.

Ron Paul joined the mafia in hope he could change the mafia into something good. He couldn't have succeeded. Of course one does not change / destroy mafia by joining it (except for success stories in movies).

I think Gavin and other TBF members are smarter than Ron Paul and have greater chances of succeeding. But still I estimate their chances at 0.00000000%, which is not worth the effort.

Ron Paul (per his own words) went into politics to spread ideas, not to win. And while Gavin and others may be smarter than Ron Paul, the real question is, are they more principled? I would guess not.
1629  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Foundation is TOXIC and must dissolve, plus a call to action on: May 21, 2013, 09:47:29 PM
Couple years ago it was "Don't talk to the CIA! They're Evil, and will Destroy Bitcoin!"

Now it is "Don't get involved in DC lobbying! That's Evil, and will Destroy Bitcoin!"

In a few more years, I bet it'll be "Don't go to the United Nations! They're Evil, and will Destroy Bitcoin!"

I'll quote myself from a related thread on google+

Quote

Walking along the beach this afternoon, enjoying the California sunshine, I think I realized where the fundamental disagreement lies.

Financial privacy / freedom is a larger issue than Bitcoin, and I personally think it would be better to fight that fight separately from Bitcoin.  Yes, Bitcoin is a great tool that will (I hope) bring us greater privacy/freedom. But I see advocating for Bitcoin as separate from advocating for financial privacy/freedom in general.

So: I think if you want financial privacy/freedom in general, then there is at least one US organization dedicated to that goal (http://freedomandprosperity.org/ -- we should get them to accept Bitcoin donations). I hate reinventing wheels, and am a big believer in focused organizations and projects as the way to get things done, so I think the Bitcoin Foundation should concentrate on making Bitcoin successful.

Gavin, you do realize that you're in a unique position here, where your decisions now within the Foundation will greatly affect Bitcoin's future.

While I agree with you about Bitcoin not being the sole catalyst for financial freedom, you must understand that by lobbying and engaging DC politicians, you are working within the very same corrupt system that Satoshi was fed up with.

Now look at someone like Ron Paul, who has worked within this corrupt system for his entire career. Numerous versions of his bill to audit the Federal Reserve (like, a full-on audit) were struck down time and again by banking interests. His attempts at the Presidency were easily kneecapped by a corrupt GOP and corporate-owned media. Do you really think something so disruptive like Bitcoin, that not only competes with the Federal Reserve, but threatens entire banking industries around the world, with all their money and power, are going to lay back and accept Bitcoin just because some politically-naive programmers hired a few good lawyers?

It's like handing your enemy a time bomb, saying, "Here's what will eventually destroy you, however I'm going to show you all of its secrets so you don't attack me first."

I am, as are others, fearful that you are jumping into a snake pit here, and one misstep could doom Bitcoin to the shadows of the internet. And I'm sure the moneyed interests in Washington would be just fine with that.
1630  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL Forced "On Hold For Refund" for all my Single SC orders on: May 21, 2013, 05:50:56 PM
I continued to be surprised how strong sales are for BFL even to this day. Guess it goes to show you how much of an impact advertising can have, and how this sizzle is often more important than the steak.

I can also understand somewhat how folks who haven't read too much about Bitcoin, or much at all on these forums, could be seduced into buying a sexy BFL 'pre-order' after punching in basic numbers into that top Google ranked Bitcoin mining calculator, which has the big prominent BFL ad on the same page.

What I don't understand is how so many people could be so screwed by this company, and yet, how very few seem to request refunds.  Even let's suppose BFL ships in 2 months or so. How can you justify being lied to repeatedly and still trust this company -- there is no way in hell they could have expected to finish their product in any of the initial timelines they regularly proclaimed.

And if you even then presumed that they were being honest when saying '1 or 2 more weeks' for the last forever, (and going great lengths to win that 'shipping' bet) then you would than logically have to suppose that the level of BFL's incompetence is such that it'd be a far better investment to move your BTC anywhere elsewhere.

Get a refund while you can. Cut your losses.

Spend a few days on the BFL forums and you'll see why. Not the brightest group over there. The moderators are bullies (probably by design, as some have been given product) and many of their customers do not speak English very well (or at all). Most are just honest folks who keep holding out hope for their magic money machine. More of them are waking up, and are loudly being told to get refunds so BFL can distance themselves from undesireable customers.

Their ads and slick website continue to draw in the naive and greedy, piggybacking off bitcoin's success, promising huge returns on investment. Funny how scams, having evolved over the years, still operate by exploiting a plethoria of basic human emotions.
1631  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL Forced "On Hold For Refund" for all my Single SC orders on: May 21, 2013, 12:53:20 AM
For starters, the charges you're referencing appear to have been little more than an IRS witch hunt. Maybe he voted Republican?  Roll Eyes

Yeah the IRS will be after you too, when they see that you're on BFL's payroll.
1632  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Department of Homeland Security Shuts Down Dwolla Payments to and From Mt. Gox on: May 20, 2013, 07:36:32 PM
I don't think there will be a war.  Believe me - a war is the last thing we want, anyway.

We want careful, competent, coherent regulation.

What I fear is this could deliver bitcoin into the hands of politicians, opening the door wide open to incompetent regulation, or regulation meant to weaken bitcoin.

Special interests in Washington could easily kneecap bitcoin into being so difficult to use, that it remains fringe. Therefore it would be little threat to the dollar or euro.

1634  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: I'm starting to get fucking pissed (BFL) on: May 18, 2013, 05:59:04 PM
Hardware is hard, remember this is custom hardware, it isn't like plans sit on the self and you can just modify those.

It is only hard if you have never done it before. Otherwise it is just like building and shipping any other physical product.

It's hard if your only business experience is running an international mail order scam for six years.

1636  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Klondike heatsink sourcing on: May 17, 2013, 06:43:15 PM
Any heatsink would work potentially, however having the holes pre drilled is a huge timesaver.

If Bkk gives the go-ahead that these will dissipate the heat well enough, given multiple boards stacked together and a fan blowing at them, I'm in for at least 50.
1637  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Butterflylabs Huge SCAM on: May 16, 2013, 09:04:56 PM
Please understand that I have kept up with the facts and made my decision to pre-order after I waited a good amount of time to collect the data I needed to feel comfortable enough with the risks.

If you really kept up with the facts and did your due diligence, you would find out that the President of Butterfly Labs, Sonny Vleisides, is a felon. He was convicted of running a mail fraud racket that, over six years, stole $20 million from the elderly and naive. These scams went by names like Shamrock Agency, German Swiss Group and World Expert Fund. His business partner at the time, Dennis Emmet, is now in jail for MURDER. He shot a guy IN THE FACE after getting into an argument.

These are facts, not libel. Google his name and read the affidavit. Even if they are legitimately creating a product, look at his past business practices, who he associates himself with, and ask yourself seriously if they are worthy of your hard-earned money. This company has not delivered for a year and is run by a former con artist. Any newbies thinking about pre-ordering need to take this into consideration.

1638  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BFL Forced "On Hold For Refund" for all my Single SC orders on: May 16, 2013, 07:18:45 PM
This all stinks of a company....

The whole company stinks to high heaven. Sonny Vleisides, a smart, slippery con artist who ran a mail order scam for six years, stealing $20 million from the elderly and naive with no sense of remorse, stinks. The people he surrounds himself with stink: Dennis Emmet, his associate in the mail order scam, killed a guy in an argument. He's in a Costa Rican prison for murder. It's all in the affidavit, go read it.

Imagine what goes through a guy like Sonny's head when he sees an opportunity like bitcoin. Now he's running Butterfly Labs. Perhaps it's a natural evolution of The Shamrock Agency and Old Amsterdam, his two other scam companies.

Even if it is somehow legitimate, imagine what is happening behind closed doors with these people. Get your money out while you still can.
1639  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: May 15, 2013, 05:17:28 AM
I'm really surprised this doesn't get mentioned more often, but, there are a lot of people out there now, wealthy people, early adopters and new players alike, that have vested interest and a genuine belief in this technology.  The market is thin enough that these people can help ensure the price and volatility does not reach a level that could cause a level of panic which would create harm to its now escalating adoption.

The U.S. government is attacking this thing with flailing arms, and while it can scratch and do some superficial damage, the mark will be missed.  This time, it really is up to the people.

Agreed. They are a few years too late in any endeavor to seriously attack bitcoin and not come off as tyrannical. The average Joe doesn't know what kind of power the banking cartel/monopoly has, and they certainly don't want him to wake up. They will tread carefully.

On a happier note, I transferred funds to Gox via Dwolla this morning. Hours later I get the DHS email. Regardless, they funded my account for the full amount just a little while ago. I doubt they want to lose customers over this.
1640  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MtGox account in the USA has been seized by the DHS? on: May 15, 2013, 04:57:04 AM
I have a feeling that you can probably kiss that money good-bye ... goes for anybody with anything in Dwolla Mutum Sigilium account transiting to/from Mt. Gox.

Seizure warrants are to seize the alleged proceeds of crime before the "criminals" can have a chance to state their case in court. A sealed warrant and etc means they are going to go full "anti-terrorist" mode and do everything behind closed doors, secret courts, etc .... basically the money is gone, locked up in secret legal battles to infinity, which suits the Feds just fine.

Did you think all the Libertarians were idiotic tinfoil-hatters crying wolf about the big bad out of control govt.? Just watch.

Just to follow up on this, as I was worried about the same thing. My story begins when I transferred funds to Mt Gox's Dwolla account this morning (bad timing is an understatement).

Two hours later I get the email from Dwolla about DHS. I'm thinking, "Oh shit, there goes my money, down the money hole, to fund a massive, bloated bureaucracy no less."

A bit shaken up, I send a worried email to Gox. They respond within hours saying, "Yes, we realize what happened, we don't know anything yet, your patience is appreciated, blah blah." Now I'm making plans on how to break this to my wife, thinking I'm going to be living outside for awhile.

Then the incredible happened. Just a few hours ago, I get an email saying my account has been funded for the full amount. Thank God. I buy some cheap coins and get them the hell out of there.

I figure one of two things happened: I got lucky and the funds were transferred out in time, or Mt Gox is willing to take this one on the chin to keep existing customers. Thankfully my experience ended happily. I hope others have a similar experience.
