Who is saying that the sextant doesn't measure the sun? It can even measure other stars that are much farther away. But because of its limitations, the sextant can't tell how far they are away, or how far the sun is away. This doesn't mean that the sextant doesn't measure the sun.

But it DOES mean that you don't measure straight up at 90 degrees. Rather, you measure straight up at zero degrees. When measuring an overhead sun, 90 degrees shows you a position slightly above the horizon.

Your calc that tells us how you think a sextant measure the sun is incomplete and incorrect. All the sextant tells us is the angle. If the sun were 93 million light years away, and were the corresponding diameter (a light year to a mile), it would appear almost the same as it does.

Guys, how I adore you.  Already 15563 comments in this thread.  I have not visited this topic for almost 2 years and thought that the disputes regarding this issue have already been resolved, but I see that the conflict regarding the shape of our planet or the plane of the Earth does grow more and more.  I heard that recently China announced new programs about building a new settlement on the moon.  I think this news is like a nuclear bomb.  By the way, North Koreans seriously think that their cores are born in space.

The reason is that it is difficult to tell someone he is wrong about his religion. So far notbatman comes close at times to seeing how far off he is. Then, in a spirit of faith, he turns back to what he wants to believe... more like a cult than a religion.

1. Measure the Sun with a sextant (use a marine sextant as it has the welding glass for looking at the Sun) at sunrise or sunset when the Sun is 50% visible i.e. 0 degrees elevation. The result will be 16 minutes. This is the Sun's refracted size and it can very slightly based on weather conditions. I believe this type of refractive magnification is also called looming.

2. Calculate the Sun's un-refracted size at 0 degrees elevation based on the angular size limitation of the human eye (1 minute). The result is unsurprisingly, 1 minute as there is in fact no calculation involved.

3. Calculate the distance to he horizon through the atmospheric plane with a 1 foot eye elevation. The result is unsurprisingly, 1 nautical mile. The angular limit of the eye being 1 minute equates to being able to see a 1 foot object at a maximum distance of 1/2 nautical miles.

4. Measure the Sun at 90 degrees elevation with no refraction. The result is 32 minutes.

5. Use a right angle trigonometry calculator and enter the Sun's radius in nautical miles (16) and an angle from one side (59.73333). The result is a distance of 3440 nautical miles. We know the Sun's radius in nautical miles because we proved 1 minute equals 1 nautical mile with the calculation in step #3.

That's it, proof beyond a reasonable doubt the Sun is a close small object.

Since you won't accept the multitudes of scientific proofs that the earth is a globe, you either have a religion going for yourself, or you are a troll, or you are in (or should be in) the funny farm.

You can show all kinds of things, but you won't. So, until you do, you don't have anything worthwhile.

You can go out to almost any piece of land, but especially to a flat piece of land, or to a calm ocean in a boat away from land, and see a dome of a sky. Why? Because that's the way our eyes interpret what we see. Not because a dome is really what is there.
