BREAKING: ROGER FEDERER TO RETIRE AT LAVER CUPhttps://www.tennis.com/There we go, thats an end to the speculation about his tennis career. The Laver cup is a nice way to bow out I suppose and at least he gets a chance to retire while playing so to speak. ^^ It might be because Father time is really on the heel of Nadal, he is older that Djokovic so most likely he will retire much earlier than Djokovic and I have a feeling that his game might be deteriorate and then only Djokovic will have to content with the onslaught of new players. Alcaraz for one has proven himself already but still wanted him to see against a healthy Djokovic in any tournament specially a finals because for sure we will see if he can match Djokovic mentality in that game, gonna be fun to watch.
We have seen now the first of the Big 3 retiring, Nadal would probably be next, possibly if he is no longer in contention for either the Australian or French opens. Tennis lost a great champion today and it will never be the same again It was sort of expected he was dragging that knee injury and he isn't getting any younger. I guess there will be a lot more spectators at Laver Cup just to see him play one last time. I know I will be watching, granted only on TV.

It is soo hard to digest that we wont see Federer at Wimbledon, one last time. I was hoping he'd come back to 23 season for one last time and play a couple of slams. Sad to see him retire. Will surely watch the Laver Cup, just for him.

It seems unlikely that Federer will make a comeback in the tennis world. I think he sometimes hits a ball in his backyard, but then on a friendly basis or with a trainer. He has been out of circulation for a while now, if you wouldn't move or play tennis at all, the body can no longer handle that either. After all, Roger isn't 25 anymore. He has won everything you can imagine in tennis, his legacy will live on forever. I don't think there is a greater tennis player that has ever existed. Even if it may not be the player with the most titles.

It is really sad to see him go, but he should have done it a few years ago. We have already forgotten what kind of a player he was because the last 5+ years he was forcing it although he was physically unable to cope.
If we boil it down to numbers alone, we can always discuss that Nadal or Đoković are better than Roger. But for me the 'eye test' is the most important factor when deciding who is the best player and there can be only one player on top.
Federer is the essence of how tennis should be played. One of the most impressive athletes of all time.

I think for the generation that really saw Roger won the Canadian Open in early 2000's and become one of the big 3 and the GOAT, it really sadden to see him retire like this. However, it's obvious as you have said that he has lost his prime already in the last 3 years and although he has competed and won tournaments, it is not the same Federer because of the wear and tear on his body. He had accomplished a lot and for me he is just a shade above Nadal and Djkovic, so personally he is my top 1 regardless of the numbers.

It is too bad that Federer is retiring but he is already 41 years old and had too much injuries the last couple of years. In my eyes, he is the greatest of all time and it doesn't matter to me that Nadal and Djokovic won more grandslams. Federer is one the the most naturally gifted players of all time and he was always a pleasure to watch!

Many are hoping for him to come back or at least say goodbye in a big tournament but sadly it didn't go the way what expected but at least in this tournament i.e. the Laver Cup the fans could see him as a farewell, he will be remembered as a legend with his fantastic records and that inspires many young tennis players

I think it's time he hung his bats. Going on tours and playing a total of 1500 games will certainly take a toll on a 41 year old. The world of tennis would miss the Swiss legend but I think it's best he's retiring since he hasn't been able to recover from the knee injury he sustained some time back.. . The lavee cup which is set to be played next week in London should see him saying his goodbyes and according to Rafa, "that day would be a sad day".

The Laver cup is a nice way to bow out I suppose and at least he gets a chance to retire while playing so to speak. Been watching this guy compete for tennis at the top for a lot of years now. He was the one who inspired me to pick up tennis in high school until life happened. I think there's not much left for him to prove anyways at the sport. He's been the number 1 consistently for hundreds of weeks, and it's already a great achievement that a lot can only dream of and a few can achieve. He's getting old as well, you can see him slow down at times. Age is catching up to him, and I guess he wants to be remembered as the one of the greats before he retires and not drag his career just for the money.

I've enjoyed watching you play over the years. What a classy and talented person. Serena Williams was the first, and now Roger Federer is the second retire in the same year. Probably it will have an effect on them, specially that Nadal was the closest contemporary and they have many great battles along the way and become friends outside of the court. And only it is Djokovic that will have to carry the torch reset the grand slam record and become the best of this era.

Whenever we discuss tennis in the modern era, we have to mention Roger Federer as one of the most prominent figures. In my opinion, he is without a doubt one of the best players of this era. In my opinion, this is a good decision that he has made because from now on I do not think he will be performing very well for a longer period of time. I also think that his career was one of the best in the world. There is no doubt that if he looks back on his career after retirement, he won't regret a single thing he did in his career. The fact that the legends of this game are retiring one by one, whilst we know that this is going to happen at some point, is still sad to see.

Nevertheless, when we hear someone who have played the game to almost perfection and given us so many great games, it's always going to hurt us tennis fans. And then sooner we might hear another of the big 3 retiring, but we have to accept it.

Roger: On one hand it is sad to hear such news. But on the other hand, one must also say: respect. It is better to end your professional career with a clear and uplifted head. He is 41 and Alcaraz is only 19. This is a new generation that is growing. And he seems to have realised it. So does Serena. She is 40. Let us see who else finishes its career this year. Thank you for all these years.

BREAKING: ROGER FEDERER TO RETIRE AT LAVER CUP
Well i guess it was getting more and more likely that this will happen in the last few months as it seemed that Roger Federer just could not seem to get fit and healthy anymore in the last year or so and there were always new issues coming up. The last news i heard from a few weeks ago was that they have found water in his knee. This could have been the last straw that made him announce his retirement. That is very sad news for the whole world of tennis as he was the best of all time for many fans and experts, even though Nadal has better stats than him. I also prefer Federer over Nadal because Roger just was so elegant on the court with his one handed backhand and his amazing touch.

Federer is old by sporting standard(41years), even without any health and fitness challenges, it is a ripe age for any successful sportsman or woman to retire from competitive sport. He has nothing else to prove and I as well as many others wish him well in any path he decides to take. That is very sad news for the whole world of tennis as he was the best of all time for many fans and experts...
I love Federer, and I am happy to have witnessed the best of a legend like him.

I love Federer, and I am happy to have witnessed the best of a legend like him. What I like about his decision is that he did it without participating in Wimbledon or another big tournament. The reason is that this is really his character. He doesn't want to take away the stage from others for no reason. What if he participates in Wimbledon once more, gets beaten in the 3rd round and the whole tournament is about his goodbye instead of the players who actually should get the attention for their achievements during that tournament? That is why I think it is a brilliant decision to say goodbye at the Laver Cup. Roger Federer is one of the hosts, there are no points for the ATP list and it is the perfect setup to allow for fans to celebrate his goodbye with him. Even if Roger loses early during the cup, it doesn't matter that much. Chapeau for that decision and to not just keep going and going to then use Wimbledon as final stage.

Thats an interesting thought but IDK, if he was fit I think he would play, thats the competitive angle top guys work on but I think he is more of a realist, he isnt going to win any notable tournaments anymore, he has done very well for himself and its time to retire at a tournament where he will be part of a team, potentially play a match and gets to share with players he has competed against for so long. Compared to lets say Andy, whom I have great respect for. Andy keeps playing, I think he knows he wont win any more GS' he plays purely for the sport and to test his competitiveness. And then Serena, different again, she was not a realist, she thought she could win another GS.
