Sinner really started the AO fantastically - Edmund is a decent player and he managed to get only 6 games.
Based on the result alone, Nadal looked comfortable as well.
The biggest disappointment so far is (again) Borna Čorić, losing in straight sets against Jiri Lehečka.
Kyrgios withdrew from the tournament due to injury - which is a shame. I had him as one of the favorites.

Nadal looked very comfortable indeed, but yeah, I think I remember reading Trofo saying about Nick's chances and I don't think we're alone in thinking he could go far, but knee injury means he's out. Big shame really, crowd favourite and he brings a lot to the entertainment factor.
Two epics going on now. Fucsovics looks like he'll make it but Wawrinka seems set to be another bad AO outing.

It has to be said that Wawrinka played very well in this match. However, there was also a lot of skillful play from his opponent Alex Molcan and I cannot say that this is a match in which there was a deserving winner. However, I think that after a match like this, we are all going to agree that whoever won, is the deserving winner of such an event. As far as Wawrinka is concerned, he has actually been a little unlucky.

@crunck there were two key incidents in Nadal match which needs to be highlighted here first one was where Nadal shouted to the umpire that that ball boy had taken his racket away, and that could have probably effected his rhythm but despite that incident he yet managed to win.

Further the second incident was the use of floodlights which wasn’t needed for this match, and this issue effected both the player’s but it was sorted out quickly and lastly I’m praying that Nadal remains fit because I would love to see him win few more trophies before he retires.

Actually woke up a bit early to see what I could catch and already see the heat in AO (I'm reading 30 degrees and wondering, wait, that's not that hot haha but I don't know Aussie heat!) has some havoc. Thiem bit the dust, while in women's local girl wildcard has knocked out Kanepi.

Murray and Berrettini were just fighting it out for breaker on 4th set now, was hoping the Brit would take this but this is now going all the way.

Watched the first three sets and came to the conclusion that the 4th set would be a win for Andy Murray. Later saw the fourth set won by Berrettini 7⁹ - 6⁷ on a great fight and the last set won by Andy Murray 7¹⁰ - 6⁶ after a great fight to win the match. During the earlier sets itself we were able to experience the aggression between the two. The real heat of the tournament is being felt in the first round itself.

I hope this means that Murray can finally play without pain. Berrettini is a good player, you cannot win a 5-setter against him if you're physically struggling.

Đoković is scheduled to play - which is good news. He missed the last 2 trainings and there were some concerns that he might withdraw from the tournament.

Alexander Zverev has just celebrated his comeback in the so-called Happy Slam against Juan Pablo Varillas from Peru. But it was not an easy match for him. He had to play the whole 5 sets. He won sets 2, 3 and 5. But for him it was the first big test since the French Open and he himself said that he does not have high hopes. He is just happy to be able to play again.

Yeah, why not though? maybe sport bookies saw that Diego is very inconsistent with this huge event that sometimes he exited early. But against a unknown player, perhaps Diego can still pull it through.

He is 2.38 underdog at Stake, (seems to be the ML odds are not yet listed on Sportsbet though). So that is a good bet in my opinion and best of luck.

It does feel like something's off. I wasn't aware of the injury but I'll watch the highlights of his match today. Wolf is a hard courter while Diego is a mix, great at clay but generally good on hard too but his strength is mobility. If he's actually injured, he will have a hard time, especially if the match goes into 5 sets.

this really seems to be true for Novak
I don't think there is a remote chance for anyone to even make it interesting against him, and winning is hardly possible

looking at Zverev, Rublev today final is almost guaranteed from this part of the draw, and only Medvedev played great tennis in first round, but I don't see him going far

It is not so much pain these days, it is physical limitations due to artificial hip. Medicine simply hasn't progress enough to make perfect transplant and Murray said it himself there are some sorts of movements he is just not able to do anymore. That made him reinvent some strokes which is never easy. It is also a big blow on mental state when things aren't going his way, very easy to become negative in situations like that.

Anyway, I just watched 5th set and had a feeling Murray will take it if Berettini serve just drops a little, which happened beginning of match tie break and was enough for Murray to take advantage.

I feel like a lot of people have not even heard the name, Diego Schwartzman. And are you always thinking it is a good idea for everyone to hold on to their money in matches like this? Because in my opinion, Diego Schwartzman versus JJ can go either way. But I will still say that in my personal opinion, Diego Schwartzman does feel like he will be able to play better against JJ.

I also agree that there is a big chance for Novak Djokovic to actually win the trophy. But at the same time, it is not like he does not have any competition as well.

Regarding Novak, who can you seriously see beating him? Zverev always gives him trouble but hasn't been the same since fracturing his leg at Rolland Garros last year. Alcaraz pulled out with injury, Nadal and Medvedev aren't in good form.

The only threat I see is Tsitsipas.

Yea myself and buwaytress have already been through that idea about betting on Djokovic.
Better off the bet match by match and pounce on the odds offered if he goes a set or two
down early on.

That's the whole point... you don't even get your stake back as winnings IF he wins the final. Why not go for him now at handicap or live bet after going a set or two down. Martingale that way if you want, you'll end up with more money if you do that every round till the final.

One slip and you lose everything, just not worth it (to me).

Some interesting results today, Djokovic breezed through his 3 sets, Murray got the job
done against Berrettini, Ruud had a tough one against Machac? and dropped a set,
Rune was efficient with his 3 setter and Zverev took 5 sets to win.

I watched this one and it was actually a very good performance by Machac. If he was playing any player outside top 10 he would have won probably. Ruud is actually one of my favorites now for AO. Never liked him much but you gotta give him consistency, he very rarely disappoints and doesn't give much via unforced errors. This year that could be enough to come far in the draw. Did not check later stages so I don't know when he gets Djoković but nobody else will be a big favorite to win against Ruud.

Nadal has an injury that needs treatment, Nadal's injury looks serious and it will be a disappointment for his fans if he really has to retire due to injury, sometimes medical timeouts make the flow of the game change.

Yes he is consistent and can remain mentally focussed and level headed, some people
would probably say boring. I would agree now himself and Medvedev are the ones posing
a threat to Djokovic.

I was speaking about betting against Nadal the whole time, got home late and was really tired and failed to check the odds.
Of course, the first thing I see after waking up is him losing in straight sets against McDonald.

Sinner continues with impressive performances - Etcheverry is not a great player but he's tall and a decent server - and yet he managed to win less than 60% of games on his serve.
He's got all the stars aligned for his first GS title.

Not actually a surprise, I was talking against Nadal even before AO started. Granted even more in some other topics related to Sportsbet specials. This was most likely scenario from the start of the tournament. Not sure exactly when injury happened but it was much sooner than 3rd set, he was already injured in second set for sure, had big problems with movements and tried to shorten the points as much as possible.
