Theoretically the way I look at it is that Nadal and Djokovic have pretty much developed their
game to the max whereas the younger generation and in particular Alcaraz are still developing.

Could be, we are already in 2022 era, so most likely this old guard will have to retire because they have max their potential already. To the point that when they tried, their body is no longer responding to them, the way we see on Federer and then it starts to deteriorate, wear and tear on this body caught up with the. But the good news is that we have a new set of players going to take over from them.

I would like to think that Alcaraz in 2023 will be much better than 2022 and should pose more
of a threat to everyone including Djokovic.

I agree, by leaps and bounds, sure in 2022 he had a break out run, but Alcaraz would dominate next year just like Djokovic did when he was younger. So it's good to see the old and the young generations fighting it out in any of the Grand Slams for next year.

That is something to really look forward to. The older generation and the next generation are playing at a better level than they did 10 years ago. The older players are losing their energy more slowly than the players 10 years ago. I always find it interesting to see how a new generation grows up and how the older players slowly understand that their time is over.

We only have the last 2 standing, Federer has retired and it seems that Rafa might be the next one, his body is also not doing good specially in the surface that he specialized because it really put a lot of stress.

So it might just be Djokovic against all new comers, he could be good for at least 2 years to battle and fought against the young generations lead by Alcaraz. So definitely next year will be an litmus test for them against Djokovic and to some extend Nadal if he can still play at clay.

@kemarit I strongly believe that Nadal and Djokovic will both play at least for one more year, but in 2024 either one of them or both could possibly call it quits as their bodies are barely keeping up these days. Furthermore I’m keen to see who’ll be the long term champion, because so far I don’t see any consistency in the current set of player’s and which makes me wonder if the records set by these 3 will ever be broken?.

For me it will be Djokovic who might stay a bit as obviously he is the younger of the big 3 and his worst injury if I'm not mistaken was in 2019, but he was able to come back win another slam and it was smooth sailing for him tennis wise, (not decision wise though like his covid stance).

As for the new set of players, again this is just me, it could still be Alcaraz, and he could be the most consistent of this new breed of players who wants to take over as the news set of big 3. But I do agree though, consistency will be the key for them to stay on top and be competitive.

Djokovic is honestly in much better shape then Nadal is. Djokovic is on his diets and his body can recover much faster and dosent have any injuries at all. While Nadals foot injury is fatal for him . So i think Djokovic can play for 3-4 years more while Nadal has maybe even just this year left.

That's true. In terms of fitness Djokovic stands high. The injuries Djokovic have got over the years is less compared to that of Nadal. Once Nadal was dominant and later he missed his momentum. From that point he wasn't able to take it back and he nowadays plays simple and never force himself hard.

Yes I agree that Djokovic is in better shape than Nadal. We could see Nadal retire sooner
than Djokovic and currently in the shape Djokovic is in he will be very competitive for a
number of years yet. Personally I cannot see Nadal competing for more than 2 years.

Nadal will be 37 next year and Djokovic will be 36, he doesn't really have much time left but
unlike Nadal he doesn't carry any injuries apart from the "mysterious" ones he picks up mid match.

On Nadal, he was beaten today in the United Cup by Norrie in 3 sets. I was actually going to bet
on Nadal for this match but I forgot to place my bet....luckily.

Yep, I think we are unanimous in saying that Djokovic is still in better shape, not sure how he takes care of his body as compare to the big 3 but he seems to endured the time and survived career threatening injuries. And if he even gets injured, he was able to come back strong more than the last time. Nadal though in the last couple of tournaments specially this years seems to be showing some signs of damage already and could be losing a step now. And it will just a matter of time for him to also follow Roger Federer into the retirement.

The big three don't play together anymore.
Federer has already retired and Nadal is struggling with numerous injuries, while Djokovic was banned from several GS because of his stance on vaccinations.
This is the very beginning of the year and it is very difficult to say how ready the players will be, but I personally believe that Djokovic will be especially motivated at the GS in Australia because of everything that happened to him last year.
When he is so motivated, Djokovic is the most dangerous and I believe he will be the early favorite at his favorite GS in Australia.
This GS and this year are probably the last chance for Djokovic to overtake Nadal in the number of GS titles, because younger players are getting better and more dangerous every year, and tennis giants Nadal and Djokovic will soon retire.

The big three don't play together anymore.
Federer has already retired and Nadal is struggling with numerous injuries, while Djokovic was banned from several GS because of his stance on vaccinations.

Yeah, I think Roger Federer has to be one of the greatest of all time, he was so skilled but also very diligent. He was great in many ways.

There are many players that are either very skilled but skip training, or some players that are not that talented but just train a lot, Federer had both.

In my opinion I think only Pete Sampras comes close to Federer.

Yes, I think it I'm going to bet on how will retire first, majority here will agree that it might be Rafael Nadal maybe in 2024. Nadal is older and so he is the most experience and obviously might be the most game played so his bodies are barely keeping him standing and playing grueling tennis next year.

Hard to say, maybe the new current set of players are still intimidated when they are facing either Nadal or Djokovic that's why they are very inconsistent. Besides this is not only your talent in the court, it also takes a lot of mental and be strong psychologically to be on top day in day out and this is what lacks the current young generation in my opinion.

It seems to me that you are talking about things that can't be expressed in numbers, about the skill of a tennis player, the beauty of his game...
According to this criterion, Federer is also for me the greatest tennis player of all time, and behind him are Borg and Lendl.
However, people always want to choose the best tennis player of all time based on specific numbers and results, and the most accepted criterion is the number of GS tournaments won.
Based on that criteria, it is obvious that there is a great battle between Nadal and Djokovic for the GOAT title based on the most GS wins.

Yea we have been over the GOAT topic a few times already. There are lots of ways
people assign the GOAT title but it has to be given on Grand Slams won. The GS' are
the pinnacle of the sport, they are all 5 set matches which as talked about before is completely
different to the other 3 set tournaments and there are only 4 of them per year. Federer has
been left behind in this regard and it's only a 2 man race now.

But . . . Federer will always be counted "one of" the greats of the sport.

There is big expectation around and these kind of performance will disappoint the followers. Lets see what gonna happen next with the new year.

Holger Rune will have the confidence high after the win against Djokovic at the Paris Masters. The odds were in favour of Holger Rune, and this is the first international career these two playing against each other. So, the prediction could go wrong. The surface will surely have its importance and lets see what is the outcome of the match.

And that is why we talk about this new set of tennis players, they need to be consistent if they want to remain on top.

Although this is just a tune up for Zverev, it not good to look at his resume if he will be beaten by a #81 rank player in Lehecka. On the contrary, just shows that maybe Jiri is good for the next couple of years and maybe a candidate to have a break through this year.

Let's see some tune up tournaments, perhaps tennis player are still not in their from at the start of this year though, just saying.

Holger Rune will have the confidence high after the win against Djokovic at the Paris Masters. The odds were in favour of Holger Rune, and this is the first international career these two playing against each other. So, the prediction could go wrong. The surface will surely have its importance and lets see what is the outcome of the match.
Told you he is gonna have problems, in the end he lost the match. Rune doesn't have results on hard and he is one of those players that get better further they come in the tournament. Meaning always possible to lose early but you don't want to meet them in the final rounds.

GOAT discussions are waste of time for me, everyone has his own favorite player and that is his GOAT. I am just considering myself lucky that I was watching most of the matches form all three and I don't really care who is the GOAT. I just know that if all three played at the same time I would watch Federer for sure and he is the worst one per most criteria.

Anyway we have a nice road to AO tournament in Adelaide starting today. Not many big names playing tonight but I would love to watch Rune - Nishioka match. Rune made big progress in his game last season but hard is his worst surface while Nishioka is the best on the hard surface. I think this will be much tougher for Rune than bookies predicted. My money is on Nishioka +4.5.

You were right Trofo, nice pick and nice win! Rune did finish 2022 on a positive, he really
finished strong so he was favourite for that match.

Adelaide will be interesting, on the men's side there are a few to watch out for, Djokovic obviously ,
Medvedev and Felix AA, I will be trying to back all 3 in some form in this tournament although
the odds won't be great.

I'm looking at the list of names and other than Rublev I cannot see any others winning this.

And Zverev also lost the next game. He lost against Fritz 1:6, 4:6. The first set was finished in 21 minutes.
In an interview Zverev has now said that he has actually only been able to play without pain since the tournament in Saudi Arabia 2-3 weeks ago. So it will take a little longer before Zverev will be among the top 10 again.
