620 Watts is quite a ways off the 400 Watts Yifu kept insisting on... Jeff, are you sure nothing's going haywire over there? Because I find it hard to believe a 50% larger power consumption is something they would've missed during development. Hell, it's even a tad over the maximum possible power draw they announced back in the day and they specifically mentioned that electricity consumption is lower than they initially estimated, bringing it at 400W.

[EDIT] I see Yifu updated the power consumption at 450W, but it's still a far cry from the 620 Jeff reported. So which is it?

thanks for clearing that up ngzhang.

Makes sense as it's a stand alone unit.  When quoting BFL's numbers, no one includes the PC it's hooked up to either.

A Raspberry Pi definitely doesn't pull 200w though and you can hook the BFL stuff up to any low power board with USB connectivity...

Couldn't you gain about 10-15% efficiency from the power supply using 220v instead of 110v at least with the power supply?

ATX power loses(82%), DC/DC power loses(87%), Fan(5~20w), etc…
Not sure it would benefit any of the other numbers?

So…

Yes, but those losses and loads were part of your power budget for 400 watts, correct? Don't be like Josh-- you were expecting less than 6.6 W/GH/s. Simulating the power performance of a chip like this is a lot more difficult problem than calculating how many watts you will need for the fans. Its completely understandable the simulations were slightly off, but still on the same order.

Dear Dr. NGZHANG,

That's not the reason for you to claim the power consumption of the unit is 450w.

The power consumption of the unit is what all it matters. You picked on BFL for the same thing and now you talked like its all fine and dandy.

LOL at ... saying fans power and all that. Should I add the power I need to cool my room?

You're really gonna site a 5W overhead? The fact is this thing uses 10x the amount of power, and they were dishonest by not warning anyone.

You should probably put the 620 watt figure on your website so that people are clear about the amount of power the whole unit consumes.

All I can say is that this is Bitcoin. I don't believe it until I see six confirmations.

I'd like to point out that the power usage for this unit is economically irrelevant, and not really necessary for discussion.

The statistic that matters most is time -- Avalon released first, so they win. That's really all there is to it.

What's the point of talking about something that doesn't come with the device?

I know BFL has a thing with physically attaching unrelated consumer hardware to its mining equipment, but design does not transfer by Osmosis. If I glue an IPad to my Bitcoin miner it doesn't mean my Bitcoin miner becomes a well designed and intuitive device.

I completely agree, the website currently indicates the total system wattage is 450w.

Just reminding everybody...you shouldn't compare the power consumption of a product that actually exists vs one that doesn't.

Avalon gets you more than 1 GH/s per 10 watts of power @ 120v.  Good luck beating that with what currently exists.

BFL can plug into a OpenWRT device LIKE one in AVALON. Even an Android phone would work.

Your question is does Raspberry Pi gonna have enough bandwidth as a host? Fck yes, it also shows you know crap about this.

No, I think it's nothing to do with the host PC.

To power the chips, we must convert 220vAC to 1.2v DC. And we must shift all heat out. This process cause power loses.

Any system needs to pay these extra power, including BFL.

So please do not use an " announced " chip power consumption number to compare with a full system power consumption number, it's meaning less.
