Interesting p2pool tidbit:
of the past 297 blocks (all that I can find available on the front page of p2pool)
149 found a block slower than the theoretical median
148 found a block faster than the theoretical median

EDIT: just found a block (worst block in over 2 months), so make the tally 150:148::slow:fast
luck is 45/95/92% over 7/30/90 days...

been busy helping ckolivas tweak cgminer code and building usable firmware directions for avalon.  ckolivas has greatly improved LP time on avalon ( supposedly ) he also made an avalon run at 1.3PH last night. :/

Anyways more work on p2pool soon.

it was an oopsie coding Cheesy

there's a bug in cgminer-monitor that watches accepted shares and at high difficulty ( >10000 ) or solo bitcoind kills cgminer.

bug fixed but while testing and fixing api

Well, I appear to be connected to about 7 peers today but it's all time-outs and handshake time-outs. I guess I'll check to make sure my network is OK but I haven't had any issues with anything else. If nothing else, it's probably about time I installed wireshark anyway.

So things are looking up. I ran wireshark and it looks like I was exchanging some data with at least one host. Then I had to quit the p2pool app and when I started it up just now, I'm getting a lot of messages about being sent transactions which have already been received. On the upside, I'm actually receiving something, I guess. On the downside, it seems that much effort is being duplicated. That may be unavoidable, I don't know.

Either way, looks like I should just leave it running for now.

I get this all the time when I first start and it seems like normal operation.

Good to know. Is there anything that shows up that indicates it's ready to go? Right now, it still gives me the downloading shares message. I'm mining on another pool until its ready but I'm ready to jump as soon as it's available. Does 0 verified /128 total imply anything?

Maybe I should just try running it on Linux. Not sure if I have all the dependencies though...

Once it gets past the "processing shares 1000...2000...3000..." and so on it's ready to mine.
I usually wait a little longer before mining but I don't think it matters.

It matters, sharechain need to be downloaded.
In fact, p2pool is throwing error if it is not ready to give work.

Linux attempt:

Quote
$ python run_p2pool.py
usage: git-describe [--all] [--tags] [--abbrev=<n>] <committish>*
/home/rich/p2pool/p2pool/p2pool/main.py:76: Warning: 'with' will become a reserved keyword in Python 2.6
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "run_p2pool.py", line 3, in <module>

  File "/home/rich/p2pool/p2pool/p2pool/main.py", line 76
    with open(address_path, 'rb') as f:
            ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

I'm guessing this means it needs a newer version of Python than the 2.5 mentioned in the OP (I'm on 2.5.1)

Note that this post is not relevant at all to my earlier issues which are occuring on a Windows 7 64-bit OS.

Do Avalon ASICs work with p2pool out of the box?  If not, does anyone know what settings need to be used?
Thanks!

I upgraded to python 2.7 on the Ubuntu box I'm running p2pool on.  It didn't break anything else, if that's what you're worried about.

Yeah. Thing is, I'm on Slackware and badly in need of a full OS upgrade (and CPU and hard drive and motherboard and memory come to that Cheesy ) so upgrading individual components is a little pointless and probably problematic. No biggie. I just wish I knew what was happening with the one I'm running on Windows. It has been asking for the same share, 34df1a09, for the last couple of hours.

simple answer, yes. long answer no, you need a special build of p2pool and the firmware we have made to fix delays and absurd long poll wait times because of the avalon driver built in delays.
