How are the test boards going?
Hey Zeek, Latest update is we're currently hammering away at the firmware and cgminer side of things. Making good progress but still a bit to go. The chips communicate in a unique way and there isn't much documentation out there, so it is quite a bit of work getting it all nutted out, but it's coming along. Current estimate on getting the board up and running is potentially the end of this week, or some time next week. I will of course let you all know as soon as its all happening. Cheers Barntech |

Glad you guys are getting the chips hashing. I imagine the lack of documentation is a real PITA. I'll be waiting at the edge of my seat to see it hashing. I'm also very curious to see how overclocking goes. I must admit I'm more pumped about the 8 chip boards though! Out of my own curiosity, what makes the Bit Fury chips so unique? Its quite cool learning whatever I can about these little bitcoin generators. I could see the very large number of cores requiring a different breakdown of how the equations are fed into the chips. |

Any word on powering multiple 8 chip boards through the mini plane? I think I saw it uses an ATX connector, so I'll need a Desktop PSU to power it? And the OP mentions ~0.8W/GH - so if I rounded to 3W/chip i'd be under 50W for 2 boards right? Will a 430W PSU be enough power?

Yes it the miniplane will be powered by an ATX connector so you will need a psu for it. And each board will use about 20-25W each from a rough estimate at the full 2.7GH/sec. So your 430W PSU will have enough power it could infact power 8 boards and still have leftover power. |

So your 430W PSU will have enough power it could infact power 8 boards and still have leftover power. If its a SINGLE rail PSU.If its a multi rail type,you could be in trouble by overloading one rail unknowingly  Get a Single rail PSU,please!!!  & keep it underpowered by 20% to keep it running cool.IE,500 watt PSU,only use 400 watts or so Personally,I'll be useing only the PCIExpress cables with adapters I'll make myself  |

Well,not many PSU makers identify what cables are on which rail.PCIExpress are on rail #1,4pin molex on rail #3,etc....You can overload a rail very easily,with single rail all the 12volt cables are supplied by ONE rail,you know exactly how much power you can draw,its on all cables that give 12volt  Modular PSU's are great,some even sell extra cables (Corsair,Silverstone I know do) that allow you to connect PCIExpress cables instead of say 4pin molex or even SATA power cables,you have more choices & expansion capabilities Just one example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812162010All manufacturers will or should state whether single or multi rail in the description,if not then assume its multi rail & move on. |

Hey guys. Just to clarify on the power front. Each 8 chip board will run at about 20W at full tilt, less if you are not overclocking it to superpowered turbo mode. So a fully stacked miniplane will come in at 80W or less. You won't need a hugely intense PSU to run them. In terms of an update on our progress, we're still bashing away in coding land. We're working on the firmware as we speak. Talking the BitFury dialect of SPI is a delicate task. We're also talking to the cgminer people about device drivers, in particular making sure we get well streamlined work/nonce buffering so that we get the most out of USB comms. Getting this part right may well make a big difference to the hashrate we can get from the chips. Also, one of our community is working on a web based UI for cgminer that will have specific Drillbit integration so tweaking your boards will be nice and easy. Barntech |
