I guess the PBA should be aware that the MPBL is improving, if they'll not improve then probably one day they'll be surprised that MPBL will be the top basketball league in the Philippines. It doesn't matter if PBA is controlled by the reach persons in the Philippines, what matters is what league the fans will support.
As long as the top teams are there, SMC and MVP teams, they're not going to be alarmed. They don't listen to their fans and they'll just keep going on no matter what the threat is within the league. We're really going to see the new leagues going up as MPBL became now a pro league, the players have a lot of place to go aside from going abroad with B League, there's now the MPBL and AFAIK, there's also the Filbasket but it's still quite new.

On the other hand though, if this will happen then more opportunities for other players. They don't need to wait longer just to have spots in the teams that we have right now but they will have more teams to choose with. What are the chances that this will happen? I don't know because if the PBA really wanted to expand and add more teams then they should've done it long time ago already but they aren't doing it until now.

That's right, and the salary will be more competitive as well as the competition is getting tougher. Actually, we have a lot of talented basketball players but only few of them are given the opportunity due to the limited number of big leagues, with the increasing popularity of MPBL, that gives them a good chance.

The basketball league is a business, MPBL players will only get more players if they are making good money from sponsors and from the live audience. So they need to be more popular and get good coverage in our favorite channels. Maybe a live stream on youtube and Facebook too, that would help increase their popularity.
They will also hit the mainstream soon and become the second big professional league, this is indeed a side business for those companies and they earn a lot for sure on the previous conferences, MPBL need a good exposure and hopefully to give more talented Pinoy a chance to play. Basketball is growing in our country even if there’s a pandemic, it is still living on a good position.
In fact, we've seen some old PBA players joining the MPBL like Cardona, Hubalde and Pingris I think (correct me).
It is only a matter of time that MPBL will be joining the mainstream and will be one of the leagues that we will be watching on television aside from the PBA. It will become more popular after this pandemic when everything is ok already like watching in basketball games with no restrictions etc. If PBA will not consider adding more teams in the future, there might be a chance that some talented players will rather join the MPBL than PBA.

Marc Pingris is supposed to join the MPBL as one of the team owners but since it's a conflict of business and as a respect for the Magnolia franchise, he opted out. Same with Peter June Simon.

Actually, MPBL is already mainstream but here in the thread, only a few know about it. Here in our place, MPBL is popular since players that were signed up by those teams are actually popular on their respective places, top inter barangay at most.

If PBA will not consider adding more teams in the future, there might be a chance that some talented players will rather join the MPBL than PBA.

That's impossible to happen. PBA still offers the best of the best offers. Teams in MPBL can't offer the same way PBA teams can offer.

Talented players will always target PBA. To those unsuccessfully drafted will goes to MPBL and will do their best there to be scouted by PBA teams.

They lasted this long so I think they'll survive, however, with good competition, their quality will deteriorate if they will not make an adjustment. The completion now is tougher because overseas teams are also expected in getting the best players in the PBA with a very tempting salary.

They are still the first option from most young aspirants, but it's true because of those alternative competitions and with overseas offers, PBA needs to adjust and hear what fans wanted, if they'll continue being like this, in which only few voices are being heard fans will soon find other leagues to support.

Remember that Chooks-to-go is now a legit partner of MPBL. If good business relations between business prosper, we don't know how far Mr. M and Sen. Pacman would go and aim for more success.  Wink Cool

PBA will not die, they just need to improve their system and everything will be back to normal. Though I agree that the system of MPBL is great and it gives more opportunity to many players, I still think that PBA will still be the top league in the future, local players abroad can still play in PBA though, so there should be no problem with that as long as the schedule allows it.

PBA has the support of big businesses of our country so i don't think that it will die that easy.

MPBL, though consider a professional league but talent-wise, its players are not comparable to the PBA players. MPBL also only has the support of Manny Pacquiao, if he loses in this election i think his support to MPBL will gradually die down and the league will be disband once again.

MPBL has the problem of logistics and tv coverage and it needs tons of money to address this issues so i don't think that they can sustain for a long time if this issues can't be fixed.

If the PBA wants to grow, they can increase the number of teams so more players with potential will have a chance to play. Some players in the B-League did not play in the PBA before they get to that league, some names are Thirdy Ravena, Kobe Paras and Dwight Ramos. So B-Leauge does not only focus their selection from the PBA, but in the entire basketball league in the Philippines.

Speaking of Dwight Ramos, seems he has built a name on his own in Japan and the way i looked at it, he is now a superstar plus the fact that his looks is not far from a Japanese actor, seems to me that we have to wait for a long time before we can see him play in the PBA. This no-nonsense kid is earning a lot so i think an offer of contract extension is likely to happen.

I just don't know why the PBA is having a hard time expanding. There are many companies years ago who have offered to enter the PBA but that didn't materialized maybe because of conflict of business interest.

When Phoenix tried to enter PBA for the first time, it was blocked by Petron. Chooks-to-go has sent an intent to join PBA but one team suddenly changed its name to Magnolia Hotshot "Ang Pambansang Manok" lol.

When you say conflict of business interest you are referring to that the PBA is like an entity of SMB or Pangilinan business. Actually, they should be independent but it's too obvious that they are controlled by this big company, so no chance that other big companies will be able to enter and have their own team as it's all business for these two big business tycoons.

Most likely it is.

They say there's a monopoly within, that's so obvious because a certain team owner can own multiple teams, and if their team played each other, that game is could be influenced by the decision of the team owner which would result in a bigayan or rigged game although they'll not gonna say it's happening but it's too obvious.

Well, it's been a business. I hope that there would be a replacement for the commissioners as they're the ones that are limiting the potential of each team.
They're making the other teams a farm team and they won't care for the welfare of the other players that are not so popular because they're sticking onto those that are popular. That's why the other opportunities that are knocking to the other players are being embraced.

Actually, there's a good advantage to that since without SMC, the league won't be last long. SMC is a good foundation that backing up the league. They also played a big role why PBA able to sustain their operation even with pandemic.

What I dislike is, these companies control the trade. Instead of talents are being distributed and spread to the teams, they are owning the talented players from these lower teams.

That's the only complaint I will raised regarding big companies.

It's true, SMC is likely the one that makes the league breathe because it's a huge company that can fund the league as much as they can. That's probably the reason why the advantage is always with them and these commissioners are giving them the pat on their backs.

What I dislike is, these companies control the trade. Instead of talents are being distributed and spread to the teams, they are owning the talented players from these lower teams.

It's also because of their capacity, if the salary is higher on their team, there will be more players that want to get on their roster. And this is like a tradition already that won't stop.

There's an advantage too but it's only in the tough times, I guess even if SMC did not own the majority of the teams the league will still survive if the team owners are capable of raising funds to continue its operation. What I'm trying to say is if the NBA were able to continue despite the pandemic, then that kind of setup would definitely work in the Philippines.

Manipulation and monopoly have already root in the system, it won't change unless they are willing to make changes for good.

This is right, the system wont change anymore especially if there’s money here that in favors to those companies and of course to the PBA. I don’t think big companies will let their teams down here easily, since they invested a lot of money here and even if there’s pandemic, I’m sure they are still making money that’s why they keep on playing.

I doubt that. There are teams already in the league that shows unable to handle the cost of their operation even before the pandemic. SMC is the only one who remains tough since the beginning that's why I doubt that the league will reach the current status of popularity if SMC only owned 1 or 2 teams.

But regardless, and again, I'm not really concerned about the dominance of a single or two companies in the league. It's just that, these big companies can influence the trade and according to them, the trade is mostly "fair".

Well, it's been a business. I hope that there would be a replacement for the commissioners as they're the ones that are limiting the potential of each team.

I agree with this. The Commissioners is the one that can make everything balanced.

Remember the golden days of PBA during Jun Bernardino's stint? Even San Miguel Corporation are owning the league, we won't see any farm teams giving players to the strong one. Everything is balanced and almost all teams have a popular main cager, unlike today where if you asked some people outside, they don't even know the main scorer of Blackwater or any lower-tier teams.

Does anyone with the latest news about the resume of the league? Manila will be on Alert Level 3 for the whole month and that was way too long to wait. I guess PBA should now consider a semi-bubble setup on the areas under Alert Level 2.

The time is running and postponing the current conference for a much longer period will affect the opening of the new season this year.

I wonder what the imports are doing now lol. This long break is not their usual. I mean, they like to play and play no matter what. It's like their time is being wasted here in the country as nowhere to do but to chill and relax. They are surely bored now since PBA has no update yet when to return. The expectation for NLEX to reach the Finals this conference is getting longer.

These imports are being paid so they have nothing else to do but wait or maybe just condition themselves thru exercise in their respective rooms. At least in that way they will not just sit and wait.

Well, I did a quick search on google regarding the updates of the PBA and I saw this. LINK
Quote
League Commissioner Willie Marcial said they will wait “two to three weeks” and assess the COVID-19 situation to determine the feasibility of resuming the halted import conference.
Its also stated in that article that Pasig City Mayor allowed PBA to play in Ynares Center as long as it is in a bubble set up but it seems like Commissioner Marcial is seeing the Bubble as the least option for them.

TBH, they are in a spot like in 2020 where they need to make a move where there are pros and cons. If they continue their current set-up, it might affect more people and other players. If they will pursue the bubble set-up, the spread rate might be lower to none but the revenue of the league is obviously lower. Its like a "Pick your poison" game for them. I think lets just wait for what they will do and lets hope that the cases will go lower within the next days to weeks.
