I suppose whoever finishes fifth in South America should still be strong favourites to qualify for the World Cup. Fifth place goes into a single match play-off against the fifth place team from the Asian qualifying, which at the moment looks like it would be either Australia or the UAE. It's a single match and anything can happen, but still, you'd have to favour the South American team in this scenario.

Since Peru is playing Uruguay in the next round, there is no mathematical possibility that both of these teams will be able to overtake Ecuador. Peru could overtake Ecuador, but in that case Uruguay would only be able to score the same number of points with Ecuador. Chile may be on par with Ecuador in points (instead of Uruguay). But all these teams have a negative goal difference, while Ecuador has +10. This is the first parameter that is taken into account when points are equal, so these teams have no chance to move Ecuador below fourth place.

Like I get that Brazil will be first, Argentina will be second and either Ecuador or Uruguay will be third and the other fourth. Uruguay is playing Peru and Ecuador is playing against Paraguay, which means that both teams will likely win the next games. Nobody guarantees anything but it is mostly likely that they will both win and they will keep their positions.

Ecuador probably will not pushing to win against Argentina because I'm sure they realized Argentina very strong during qualification matches but maybe they aiming draw results such as against Brazil but i think they will more focus for match against Paraguay to get full point because if they can able to win then Ecuador will succesfully secured top 4 which mean they will automatically went to world cup without play off match

It's not in the DNA of South American teams to do that. Ecuador will give everything to try to win Argentina.
Except Argentina manage to score several goals right at the beginning of the match, and even then, I think they will always try to go looking for the result.

That's why I see Ecuador trying to beat Argentina, even if the odds of getting it are low.

Without a doubt I think whoever finishes 5th on the South American competition will be the favorite to make it to the world cup.

I think it is interesting that this is going to be decided in a single match at Qatar. At previous editions the games between confederations were two-legged which gave the overall best team greater chances of advancing to the world cup, the fact that everything will be decided in a single match on neutral grounds means that anything can happen, after all even if the best team should still win this adds variance to the results, bringing even more interest to this particular game.

This is the best of all scenarios, but I start from a point, how can a country like Colombia, where they have every chance of qualifying, make such a mistake for a world ranking? They achieved a lot and lowered the level at the moment when they least had to do it? I'm sure Ecuador will appear in this year's world cup in qatar. I don't think Argentina will start playing against Ecuador. Ecuador must focus on the match against Paraguay, that match will be their golden opportunity to be able to appear in the world cup. I think Ecuador will finish in the top 4.

Ecuador is currently in third place in the Latin American zone standings and it is certain that they will get a ticket to Qatar this season. Remembering the opponent they face is Argentina, which has already qualified for the Qatar world cup, Ecuador only needs a draw to secure 1 ticket to Qatar. I agree with you, it's just a way to make more money, and as I said before... what FIFA needs to do is to resize the number of seats for each continent to change the total number, but this has already generated a good discussion here and it doesn't come in case we talk again.

Right now, the plan is to have 32 teams divided into 8 groups. How can they accommodate Portugal in to this, given that there is near zero chance that any of the qualified teams would pull out from the tournament? How they will manage a tournament with 33 teams? One group of 5 teams and remaining groups of 4 teams? I don't think that the member nations would agree to this idea.

It's not the first time these rumors have surfaced, when renowned teams are at risk of failing to qualify for the world cup. But FIFA has never made exceptions, with teams that have even won the World Cup several times. For example in 2018 Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup.

Why would they make an exception for Portugal? On top of that, Portugal, which isn't even one of the favorite teams of FIFA's friends. 

If Portugal can't qualify, it's your fault! They played poorly in qualifying, against weak teams.
Believe me, there are very few Portuguese who believe that the team will go to the world cup.

It's their fault and there's no doubt about it. But at the same time, we can't overlook the fact that they were just plain unlucky. In the first phase, they were included in a group that had strong teams like Serbia. And now for the playoffs, they need to face a super-strong Italy. I have already posted about this, but just feeling bad that so many good teams from UEFA and CONMEBOL are failing to qualify. It's not their fault that they're being placed along strong teams, unlike the case with AFC or the CAF.

Name at least one source of this information, I have not heard this anywhere. These are absurd rumors, since changing the format of the tournament in favor of one (or even several) teams will lead to a big scandal and for FIFA this will be more of a loss-making action than a profitable one.
