CLAM is a great altcoin, there's no reason it can't be used for other applications outside of gambling

What's the advantage of CLAM over other existing altcoins? What are the unique features?

That you can use them to play or invest in Just Dice Smiley

i can do this with btc already, much more popular

No, actually, you cannot Smiley

Real talk though, what is the point of using Clams outside of Justdice?

(Against my better judgement) I decided to hold onto my 9.6(?) clams from my 2 claims and trade with them rather than cash out. I've almost doubled my clams, but I've still lost money, as the price has plummeted from .013 per to .005 per. Is there any reason for me to continue to hold?

You can speculate that some day it might be used for something other than casino chips at Just-Dice. Or maybe not. Hard to say.

Is there any evidence that Clams could one day potentially fill a niche outside of dice money? I've seen a lot of talk, but that's all there has been since the launch... talk. I can't see anyone taking an altcoin that is literally given away too seriously.

I personally do not believe that gambling is such a horrible frontier market.
In this case it is gambling + staking/mining.
I would expect that the CLAM on JD alone places us as the highest percentage actively staked network; proving that our PoWS incentives work.

As has oft been bandied about in this community, network systems benefit and gain utility from network effect.
We have a handful of solid services.  The emphasis in the previous sentence is important.
Better a handful of solid services than hundreds worth little.

The vast majority (not all) of alternative "cryptos" have little behind the curtain.
We have been plodding along for over a year with significant improvements in the codebase.
We intend to continue doing so.

I am personally the most biased person in the room - so you will, of course, have to look elsewhere for market advice.

I like PoWS better than the usual PoS reward schemes, but I wouldn't say that JD specifically is an example of success. You have almost all the working stake centralized in one place.

A concern, very true.
If it was any other operator than dooglus it would be even worse.

That said, we have repeatedly suggested that members of the community put their skills where their mouth is and create a competing stake-pool/investment opportunity.
dooglus has intentionally left his fees at 10% with the expectation that such a competitive service would arise.

It hasn't happened as of yet - but I expect it will.

Well I'll tell you what. I have no interest in creating a fancy service but I'm running a node on a reliable server anyway. If anyone wants to entrust me with your coins I will stake them for free, and pay you a proportionate share of the rewards when you want them back. Conditions are:

1. Long term passive holdings only. I don't want to be making a lot of transactions in and out.

2. 0% fee but you are welcome to tip or making a donation to one of my projects.

Another niche ? Difficult to say. The gambling niche is not bad as said before. There is a potential growth and overall it could go up against $ as Bitcoin goes up as well. The main worries are big diggers and actual centralization of staking that mean that everybody relies on Dooglus ! It's a pity that the digger stepped in when we were having a nice hype but I could buy quite low then Wink.

I might be a little closed minded these days, but I do not see the need for crypto currency outside the crypto market....at least not for now. Maybe someday when the vast majority of people start using cryptos. For example, I do not need to use BTC, or CLAMS for that matter to pay my light bill, buy gas, buy a taco...I can use cash for that, or my cards, or if I want to get crazy..Apple pay.

I think cryptos fill the niche they need to fill: the crypto niche.

edit: I was kind of in a bad mood when I wrote this a couple hours ago. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the day that cryptos become a widely used currency that you can use anywhere.

The movement will be slow, but as freelancers, contractors and even employees will get fully or partly paid in Bitcoin, some will use it directly to buy things (there are many ways to spend your bitcoins online now), and maybe the bills in the future. Overall, it's slow but we are moving into the right direction I think. The problem is that for the moment, the ease of use is not quite there if you don't use a third party online wallet, mostly considering security and backups.

People do not have to do anything fancy, more people can simply run a wallet full time like I have been doing for over a year.

a few hundred clams with stacks over 11 in size would do the trick if more got involved.

There are few projects for staking pools but the problems is that people need to give money to a third party and we've already got scammers on it (StakeMiners anyone ?). People you can trust as much as Doog are quite rare around !

Its easy enough to stake coins on your own, you don't have to use a 3rd party

I advice people who want to claim their free CLAMS to do it themselves.
I downloaded the clam client, waited (a long time, that's true) for sync, imported my old empty BTC wallet and got CLAMS that I sold for BTC on poloniex. But it's worth the effort Smiley
Don't use these profiteers' sites that give you dust for your BTC/LTC/DOGE addresses!
