Ugly as hell, but it works.

what are you guys using for "open" cases with 4 cards?

I'm doing nothing, just putting a case fan on top of the 4 blowing against the small area between the cards. Seems to do well.

Spreading the cards out as much as possible and strapping a fan to the top of them. That does the job.

Time is money. This means that if you have spare time, you can use it to make money.

Modular, open, and stack-able miner case.

amazing how much cooling 2 120mm fans really does.  I had crazy temps... gpu1 : 91c, gpu2 : 70+c, gpu3 : 80+ c.  added the 2 fans and under load right now I'm at 54,63,79.

Finally got one of my custom shelves built last night!

Holding 4x5830

I have a couple more machines, but they are more boring.

Very nice, but are you not worried about the cards getting very hot in direct contact with the wood?

what do you think the combustion point of wood is?  it's much much higher than what even the core of these cards gets up to

Yesterday I finished my second mining rig. While my first was built in neat black case, this time I wanted to improve airflow and chose foldable plastic crate as the case. Setting it up was very easy, many wiring options, looks nice, its portable! and the airflow is almost perfect.

The motherboard is MSI 790FX-GD70 with 4x PCie-16, 3x Sappire 5380 Xtreme inserted. Currently I am using linuxcoin booted from USB stick. Note the white foam blocks (half an inch wide) which spread two cards a bit.

I have very good experience with Arctic F12 Pro coolers. They are cheap, silent and have a large push of air. However, can be mounted only in single direction, thats why the are outside of the boxes. Dangerous! Keep fingers out!

I still have to experiment what fan placement is the best. Whether current placement, both above, or both pushing air from opposite sides.

Just finished this one yesterday. My first rig was in a nice case and all but this one I was trying to save as much money as possible. The only things I bought were 2 x 6950's, 2 PCIe to PCI32 adapter cards and an ANTEC 750 WATT PSU. The motherboards are some old crap ones I had lying around. One is out of a DELL computer as you might recognize and the top one is a shitty PC Chips mobo (hate this motherboard, the only thing its good for is mining).

The top PSU is an old ULTRA 700 WATT and is powering the hard drives, fans and top motherboard. The bottom PSU is the new ANTEC which is powering the two 6950's and bottom motherboard. At first I tried running 1 card off the old Ultra but that didn't smell to good lol.... I grounded the two together to try and illuminate any floating point ground there might be. So far its been mining straight for about a day with no problems. On the right side is a breadboard circuit I quickly threw together to start both at the same time. I first was just pushing both power buttons at once but that gave odd results sometimes if you were off Tongue .

Currently the DELL motherboard is beating the PC Chips board at 343 Mhash/s at 900 MHz core. The PC Chips board is at 336 Mhash/s with 900 MHz core. Both can go a bit faster with -f 1 but I haven't test that to much yet. Both running Ubuntu 11.04, SDK 2.4 with latest drivers. The temps are nice, top card is ~62C and bottom card is ~58C with fans at 65%.

All in all I'm pretty damn proud of the monster (or mess) I've created.

just ensure components mechanically stable/fixed[by pastic strap ?] and remove dust frequently by VC.
also backup power supply could be good investment too.

Probably a bit off-topic (sorry), but since I don't know how they're exactly called I don't know what so search for: what are these PCIe extention cables? I can't seem to find them at my regular hardware shops Sad

Ah thanks, that yields much more results. Also, if I've seen that correctly there are graphics cards being used with the PCIe x1 slots, didn't know that worked too oO

Pretty good hack - I have the same motherboard coming in on Monday and was wondering how I'd mount 4 cards in the donationware case I salvaged.  What'd you use to cut the case apart?  Looks like yours is aluminium, but the one I'll be dealing with is steel.

Thank you, although I cannot take credit, my friend works at a steel shop, he easily cut it and smoothed it with a grinding disc.  I believe this case was 1/8" steel.  It use to be an old antec case.

Also I ordered like 4 different extenders from china off ebay for less than $20USD.  just search ebay for pcie 1x or 16x extender or riser although they are marked as shipped i do not know when they will be here.  usually stuff comes pretty fast from china, but who knows....
