after reading the miner source code, i think we dont need disk space at all
we can create opencl kernel of this code : https://github.com/BurstProject/pocminer/blob/master/src/pocminer/util/MiningPlot.java

nonce argument is any nonce u want, addr is ur account number
we can bruteforce any nonce within 240 seconds each block using GPU
and broadcast the best nonce that produce lowest deadline

assuming GPU can do shabal256 at 1 GH/s , that is equal to 240 Giga Nonce (240 secs blocktime) which is equal to 60 GB of disk space ( 1 nonce = 0.25MB )
and again, getting into 1 TB disk space performance, will require atleast 17 GPU (assuming 1 GH/s is accurate)
conclusion : if it is near 1 GH/s its cheaper to use harddrive than GPU

and loking at a glance of shabal256 it is really cheap in computation, i think we really need replace shabal with more memory intensive algo such as scrypt or something to make harddrive mining is far more efficient than GPU or future ASIC
shabal256 may be computationally cheap, but generating 1 plot does many thousands of rounds of it, instead of the couple rounds you see in most coins. I doubt a gpu could compute with hdd read speed considering how many rounds are run, although there's no current implementation to prove/disprove this. I would consider a gpu miner with bad efficiency a good thing however, since it would still help speed up plot generation for hdds by a significant margin. If I am proven wrong, we can always adjust the miningplot constants to increase the ram. Using a larger buffer, but decreasing the hash cap by the correct amounts could result in roughly the same computation complexity as exists now, but with a much higher ram requirement per thread. This would be negligible for pcs, but could cause gpus to not be able to use all their cores due to lack of ram.

My plots are all cut up because, I would close it and reopen it. This equals to 489 GB. But according to the calc, I have 45 tb of wasted space.

The tool does not know if you completed the plots - and assumes you did.
With these files you have LOTS of overlapping nonces!
Oh I see, where ever I left off when I stopped generating I just set it to start at that number
the tool could refer the filesize to estimate how many nonce are included and then adjust the count in the filename   Wink

you can check your plotfile filenames against their filesize with this commandline:
ls -la plots/|awk '{print $5"_"$9}'|awk -F'_' '{print ""$4"*256*1024-"$1"" }'|bc

if the result is != 0 the filesize does'nt match to the plots in the filename

So 1TB drive, 24 hours, new settings, still no blocks found. I'm about to give up and FUD this coin!

You can't have 1 TB worth of plots in 24 hours. Unless you have some magic way of creating them.

It takes time but the blocks do come. They are getting much much harder to find but it can still be done.

you don't need a magic way. i create 2gb plots within a minute so 24h are quite long for 1 tb.
you only have to use many machines to calc them  Grin

Haha funny man... You're funny, funny man.

This is not funny. I have 3 computers mining this crap (1TB HDD, 500GB HDD & 250 GB HDD). No coins yet. Waste of time, energy and harddrive life. I'm giving it until 12pm EST Saturday. After that, this coin is worthless. If a coin cant be mined by "normal" folks, then there will be no place for this coin.

Check your passphrase text file and make sure that's what your typing in for for the burst page login, I screwed that up at first too.  On that note I seem to be averaging 1block every 24-26 hours with 800gb.

I feel you, people keep poking fun of us people that haven't mined a single block ever for this coin. Just because they are gloating they have soooo many blocks with much less storage or whatever. Myself, I've gone 96 plus hours on 1.5TB and zero blocks. Even if this is a low energy mining, zero coins is still zero coins. Eventually energy cost will start to become more of a factor as time goes by. To this date, this is the first coin that I never found a block in the early stages of mining. People must have some kind of insider trade secret or something. I've mined Scrypt the begin of last year, X series coins, XCN, CryptoNote, Proof of Momentum, etc without any issue, actually got blocks. I'm not purposely trying to spread fud, but this has a bad distribution in my opinion. A pool should have been a priority in the beginning before being release to give fair distribution/mining option.

I've done all the steps to get this running right, that's not a step I missed on. Zero blocks still and can't get a deadline below 1500, averaging 10k~150k....I might just do everything all over again and just make a single plot with all 3 500GB drives spanned/raid0 together to see if that helps, recreate the plot.

Its quite difficult to find a block now. I have 6TB of plots and more than 14 hours passed between the last 2 blocks. My bet is: You just had bad luck.

Still HAVING really bad luck, feel bad for others that are in the same boat as me. I might just wait until a pool is establish before mining again. I'll try making one plot with the drives spanned/raid and do a new passphrase as a last resort for solo mining. I'm still at awe that people with smaller storage are so lucky getting blocks still.

I've gotten 6 blocks with 500 GB, but I'm probably going to stop mining soon, as I can't keep up with everyone's Terabytes.

Why would you stop mining?  If your system is up and running, why not have this going in the background.  Costs little in terms of system resources once your plots are created.  I understand if you need the HD space back, but if not - why not let it continue to mine?  Maybe you'll hit a block once a week or month or whatever.  It's still money...

I think the earlier comment about the password is valid. I used the wrong password for the wallet during my first hours of mining and it showed 0 blocks. After realizing my mistake I found that I had hit 3.

1.5 TB for 96 hours. Something is wrong or you you are VERY unlucky. 3-4 blocks per day is my avg. and that is with 2 TB currently. (I am still making plots)

Did you sync the clock?

Neat!

"Get Paid To Use Your HDD" .. sounds a little dubious
how about "Energy efficient mining using your HDD"?

Please be sure your using the password from your passphrase.txt file and NOT the password.txt file!

It's synced with the nist.gov server. I just decide to redo everything all over again and just do a JBOD with the drives to make a single larger plot instead. I'll give it 48 hours and see if anything positive occurs.

It's not money - that's the problem. The eco system in self contained to maybe less than 20 people. If I find a block of say 5000 Burst and sell it for .05 BTC, then I have .05 BTC. Having 5000 Burst does nothing for me. I'm stopping my mining early. I'm afraid either i'm unlucky, this coin is to difficult to mine now or something else more sinister - my HDD is being used by dev to do something nefarious.

I haven't studied the block finder addresses but I imagine it is much more than 20 people. You do realize that with a pool or solo your results are going to be the same over time. Meaning look at it after 2 weeks and not after few days.

The coin is less than a week old.  Don't give up so easily.
