The more open you are about your hardware compared to BFL the more customers you will get. People appreciate transparency. Good stuff.

This I agree with this. While I do happen to be a BFL fanboy - I like the level of customer service here so much, that I'm making room in my budget to start purchasing some bASIC equipment as well... Never hurts to diversify.

I tried to ask this as a general question about FPGA mining devices in a separate post on the forum, but the post is somehow gone. 

Has anyone tried to use the ModMiner Quad for other purposes than Bitcoin mining?  Are the I/O capabilities good enough for e.g. crypto purposes (WPA cracking, HDMI decryption, etc) or to work as a DSP in a SDR based OpenBTS femtocell, etc?  Anything else you can think of?

The ModMiner Quad can be re-purposed to do pretty much any other computation common with FPGA's as long as it does not require on board memory. I have already seen someone use one for WEP cracking (hobbyist) and I am sure that is just the tip of the ice burg.

You would need to modify our firmware (which is opensource btw)

and write a bitstream for whatever type of hashing you had in mind.

No, Sorry, my 4HE (Fantec 4860(?))  have always three 5970 with three Gentle typhoon with 5400 rpm for best Air Flow. 4x 5970 are to much for 19" with Standard ATX power Supply. In this Case you have no Air Flow between the cards.

Probably switched hosts and is waiting for dns for the domain to pass over is my guess.
