1581  Other / Meta / Re: Post history (action=profile;sa=showPosts) sometimes renders <pre> tags too wide on: January 04, 2023, 08:50:37 AM
Anyone else notice that if you wrap something that contains really long lines with [code] tags, that it'll look okay in the actual post, but if you browse your post history afterwards, it'll render much wider than the surrounding posts and throw everything out?

Although it doesn't happen to me too often, I know very well what you're talking about!
And I hoped that someday it'll get fixed.

I messed around for a few (very frustrating) hours trying to get to the bottom of this, and managed to come up with the following SMF patch:

Thank you!
I am sure that this will be added. It's, after all, a bugfix (and, no offense, but I find this more useful than the "OP" patch).
1582  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: 26 BTC Stolen on: January 04, 2023, 08:45:24 AM
Don’t think the story can be solved before OP write more.

This pretty much sums it up. However, while I do trust MJ, he may want to clear this up beyond doubt and only theymos can do that. Hence I support Pmalek point/request.
But it's really up to MJ, I think that he should ask theymos, if he considers it necessary.
Again, for me it's clear. The lack of proof of identity (i.e. signed message) was the root for disaster (if there was indeed a disaster).
1583  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin developer @lukedashjr's wallet was hacked on: January 04, 2023, 08:40:18 AM
This is another skeptical me argument hehehe.

"Don't trust, verify", remember? And then why trust somebody's claims, no matter who it is, if the things just don't add up?!

This might also be a way to prepare for an exit from holding bitcoin without being persecuted by the community? Claim he was hacked, mix the coins, keep the coins then sell on the next bull market when he has 10x of the present value. This is $20 million and very much enough for his retirement.

I love the mix of drama, conspiracy and price speculation Cheesy Grin Grin
One thing that still looks odd is that all this shit show goes on only on Twitter. Nothing on Mastodon and nothing in here.
Another thing that must be cleared up is what was his actual "cold storage" setup.
And claiming that there's a CoinJoin in a tx that's actually clean...
...yeah, the things just don't add up. And I've got some logical explanations for this and that, still, far from enough.

I consider the hacking of 2 Twitter accounts easier than hacking into a cold storage.
The boating accident theory is also a not-too-bad idea.
1584  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Old phone as cold storage? on: January 03, 2023, 08:46:31 PM
Even the NSA have admitted they can still track phones which are in airplane mode, so your phone must still be sending and receiving some data.

Of course, its telephony can see what antennas are around in order to send SOS calls, which can be done without SIM. NSA can find out what antennas the phone was interogating and triangulate/approximate the position.

And if NSA wants to get in your devices, the old phone you start now and then to sign transactions is your smallest problem Cheesy
But I don't deny it you have a point. Maybe a bit paranoid, but not too much.
1585  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos is living the high life; BitcoinTalk is inaccessible without JavaScript on: January 03, 2023, 06:53:28 PM
I know you come up with this so I prepared this for you:

Do you understand the concept of off-topic? Or I have to report so you can call that your free speech is censored?
Let me clear it up: I don't care of that theory and it's, again, off topic.

Regarding your comments on the quotes, it appears you didn't even read the original topic, which was about CloudFlare making bitcointalk.org inaccessible without JavaScript.

With Cloudflare I do agree. With "cannot quote" I don't. And you've put both in the same topic, although, if Cloudflare doesn't allow you in, quoting is the least of your concerns.
You've put together two topics/issues. I've answered to one. Next time be clearer.
I did quote the part I was answering to. Are you sure you've paid attention?

And in order to avoid Cloudflare kick in too often, avoid reading all the posts of a topic in one go (the "all" button); it could make your life easier.
Don't you find interesting that neither my Tor Browser, nor my non-js Firefox had any issues with Cloudflare? I had to force an "all" posts view for Clouflare to kick in.
1586  Other / Meta / Re: Moderator Account may be compromised? on: January 03, 2023, 06:42:52 PM
But... these are well known... Do you think that Luke-Jr was not aware of such procedures and he made am amateur mistake...?

I really don't know what was Luke-Jr setup, that's why I still have my doubts that this story is for real.

franky1 has a post in another topic which could be relevant information (if it's correct, which I don't know). There may be that some of the old/original bitcoiners may have a different view on what is cold storage and that wallet may have been exposed to his LAN, which probably got compromised.

Of course, while any minimal security measures were okay 10 years ago, anybody with a sense of reality would know that more and more security is needed with every year passing and every more dollar on the price.
1587  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Old phone as cold storage? on: January 03, 2023, 05:12:33 PM
Another argument is that a burglar is unlikely to expect you to use a smartphone for a cold storage. If he sees a phone to steal, the steps he'll do later are pretty much known. Reset, and sold to some stranger for a ridiculously low price.

This can be a good point indeed: basically hiding the cold storage in plain sight.

Also, as said, you can use a password to encrypt everything.

True, this part I forgot about.

The best argument for not using a smartphone as cold storage, is that desktop wallet software such as Bitcoin Core and Electrum are simply more tested, and are consisted of a bigger community. Another good argument, is that a linux distro is far more tested than a smartphone OS.

This is a good argument. Still, this doesn't make the cold storage unsafe per se, especially since the wallet seed has backups.
1588  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos is living the high life; BitcoinTalk is inaccessible without JavaScript on: January 03, 2023, 04:57:39 PM
I use firefox-esr and set about:config JavaScript to false.

OK, I'm trying now with Firefox (normal, latest, not esr), also with about:config JavaScript to false. And I've also disabled my add-ons...
Preview is working, I'll also post now. And... it works.

Did it occur to you to try with a different setup, maybe you have set something else in your browser and broke it?

Sorry, but your conspiracy theories are off topic here.
1589  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin can be banned or stopped by governments on: January 03, 2023, 04:39:37 PM
Indian government (maybe other also)  say that " to ban cryptocurrency we need global help" my question is : can bitcoin be banned if all government will agree to ban bitcoin

i am something less experience and has bad english so ignore

* They can make businesses no longer accept Bitcoin and will say they've banned it.
** Of course, people can still transact and use it. Is it a ban? Not really, but what's reality when people believe everything that's on TV?

* They can ban mining and say it's done.
** Of course, while most businesses will leave to mine elsewhere, some may use VPN and such and still mine it.

* Stopping all the bitcoin related traffic on the internet... I don't think it can happen without completely shutting off internet

* Getting all countries agree to act together ... I will not live long enough to see that happen. Neither you.

Is this good enough as explanation?
1590  Other / Meta / Re: Theymos is living the high life; BitcoinTalk is inaccessible without JavaScript on: January 03, 2023, 04:26:45 PM
While you can disable JavaScript, this will make quoting on BitcoinTalk impossible

I'm just quoting you from Tor browser with Javascript disabled (Security Level: Safest).

Yes, JS is necessary for the initial captcha, unless you get your ccode from another session. But you really can do this once from somewhere else - if you are interested in your privacy you know this very good. But the rest seems to work fine without JS.
An no, this is not censorship, this is a small price to pay, as part of keeping the forum safe from attacks. If you would have a website, you'd know as much.

You seem to only see drama around you. Take a deep breath, chill, think twice before you write. If you just dump your anger to the forum people will fail to see any usefulness in taking you serious.
Take it as a friendly advice or ignore it.
1591  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin, Privacy, Mixers on: January 03, 2023, 03:54:07 PM
And lastly in terms of protecting a user's footprints, can a domain host give (sell) out this information to third parties ?

The advised way to access a mixer is to do it over Tor. This being said, there's no valuable information to sell, since those not using Tor may not be actual users/customers, instead only some curious people. So I would not count on getting much of info from the browser.

Of course, if a mixer is a honeypot, they can lie about not keeping client information and instead sell all the info to chain analysis companies or government agencies.
After all, trusting a mixer still means.. trusting.

Of course, unless a mixer was specifically built for as honeypot, it won't be doing that (keeping and selling user info) because it will mean they admit they are mixing funds and some agencies may not like that. So let's not become too paranoid...
1592  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can offline wallets ever be hacked? on: January 03, 2023, 01:59:07 PM
Yes... offline wallet can be hacked. For stance, the owner might forget his/her access code and seek the services of an hacker like the case of Joe Grank who hacked Trezor one wallet and recovered about $2million value in Theta. You can read it up here:
https://cointelegraph.com/news/engineer-hacks-trezor-wallet-recovers-2m-in-lost-crypto/amp

It worth mentioning that he had physical access to that old Trezor and also the vulnerability he managed to exploit was fixed since then by Trezor.
You know, if a thief manages steal your cold storage and then manages to steal your coins off it... it's not really considered a vulnerability of the cold storage...
1593  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Old phone as cold storage? on: January 03, 2023, 10:21:10 AM
and phones are extremely hard to made truly air-gap

I keep seeing people telling that phones are hard to airgap and.. sorry, but I'm not convinced.

* one can remove the SIM then mobile internet will no longer be used
* one can turn off NFC (if available); however, not a great attack vector
* one can turn off Bluetooth and go airplane mode; however, not a great attack vector unless 100% targeted
* one can remove/forget all known Wi-Fi SSIDs and set the phone not connect to any other/unprotected SSID

One very good argument is that a burglar will most probably steal that smartphone even if it's older, put a SIM in it and turn everything on, making indeed phones somehow risky for cold storage.
Another very good argument is that somebody in the house would do exactly that too (put a SIM in) because of not knowing it's a "special use" phone.

But all this can easily happen with a laptop too (stealing or plugging in a network cable). And let's not compare online securit between old laptops and old phones because both are bad and also dependent of owner's skills in setting them up.
1594  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can offline wallets ever be hacked? on: January 03, 2023, 09:51:51 AM
Now my question is how a big bitcoin developer like him lost access to his offline wallet.  So what are the risks of using offline wallets?

I don't believe that story yet, so I'll answer only about the question on the offline wallet.
An offline wallet can be hacked into if the user is (very) sloppy and unlucky:
* use of USB to transfer things (usually unsigned/signed transactions) in/out of that device
* storing (or handling!) wallet backups, seed backups and similar information on the online/hot computer, or even worse, on e-mail or cloud
* doing regular backups of the offline computer and keeping the backups somewhere accessible from the internet
* also, obviously, actual access of somebody in the house (or bank/safety deposit or wherever people keep them) and stealing backups of wallets or seed
1595  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin developer @lukedashjr's wallet was hacked on: January 03, 2023, 09:41:08 AM
I tend to believe more and more it's a prank.

* The story is still only on Twitter and not on Mastodon, although it tells everywhere "Mastodon preferred"
* Stealing from the cold storage would be possible only if the user would be more than incredibly sloppy/uncautious.
* I don't think that somebody for so long in Bitcoin would ask for FBI help, and also would not do it on Twitter.
* Luke Dash Jr is (proudly!) asking for donations for his work; was he indeed owning 200 BTC ?!

I *know* that Peter Todd has confirmed the story, but the things still don't add up.

as for the supposed 'coinjoin mixer' scenario luke hints.. strange thing is his raided coins went into the 1YAR address.. but have not moved out.

Yes, that too; I've followed some of those transactions and it looks more a consolidation of funds than anything else.
1596  Other / Meta / Re: Moderator Account may be compromised? on: January 03, 2023, 09:01:13 AM
What can we also do to better ourselves and avoid such situation? Is there anything he could do do avoid this?

Use cold storage safer, i.e. transfer tx via images, not USB stick between cold and hot storage or simply use hardware wallet.
Make sure the private keys have never been and never will be on a computer that will go online, not even for printing them.

This kind of precautions should at least keep the cold storage safe.

The next difficulty adjustment will make it 5.2% easier for miners.

It's already 3.4% and decreasing; I guess that the miners affected by the bad weather are firing their gears up again.

And yes you don’t understand how crypto works, I’ve ask told you multiple times that you can blacklist coins you can only blacklist crypto wallets. It’s a shame that you are on a crypto forum thinking you are right and you csn blacklist coins individually.

So you say that if some coins from Blacklisted address A are sent to address B and then to you they're absolutely fine, because they're not from a blacklisted address/wallet.
You're telling big words, but it looks like it's you who doesn't understand much.

I have received private messages even from legendary users, that are agreeing with me.

This is a good one Cheesy

I would need to connect the cold wallet to the laptop/smartphone & copy+paste the key right?

I am researching it as we speak. Any tips would be greatly and humbly appreciated.

I think that you may be misunderstanding something, so let's make the terms clearer.
Cold wallet or cold storage is usually a wallet software running on a laptop that's always offline.
Hardware wallet is an external device that can create wallet seed and sign transactions; this also needs a wallet software running on a laptop or smartphone, but they can be (should be) connected to the internet.

So, in order to get the master public key from a cold wallet you need either an USB stick, either (better) a camera, since Electrum allows sharing all kind of info, including the master public key, as QR image. If this is the "connect the cold wallet to the laptop/smartphone" you had im mind, then maybe you've used bad terms and I'm too strict.

If you meant hardware wallets... then there's no sharing of keys between the HW and the software wallet from your laptop/smartphone you should do. By connecting the HW to the wallet software the wallet software knows what to do in order to show you the addresses and request signing transactions. In this case, some wallets (Ledger Nano S plus, Trezor T, Trezor one, some others too) work with cable connection, others (Ledger Nano X, Satochip, some others too) work with wireless connection (Bluetooth or NFC) hence don't need physical connection.
1600  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin developer @lukedashjr's wallet was hacked on: January 02, 2023, 10:47:25 AM
What would be the safest and most secure setup for a cold wallet? I am now unsure how to transfer from cold wallet to an online address without compromising security.
Would it be possible to transfer BTC from cold wallet to another cold wallet and then send from that secondary cold wallet to an online address? That way my original cold wallet isn't connecting to the internet or being directly exposed?

Get a hardware wallet. Or a SeedSigner device.
...Or set up both your cold storage and companion watch only hot wallet with Electrum on laptops with cameras, hence allowing you transfer those transactions (unsigned and signed) as QR code images.

If you're adding a secondary cold storage:
* you're doing it wrong
* you've misunderstood something and need to read more

However, this is off topic, if you have more questions please make a new topic with them.
