1901  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Coming next week-- the world's first handheld Bitcoin device, the Ellet! on: June 09, 2012, 05:58:55 PM
Update: Added the following update to the first release statement.

  • Connectivity -- The Ellet can connect on the go to any mobile network around the world, no need for any additional mobile accounts, bothersome SIM cards, or the purchase of any external repeater systems. It also works on Wifi too to provide you with uninterrupted signal to suit your needs.
Really, do tell. If there is no SIM card, that means it can only run on CDMA to access a general purpose mobile network, and those exist almost solely in the USA, since they are old, outdated technology. The rest of the world uses GSM, which requires a SIM.

I am aware that you can access mobile networks at a significantly reduced price for "telemetry" applications that do not require E911 access, but it isn't free and still requires the presence of an identifying technology such as a SIM card or hardcoded MEID (or R-UIM cards locked to specific hardware).

So tell us: What exactly is this magical new no-cost global network, what specific technology is it based on, and how do you plan on it remaining free? I assume at this point that it is free because of your statement "no need for any additional mobile accounts".

Let this be a lesson to you to not trade with newbies without some due diligence!

Did you think you were going to get lucky? Gambling instinct?

Escrow is available - use it!

See if you can ask someone what the typical cost per ton is, I bet its higher than I originally planned out by like 30%. I've asked for ballpark quotes pretending to be a customer but very few have responded.
Well, I might have a connection at Emerson, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't touch the cost or financial stuff. He just might be able to get me the occasional free stuff. But I'll see if he can ballpark it or tell me who to ask.

Not really sure if this has been addresses but forum search didn't find anything (as it is usual)

the search box is broken most of the time and doesn't find anything.

try clicking "search" menu item and search from there. that usually works for me.
The thing to remember is that the search box works differently depending on where you are. If you search while you have a thread open, it only searches within that thread. I think the same applies to when you only search within a specific section instead of the whole forum. It still could use a lot of improvement though.

That server couldn't even run a tenth of mtgox's trading engine load.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. How portable is it? I assume that it runs on the extremely stripped down Java VMs that such phones use, so it should be reasonably compatible.
1908  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTB: 3+ MATCHING Small Raptors, VelociRaptors or SSDs on: June 08, 2012, 09:26:54 PM
WD actually just released terabyte sized Velociraptors, but with the exception of the seek times the 3TB drives are cheaper and faster.

Would you be short-stroking these? If so, just use SSDs

Reward split to message maker and verifier.   Thanks!
Thank you for the tip.
1911  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Namecoin v3.50 : faster & better on: June 08, 2012, 08:58:41 PM
My favorite use-case that I hope can be widely implemented is that of storing a public key fingerprint in the Namecoin system. This is how you can kill off the CA system and still be secure.

Shit what? That's some heavy foam right there.

Don't forget the 350 Mhash/s CPU.

I didn't really read that as making it not possible to transfer between users, but that could be the case. Still awaiting more info.
1915  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs - Bitforce Single and Mini Rig Box on: June 08, 2012, 08:11:49 PM
17 cards at 1.5GH/s, right? Are these improved versions going to be in rev4 of the Single?
As far as I know, BFL doesn't plan to offer those cards as Singles.
1916  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Security consensus question on: June 08, 2012, 07:10:12 PM
Perhaps along with requiring a payout lock address be set prior to 2FA auth being enabled, you could code up some kind of validation utility that would validate a message signed by the payout lock address? In that case, the message could be something that is sent as part of an email reset.
1917  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Security consensus question on: June 08, 2012, 06:47:03 PM
<Ukto> theres a simple answer
<Ukto> you should post it back for me
<Ukto> create a custom Q&A db for people to set, and they can use that as a 3rd peice of info.  can also use gpg keys

1919  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Security consensus question on: June 08, 2012, 06:39:24 PM
Require that payout lock be activated before 2FA is activated, and then you can send the remaining funds to that address and delete the account if there is a problem.

This might be annoying if someone wanted to keep their stats and workers, so maybe there could be a way to export the current config and/or stats and re-import to a new account maybe.
1920  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Show me the money on: June 08, 2012, 06:31:54 PM
Code:
$ ./bitcoind verifymessage 1Fu5GtJDMTBi56c3fYZA3tre8tZGNd36FH G80KGnVXPYzB/mIlfsJUWRnGiLJF8Gz08NCjQAzhgq12i/ZNpvFtSZw3sWzZx+jjETmZRm7F81iD9xVS9Dh8qLA= "I control this."

true

As you may have guessed, the format is bitcoind <bitcoinaddress> <signature> <message>
Response "true" means it is valid, and "false" means it is not valid.
