I wonder how short the coal is china.

Couldn't really find an exact figure, however this article >https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202110/1235752.shtml reads;

Quote
In order to meet local demand, the State Grid Heilongjiang Hongxinglong Electric Power Bureau has increased electricity supply from Russia. From October 1, the bureau increased the operation time of the Heihe converter station that connects power transmission from Amur, Russia, and Heihe, Heilongjiang Province, from 5 hours to 16 hours a day.

So it seems like the shortage is serious and the demand is pretty serious, also according to Reuters Coal imports in China increased by 76% this year compared to the last year, also given the fact that the rainy season in China is over -- it impacts power supply by a good margin.
2042  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S17+ 70/73 some basic questions. on: October 18, 2021, 11:03:26 PM
In theory if you lose 1 line the miner should simply shut down but I would not bet on that happening before the PSU is damaged...

I have nowhere near the experience you do when it comes to electricity and all that, but I think that this will work just fine, I "unintentionally" had a few miners hooked up this way and nothing went wrong, in fact, the moment the PSU loses one of the two inputs it will instantly shutdown, it will only keep the PSU fan spinning if the other input is plugged in.

I believe as long as the input voltage is the same (which should be in OP's case) it should work just fine.

I think the APW9 PSU is just two independent PSUs combined, however, since this is your field, check it out https://www.zeusbtc.com/manuals/repair-guide/Antminer-APW9-power-supply-repair-guide.pdf, you might be able to confirm if there is an actual risk supplying it from two different circuits.

Hoping this is not deleted as it was about chips as it relates to BTC chips and lack of them which means no gear for sale or sell a few at stupid high prices.
To date nothing has been deleted from this thread. My thanks to all who never pushed the boundaries too hard  Smiley

The goods shortages is not all due to chip shortages. In fact, the various Foundries are almost back up to speed across all nodes. For quite a while now the major blockage has been shipping delays and the lack of containers & ground based transport. ref the Great Pacific Parking Lot stories and this one from a shipping news organization

That, plus

Shortages of domestic coal have driven fuel prices for Chinese power generators higher, causing the unprofitable companies to ration power to industrial users. That has forced some factories in the world's largest economy to suspend production, disrupting global supply chains.
https://www.reuters.com/world/china/chinas-power-woes-may-worsen-demand-surges-amid-coal-supply-lag-2021-10-18/

Chinese manufacturers have been asked to reduce their power consumption, almost everything has slowed down in China, People are working fewer hours now than they did back then, Coal prices went up from like $55 a year ago to nearly 250$ a few days ago, it now sits at a massive $237,  I believe this affects every country in the world since Gas and Oil prices have also been climbing, this is all nothing but good news as far as the difficulty is concerned.

Speaking of prices, what is everybody's plan if the power company decides to increase power prices? where I live, that isn't doable by any stretch of the imagination, which is a relief.
2044  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2021, time for a new general & diff speculation thread... on: October 17, 2021, 10:29:19 PM
they simply shift from eth to btc to ltc/doge. using the excess gear.

Ok, your theory now is more solid than before after you have explained it a bit further, one missing point which I'd like to know. Are you suggesting:

1- They run the most profitable gear at any given time regardless of everything else.

or

2- They try to suppress the difficulty regardless of point no.1?

2045  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: T17/S17 malfunction: cases, solutions, remedies, RMA history on: October 17, 2021, 08:54:21 PM
Whoah, so running a big farm like that easily becomes your full time job if you can also do repairing yourself

I think the type of mining gears running at the farm will determine whether this becomes feasible or not, if the farm is full of 17 series gears, well, then probably a dozen technicians can do that full-time, if it's other robust gears, the amount of work needed could be extremely low.

If I charged enough to make it worth my time I'd be even more expensive than the overpriced services already listed...

Makes sense.

No, unfortunately not. I guess it could be the soldier or a burnt chip, although, could there be a log of "find 30 asic" even with a burnt chip? Seems kinda contradictory.

If the chips are burnt then they are burnt, the kernel log won't show 30 asics at times and 0 in the others, however, if it's just a bad solder connection then it's pretty normal for the hash board to show 30 asics and then maybe 24 and then 0, I personally managed to fix a few hash boards by freezing them in the freezer, the freezing did something to that solder joint and fixed it, so ya, it's pretty normal for that to happen.
2046  Local / إستفسارات و أسئلة المبتدئين / Re: فخ منصة Binance ! on: October 17, 2021, 12:13:24 AM

Welcome back man, you went missing for quite a while, by the way, if you are interested, I could add your name here > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5297994.0, you are the most experienced member in fixing these hash boards, trusted and can probably do better than most of those overpriced services listed, check it out and let me know.

I have an issue with my T17, one just 1 hashboard. Sometimes i get 0 asic found sometimes it finds all 30. But in any case, I get the error for all temp sensors on the board. I think I've went through most of the posts here and it most likely resembles the issue I quoted below. As I could see, most likely its loose heatsink, but after my (inexperienced) inspection, none seems loose when tested with mild pressure.

It's more like a bad chip connection than just a loose heatsink, in fact, if the heatsink isn't shorting anything, the miner will still run for a very short while before showing "Over-Temp", but getting the temp sensors errors is probably because of a dead/burnt chip or a bad connection between one of the chip and PCB.

This problem could also be caused by a bad PSU, do you have another PSU to test with?
2048  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2021, time for a new general & diff speculation thread... on: October 16, 2021, 09:08:58 PM
While I may not have this quite right, I think Phil's point is that Bitmain can and will shift what kind of coins it mines (e.g. Etherium versus Bitcoin) to fit within a fixed power budget. If I am understanding and stating it correctly, they might well shut down profitable BTC miners if there is MORE profit in using the electricity to mine Etherium as an example.

If bitmain has that many gears sitting on the sideline they could just sell it, to be able to have any considerable impact on difficulty, we are talking EHs worth of power, which means thousands of mining gears, the question remains, why wouldn't they just sell those miners instead of having them sit on the shelf for some period of time? after all, these gears are so expensive and they hardly ROI in a year running 24/7, having to shut them down every now and then only extends the ROI period.

The second problem is, does Bitmain really have any mining gears online? unless they have mining farms outside of China the once in China probably went offline, Bitmain won't risk mining in the dark, I know they have partnered with Enegix in Kazakhstan in a 100+ MW facility, but being just a partner, I don't think they will operate in this style, I could be wrong tho, nobody really knows.

Also, as everyone knows, Bitcoin has been outperforming all other minable coins the past 2 weeks, if anything, miners would want to be mining Bitmain not the other coins since the profitability of the other coins hasn't gone up as Bitcoin did recently.
2049  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2021, time for a new general & diff speculation thread... on: October 16, 2021, 02:21:00 AM
Simply based on the idea a big player (bitmain) can mine just like that

That's an interesting theory, however, I don't think the math checks out for anyone to do so, I could see miners putting a timestamp into the future to try and "exploit" the difficulty, but given the "MAX_FUTURE_BLOCK_TIME" rule -- they are limited to a maximum of 2 hours/2weeks which is roughly 0.6% assuming all miners are doing the same thing.

But shutting down profitable miners just for the sake of trying to keep the difficulty low isn't something I see them do, after all, Bitmain can sell the bitcoin they mine today for 62k, nobody knows if they can sell it for the same price in the next epoch.
2050  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 Hashing board questions on: October 15, 2021, 03:25:25 PM
Thanks for your reply i will do that, but i put a working hashboard and keep doing reboots. Any idea why is this happening?

Was there any other hash boards attached during the test? Did you try a different ribbon cable?

If it was only one board and you tried different ribbon cables then it could be a PSU issue, try using a different PSU.

You should also try to flash a different firmware, try the multi-option firmware by bitmain.
2051  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2021, time for a new general & diff speculation thread... on: October 15, 2021, 06:59:06 AM
.I guess if anyone looks at the other pool changes it might show where they left from.
Its likely poolin, i think I remember they had over 22EH a week ago or so, thier 3 days average shows 6EH and 24h averages shows 4EH.

Its unlikely that those many miners left the pool in 3 days, maybe they are using a new node and blocktemplate that does not show thier name for whatever reason given the Chinese drama?
2052  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Where to fix your Asic miners. on: October 14, 2021, 11:15:03 PM
I saw some people talking about zeusbtc but I'm not sure if they are legit.

Zeusbtc is as legit as any mining-related company can be, but all the repair centers outside of China are not owned by them, in fact, they don't even know if those repair centers are actually legit, if you can provide enough evidence that you can repair hash boards they will add you to the list, so while all those repair centers have gone thought at least a minor check before making it to the list -- there is no guarantee that they are legit or can actually fix your dashboard.

With that said, if you have no other option, you might as well just take the risk.
2053  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S9 Hashing board questions on: October 14, 2021, 09:33:04 PM
Thanks for your suggestion . I will try this, it's kind strange cause even with a working hashboard on slot 3 doing reboots still. What firmware you suggest?

The best way to troubleshoot this would be to leave the bad board plugged in a different slot using a different ribbon/data cable while unplugging the other two, if the problem persists then you have a bad hash board which is likely the case, if it isn't, then we can troubleshoot further, however, given the kernel logs you posted I can't help but think it's just a bad hash board.

pool fees are refunded (not sure how this works)

I believe this is only true if you mine on Slushpool.

allows you to mine to several pools simultaneously

Really? how? do you mean you can split the hashrate between two different mining pools?

i have 50k in orders due in nov.

hoping to see them show up.

I am surprised you have taken such a risk knowing the circumstances, I really hope you get all yours in time.

Meanwhile, we went up a bit from -3% to -0.09%, of course, we don't what is causing this, but it's still looking good nonetheless.

Try to contact the seller you bought it from, if I remember correctly, I saw one guy on Aliepxress mention sharing the SD files via email for those that buy the tool, many folks have the files, I am surprised why isn't public and easily accessible yet.
2057  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2021, time for a new general & diff speculation thread... on: October 08, 2021, 09:22:52 PM
Hmm, why are they going after internet traffic and not checking power usages?
Flat power use with no gaps at night would be a clear indicator of continuous mining

They probably are doing that, but then miners could shut down at night, also, maybe there are some factories that operate 24/7 which miners can use to hide their mining operations.

This is google translate of course but...

It has been monitored that the export traffic of mining pools in our province carrying out virtual currency activities reached 136.77 Mbps, and the total number of Internet IP addresses participating in "mining" is 4502.

4502 IP addresses could be 4502 mining farms with a dozen miners in each, not sure how they got to this

LOL, my hope has been for small difficulty spikes of below 5%, honestly with prices where they are you wouldn't expect the difficulty to drop unless some serious hashrate is leaving, and that is most likely coming from China.
2058  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 2021, time for a new general & diff speculation thread... on: October 08, 2021, 03:15:58 PM
I wonder if the illegal mine got busted or if they turn it on and off.

It looks like it, read this link https://jsca.miit.gov.cn/xwdt/gzdt/art/2021/art_97125dc430264d4c82f42713a2eea23b.html

It seems like the Chinese government is getting more serious about banning bitcoin mining, they are tracking internet traffic to try and spot where large operations are happening.

This will likely scare some illegal miners off, the harder the government tries to find them the less risk they will take, but will that be offset by migrated and new gears? Time will tell.

One t17+ not run correctly. One of 2 plug power cable don't change anything.when i put the Another plug cable t17+ run all fan run but at low speed like if i plug just one cable. It's not a wrong installation electric. I try Another cable, i Switch to put on other electrical outlet, Always the same issue. I think i'ts PSU dead. What did you think? PSU dead?

Try to replace the PSU fans, if that does not fix it, then well, you got a dead PSU.

Bitmain is out if stock to apw9+ i want try to buy on Alibaba or Aliexpress or eBay but my french customer of t17+ said to me only buy bitmain.com i look review to Guy buy aliba or Aliexpress or eBay the PSU went not already New.

Check with @gracezhou1993 on telegram, she usually has them in stock, however, the price will likely be in the 200-300$ range which is of course more expensive than buying directly from Bitmain, also as of this week, Chinese vendors started to charge 5% on all crypto payments, the prices they list is usually in USD (bank transfer, WU, and whatnot).

And we went negative

It won't last. Sad

Quote
Something wrong with some miners at F2Pool?

That's quite a drop, but probably a combination of luck and miners going offline, I am in their telegram group which is pretty active, I checked and nobody seems to have any issue with the pool itself.

BitFury is one entity that is not representative of the network as a whole. The same is true for any other individual miner.

He is cherry-picking stuff to support his claim, he mentioned Bitfury mining farms which are probably closed by now, and he ignored companies like (Marathon Digital,Core Scientific, Blockfi, DMG, Riot, and many more mining farms that are located in the U.S, these companies alone probably have 25EH and it's growing, the public data for these companies bulk orders from Bitmain and the other major mining manufactures show roughly 50EH ( probably half runs now based on a rough estmiate).

So if anything, Cambridge's study was unfair to the mining share of the U.S since most of those large guys have their own mining pools.

Quote
In terms of the number of blocks found in any given difficulty period, those pools are statically significant to all blocks found.
It is very unusual to survey an entire population to find out authoritative information about a population.

The last study put China first and the U.S second, 1/3 is more than enough sample size, with the Ban in China we say 40-50% drop in the total hashrat, which suggests that the majority of the hashrate in China went offline (unless someone thinks that banning bitcoin mining in China will cause miners in the U.S to shutdown), so without a doubt right now the U.S is the largest mining hub.
