1181  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining Facility container or hangar / Staff / Monitoring questions on: February 12, 2023, 01:11:13 PM
To run a 2MW you are going to need a lot of money, the infrastructure alone will need at least 150-200k per megawatt, and you will need to hire a professional to set up the network security aspect of the farm.

As for the permanent staff, you will need at least 2 trusted folks to take care of the farm, they will need to have a general knowledge about electricity, IT and know how to use screwdrivers.

If you don't have the time to manage the farm, you will also need to hire someone for that task as well, whoever person you hire to work at the farm will only change a bad PSU, replace a couple of miners' fans, change the filters and that's it, but when a breaker is down, or one large exhaust fan is broken, they will need to report that to the manager, the manager needs to call someone to handle that.

You can save up on the cost if you would build everything yourself, but I tell you this based on personal experience, once you go past 100-200kw you are going to have a rough time dealing with airflow/heat, and you will understand after it's too late that the initial design of your farm was actually wrong, and you will need to rebuild many things, so just take a short cut and buy the ready to install mining containers even if they were 2x more expensive than setting up your own.

alternatively, you can just sell your power to someone who has enough money, experience, and staff to run the farm, you can probably sell it for 3 cents and make 30k a month doing exactly nothing.

We can't suggest if we don't know exactly what they look like.
Why not swap the power from your 2 first and 2nd rows to the 3rd and 4th rows since you said the company sometimes cuts the power? That's what I think would be the best option depending on their position or having an extra exhaust might work to bring the hot air out.

I think I can answer your question, in a 3-phase system, there is a limited amount of amps on which you can draw on each phase, you can't just move the load from L1 to L2 and expect everything to work unless the wirings are oversized, and by oversized, I mean doubled, it's also pretty damn stupid for the power company to cut just one phase at a time, it puts extreme pressure on their transformers, every transformer I saw is protected by a phase failure relay which will shut down the low end of the transformer when one of the phases is absent.

With that said you have two options:

1- Split the cold/hot side of the miner using a split room design, so you have a cold aisle and a hot one, you can use sheet metal, MDF or foam board, this will prevent hot air from entering the cold side as it will have to pass through the heatsinks of the "OFF miners".

2-Create a negative pressure zone on the exhaust side by adding an exhaust fan attached to the wall which faces the miners' exhaust fans, air moves from positive to negative, so even 2 rows off, the air will still go from the cold side to the hot side.

It was a drop of 0.49%, the hashrate picked up in the last couple of days, the average block time for the last 3 days was 9.2 minutes, it seems like the price increase from 16-18k to 22-24k brought some people back to business.

it's also clear looking at asic prices and watching the resellers' stock, gear prices went up, and demand went pretty high, not sure if it's the 2-4k increase itself or the FOMO, I believe it's the latter, seems like some people are trying to rush before the market hits the sky and BTC goes to the moon, since the price increase, we had one positive adjustment, this one is almost flat, the next will likely be a slight positive if price stays the same.

normal' and 2950 watts = fail
'normal' and 2900 watts = fail

Where does it fail when you set these numbers?

Also, looking at the tank you posted it says 12kw cooling capacity, no mention of the 6kw, which means it can safely run two MicroBT even overclocked, unless I am missing something.
1186  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Octotank12 with 2 whatsminer 30s+ review. Not ready for full review. on: February 11, 2023, 09:59:32 PM
Okay this below is 'normal' with a 3050 watt cap

Yes, you want to keep the power mode on normal when setting a power limit on the miner, it's almost impossible to bring the miner to an exact figure, so your 3050w limit will usually be slightly less, a few watts here and there, also, the power consumption on the tool isn't 100% accurate, so make sure you use a wattmeter to get the exact correct number.

I would also look for a different tank, 6kw is too much for Antminer and a bit on the low side for 2*Whatsminer, but at the end of the day, the lower you go on these Whatsminer the more efficiency you gain overall.

Also if the project kicks in and you want to sell the package as a 200th miner you would want to get the M50, they range between 25w/th to 28w/th, the lower the more expensive of course.

The M50s 110th 28W would be a good pick, it should do 110th at 3080w default, so if you want it to stay at 2900w (to not go above 5800w for the tank) it will do 103th or a total of 206th for the tank.

Meanwhile, keep in mind that you will remove fans in the tank, the reading on the wattmeter will take the fan readings too, the fans in the pics you posted are running close to full, they consume about 85w each at full speed (7k rpm), so the reading on Whatsminer tool will be a lot more accurate when the miners run in the tank.

1187  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Octotank12 with 2 whatsminer 30s+ review. Not ready for full review. on: February 11, 2023, 04:57:12 PM
Keep in mind the low power mode will tune every miner differently, also, inside the tank temps will be a lot lower and thus the tuning might go higher because it does use temp as a measure of how low/high the frequency goes.

Long story short, using the power limit is safer when you really want an exact watt per miner.
1188  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Octotank12 with 2 whatsminer 30s+ review. Not ready for full review. on: February 09, 2023, 11:38:10 PM

First one is powered up on normal. 96 th as you can see the middle board is a bit low.

but not running for a long time. I will give it a 3 hour run on normal then test low and high speeds.

My thanks to mikeywith for helping me to get this

Glad they arrived, you can not test the high with air cooling, low will work fine and cool, also you can download whatsminer tools and set power limit for each miner, like 3000w it runs a lot cooler with reduced hashrate.

So very likely a drop of about 3%, this will kind of offset the last diff increase of 4.6%, as for the price, it seems to have hit a wall at 24k and we are stuck below that, for those who still want to buy coins or mining gears and have the cash to spend, it would be great to see another drop below 20k, that will make buying mining gears a lot easier.

Grin

1192  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [∞ YH] solo.ckpool.org 2% fee solo mining 268 blocks solved! on: February 06, 2023, 09:37:05 AM
You have way more to lose if something goes south in the new project.

I think the update would only require a change in the payout system and would have no affect on the process of finding and submitting blocks. Just a matter of how you distribute the block rewards based on the % set by each user.

This would benefit those who own large gears like sub 100th, they do not want to gamble with it all, so maybe half for pplns to pay the power bill and the other half for solo mining, while it is very unlikely for me to use the split function I can see many people appreciating the change.

1194  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [∞ YH] solo.ckpool.org 2% fee solo mining 268 blocks solved! on: February 05, 2023, 08:54:16 PM
No firm plans at this stage, but I've been offered a commission to design and build out a new pool with multiple nodes, originally with the 50% solo idea, but then I came up with the idea of making it configurable. Even if it were to replace this pool, solo mining would be entirely possible by specifying 100%. Separate ports could be set up to specify different defaults if it's not feasible or easy to use the password field.

The idea sounds interesting, personally, I don't see myself using it, but I am sure many others would.

I think it would be best to leave the default current port and password "x" for entirely solo mining (aka 100% solo) for the reasons below.

1- Some people who have gears pointed to solo mine on ckpool and do not follow this thread, Twitter, or anywhere else where they would know about the change.

2- Changing The miners that are currently set up would be a pain in the ***, personally,  I have set up ckpool with a default password on a few hundred gears as a secondary/backup pool, and have done this for probably 6-7 clients who said they want to try for solo when their main pool is down, it would be a lot of unnecessary work to reach out to all of them again.

Of course, doesn't take too much to realize that my suggestion is biased as hell, but I still think it makes sense. Cheesy

I have been solo mining with a single S9 for the last 2 weeks and I figured I would have more chances by joining forces with someone and split the reward fairly rather than mining alone.

I do realize there has to be a lot of trust involved but what the heck? I'm willing to take that chance, would anybody be interested?

It's not worth the risk and the effort, if I join you with a single S9, our chances will double, but it's still 1 in 8 million chance as opposed to 1 to 16 million, on the grand scheme of things, that's nothing compared to the risk you have to take, you could also get scammed by the end of the day.

The mentioned mine uses 90% "clean" energy, so it does not seem to be carbon emission issue, seems like DaveF is correct, they just want to kick these guys away in order to build other things.

1200  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is it wrong to try your luck with Solo on: January 29, 2023, 11:44:27 PM
I don't really believe in "free electricity": someone pays for it. And if they notice a continuous 3000W going to your place, they may not like it.

If you walk into a coffee shop and they don't charge you for the cup of coffee you drink then it's free as far as you are concerned, just because someone else pays for it doesn't change the fact, the same thing is true if you are forced by the law to walk into that coffee shop and pay 1$ per entry whether or not you drink the coffee or not.

In many places around the world,  essentials like electricity are subsidized by the government, yes the government is using your money to subsidize the electricity, but you can't ask them to give you that money in cash or give you apples instead.

Even in some "modernized" countries where power is not subsidized, some people pay for fixed contracts, say the minimum is 1000kWh and your house uses only half of that, you can't just buy 500kWh, so you are forced to get 1000kWh, the otherwise wasted 500kWh falls safely under the term "free".

OP, no hashrate is ever enough for solo mining, just like no amount of money is enough to buy you enough lottery tickets to guarantee a win ( unless you buy all the tickets which don't make you win anything anyway).

With 110Th and assuming both price and difficulty will not change, you can easily earn $250 a month mining to a PPS/PPLNS pool, in 10-12 months you will ROI the mining gear and enjoy a stable almost guaranteed income of $250, makes a lot more sense than solo mining, if you insist on trying your luck, go ahead, you might as well just hit a block, but you need to be aware of the fact that it's extremely unlikely for that to happen, you need to be freaking lucky to hit a block with that hashrate.
