2101  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How do you get free power? on: November 29, 2015, 04:46:46 AM
Solar is pretty lame. I probably generate 5kw a day on my system, which a 1kw farm can chew up in 5 hours. Helps a bit but you have to consider you could have sold that power back to the utility.

The way to go is micro-hydro. Really, find a stream on your property, install a 1,000 watt alternator/peltier turbine and you're in business 24*7*forever. Now for a real win, finding an abandoned dam and installing a turbine, miners (hey, all that water is FREE COOLING!) and a cell phone for internet and you're all set......

Yes, of course, let me find a stream in my backyard;

*roll eyes* Tongue

But yeah it is actually much better than pretty much anything else on several factor and is why electricity is so cheap here.

Sooooo ... after two months ... no Y cables and got refunds ... anyone have a place where I can get them for real ?

I had a virtually identical experience with the Ebay China vendor for Y-cables. Two months of no news, finally a week after the maximum delivery date, and then they refunded promptly. Lost two months, and no money. I would rather pay a little more and actually receive a product.

Also going to put in a couple of Terahash hours for the cause this evening. Hoping for a block!

I bought from this guy;
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/221661361513

And i received them, not quick at all but within limit which was ~ 1 month.
2103  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin QT not synching on: November 28, 2015, 10:21:02 PM
Hi guys.  Apologies if this is repetitive but I've gone through the relevant thrads I could find and haven't been able to find a solution.  Your help is appreciated.

I bought some coins and have been unable to view them in my wallet due to  Bitcoin QT never successfully loading the blockchain despite countless attempts over the last three weeks.  I'm brand new to BTC so know nothing technical about it other than what I've tried so far.  I'm running windows 7 starter, 2.0GHz with about 57Gb hard drive space:

1. https://blockchain.info/it/wallet/import-wallet Tried dragging wallet.dat file here based on my reading of an old thread on here but 'unexpected end of file' or some such error repeatedly comes up
2. Tried deleting blockchain and all other files (except wallet.dat) numerous times.  Seems to continually stick at either 2 years 26 weeks or 1 year 51 weeks.  Restarts involve QT reindexing the downloaded files due to them being 'corrupted'
3. Have run extended memory checks on my PC and memory is fine

Thank you for any suggestions for the simplest solution to a. checking that the coins I bought are safe, and b. having a useable wallet

A bit, you're mostly in the same situation of that thread just under yours;
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=122198.0

Also i'm not sure you actually have enough space. I dont know if it need to unpack and need some swap file space but the block chain size is about 50gb by itself now. And the process of syncing can take many days of uninterrupted work.

So go ahead and check that thread, it contain a work around, one you might not even need to go through by just getting a SPV wallet, unless you also went and sent money to one of your addresses without syncing first.

TLDR: Get a SPV Wallet.
2104  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3+ Discussion and Support Thread on: November 28, 2015, 03:16:25 PM
I used to own Antminer S3 and I still think it is one of the best miner out there

I agree with this. The S3 was the pinnacle of design from Bitmain. Everything since hashes more, but seems to be put together without much thought. If they re-designed the S8 as an S7 with the ease of use and sound profile of the S3s they'd have a blockbuster miner.

Yeah a two blade S7 with the enclosure and fans with a lower minimum RPM, we'd be in S1/S3 territory. Also one thing that's putting me off from S7 at the moment is the way the heatsink are holding in place...

They're not bolted or anything so they can fall if the thermal compound heat. Or sometimes they get lose after getting a little kick.

I kind of wish we could go back to the S3 thermal level, except we'd be getting 1400-1700GH/s out of the cute little quiet thing. And no need to plug in 10 fucking pci-e port per miner either.

That last one make it feel like a cash grab, inciting people to buy their PSU, instead of existing options.
2105  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: News of a mini RasPi for 5$ How could this change bitcoin mining? on: November 28, 2015, 03:12:26 PM
Why couldn't you use a cheap adapter like this: http://amzn.com/B00AKXE59E  for ethernet? If purchased in bulk for hardware application, surely you could get pricing <$1.

I wonder if there is a mini HDMI-to-USB adapter (if that is even possible). HDMI port is useless for mining, otherwise.
AS far as micro usb to Ethernet-it does not make much sense to me because there are only two micro USB ports there with one dedicated to Power as far as I understand (maybe it cannot do data?), which leaves just one micro USB available for data. I assume you would want to connect micro USB (m) to USB (f) adapter there, then hook up a usb hub, THEN connect a usb to ethernet adapter to that hub. I am not sure that this concoction would work, but it might, however all these adapters would reduce the appeal (since raspberry pi B+ could be had for $19.99 with all connectors already present). However, that tiny thing looks appealing just for trying it out.

I think this is dead-on.

$5 for the RPI-0 (currently sold out)
$5 for a cheap OTG micro USB (m) to USB (f) adapter with at least 2 USB ports
$5 for a cheap USB-ethernet or $10 for a USB-wifi adapter

you are looking at $15-20 total. not too bad, but it brings the cost closer to simply buying far-superior RPI 2 for ~$50

How about 5$ for the RPI-0.
0.25$ for the components to solder an Ethernet port on? (Assuming its possible)
or
2$ for a USB-wifi adapter (ebay, from china)

A USB-hub you have or will need anyways, whether you use one or the other?

I still see a 43$ difference.

I'm not sure why you need a 1->2 ports adapter if you get a Hub anyways?
2106  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: S3 problem on: November 28, 2015, 03:06:21 PM
I do actually have 3KW solar array which, even with the S3 running 24/7, still manages to fully charge my battery bank daily when the sun is shining which is most days here in the Algarve. So, I am not paying the electric company as such but just recovering some of the initial solar investment I made 3 years ago plus I might end up with a bitcoin or two by the time the difficulty doubles again I believe middle of next year. I turn the unit off on cloudy days to divert max energy to battery charging. Once the warmer weather returns in March I will put the S3 back in my workshop don't need the added heat in my room then.

And you're making use of the heat, thats pretty nice. How much do the solar array and the battery bank cost? And hold long does the battery bank last?

For your second question, no, there are some wallet you can import the privkey to, but HD wallets work differently. If you had setup Multibit HD first, it would have taken few minutes to fully sync, probably.

which wallets would I be able to import my key to? and will the btc show up as soon as it's done syncing automatically?

thank you for the informative response!
Electrum, multibit does not use the same backup format, hence you can't import using wallet.dat. CMIIW, I never import wallet.dat into electrum or multibit directly successfully. You have to go to help>debug window>console. If you have a password, enter this:
Code:
walletpassphrase [password here] 600
then to extract it, use
Code:
dumpprivkey [address here]
. But Shorena has advised me to avoid touching the private key unless nessasary. I would keep a backup of the wallet.dat first before doing anything.

For Electrum, you can choose to import or sweep. Importing means that your address will be included in the wallet the seed cannot restore it. Hence, you need to keep a seperate backup. Change are also sent back to the origin address. Sweep means that your balance would be sent into one of the address generated from seed.

You can try see if the export file/wallet.dat can be imported to Multibit HD but according to the guide its not possible;
https://multibit.org/en/help/v0.5/help_importingPrivateKeys.html

I think some people reported doing this with Electrum. But i am not sure and i have not tried that wallet.
Multibit no longer supports the importing of private keys. I suggest that you use Electrum.

Multibit Classic? I have always used it. Just need to add the private key in the .key file.

Sound good, have not touched Classic in a long time.

So just one more thing to add to that.

If you have to expose your priv key, no problem, just send yourself the BTC to a address generated by Multibit HD or whatever and never use the old address again. That should be secure.

You can import it to any wallet your want, although I suggest choosing one listed on bitcoin.org.

The balance will update once the syncing is finished, you just need to wait

Nope, some wallet use different ways of generating the keys so its not omni compatible.

Really a newbie here, this is my first attempt at buying bitcoin! I decided to go through coinbase and purchased around .07 btc, I waited the 7 days, and when I received the btc I attempted to 'send' it to bitcoin qt.

it's been about six hours, and I have not yet received my btc in bitcoin-qt client. in coinbase it says the transaction was completed, and can be verified with blockchain(coinbase adress - btc, recieving adress + btc, but I can't access the coins!)

the address I sent the coins to on coinbase is definitely one of my receiving addresses in bitcoin-qt

additional info/questions:

bitcoin-qt client has not finished syncing with network, when it does will I receive my coins?
can I use the wallet.dat file from bitcoin-qt with another software like multibit HD? will doing this help me get my btc faster?

You answered your own question. Your wallet is not sync'ed. It need to be fully sync'ed.

I was thinking of getting into mining and wanted to know whether or not I should start messing with ALTCoins before I put big money into BTC to try to make some money.  Please give me your thoughts.

No, go for BTC ASIC if you want to get into it. If you want to get your bearing, get a small miner. Either a S1 if you have cheap electricity or a Sidehack usb stick if you do not.

What is your electricity costs?

2114  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: ASIC MINING - Newest hardware and the future on: November 28, 2015, 12:46:12 AM
No game-changing ASIC out yet? Sad

What do you mean. The existing mining setup already work well and if anything super efficient came out, it would take no time at all for it to become the norm and no game changing would really be done.

It always depend on what your electricity cost is. That wont change.
2115  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3+ Discussion and Support Thread on: November 28, 2015, 12:36:16 AM
Has any one thought of combining a couple of s3's together sort of like the C1 but not changing over the heat sink. I mean Sort of like how the s5 is done. Would it be worth it? I mean have one controller controlling all 3 s3 instead of three separate units?
Yep, I have done some testing with these. Original S3-controller was propably meant to control more than two boards. It's schematics show connections for 4 hashboards. But problem is that firmware has support only for 2 hashboards. In hw-level I can read code from pic-mcu and reprogram it, but changing that code would need assembler coding. It's propably easier to write new code to do that. But coding isn't one of my best skills. Open-wrt module's software is also capable to update that pic's code so it might be possible to tweak it's drivers. But again,it's beyond my knowledge.
There might also be a reason why they dropped that pic/ar9331 controller out: it has only 2 physical uart's. Some of pins can be programmed for uarts but I'm not sure if that pic is fast enough for it. Some wiser men have told me that it works if the baudrate is low enough. But I really don't know, I'm just a hobbyist.
Ofcourse it can be done with usb/uart adapters like cp2102. You only need to do level shifting too and provide 1v8 and 3v3 to hashboards. It works, I have tested it, but every hashboard needs its own cp2102 adapter. I might try to build an adapter with cp2108 in it. So it could drive 4 boards with one usb connection. And it should have some pwm-controller for fans too.
I think it's all very interesting as an exploration and design exercise, but for most of us the S3, great miner that it is, is well past it's sell by date. Minor changes to efficiency through having a single controller are not going to change anything. So I think it's better to put effort into anything that would improve an S5, as for me anyway even that only lives up until the halving.
I haven't run any S3 units for a while now for that very reason, but I don't think anyone will argue that the more recent generation of Ants (S5, S5+, S7) have become less 'friendly' to home mining if only for the sole reason that they are LOUD. The S3 is whisper quiet compared to the later generations.

The S3/S3+ is still profitable depending on your local electricity costs, and even more so in the northern hemisphere during the winter months because it offsets heating costs. An S3+ can be found on eBay for under $150USD which still makes it attractive enough in certain conditions. Certainly an S5 will be more efficient, but efficiency isn't the only criteria for everyone.

S3's are cheap, they are quiet, and they will remain profitable during the winter in many regions of the world.

S5's and S7's now have the fan control setting, so i'm running them at the same noise level as the S3. So no problem there. The only irk-ish is that their high performance fan wont go under 2400-2600 RPM so its not possible to make them exactly quiet, but nothing prevent you from getting better ones.
2116  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: News of a mini RasPi for 5$ How could this change bitcoin mining? on: November 27, 2015, 07:41:46 PM

Micro-USB sockets for data and power

From the spec sheet.  Does anyone know if you can set data transmission to run through through the GPIO headers on previous models? Obviously that would be the cheapest solution if used with a dedicated controller board on a miner.

The header can be used to add a Wi-Fi shield. That bumps the cost up to model B prices, hence why use it?

I think the reason would be for fun, or space.   Buying a RPI B/B+ would be easier and they are not expensive.

I do think there are multiple things such as usb to Ethernet you could get cheap and add on to RPI zero.  But one thing to keep in mind is it seems most places with a RPI zero turned it into a kit with cheap accessories.... so you might even be spending more then a RPI B currently.

For most users who just want a turnkey, sure. For people who want to tinker a bit, i think this is great. I'm mostly thinking that it would not be hard for them to make a batch that has a Ethernet port on it. If a company request to buy a batch of 1000+ that come with a Ethernet port then it would not really drive up the price. Then they could be resold at 5-7$ at profit still.
2117  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: I'm planning to buy 50 antminer s3, how to conditionate a room. on: November 27, 2015, 07:37:48 PM
Hello, the s4 that i bought to test mining is about to arrive. Please can someone tell me the steps to follow to star mining?

First creating a wallet. Done in blockchain.info. But when the machine arrives what i will have to do after plug it in to the electricity and plugin in the ethernet cable?

What pool should i join? Which is the cheaper pool fee that i can find? And all that basically. And how the pool will deposit my bitcoin profits to my wallet? I heard some previous post in this thread that i won't need a computer to configure the s4 to the pool or anything is all done in the s4.

Thats what i said. But i meant you don't need a computer to run it, you need any kind of device that has an internet browser, put the miner's ip into your browser and edit its config there. Probably check on your router on your DHCP lease to see which IP it got. Unless the previous owner put a static IP on it. Do a reset if its not already done in the case where you can't find the IP.

Get a real wallet, SPV wallet is good for the end user usage, something like Multibit HD. If you want a web wallet, blockchain is not a good one. If you're in North America, probably Coinbase. Regardless there's a list of wallet on the bitcoin.org website.

Kano has best payout, very irregular payments because its so small. Slush pool if you want more steady payouts, that one has 2% fee. Mining bitcoin.cz. I strongly recommend the later one or some variant. Preferably not a Chinese pool. (Hash distribution preference)

I heard Coinbase can freeze your account. I mean i just need the wallet to hold 1 bitcoin, the moment i have a bitcoin i will exchange it to dollars. I will not hold bitcoins yet.

So in the web browser i put the miner ip, then inside the miner ip configurations i can configure the address of the pool? Then i guess the pool have a website, so i just make an account in the pool website and i will see there all the bitcoins i earned by mining, then the pool website have payouts directly to your wallet. Is that correct?

I heard someone had his BTC frozen and he was being pretty vocal about it, then eventually he found out it was because his bank had not cleared the funds to Coinbase yet. No problem personally. If delays or dealing with a 3rd party is a problem, then get a real wallet as previously mentioned.

Me i just use Coinbase for BTC <-> Bank. I don't store BTC there either, but they do have a Vault feature and they are insured.

Yes. Put IP in browser, you'll connect to its Open WRT OS with all the tabs and data.

Yes, pool where you do no need to register, you will put your Wallet Address you want the payout sent to as a username. For Slush pool, you register, then can set a payout address. Same for Kano.

You should probably register now so you can familiarize yourself. And properly managing your miners by setting up worker monitoring is a godsend when you have multiple miners.

Thanks for the replies and suggestions I tried the new firmware with and without old settings but still the same issue. I found a nice chap from Finland on Ebay who sold me a replacement control board for 50 dollars not the same as original but an adapted S1 control board. S3 works fine now at 250 Frequency it's pulling 420W at the plug and mining just over 500 GH/S with no X's and very low errors (0.01%) Nice little 400W heater in my bedsit so far no need for extra heater it's been down to 5 C outside but remains 23-25 C in the room.

Bitmain support was non-existent despite several emails asking for spares.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201460056095?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Hope this helps someone else with a problem board I have read it is possible to recover the board corruption using an adapter & software but this would be beyond my scope.

Sorry that you had to go this way. Sound like an expensive replacement, when you consider thats half of what a S3 go for at the moment. You might be able to sell the controller to someone who has some TTL adapter or whatever tools they need to try to unbrick it. If thats even the problem.

You don't. Or you head over to the altcoin section. There's not many opportunities to mine profitably with GPUs. There are some, however.
