I got Brazil vs Spain in the final, and Brazil is my favorite so...I have high expectations, Brazil looks pretty solid, great manager, great players, probably the strongest Brazil squad in the last 10 years, maybe more...and I can't wait to see Neymar 100% fit in this WC (probably in the knockout stages), it's going to be amazing.
Neymar? And the others! Firminho & Coutinho can't be underestimated either. They've got solid goalkeeping options in Ederson, and Allison. They've just got a solid team, and in the friendlies they are looking good.

I actually don't fancy Germany on paper this year, but you just can't not include them in the finals, because of their record of just making it happen even with sub par players in certain positions.
5242  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 51% attacks on: June 12, 2018, 09:48:17 PM
so attacker can steal other currencies and then buy with them bitcoins...
That's not how majority attacks work. You can't steal coins by having the majority of the hashing power on a network. You could double spend, and prevent certain transactions from confirming. The obvious answer to this is it's incredibly difficult to keep such an operation ongoing, and online 24/7. Plus, at the end of the day is it really work the expense to prevent certain things from happening?

The only reason I see people attempting majority attacks on a particular coin would be if they were competitors, and they strategically attacked it at the right moment to cause doubt within it's followers. Otherwise, I don't think it's beneficial to anyone.

Having just 51% isn't really a enough either. It would be much more effective the higher percentage of hashing power you have.

I should add I tried mycelium with no luck ,if I have seed does that not mean it’s in cold storage and not on an exchange ?

I'm not sure if any exchanges use mnemonic phrases, however it may be the case. There was a number of exchanges around a few years ago which aren't around anymore. First take a look at the desktop options, and then if that doesn't yield any fruit we can take a look at some of the exchanges that were around back then, and still are.
5244  Other / Meta / Re: Proxy ban ok I get it....But on: June 12, 2018, 05:02:25 PM
A new address is generated per account. So another account which receives a proxy ban will never have that address which was sent to you. It's unique to the account.

It's not matched to IP address due to multiple people could be using the same IP address after all that's the reason why the account received a proxy ban in the first place, because it's a common IP that's previously visited this forum, and been banned etc.
5245  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: got old passphrase and possible pass on: June 12, 2018, 04:56:54 PM
What sort of wallet did you use? If you used a online wallet it's probably going to be Blockchain.info, and hopefully not TradeFortress' edition which I forget the name of.

If you used a Desktop wallet then there's several possibilities which you could've used. Here's the most popular ones:

- Bitcoin Core
- Electrum
- Multibit
- Armory (may not support mnemonic phrases)

You could try your 12 word mnemonic phrase in each one of those until you find the right one. If you don't find it in any of these wallets let us know, and we'll work out which wallet you used. AFAIK most of these wallets use a mnemonic phrase of some sort, however they may vary in length. Blockchain.info also uses mnemonic phrases to my knowledge.

Generally speaking as long as you find the wallet which you used previously, and have your mnemonic phrase dotted down accurately there should be no problem in recovering your funds as long as the private key hasn't been compromised. There's only a limited amount of wallets that you could of used so it shouldn't take long to determine which one it was, and hopefully these names might of hogged your memory a little bit.

The password at this point isn't needed. You have the mnemonic phrase. Do you also have the wallet.dat file?
5246  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 💚💚Know the most helpful self volunteer list for this forum 💚💚 on: June 12, 2018, 04:41:58 PM
I mean you might as well go ahead, and list all the staff members. They are the real Chuck Norris' of this forum karate chopping spam bots right, left, and center.

There's also a list of reporters which report without any gain, and quite frankly don't get the thanks that they deserve. Take the top 5 excluding staff members from here for example. This may be outdated now, but there isn't a newer version available.

Lutpin: 11k good reports
Shorena: 10k good reports
Botany: 4k good reports
xhomerx10: 4k good reports
mexxer-2: 4k good reports (rounded up)

These members likely have thousands more since. If you take a look at that list you'll likely find other members such as Danny Hamilton often giving up his time to spread his knowledge around the forum. I would say there's several others on there that contribute in another way too, and there seems to be a somewhat correlation between reporters, and being helpful. (excluding a few)

Next up we've got several members offering post reviews just like Bill Gator. For example here's a few:
Question Authority
pugman (Offers a self learning sort of thing which is quite interesting, and rewarding those who give informative answers)
5247  Other / Meta / Re: Calling for a moderator why my account banned for no reasons? on: June 12, 2018, 04:25:59 PM
Hello Sir,

Thanks for responding. Newbie or Brand New accounts can't PM

Depending on whether rickbig or mprep have disabled messages from newbies you should be able to send personal messages as a newbie. Here's the PM limits. There's very strict amounts which you can send per day, however you can send them.

If they have indeed disabled messages from newbies then bump this once every 24 hours, and they will see as they both frequent this section.
5248  Other / Meta / Re: Disappearing forum posts on: June 12, 2018, 04:22:26 PM
Expanding on coinlocket$ response;

- You'll receive a message via personal messages if your posts specifically are being deleted by the moderators.
- These aren't always spam megathreads, but could be generally low quality discussions/questions. In this case you won't receive a message via personal messages.

Depending on whether you've received a personal message depends on whether you'll need to alter your posting habits to prevent further action being taken. Generally, I would advise not to contribute to low quality posts, and just report them for such.
5249  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will Bitcoin Go Below 6000 USD? Prop Bet on: June 12, 2018, 04:17:53 PM
I don't normally to this kind of speculation, but I'll add my two cents for anyone willing to take the OP up on their bet.

In my opinion the recent downward trend was directly related a few whales which have been manipulating the market. If you combine this with the predicted stabilization that has been threatening to happen every since Bitcoin hit it's highest value ever then it's certainly not impossible for it to go much lower than 6000. I'm not willing to put my money where my mouth with this one though as I do hate to speculate.

Even though I say that it could go down much lower than 6000 I don't think we'll be seeing that happen. I think a realistic figure would be somewhere around 5000-5500.
5250  Other / Meta / Re: Subforum for account ban request on: June 12, 2018, 04:11:23 PM
Well, technically the message includes an email which you are suppose to send a message too, but some users have claimed they never hear back of it so it could no longer be actively monitored. Instead, of making a new sub forum we could just alter the message which displays when someone has been banned, and ask them to contact the admins via the forums.

A new sub forum for this kind of issue just seems unnecessary.
5251  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk's FIFA World Cup and Premier League Predictor Football Pool on: June 11, 2018, 10:17:25 PM
There was already many discussions about possible winners of World Cup. But guys, in your opinion, which team can surprise us? I expect that Iceland can do something similar what they did in EURO 2016.
I'm not sure about Iceland, but I will admit that I do like their midfield more than anything particularly Sigurdsson as he carried Swansea quite a few times, and I'll never forget what they did to England. Wink

I've personally got my eye on a few teams this time around, but will mostly be looking at the teams that the team I support have signed or are rumored to sign.

Having said that I think there could be a few potential teams that could surprise us, and maybe go a little deeper in the tournament that expected or at least give some of the bigger teams a little trouble. I'm hoping Peru can put in a good performance honestly it's their first World Cup since the 90s? Plus, I've got a little soft spot for Peru as it's a beautiful place.

Senegal I think will throw a few problems in the mixer for their group stages. I'm expecting big performances from Mane, and Koulibaly in particular. I think I remember Mexico's goalkeeper having one hell of a tournament last time, and I'm not sure if he's still playing now, but have found a new respect for them since then. Maybe, Nigeria will perform a little better than they are expected too.

Other than that I think we'll see Spain have a lackluster tournament, and may not even progress. I would expect them to at least get 2nd place, but maybe Morocco can put a spanner in their plans.

However, take my predictions with a pinch of salt because the last time I bet on the last World Cup I lost a few BTC. I actually had a decent accumulator going, and I blame Germany entirely for not scoring earlier...
5252  Other / Meta / Re: Report to moderator? on: June 11, 2018, 08:17:36 PM
Certain members who report a lot may be whitelisted by theymos I believe. White listing basically means your time restrictions for reporting will shortened. Probably to the 4 second limit.

I'm not sure whether he's actively whitelisting those who report a lot or just the ones that make it public that they are annoyed with the time restrictions in place.
5253  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk's FIFA World Cup and Premier League Predictor Football Pool on: June 11, 2018, 07:55:32 PM
Right then let's just go ahead, and embarrass myself with my predictions.

I can't say I'm that excited about the opening game but I'll watch it. Will probably be pretty boring as Saudi Arabia are easily one of the worst teams in the tournament and Russia aren't great either but they do have the home advantage.
I think that's the beauty of the this little betting group though. It will make games more enjoyable that I wouldn't have watched before, and hopefully find some gems are players! Plus, the lower teams competing usually means a more open, and entertaining game..
5254  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Bitcointalk's FIFA World Cup and Premier League Predictor Football Pool on: June 11, 2018, 01:26:17 AM
I have already sent the required amount of BTC to the address for the entry in the World Cup pool, this is getting pretty exciting as the first match of the World Cup will finally begin in just a few days time, I guess it is time to start analyzing some of the matches in the group stage.
Analyze? Just lump on Wales! Oh shit they aren't in the world cup. Bloody hell I think I'm out of my depth here. I'll be routing for any team that rhymes with Bale, Wales or sheep I guess, and possibly those playing in red.

I know I might as well bet on a sportsbook for him but there's no existing lines other than Golden Boot and even I know it's a long shot for the Egyptian to win that without 2 of his Liverpool Tremendous Three with him.
My sources are telling me Egypt, and Brazil will meet up in the final, and Firmino will assist Mo Salah. Although, it should of been flagged offside Mane is in disguise of the linesman, and opted not to raise his flag.
And yeah to anyone who has paid already have you received the details via pm regarding on how to join the group? Or will Hilarious still wait until he received all the payments regarding the World Cup pool?
It would make sense for him to wait a while until the majority has been sent, and send the message in one rather than individually.
5255  Other / Off-topic / Re: What do you think about Hitler? on: June 11, 2018, 12:52:40 AM
The only arguments that I've seen for Hitler is that he had good policies when first trying to get into power. This might of well been the case, however you've really got to consider the motives of these policies. To me it seems that he was trying to gain mass support to get into power, and at that point it would be incredibly difficult to dislodge him.

Maybe he did have good intentions, and the power got to his head. But, ultimately he done fucked up when he was in power, and that's all that really matters.

So all your thoughts are actually not yours, they are just the ones implanted by the winners and if Hitler had won, you would be thinking he is God and democracy is shit.
Probably, because of this nasty little habit he had that when he got pissed off he just decided to cleanse a certain ethnic group.

Yes, you are right. The media has unfairly demonized him. He was actually a top bloke.
Painted a picture of my lambo once for FREE. Top quality painting, and top bloke.

Don't be fooled by others opinions. think for yourself if what he actually did is right?

That source doesn't look to be very reputable, and data is often skewed. Especially on a topic such as intelligence as that's often subjective.

Any person who supports killing of another human being without valid criminal or judicial reasons is no different than an animal.
Here we are dealing with Millions of deaths and its disappointing to see people taking sides with him.
Animals aren't rampaging manics you know right? They don't just go out, and kill for fun. They are much like humans in a sense that they are willing to kill for territorial gains, and to eat. Just like humans wage wars for power, money, and food. In medieval times, and before kings used to wage wars just for farm land so they could support their growing population or spread out their population to prevent disease, because of the ever growing shit that was being expelled by it's population, and not being disposed of. I mean the Vikings initially invaded England to gain farm land for crops.

5256  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Was bitcoin created by the NSA? your thoughts on: June 11, 2018, 12:42:17 AM
The way Bitcoin works as in a decentralized manner it doesn't really matter who created it for what ever motives. It works, and is a great improvement from traditional fiat currencies. I would say that Bitcoin stands against everything the NSA works for though. It would be counter productive for them to create something like Bitcoin which allows people to remain anonymous. I guess anonymity in Bitcoin can easily be compromised if the right precautions aren't taken, and maybe that's what they were hoping to rely on.  I doubt it though, and other than speculation I have no other reasons to believe the NSA are behind Bitcoin.

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt."
— ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
I've always disliked this quote. Even if you are wrong sometimes the only way to learn is to be vocal about it, and get others opinions/insight. Keeping silent just means you'll continue being a "fool". So what if you are wrong as long as your willing to listen to others then there shouldn't be a problem with voicing your interpretation of things.

Kinda unrelated, but just noticed something interesting.
This is Hal Finney's bitcointalk account: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2436
Hal Finney died on 2014. But last login to this account occurred in 2017.
The account was thought to be compromised, and locked by theymos. It's also believed that Hal's email was compromised as a result also, due to the accounts password being reset through it.
5257  Other / Meta / Re: Signatures & forum ads on: June 11, 2018, 12:04:00 AM
I've also just found the quote that confirms Hero members, Donators, and VIPs have the option to disable forum ads.
I'll add an option next week allowing hero members, Donators, and VIPs to disable advertisements.

Obviously, Legendary members didn't exist back then, but they also inherit the permissions of hero members.

Nope, forum ads can't be blocked in general using ABP-style (ie. EasyList-compatible) adblockers without also breaking the forum for you. The page is laid out such that the ad area can't be unambiguously selected by CSS selectors. If you use eg. ABP's Element Hiding Helper, it'll work on the page you're viewing, and then it'll either stop working on your next pageload or start hiding random posts and/or other bits of the forum.
I see. I've just stumbled across the thread where this was all discussed for anyone that wishes to read the ongoing battle against Ad Blockers. Like I said I don't really have a problem with the ads, and don't hide them myself. I do understand if people want too though.

Have you considered allowing everyone to have the option of disabling advertisements? Have it unchecked by default. Most people probably wouldn't bother, but for those who wish to view the forum as ad free as possible could do just that. Maybe, add something along the lines of "By ticking this option you are no longer contributing to the moderation of the forum, and it's improvements" or something along those lines instead of the current message.

This probably answers my question though: Tongue

Is someone holding a gun to your head and making you look at the ads? Tongue I'm free to send you whatever data I want when you request a page, and you can interpret it however you want.
5258  Other / Meta / Re: Signatures & forum ads on: June 10, 2018, 11:34:02 PM
The way theymos has the ads to be displayed he tries for them to avoid adblocker as much as he can
Yeah, but AFAIK they can still be blacklisted, and blocked. I wouldn't recommend it as your contributing to the revenue of the forum which could lead to more moderators as well as rewarding existing ones. But, I also understand the frustration of ads as they are everywhere on the internet these days, and websites are learning to bypass ad blockers.

My opinion is that everyone should have the option to disable ads regardless of what rank they are. However, on second thoughts I can completely understand from theymos' point of view, because at the end of the day it's revenue, and it's partly because of this revenue that mods can be paid. So I do understand that point of view.
5259  Other / Meta / Re: Signatures & forum ads on: June 10, 2018, 11:19:56 PM

Here's another topic which indeed confirms I'm not talking through my arse, and that option does exist. Cheesy

I was looking for the info to link to, couldn't find it quickly but iirc that option is tied to hero and above.

I hope no one uses it though, the ads are very unobtrusive and it helps with the forums finances so it seems wrong to disable them to me.

I had a feeling that it was tied to higher accounts, and that's why I did offer the advice of maybe looking at custom filters on an Ad Blocker extension. I'm not entirely sure why something like this would be restricted though to be completely honest with you.

If you are going the Ad Blocker route I believe theymos does change the code to prevent this from happening, and it would require ongoing manual work to keep on blacklisting the ads. I've never tried this, so you'll have to figure it out for yourself if it can be done. Plus, does it really warrant the work that has to be done just to prevent seeing the ads? I barely notice them, and giving enough time your brain will likely ignore them automatically anyway. theymos has some pretty strict guidelines on what can be displayed as a ad so it's not likely that you'll see obstructive ads.
5260  Other / Meta / Re: The Newbie/spammers problem. Solution anyone? on: June 10, 2018, 11:05:25 PM
The Solution
The perfect solution doesn't exist. The only thorough 'solution' would be to impose restrictions. Whether, that would be completely removing signatures, bounties, and campaigns or limiting certain sections to certain ranks. I've made this clear a few times that I'm normally against restrictions, however this particular issue is effecting the forum in every aspect. Therefore, restrictions may well be justified in this case.

The thing is about the other solutions we could ask the campaign managers to set stricter rules until we are all blue in the face, but they aren't going to do anything, unless there's punishments for their actions. The advertisers which hire the managers aren't interested about those who spam, and only that their name gets out there. So convincing them would to request stricter rules would also be a lost cause.

They are suffering from poverty and if they have a chance to get money they will take it. That is why I can understand all the effort of them, even if it’s very limited.
Effort? If they put in a effort there wouldn't be a problem. I'm not against people who want to make a living off the forum if they can. But, breaking the rules, and making the forum unpleasant for others isn't something I tolerate.

The fact of the matter being is they put in minimal effort even though they claim they can make a living from the payments they receive from campaigns. I don't know about you, but if I was getting paid well I would be motivated to further my skills, and keep that job. It's well known that money is a good motivator, and is often offered as an incentive. For example, promotions are often chased after by existing employees resulting in increased workload from them.

So what I can't understand is why these very people don't work on their posts, and language skills. But, I guess we already know it's a lack of moderation from the campaign managers. If there was much stricter rules put in place on who gets accepted only the best of the best would be accepted. Resulting in a cleaner forum, better posts, and legitimate people who put in the effort getting selected.

Currently, the majority don't make any effort at all. All they make an effort in is ranking up their accounts, and getting accepted. Then they are set, and spam throughout the forum.

And yes, the result of their participation is a huge amount of meaningless spam, especially for bounties. Stopping this will be very likely not possible, I think if the price per Bitcoin raises again we’ll see another bunch of new members only interested in bounties coming in here.

This could be stopped if there was restrictions imposed. Although, I don't think this is the best solution it's definitely a option right now which I'm hoping theymos is at least considering if the other options don't work.

There's also more moderation, however this also has it's drawbacks, but I would prefer to have a few more mods that complete restrictions.

But I have some concerns launching a registration process like a KYC. One of the main points Bitcoin stands for is anonymity (at least you can see the transactions but it isn’t related to a name). The most of the latest upcoming ICOs require KYC, even some bounties or airdrops and I don’t know if this is the right direction. This was never the idea from Satoshi and I don’t know if he’d liked the idea to implement a KYC in this forum.
It’s true a KYC will complicate cheating but we would have to pay this with everyone’s privacy.

Alright, yeah I can agree on you with this. I think it's worth mentioning that KYC wouldn't completely prevent it either. There's several ways that someone could submit faked documents, and the process would require quite a bit of manpower to verify this sort of information as well as storing it securely which is probably one of the biggest concerns. KYC would never be implemented on Bitcointalk, but campaign managers might go down this route.

I don't see why KYC would actually help the spam issue really.

This is my main point we can still improve: every bounty manager should run less campaigns but do more research about the participants joining his campaigns. There are lots of things we can improve regarding bounty management, so only a short conclusion:
- less but more meanigful comments per week for signature campaigns
- stakes distribution only if a certain amount of merit is reached during the campaign
- check connected accounts and weed out signature cheaters / excessive shitposters
- check carefully if the translations are original or from a Google-Translate-cheater (therefore I’ve created a thread in the German section to prevent and report this, translation cheating seems to be a big problem in the Altcoin section)
- a blacklist of cheaters (valid for every section of the bounty like content, social media…) used by every bounty manager (difficult to implement, but quite effective I think

1/2. Ideally posts would be restricted to a merit system which you would be required to earn a certain amount of merits per period. However, I understand that many great posts don't receive merit so this could be an issue as it's then based on RNG especially given that some of the payment periods are 1/2 weeks.

3. Probably hard to do if they haven't already been tagged. Quite frankly most campaign managers don't do any research into their participants other than looking at their first page of history.

4. This is very difficult if you don't speak that language yourself. It can be easy to spot Google translations now, and again. But, sometimes Google translations can be surprisingly accurate as well. You would have to speak the language yourself or have someone on your team able to speak it which kind of defeats the point of hiring someone to translate posts then. Translations are based on trust which unfortunately gets abused due to it being difficult for the non speaker to verify if the translation is accurate.

5. Several lists exist. The fact of the matter being is campaign managers don't care about who they employ to spread their name as long as it's happening. To them the more the merrier.

Why? More than one account doesn't have to mean spam. There are people here who have more than 1 account and are not making any money on it. At the same time there are people here with more than one account and only one in a campaign. Don't put them all in one basket with newbies who come here hoping for a good and easy gain.
Making sure each person has only 1 account would reduce spam for sure, but how would you enforce it? Confirmation links would be an improvement but you can make a new mailbox almost instantly. A phone maybe? But what about those who have a couple numbers? I think it can't be done.
Every system that's imposed to prevent those from registering multiple accounts will be bypassed. It's simply to hard to determine whether an account is connected if the proper measures are taken. Plus, I don't see the problem with alternate accounts. Many people have alternate accounts for many different reasons. I'll give a few examples; 1. Bot accounts to scrape data from the forum, or post charts. 2. To access the forum on a insecure connection/device. 3. Separate their personal opinions from that of their business.

There's probably many more reasons to have alternate accounts that I'm not listing here. Alt accounts fundamentally aren't malicious.
