5341  Other / Meta / Re: Forum moderators deleting posts they don't like? on: May 21, 2018, 10:38:45 PM
Referees are not questioned by the players in a game.
They are. There's tonnes of different conspiracy theories about them fixing games. This also applies to the moderators of this forum whenever a post is deleted in the eyes of the person who is complaining it's never their lack of understanding of the forums rules, but that of the mods.

90% of cases it's the person complaining that's overlooked the rules or not bothered to read them. In some cases the mod might of made a mistake. So what? It happens I've had moderators apologize for marking a report bad in the past, and they didn't need to do that. Moderators are human too. Let's not forget that they aren't employees either, and volunteer to clean up the mess for all of us to have a more pleasant experience.

I don't mind being questioned, I am a new mod here and I can make a mistake.  I'm also pretty sure that the man in the big chair is watching what I am doing.  AFAIK theymos takes mod abuse seriously and I believe he is watching the stats he has and other tools to asses the worthiness of his mods.
Your fine. Even if you make mistakes theymos understands that your just human, and there's always a vetting in process when accepting new responsibilities. Unless, you are abusing your position then I can't see theymos doing anything other than letting you know to improve if you are falling short.
5342  Other / Meta / Re: New Report to moderator stats ;) thank you theymos on: May 21, 2018, 10:22:52 PM
Well lets be honest the current Merits system is easy to abuse too , If we go to any local forum right now I can show the amount of Merits that being giving away for just an Ann translation or literally useless posts
This isn't always abuse, rather it's misuse of the merit system. Besides, the initial merit people received will run out, and we'll see less signature campaigns, and announcement threads getting merit. Small amounts aren't too bad in the grand scheme of things.

Well I thought Merits is made to fight and reduce the spam on this forums and I think reporting a spam fall under the same category ( Fighting spam ) .

I disagree. I believe merits should be only used for rewarding high quality posts. I'll give you an example why reports are way to easy to get merits. I have 32k reports if that translated into merit it would mean I would be well above even theymos who has received the most merit. Plus, many other members who post technical, informative, and intriguing content which is unfair to them. This would easily be abused too via users posting with brand new newbie accounts, and reporting it with their main accounts.

We would no longer see people contributing to the forum with high quality posts, instead they would setup automatic bots to post, and report the posts. Thus, the merit system would become useless.

5343  Other / Serious discussion / Re: My theory: the GAMING INDUSTRY will be BTC strongest ALLY in the upcoming years. on: May 20, 2018, 09:27:41 PM
I think we'll see more Esports integrating Bitcoin rewards in the future, and hopefully more people sponsoring such events with their BTC. Perhaps some advertisements to appeal to the gaming community in general.

At this moment crypto is actually hurting the gaming industry because of the high prices of GPUs.
More people are turning to consoles and the games that are generating most of the money are PC based ones.
MMORPGs and FPSs are best played on PC.
Gaming isn't limited to PCs though so your argument is only partly correct. It would be more accurate to say cryptocurrencies are having a negative impact of the PC market due to the increasing prices of GPUs.

I agree and think the gaining industry will create quite a bit of wealth from the launching of new mineable coins that will be used in games.

That's a thought. I can imagine a few MMORPGs trying this out in the future. Integrating their own cryptocurrency which will both act within the game, and an investment outside of it.
5344  Other / Meta / Re: sMerit deadline on: May 20, 2018, 06:31:18 PM
Decay -> merit pool is just a more complicated way to turn up the tap on source merits IMO.  Might as well just up source merit for guys like you that are running out of it!
I think that's fair, and it merit going to waste shouldn't be too much of a problem when there's more merit sources covering different sections, local boards and timezones.
Again I don't personally care if they're decayed or not but if they are then I won't have any merit to give in the event I do see a meritorious post, and I've given a little out so far and happily give merit when I see the need.  Decaying it will not force me to spend it.  It may put more into a pool but it would also limit my ability to use it as I see fit.

If I have it I will use it when I can, if I don't well I can't use it.  I say turn up source merit and leave regular users to use it how they see fit!
Quite like that perspective.
5345  Other / Meta / Re: sMerit deadline on: May 20, 2018, 06:04:45 PM
Instead of decaying merit, perhaps having sMerit non sources haven't used go towards a pool that the merit sources can draw off of. Seems a shame that sMerit would go to waste when it could be put to good use for those who are willing to award good quality posts.

I don't personally care if merit is "decayed" in some way.  Any system of decay will NOT prompt me personally to send more merit.  I don't have that much left (not a source) but my problem is always finding decent posts (that aren't repetitive).

I'm not sure decaying them will have the desired result.  I would rather they go back to ground from whence they came then give them to shitposters.

I have the opposite problem; Too many posts which require merit Cheesy
5346  Other / Meta / Re: New Report to moderator stats ;) thank you theymos on: May 20, 2018, 02:51:33 PM
Users who didn't made a report in the last 30 days, normally couldn't find anything in their history.
If you mean that you have for example less than 10 reports and you couldn't see how many are good/bad/unhandled then probably you are right about the minimum requirement (even if i don't understand the reason behind it)

Potential reasons could be to prevent users who aren't posting regular enough to complain about their reports not being handled or being marked bad which I expressed my concerns about earlier in the thread. Could also be that users who don't report regular don't need access to the in depth data that the regulars do.
5347  Other / Meta / Re: ■■■My 2013 legendary account was hacked :( help me to find how and to recover it on: May 20, 2018, 12:09:44 PM
I always thought that autofills key the passwords to hostname or domain name contained in the canonical URL. They are not tricked by phishing sites where the domain name is mistyped or simply looks the same visually to the real site.
That depends on the type of autofill used. Sometimes autofill features just save the password, and ask you if you want to input your saved password on the site. Another example, Keepass has a auto complete feature which will auto complete your password by finding certain strings of text and inputting your your username/password that way. This doesn't check whether the URL is correct unless, you've specifically specified that in Keepass.

I'm unfamiliar with chrome/firefox auto fill but, I know that they have an option to automatically fill in credit cards, and other information which isn't specifically related to a certain URL.

When I went to a known site and I saved the password, both username and password would be autocopiled and in yellow background. I think this function will only work for known urls, I am pretty sure I used it, and I can't find any phishing link in my chronology (but searching is difficult because of mobile, I could have missed it).

Still, I'm wondering if I changed the password after the 2015 hack. I think I did so but I'm not 100% sure...
I'm guessing you are using your browsers autofill feature then.

If it 100% checks the URL then you may be alright to use auto fill. Although, I would check this to be sure for the future as I mentioned above not all auto fill features work like that.
5348  Other / Meta / Re: Something About Merit System on: May 20, 2018, 09:05:54 AM
Busted for abusing bounties with alt accounts: ☑
Busted for abusing the merit system: ☑
Uses the word "sir": ☑
Thread to moan about the merit system: ☑

I think that this is wrong because new persons and neutral persons are not giving merits to anyone because they are scare by watching that when they give merit to any person self created forum moderators (users) will give them merit abuse so we cannot exchange merits in this way. thats why new account holders have less merits this is the reason behind this and forum authority should review this as well.
This isn't the reason at all. No one's scared of giving anyone merit, although in some cases it's obvious that there's abuse going on. I've seen plenty of newbies being rewarded for good quality posts, and have reached higher ranks since.

5349  Other / Meta / Re: New Report to moderator stats ;) thank you theymos on: May 19, 2018, 10:26:08 PM
Once I saw this thread a good idea come to my mind . What you guys think about getting points ( Merit ) for every successful report ! would that work ?

I think it will be good incentive for people and  encourage them  to report bad behavior .

It's been discussed, and there's two reasons why it's a bad idea:

1. Easy to abuse. For example, users creating alt accounts, and purposely posting something which would result in a good report.

2. Merits are suppose to be used for rewarding a high quality post. Merits shouldn't be used for anything other than the measure of a users post quality.

Having a clean forum should be enough of an incentive.
5350  Other / Meta / Re: Please can we have a political discussion board. on: May 19, 2018, 08:54:04 PM
I know this is off-topic, but I had to look that up.  Looks like it's acetaminophen, which I'm very familiar with and which doesn't tend to kill people if they take it as directed and don't have any sort of underlying liver issues.  And fortunately for those people who intentionally overdose, there is an antidote that can be administered if it's caught in time.  I'm not certain that's what Jet Cash is talking about, however.

I agree, the shitposting for activity is starting to creep into Meta (and other sections), and that's unfortunate indeed.
A bit of a joke. I'm not sure if it's as popular as it is over here in the United Kingdom, but it's a common medicine for children. I know several people who have since admitted faking ill as a child just to have it. It's loaded with sugar, and used to taste great. Although, it's commonly criticized for being overused by parents on their children. The dangers can be serious if not moderated, but was initially made as a little joke.

Well that's completely understandable, provided that we are talking about the strawberry flavor here. It would be very easy to unintentionally overdose on it - that shit is fucking delicious. Almost too delicious...
Right? I'm going back a very long time the last time I tasted it, but seems they are using sugar free versions now and, I doubt it tastes the same now.

Are you trying to say that P & S mod is not doing his job? wait for the cartel members to tag and defame you for your sins.

I don't think anyone is implying that. We all knew how hard it would be to clean up that cesspool, and The Flyinghell fish is currently knee deep in it.

I agree, the shitposting for activity is starting to creep into Meta (and other sections), and that's unfortunate indeed.
The "great project", and similar posts has started to leak into project development. Let's not even mention the Beginners and help section.
5351  Other / Meta / Re: [paid spamming] Bump Bots post and delete thousands of posts per day NUKE PLEASE on: May 19, 2018, 08:45:14 PM
A shadow ban works only on the account you use, the spammer who has 35 accounts in his bot is unlikely to read the forum from any one of those accounts. Unless you mean their current bots won't get a banned-error and doesn't realize it needs to switch to the next batch of accounts > that would work!
Yeah that's what I mean. They probably wouldn't notice for at least a while, and any way to inconvenience them would be great.

I think he is referring to MindlessElectron
5352  Other / Meta / Re: [paid spamming] Bump Bots post and delete thousands of posts per day NUKE PLEASE on: May 19, 2018, 03:27:12 PM
I've been thinking that something like a shadow ban could be useful in these situations , and a few others. It seems most of these bots are using the same phrases without even changing a character. They've been doing this for a few days now. I'm sure mitchell could hook up his bot to automatically flag these phrases or report them automatically so there's a little bit of human interpretation to avoid any issues. Then if they feel the account is guilty of posting, and then deleting it's responses in hopes of bumping the topic it could get shadow banned.

Meaning they would see it as if they were posting their message, and deleting it. But, in reality no one else sees it. They are obviously running automated systems so probably wouldn't even realize. Even, if they did it would only take a little manual observation to determine their new sets of phrases, and add them to Mitchells bot.

I've noticed the example above posted by the exact same person for a few days now. "lastlinger". In fact just posted once again. I think this confirms that there aren't to many newly registered accounts doing this, and they are simply reusing their current accounts. Banning these members would likely result in them registering a new account, and starting over. Although, shadow banning could make it more difficult for them to tell.

I think this should be enforced for everybody on this forum.
Lots of hacked accounts are deleting their history, shills are deleting proofs after the scam ICO has finished and many more....
I'm active on another forum where you can't edit your posts after 1 hour nor can you delete them, and it's pretty funny  especially in the politics section to look at the users history and then rub it in their face   Grin Grin.

This wouldn't really help the situation that the OP is about though. As they aren't waiting for a hour to pass, and are simply just deleting them after a few seconds have passed.
5353  Other / Meta / Re: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again on: May 19, 2018, 08:15:03 AM
I think the bee analogy is particularly bad. Bees are extremely industrious and beneficial, and, in fact, without the activities of bees and other pollinators, there would be virtually no food for us to eat.

Although, I agree. It does make me think of this:

Forum right now:
5354  Other / Meta / Re: Merit source application on: May 19, 2018, 08:09:13 AM
In regards to the request for the 10 required posts, I don't feel that I have to do them because we don't actually have any kind of spamming.
However, the distribution/awarding merit is absent.
You don't have to provide posts that are spam, but ones that you think are worthy of merits. (ideally ones that are under merited) Your much more likely to get accepted if you actually make the effort of finding these posts, and show that you can identify suitable posts rather than just stating your desire to become a merit source.
5355  Other / Serious discussion / Re: Assuming Satoshi owns a million Bitcoin but lost his private keys... on: May 18, 2018, 07:44:51 PM
Assuming Satoshi is alive, still have the private key and wish to sell the Bitcoin, that would be difficult since exchange can trace deposit source and it's not difficult since most Bitcoin in early years were mined with Satoshi.
Satoshi's only chance is using decentralized exchange with proper configuration, secure connection and exchange to private cryptocurrency to ensure his/her/their safety and anonymity. But the problem is decentralized exchange trading volume is very low Roll Eyes

Also, there are many cryptocurrency where founder owns high percentage (1% or more) of total supply, especially Ripple Tongue

That's assuming that he would want to exchange his Bitcoin for fiat. I doubt he would personally.
5356  Other / Meta / Re: New Report to moderator stats ;) thank you theymos on: May 18, 2018, 07:16:32 PM
Well the more resources, the better. (Not sure if the grammar is correct here). In my link I found other similarities too not only the well known RU/BG Cyrillic. There are letters like S J Y etc. I didn't knew were Cyrillic from Ukrainian, Belarusian, Serbian etc. Hope I can make a list as soon as I get to a pc.

That's true. But, yours had what mine had in it, and more. So wasn't any point really. I was also unaware of the different languages usage of Cyrillic.
5357  Other / Meta / Re: [paid spamming] Newbie Bump Bots post and delete thousands of posts per day on: May 18, 2018, 07:12:38 PM
Also, noticed this. I remember this was happening in the marketplace too. Perhaps another solution would be to increase the cool down for a newbie to delete a post. Something which is separate to the cool down to post. Would give time to identify if they are abusing the deletion button without hindering them completely.

I can think of several solutions:
-Ignore Newbies when sorting on "Last post" date. This way, Newbies can't bump threads anymore.

Good idea, and doesn't hurt the users posting directly. Without disallowing newbies completely.
-Nuke all Newbies who have deleted more than x (say x=2, make it x=5 if they  have more than 14 posts) of their own posts

Probably unnecessary.
-Take away the possibilities for Newbies to delete their posts

Would hinder legitmate usage of deleting posts.
-Require a captcha for Newbies for either posting and/or deleting a post

Could work. Would probably be a pain in the arse for legitimate users.

5358  Other / Meta / Re: New Report to moderator stats ;) thank you theymos on: May 18, 2018, 07:02:35 PM
Does someone have a table of these characters? I can automatically convert non-standard characters to ASCII.

This is the one I use:
http://sites.psu.edu/symbolcodes/languages/europe/cyrillic/cyrillicchart/

@Welsh,   now I saw that you edited it your comment. Why did you remove it now man.

There are more characters see the link I posted, not only the main Cyrillic, like:
CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER DZE   Ѕ   &‌#1029;   &‌#x0405;

I thought yours was a better resource, and therefore mine was redundant.  I was going to initially format a table here on the forum but, decided against that  Cheesy
5359  Other / Meta / Re: please, Please, PLEASE, can the mods start locking old threads. on: May 18, 2018, 06:20:07 PM
Reported that within a few minutes. What I don't understand is the fact it's off topic in that thread, and not a recently bumped thread. Looking at their post history tells me it's a bot, and a pretty shitty one at that.
5360  Other / Meta / Re: Please can we have a political discussion board. on: May 18, 2018, 04:13:29 PM
The reason I say this is because, as you well know, we have many users trying to rank up accounts, and it's easy to get activity on P&S (and off-topic).
Unfortunately, it's no longer confined to these sections either.

Now that's an interesting thought.  Which meds are being used to kill people?
Calpol, nasty stuff.

And extreme views, not politically correct, anti-deep state, global eugenics (what?), nefarious uses of pharma meds, etc., all sound like great discussions to get on the table.
Otherwise known as the interesting stuff. The sort of discussion which existed before the onslaught of the spammers, and account farmers. Plus, there isn't too many forums out there that will allow the sort of freedom of speech that is allowed here.
