541  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is cryptocurrency bad for the environment? on: August 16, 2021, 06:01:42 PM
Bitcoin mining is considered environmentally unfriendly because it uses fossil fuel energy. If crypto or bitcoin mining uses solar energy or water, surely the mining will be environmentally friendly. In my opinion, in addition to the proof of stake system, using a proof of work system like bitcoin is also not a problem as long as it uses environmentally friendly renewable energy.

There is no requirement in Bitcoin mining industry that electricity should be generated specifically from the fossil fuels. The miners use electricity from the national grid and therefore it is not their responsibility to check whether the power generation is done using renewable sources or not. If the environmental activists are so concerned, then they should request the government to shut down all the coal-fired power plants and pay double price for energy that is generated from solar or wind powerplants.
542  Economy / Economics / Re: China - everything is fine! But everything is bad ... on: August 16, 2021, 05:42:56 PM
Maybe in another 10 years, China will be remembered as the country that once had the opportunity to have a monopoly in Bitcoin mining. They had the perfect conditions - most affordable mining equipment, low cost electricity and productive workforce. But due to the stupidity of the government, the miners are moving their infrastructure to the neighboring countries such as Kazakhstan and Mongolia. And when global acceptance of Bitcoin happens, the Chinese government will regret about the lost opportunity they once had.

Jos Buttler and Ollie Robinson have built a useful partnership when the team needs it. Buttler made 25 off 94 balls. Now they need to bat to draw the match. The match will be a draw if the pair can survive a few more overs. I'm still hoping for a draw.

The partnership is broken now. Jasprit Bumrah got the wicket of Ollie Robinson. 9 overs remain and India needs to take another two wickets. Oh.. just now Jos Buttler was nabbed by Mohammed Siraj. That means India is just one wicket away from victory. Really pathetic performance from the England batsmen. After Joe Root got out, none of the other batsmen even managed to put any decent fight. And the Indian pacers were simply outstanding. Everyone of them contributed with frequent strikes.
544  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will bitcoin go down below $20,000. on: August 16, 2021, 05:19:52 PM
Now we are at 46-47K, and the chances of going to 20K is very remote IMO. One thing I can say with 100% confidence - a lot of buyers are sitting on the fence (including those from institutions), and they are patiently waiting for an opportunity to accumulate coins at low rates. We saw this when the prices rapidly recovered rapidly from 28K to 45K in a matter of days. A lot of them were waiting for 20K to hoard coins, but that opportunity never came. I am waiting for the next move from them. They may go for the purchase before 50K, or they may wait for lower prices.
545  Economy / Economics / Re: Philanthropy as a paradox for the uber-rich on: August 16, 2021, 05:00:30 PM
Bill Gates was an aggressive businessman in his young days and he battled anyone who he saw as a competitor and destroyed their business and mocked them. The most famous one was his fight against Netscape which is well documented and to drive them out of business he started giving away free browser with the OS.

When he started with his foundation i really thought that Bill Gates was doing that to change his image from an ruthless businessman to a different one and i still stand by my view  Grin, having said that i am not sure about the companies tax filings and whether they are getting any undue tax exemption.

It is a very tricky situation. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation did a lot of good work in the developing world, unfortunately at the expense of the American taxpayer. Since the shares were transferred to the Foundation, they will never be taxed. According to estimates, this has cost a loss of $20 billion to $30 billion to the American treasury. You can say that the African and Asian nations need the aid, but then there are many in the US also who deserves the aid. Microsoft made most of its profits in the US, and that's why I think that what they did was not fair to the Americans.
546  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ethereum is not a rival of Bitcoin on: August 16, 2021, 04:45:24 PM
The comparison of the value of etherum and bitcoin is very far, the price of one BTC is $ 45,975 and one Etherum is $ 3,152 (15 August 2021, 16:53:00). Etherum is far behind BTC, although Etherum’s current popularity is great, unfortunately Etherum still can’t be the first in the market. what do you think?

The biggest application of Bitcoin is for making payments and as a speculative investment asset. On the other hand, the most important use of Ethereum is for smart contract platforms. However, there is a large overlap between these two. Ethereum can also be used for making payments, and lately returns from ETH has been higher than those from Bitcoin. There is zero chance that ETH will be able to overtake BTC anytime in the next 10 years, but from what we have seen so far, it is poaching a lot of users from Bitcoin.
547  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The recent surge in Covid-19 is making vaccine makers to have a rethink on: August 16, 2021, 04:30:07 PM
The government can only do so much about their vaccination program. If they cannot convince the general public that vaccination works, even with tons of free vaccination programs, then that is outside the ambit of their scope. You cannot force someone to get vaccinated as it will tantamount to involuntary servitude. The only thing that the government can do is to provide concrete data and information that vaccines do work!

Here in the Philippines, after the government announced that the public cannot visit malls without any prior vaccination, tons of people marched into vaccination sites to get vaccinated. There has to be some sort of tradeoff where you would impose to convince the general public to get vaccinated.

It is a very difficult question. I am not someone who supports authoritarianism from the government authorities. But here it is very difficult to take a particular side. If I don't support the move from the government, then I will be indirectly supporting the spread of the virus. But my fear is that if I support them this time, then they will use it an opportunity to steal personal liberties in the future. Can't trust the government, irrespective of whether you are living in a third world nation, or in a developed country.

Yes, i had long forgotten about bitcoin since i was busy and think that the price had went down way a lot. But then, the price went up again. Thankfully, bitcoin helped me so much during the pandemic, although none of my family member got fired or anything during pandemic, but still it is hard. But i believed a lot of people benefited from cryptocurrency investment, and i'm happy too to see bitcoin being alive and rising again. So different with stocks, all of my portofolio in stocks are red, i experienced loss so much during the pandemic. Luckily bitcoin is not affected much, even being higher than ever.

I am surprised that your stocks are in red. Most of my stocks are in good profits, and most of them went up by 50%-60% this year, with some of them giving as much as 250% returns. I never had this sort of returns from the stock market, since the crazy bull run of 2007-08. Did you invested in any specific sector, such as aviation or banking? These sectors are not doing great, from what I heard. In my portfolio, close to 90% of the stocks are in dark green (I have around four dozen different stocks).
549  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Olympics 2020/2021 : Discussion & Predictions on: August 16, 2021, 04:01:37 PM
By the way, during that Olympiad in Russia, a law was passed simplifying the seizure of land from the population, and it still works. So we can say that that Olympiad turned out to be a disaster for a huge number of people.

That is really tragic. I heard that recently the property prices in Sochi and surrounding regions within Krasnodar territory went to the roof. Unfortunately, if what you are saying is true, then very few of the original owners benefited from it. It is sad that an event like Olympics was used to give legitimacy to the seizure of land from the original owners. The International Olympic Committee should also look in to it. If the regime is using Olympics for such purpose, then in the end it tarnishes the reputation of the games.
550  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Taxes on gambling send the right message? on: August 16, 2021, 03:49:18 PM
The customers may notice this, and may instead go to illegal gambling dens. In the end, the legal casinos will lose their business, and the government will witness a fall in tax revenue.
Why will the customers go for illegal gambling when gambling is accepted in the country, only this can be used when gambling is not allowed in a country just like Muslims countries, but if gambling is legal, gambling sites will want to follow the rules and laws of their government. But what I know is that people that know about cryptocurrency's gambling site will see it attractive as no tax may be paid.

Normal people won't consider illegal casinos, if the legal ones are available. But legal casinos, for most part have strict KYC requirements. And this creates issues for those who have unaccounted funds, or those who have links with shady transactions. I don't think that someone would go to an illegal casino just because the house advantage is one or two percentage lower. The only instance when they depend on an illegal casino is in cases where they have issues with KYC requirements or they are legally prohibited from spending their funds on gambling.

Edit: Joe Root gone!

This can be a game changer. Joe Root is like the only English batsman who was in form and now he's gone. And more than 30 overs remain for today, with India 5 wickets away from a win. Now they are down to the last recognized batting pair (Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali, and both of them are out of form). I believe there is enough time for Indians to get the remaining 5 wickets, given the fact that apart from Sam Curran, the England lower order is mostly comprised of genuine tailenders.
552  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: You got a pifzer ? Then you can be eligible for lottery in Poland. on: August 15, 2021, 05:51:08 PM
So what? Do you now propose to do both vaccinations (Modern and Pfizer) at the same time? In addition, we still do not get away from the fact that even a vaccinated person can be a carrier of the virus and in him it can mutate (and produce more deadly strains), albeit with a lower intensity.
Well, the level of protection actually looks dubious, given that millions of people get sick, protection by 76 percent reduces the overall picture of the incidence weakly - maybe it only slows down the spread of the virus a little. In any case, this does not look like a "final solution" and a way to defeat the virus.
By the way, what will we do when the next strain appears, against which both Modern and Pfizer will be even weaker?

Do you have a solution other than vaccination? Even an efficacy of 76% is significant. That means four times less people who are infected with the virus. And that also means that the spread of the virus can be contained, as the infected are less likely to infect others. If you look at the current situation in the United States, the regions with largest number of active cases are states like Arkansas, where the vaccination rate is very low. The chances of further mutations decrease, if there are less number of carriers of the virus. So even a 76% reduction is OK for me.

India need minimum 50 more runs if they want to compete. Pant-Jadeja duo is capable of reaching this target and everything after 200 runs is bonus, hope they survive the new ball. India will surely miss Ashwin tomorrow.

Jadeja was the last man out. India has lost 6 of their wickets and now they are down to the tail, with Ishant Sharma giving company to Rishabh Pant. They are having a lead of 154. Extending it to 200 will not be impossible, but it is definitely going to be difficult as hell. Ishant is the only one who can add 10-20 runs. I don't have any hope for the other three (Shami, Bumrah and Siraj). That said, I don't want to claim that the omission of Ashwin was a mistake. His replacement (Siraj) took 4 important wickets in the England first innings.
554  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: August 15, 2021, 04:32:21 PM
Everything was going well for India, and then Cheteshwar Pujara got out to Mark Wood. He had batted patiently for so long.. but in the end, he couldn't keep his bat away on time. I don't have much hope on Rishabh Pant, as he is not suitable for such conditions. He will bat in usual T20 style, irrespective of the surface conditions. And after him and Jadeja, the tail starts. And this time India went with 4 genuine tailenders. So they need to bat out the remaining 16 overs without losing anymore wickets.
555  Economy / Economics / Re: In COVID-19 everyone needs motivation on: August 15, 2021, 02:07:12 PM
At the beginning of covid-19 last year when there was lockdown & shutter down everywhere in the world. Due to coronavirus economic activities were seized. There was an economic crisis everywhere. At our home, There was only one activity that continued staying at home, we were trading cryptocurrency. This activity proved our financial survival to meet our needs. But I think, there is still a need in the current time of trial that people should be given awareness about the importance of the cryptocurrency market.

When the lockdown was first announced in my country, the exchange rate of Bitcoin was $6,000 per coin. Now it stands at $46,000. Obviously those who had the means (and the risk taking appetite) to invest in cryptocurrency benefitted from the bull run. And it is not just the cryptocurrency market. Even the stock market is close to ATH levels, when compared to what we had in 2020. I think a lot of investors chose to invest in stocks and cryptocurrency, as the other sectors such as real estate are looking overpriced.
556  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: {Boxing} Manny Pacquiao vs Yordenis Ugas on: August 15, 2021, 01:58:00 PM
This could be the last we will see Manny fight in the ring he will be very busy after this fight and by the time there is an open for a new fight, he cannot do it because he is holding a high position and it won't let him fight again, or his body could not keep up anymore so I hope he can give us a great fight and he wins another title again, I lost count how many titles he wins people are only counting weight category.

Well.. this could be his last fight. According to sources that are close to him, he wanted his farewell fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. And this time he got a fight there, after a long gap of more than two years (last one was against Keith Thurman, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena). If Pacquiao goes ahead with his decision to contest the 2022 Philippine presidential elections, then I guess he will not have time for any more matches. I strongly suspect that he will announce his retirement shortly before the fight.
557  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-14-08] Elliptic discovers site that checks how "clean" digital coins are on: August 15, 2021, 01:31:06 PM
If anyone is interested in checking it out, the onion link is here: pdcdvggsz5vhzbtxqn2rh27qovzga4pnrygya4ossewu64dqh2tvhsyd.onion

You must first purchase "tokens" using Monero. Tokens range from $1.20 to $3.00, depending on how many you are buying. Each token provides a lookup on one address. Most interestingly, you can see a full example analysis here: http://pdcdvggsz5vhzbtxqn2rh27qovzga4pnrygya4ossewu64dqh2tvhsyd.onion/example

It seems that they simply trace back all the coins in the address you give them until they arrive at an address which is known to be linked to one of their categories - Darknet markets, scam or thefts, exchanges, gambling sites, ATMs, payment processors, etc.

Not useful when the criminals mix their coins (i.e exchange their dirty coins, with freshly mined coins). In such cases, the criminals will be having "fresh" coins in his wallet, which can't be linked to any of the above mentioned categories. And some unsuspecting user may end up with the "dirty" coins, which he will receive after trading in a Dex platform, or as a reward for his freelancing work. From what I understood, their tool is useful only in cases where the coins are not mixed. Also, what if the criminals exchange BTC with some other cryptocurrency?
558  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Argentine President sees no reason to oppose Bitcoin adoption on: August 15, 2021, 01:21:17 PM
LOL.. I could understand the positive stance taken by El Salvador, since the president is fond of new technology and he is somewhat a political outsider. But the case with Argentina is different. Unlike the case with El Salvador, they have a national currency (Argentine Peso) which is very susceptible to inflation. So at this point, tolerating Bitcoin carries a certain amount of risk for them. I was expecting Ecuador to follow El Salvador's example (since they don't have a national currency). But a few weeks back, the parliament there passed an anti-Bitcoin legislation.
559  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: About the popularity of Bitcoin on: August 15, 2021, 01:11:35 PM
In which country is this? makes it very easy if you can make payments with bitcoin. especially in the era of the pandemic, it is not convenient to transact using paper money. A good solution is to use digital money for security.

The only country where Bitcoin has been given the status of legal tender is El Salvador, and therefore I assume that he is talking about that country. Also, Bitcoin remains 100% legal in dozens of nations, including some of the largest economies such as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan and Germany. But there is a difference between "legal" and "recognized as legal tender". On the other hand, there are countries where Bitcoin has been under attack. In China, there seems to be a blanket ban, while in Russia you can't use it for payments.
560  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Don't give your bitcoins to scammers on: August 15, 2021, 01:01:11 PM
Greed is embedded in human behavior and it makes people to believe that there is free money in this world. It is very simple actually. There is nothing called free money. Even in the case of airdrops, you need to spend some effort in filling the ERC-20 address and other details. Once you are aware of this, you will stay protected from such scams. And I really don't know why people believe that it is necessary to send some money first to these scams. If it is a real give-away, then you should be receiving money, and not sending it.
