Well maybe these people ought to become really normal and learn to add a couple new word to their dictionaries.
And stop using Internet Explorer while they're at it. Also, they could start fighting for their personal freedoms and abolish governments... Did that fairytale have dragons in it ? Seriously, not gonna happen. Stupid people will mostly stay stupid.

Someone needs to come up with the names of these fractions of bitcoin now and make them entrenched.
I did come up with something like this. 1 BTC1 = 0.1 BTC 1 BTC2 = 0.01 BTC 1 BTC3 = 0.001 BTC 1 BTC4 = 0.0001 BTC
OR perhaps: 1 BTCA = 0.1 BTC 1 BTCB = 0.01 BTC 1 BTCC = 0.001 BTC 1 BTCD = 0.0001 BTC
etc. People also proposed the µBTC and mBTC, but for some reason i think these won't work. Perhaps because "normal" (non-geeky) people don't really know names of all SI units.

Someone posted that bitcoin withdrawals from BTCex are temporarily disabled... "due to technical issues". However, bitcoin deposits are still working fine... Miraculously. Anyone who uses this exchange site --- knowing the information presented here --- deserves what they get. Never do business with scammers and people of no ethics. NEVER. Agreed, however... Closed for maintenance
Sorry for any inconvenience.
How do you do withdrawals on a closed site anyway ?

And the CIA won't be bending Gavin's arm or threatening his family or anything like that.
I never said they will, i just said they can. But I personally doubt it. If they invited Gavin the way they did, they will rather not try an open attack. After all Bitcoin is a perfect tool for easy transfering the funds CIA earns from illegal drugs. Also, they can use it to anonymously fund all of their dark operations without leaving a trace. So i think they are going to use it for their gains.

Golly, journeyofrivers is really going to hate me when he finds out I'm an Elected Official and a Cog in the System. Last night I voted to steal millions of dollars from taxpayers and give it to public (I know! Terrible!) schools.
(I'm only barely an elected official, one of 251 elected Amherst Town Meeting members. My punishment is long boring meetings late at night a couple times a year...)
Seriously, we probably agree on most things on a philosophical level. I just believe I'll get farther by taking "small steps to a much better world."
And I, on the other hand, just hope that you will not be corrupted by them, and will reform your ways and cut ties with them before they corrupt you too much. I doubt you can tell the CIA too much that they don't already know.... afterall... they can read all these messages. Yeah, they will definately try something. Even if Gavin won't accept money or power, they can still threaten to hurt his family or something. But anyway, the source is still free/open so i don't see many ways in which they could hurt Bitcoin. Open source projects are not governed by the laws that the rest of this civilization is governed by. Open source is like an idea. It is virtually impossible to destroy (as long as there is at least one living person developing).

if I had a bitcoin for everytime someone proposed to "fix" bitcoin by adding inflation...
They just don't get it.
Why don't they just create an inflationary counterpart to bitcoin and let the two compete? (It may be uncharitable of me, but I think it's because the pro-inflation people are mainly also the sort of people who believe in monetary monopolies. "Properly governed", of course.) As i have said many times: Market will decide which solution is better. If somebody wants moar inflation so much, they should start their own currency and compete with Bitcoin. The code is free & open - so just do it. I somebody wants to add more inflation into bitcoin then they essentially want to steal from me. I will not tolerate such a common thievery, so i will always be against adding **ANY** more inflation than satoshi envisioned. EVER.

Maybe .. but all I know of you is that you admit willingly going to the CIA ... that's immediate exile in my shit world. Actually you are thinking backwards. Gavin would be a traitor if he went to CIA, took $3000 and didn't tell us (or told us after the fact). It's exactly the opposite - because Gavin told us openly that he is going to CIA (and he openly distributes the Video from the conference later) he is **honest** with us. Liars, thieves & traitors simply don't act openly this way. ---- EDIT:Also, this is a great opportunity to find out what do they want from us. Are they hostile or not ? Know your potential enemy.

I noticed a small thing about your code immediately. Official PHP coding guidelines say to remove all ending tags ?> from php files. This fixes a number of possible errors with output buffering/compression caused by white spaces. Otherwise, great code.

Do we got a reasonable projection of how much USD wil exist by the time Bitcoins are close to reaching the big 21 mark?
Assuming the federal reserve company still exists and us is still controlled through violence (read "presidency and governments") I believe this is fairly reasonable projection of how many us dollars will exist: us$100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.00 At that time it will cost about us$100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.00 to order a coffee at a restaurant. Of course you all realize that this topic is most likely definately read by CIA when writing all these anti-governments posts ? I hope they realize they can use Bitcoin for their gains (the currency doesn't care who owns/uses it) and won't try to fight us right away.

Okay, so the pool operators code would be the main target for these efforts. I imagine there must be some super-computer houses looking at deepbit.net for instance (360GHash/s and it was put together in less than 4 months) and thinking far out ... how do we get our hands on that kind of power?
Botnet-powered bitcoin mining starts in 3..2..1...

The ISP support said: It's largely a TCP option flood. We are making adjustments to mitigate this and the smaller miscellaneous attacks also targeting the site, it should come online shortly. What was the actual reason for btcex's DDoSing you ? Does he claim that you speculate/manipulate market or what ? The guy who mailed me requests to pay him $7000 (yep, got $2000 more because I reported him) first told me he wants rates down, then told me he needs the money. So wait, are you telling me that the 0,65% is so much for him that he actually needed to DDoS you... ? Or was it about the BTC/USD rate ? In soviet russia.... money taxes you it seems.

Yet another encouragement to use Truecrypt.
Don´t forget to backup, and store this elswhere. Or the data can be lost. Any data can be lost. I have 5-year experience with Truecrypt drives and they are not suspectible to data loss much more than any other/normal hard drive. Unless, of course, you forget the password. But there are ways to easily memorize a long password.

Great work on resolving the problem and defending subsequent DDoS attempts Tux. This whole event has made me feel a bit more secure with the valuation of BTC. For such an extensive (multi-day) attack shutting down the largest exchange, the price has barely been affected. I was expecting a price dump into the $2.00-2.25 range as a result of people getting scared.
Congratulations from me as well. Also, I am proud of our community that we didn't let those incidents affect our faith in Bitcoin. Of course, these attacks were not aimed at the Bitcoin network itself (which is not easy to be attacked), only the websites related to it; nevertheless, some people might have lost faith for a while. I would love to find out who organised this attack. I wonder would he be equally courageous face to face. +1 Seems like majority here are in for the long ride. +1

It was never going to be a smooth ride.
For it to be steadily rising price or stable you would have to somehow match the increase in supply, currently fixed at BTC 7200 per day, with an unpredictable amount of demand for new BTC.
Currently inflation is at the 7,200/6.086e06 per day, i.e. 43.8% annualised rate. Wrap your head around that, monetary issuance is expanding at 43.8% annualised and the value is still rising ...
Exactly. Isn't 43,8% a "modest" amount of inflation already ? Bitcoin will have inflation for the next 100 years, its just that demand for it rises much faster than inflation.

I am not sure how law would qualify his actions and words. One thing I know for sure, ethic is not something this guy is even familiar with, let alone using it as a guide in his everyday actions. That is exactly why I will not have any biz with him ever.
Exactly. I try to be honest myself, so I am not doing business with straightly unethical characters.

Doesn't matter. He encouraged people/hackers to attack a rival exchange. That is enough. This is far from honest business.
I agree, but technically, there is nothing fraudulent about it. He was quite open with his support for the DoS. Hmmm.... –noun 1. deceit, trickery, sharp practice, or breach of confidence, perpetrated for profit or to gain some unfair or dishonest advantage. 2. a particular instance of such deceit or trickery: mail fraud; election frauds. 3. any deception, trickery, or humbug: That diet book is a fraud and a waste of time.
Close enough for me. Fraud it is.
