3581  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits.com - remember and share Bitcoin addresses on: July 11, 2011, 02:11:19 AM
Though in theory, the system is sound. In practice, things can happen. As we saw when they were using bad blocks data, the firstbits address given out may be wrong. You can never be sure that this won't happen again, right?

Can you think of ways to improve? It's not a complicated thing, maybe something open source could be written that would use your own copy of the chain?

If it ends up that you need to trust a party for look ups it is still better than other shorteners because anyone who can follow the simple rule can join and add redundancy. Obviously you can't just go trusting any one though. Hopefully some people with related business who already have trust will make conversions.

3582  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits.com - remember and share Bitcoin addresses on: July 10, 2011, 07:45:35 PM
Shortening a hash, especially a Bitcoin address is just asking for trouble.

I think the convenience of being able to remember and say enough info to rebuild an address is too much to just pass up.

I know there are risks. Can you help clarify them?
3583  Other / Off-topic / Re: How do you rate your experience with Bitcoin on a scale of 1 to 10 ...and why on: July 10, 2011, 10:28:21 AM
10

It's my one year anniversary, that's why.
3584  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin parity: what is a bitcoin worth? on: July 10, 2011, 10:23:10 AM
An ounce of gold.

Someday we will mine gold in space from asteroids or other planets, bitcoins are limited to 21M.

So for me an ouce of gold = 0.01 BTC.

Deal!

I'll take the oz of gold if that wasn't clear.
3585  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Local currencies + bitcoin on: July 10, 2011, 10:02:36 AM
I like Bitcoin. I like local currencies too. But what's the advantage in combining them? I tend to think 'local' for local currencies and 'internet' for Bitcoin.

Think about a market in a small town. Let's imagine you want to buy 10 eggs from a farmer. How do you get farmers to accept an internet currency?
And imagine you are the lucky owner of 10000 Bitcoins, and you feel like a rich man. What happens when suddenly the dollar is gone. Are you gonna
be able to satisfy your basic needs with your 10000 Bitcoins?

Yes
3586  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FirstBits.com - remember and share Bitcoin addresses on: July 10, 2011, 09:50:41 AM
Two addresses of mine, which have already 7 confirmations, still don't appear in the chain according to firstbits. Maybe the bitcoin instance running there was offline during the downtime period and isn't up to date?

Edit: It's working. Seems I needed to post something here Smiley.

It might take 6 confirms plus a few minutes. Let me know if it takes longer.
3587  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Should trading be closed on weekends?! on: July 10, 2011, 09:43:17 AM
Trading can be closed for you on the weekend. Just don't trade.
3588  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transaction fee on: July 10, 2011, 09:19:14 AM
I've paid 1.5% transaction fee just now instead 0.5% that my wallet was configured. Was sending 0.2 and fee was set for 0.001 but paid 0.003 instead. I have 0.3.24 client.

1. Why my config was ignored?
2. Don't you think that 1.5% is not so competitive?
3. How can I enforce my fees in future?

The software is not configured to pay a % fee. The various versions have diferent minimum fees, some none, some .01, the most recent I believe has .0005. That is less than 1 cent. Pretty competitive imo. Some tx will even be able to avoid the min. Large tx and old coins do not look like spam so the network will forward them even with no fee.
3589  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Show your firstbits - get 2 bitcents on: July 10, 2011, 08:29:14 AM
I found a new vanity address and somebody sent me a cent on it (thanks).  The transaction went through in 134798, and 25 blocks have been generated since.  Yet, it hasn't shown up in firstbits yet!  What's the deal?

It works now. We've improved our method of writing from the chain to our database so this can't happen anymore. From now on you should be able to get your firstbits once your address has been in the chain for 6 blocks.
3590  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Safe to use bitcoin2cc? (requires sending them funds via mybitcoin.com) on: July 10, 2011, 08:18:35 AM
I want to buy a virtual CC from bitcoin2cc.com. Anyone have experience using this service? I haven't seen any negative reports in this forum about them. I clicked the link to purchase one of the virtual CC's and it takes you to a page on mybitcoin.com where it asks you to send the bitcoins. This seems fine but there is a thread on this forum with people complaining that mybitcoin.com is a scam. From what I can tell these people lost their passwords and that is the reason they can't access their funds on mybitcoin.com, is that correct? I wouldn't be creating an account with them, just using them to send the bitcoins to bitcoin2cc. Is this safe? Are both of these sites legit?

Mybitcoin is legit. The Madhatter runs bitcoin2cc and I used to think he was good, but after buying from his site bitcoinsextoys.com and getting the free shipping (only shipping) which turns out to be 4-8 weeks (surprise) and not getting my package after 8 weeks I can't recommend doing business with him. In fairness I haven't used bitcoin2cc.
3591  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Suggest notation change in bitcoin clients on: July 10, 2011, 08:08:07 AM
Does uncleared usually mean that you cannot spend the money? Because you can technically spend 0/unc, but not in the GUI and you can spend 1/unc. Maybe it should just say 0 confirmations, 1 confirmation ... 6 confirmed, 7 confirmed....

As it is it seems like there is something magical about 6 when there is not.
3592  Economy / Economics / Re: MtGox creating money? on: July 10, 2011, 06:14:04 AM
Redeemable codes are fine. It's the irredeemable ones you should worry about.
3593  Economy / Economics / Re: If the bitcoin limit is reached. on: July 10, 2011, 05:46:45 AM
Won't the price for bitcoins become higher and higher?
I know it's going to take a while for it to reach the max, but when it does, what do you expect of the price?

Some people think so.  Wink
3594  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [IDEA] Bitcoin Dare. on: July 10, 2011, 05:43:06 AM
well I would think there would be a screening process.  Nothing dangerous.  No throwing molative coctails at Obama or anything. Maybe more like public humiliation.

Oh, well, I'm sure someone will do the real version eventually.  Tongue
3595  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hypothetical Bitcoin clone except backed by gold on: July 10, 2011, 05:41:39 AM
Maybe it's easy to store gold for .2%/yr until the gov charges you 2% inventory fees or extra blah blah tax, now you have to fight the government head on when they know where your gold is or break your promise.

We've done promises, screw that.
3596  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [IDEA] Bitcoin Dare. on: July 10, 2011, 05:34:52 AM
It's a good idea in the sense that I want to watch the videos, but bad in that some idiot is going to damage themselves and there are going to be 6924 articles about how Bitcoin will make you cut off your bits.
3597  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are you depending on firstbits.com? on: July 10, 2011, 05:32:16 AM
Unfortunately we recently discovered that our database (essentially a list of addresses and the block number in which they first appear) was missing part of several blocks. We took the site down to recheck the whole database and add some checks so that it can't happen again.

Does this mean our firstbits are no longer valid?

The vast majority and likely all that have been looked up are fine. If you happened to have an address that was very similar to one that was left out and your address was newer than the one left out then it could have given you a wrong firstbits.

I would be surprised if even one was given out incorrectly, but I recommend everyone recheck because it's not something you want to have wrong.
3598  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Many Here Wish to Remain Anonymous When Making Bitcoin Purchases? on: July 10, 2011, 05:05:05 AM
What I really don't like is having to remember the goddamn zipcode of the house I rented the last time I changed my debit card bank info in order to buy a pair of fucking socks.

I want to: Pay, give the address I want the thing (if it's a thing) shipped to.
3599  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sending/receiving a satoshi. on: July 10, 2011, 04:44:40 AM
If I ever get into mining I'll queue up all my non essential transactions and give them all .1337 and .666 and 3.14159265 fees.
3600  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sending/receiving a satoshi. on: July 10, 2011, 04:41:53 AM
You could mine a block yourself.  Cool
