My 2 nodes have been up for only 6 days and I've already covered the month's hosting fee on Vulture.

There's another reason why ill thought out schemes like dynamic coin thresholds are a bit mad.

Apart from making the concept of a masternode "unfungible" and therefore non-decentralised, many people sit and calculate their ROI based on long term hosting plans which can be up to 80% cheaper than purchasing hosting on an hourly basis.

Then the network shuts them down because it decided to set a new coin threshold so their income stops but they're still stuck with the hosting contract overhead.

Does anyone else have issues with keeping their MN online?  I have to issue a masternode start several times a day.  Just trying to see if it's just me or a common thing lately.
i had one of mine go down several hours ago.  flare said the deamon died. he fixed it immediately and i had to do the "masternode start". first time that has ever happened in my several months of running mn's.

the only way I see letting the market decide how much SPR a node would cost would work is if once you buy a node, you aren't held to that coin level.

for instance price for SPR node = 1000 SPR, you buy it and you now own the node. 2 weeks later the price of a node goes to 1200 SPR. you would still have your node because you already funded it but anyone new would have to pay the 1200. Or alternatively, 2 weeks later the price of a node goes to 800 SPR. Well you still have your node but anyone new would only pay the 800.

I think this would be the only way it would work without completely screwing all previous node owners if SPR per node went up.

But this would present a whole new level of problems tracking what node was purchased when and for how much and such.

I'll stick with DRK. Better Dev team, better overall plan.

[...]Spreadcoin [...] the number of coins required for a masternode be determined by market forces: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=715435.msg10076444#msg10076444

I think the idea itself is brilliant (hey, I LOVE self-regulating systems), but it's not a good idea for Darkcoin.

Right now, an institution (Government, some billionaire, some agency) can buy whatever they want number of Masternodes and there are still "free" Masternodes owned by you and me to secure the anonymity.

If driven by market-force, they could buy-out EVERYONE else and get 100% control.
The variable you're forgetting here is the desire of Darkcoin holders to make a profit.  Both Spreadcoin and Darkcoin are at the mercy of the almighty deep pocket government agency as the more the price of the coin goes up, the greater temptation to sell your masternode coins.  Everyone has a price.
Yes, everyone has a price, but one of the beauties of DRK is that once one has acquired a MN (and I have a long way to go Cry Cry) The return on that MN pretty much guarantees its ongoing existence, and works against its liquidation. Those who are living entirely hand-to-mouth will not pursue a MN. Those such as myself, who do only slightly better, can see hope of getting one in a year or two, and have a fixed target to aim at. Even if a price rise takes direct purchase out of reach, the return on the MN shares I have been able to get thus far assure my eventual achievement. If I understand what is being proposed for Spread, I could never have such assurance, and therefore would never make such a longterm commitment to try to hit such a moving target. Once I achieve my goal, the higher the price of DRK, the more precious my MN will become, and the less likely I will be to liquidate it. I suspect the same will hold for my heirs.

In addition, along the lines of Tokenormal's comments, I see encouraging the turnover of MN's as being major security issue. One can assume that Neither DRK nor Spread, are much of a blip on Nation/State radars; that blip will grow, and it will only be later that budgets are freed to address the "threat." By that point not only will MN's be more expensive, but in DRK's case they will be well established and "aged." New MNs will be less and less available meaning the network will be more and more secure.

As a student of economics, I have no doubt that Evan has worked out the supply/demand curves for MNs vs holding/spending coins at various returns. If I remember correctly he is aiming for a balance point of around 3,000 MNs. Given the divisible nature of the coins, I can imagine an economy asymptoticly approaching 21,000 MNs. This of course is the theoretical maximum, and even under those ludicrous conditions MN holders become the elite of the world who would never under any condition sell. In a "Spread" economy, that decision would not even be in the holders control, guaranteeing a world where the rich get richer and sincere honest players are at their mercy.

Peace to you all...

A New Darkcoin Charity

I have the great pleasure of announcing the creation of a new charity: The Rava World Conservation.

I would like to thank the Darkcoin development team for making this possible by creating such a wonderful coin. I would also like to thank the people involved in areas other than core development. I see their true passion and commitment every day.

The Rava World Conservation will operate Darkcoin masternodes. The charity will assign and distribute proceeds of these nodes to every child that is born.

Y nodes will assign Darkcoin (DRK) to each child. This coin will then be placed into X nodes which serve to increase the original allocated amount over time, ensuring that each person will have a reliable and sustainable source of Darkcoin to use during the course of their life.

Z nodes will serve to protect the habitats we live in as well as the life that shares them with us.

One day every single person on Earth will own Darkcoin, that is simple math.

The white paper can be found in the details section of the website. Individual percentages are variable to allow for increased allocation to specific growth areas (classes of nodes) if this is ever deemed necessary for sustainable development.

Please let me know if you find any mistakes and I will strive to correct them promptly. If you have any questions you can email me at raphael@ravawc.org or send a letter to my attention at the charity mailing address. We welcome your support and it will be a pleasure to answer you in kind.

Thank you to all who have made this possible. I would also like to send a special thanks to the private member from the Darkcoin community who helped with the website. Sometimes the silent heroes make as great a mark as those who howl.

Let there be Darkcoin!

But that's exactly how DRK works right now if you look at it from a BTC or fiat market perspective.

Fiat is the market everyone is playing to - in other words the market in which the entire crypto-economy is currently valued. The coin threshold isn't so much the "price" of a masternode but a technical property of the network. Markets value that technical property accordingly in terms of other currencies - principally BTC and USD.

If you make it a technical property of the node as opposed to the network then nodes are no longer homogeneous (or as I've previously called it 'fungible' to borrow a financial term). It's the fact that Darkcoin's nodes are homogenious in this respect that makes them decentralised because if I want to extend the masternode population I just have to reproduce a common network property as opposed to a specific node property. That gives the network redundancy because big holders cannot "hijack" this network property (the coin threshold for masternodes) in order to exclude small holders from supporting the node population. (I use 'big' and 'small' as relative terms here obviously).

In some ways it's like the double-spend problem. Big holders cannot prevent small ones from spending their holdings, no matter how big their stash is. Technical properties of the network enforce this rule. So it should be with all network infrastructure including masternodes.

There's nothing in that which prevents masternodes from being appropriately valued by markets.

I one word : with the SPR system, the MN network can be manipulate really more easily!
Also with the current SPR price, a MN need to be rewarned of ~ 40 SPR only to cover the VPS price hosting.
So for the moment nothing really exciting (maybe expt the solo mining only but in case of really  high hash rate not sure it's really so great).

This is big news for DRK.

The other news worth keeping an eye on is the USA showing signs of allowing sports betting online. Would be interested to see how the special interest groups (mainly casino operators) in the usa will be appeased.

Yikes. So it is.

Every rise is just being used as a cushion for dumping now. Even the die-hards must be getting despondent.

It just dropped below the all time low of November 2013. The 1-week MACD indicates it's headed for plummet territory.

Hey Tao, not sure who is running this cafepress store but just FYI they are a rip off. If you want a better store check out http://teespring.com/ - They have high quality zero upfront costs and basically no risk, they also ship merchandise directly to the buyer. (all that right from the front page of their site). Whoever is running that store should take a look, cafepress is dinosaur.
