No seriously, why would anyone need to hide their IP address from their financial transactions?

To prevent the giant NSA database from knowing every last piece of information to connect every last dot.

http://nsa.gov1.info/utah-data-center/

So let me get this straight.

Every machine on the inter web has a unique identifier.

Just as you would address a letter to send in the mail, computers use the unique identifier to send data to specific computers on the inter web.

So if I send transactions out and people can see my IP, they know who I am, and can track my spending?

Yes, they can track your spending.  They will also add the following to your profile by using that IP:

Medical history,
Online chats,
Browsing history, etc.

Then they can analyze "you" by analyzing your profile and the profiles of all your contacts.  Anything you can do to throw a spanner wrench into this process will help you sleep better at night.

No seriously, why would anyone need to hide their IP address from their financial transactions?

Because we want to be... anonymous.

But why?

Because your ip address goes directly to your internet connection, ie, your house, place of work, etc...  So even if your wallet address isn't traceable, you are still exposing your ip address to the network.  If someone is recording that information, they can follow a payment directly from you to the person you paid's address.  This information is not being recorded on the block chain, and it would take someone on the network logging this information to get it while it's happening, but still, we don't want any holes because holes get ripped open after a while. Smiley

"Just as you would address a letter to send in the mail, computers use the unique identifier to send data to specific computers on the inter web. "

Yup, just a call to your iSP and they can ask who had this IP address at this time on this day, and they can say exactly who Smiley

So hiding your IP address is a good idea, when you're sending money around the inter web?

Depends on whether or not you value your privacy and whether or not you have the know-how to achieve it. The lack of easy to use Bitcoin transaction obfuscation makes achieving true privacy/anonymity much harder. It's easy to leak information along the way that can be used to identify you, through change handling, address linking, and not routing client information correctly through TOR or a VPN.

Because it doesn't matter. To be private/anonymous you need to obfuscate BOTH, the originating IP address AND the coins in the wallet. One without the other gives you the same result - a loss of privacy.

Also it's a Bitcoin clone and doesn't offer anything besides a quicker block time and different hashing algorithm. What you are wanting is actual, tangible innovation, which is not what Litecoin offers (in my opinion).

This is the wrong place to ask, as this is the DarkCoin thread.  Try asking here:

Agreed, especially since things have been changing so much.  I mean, just the fact that the mixing happens first makes you have to reset your mind on what's happening to the coins. Cheesy

Well, that doesn't sound right. Charles Lee wouldn't allow that to happen. That could put people in danger? Do you have your facts straight?
