Why?

I think it might have been around the checkpointing and at the time defending the attacks we were having

The Windows 64bit blockchain.bin  ( http://monero.cc/downloads/blockchain/win/blockchain.bin )  is 44 days old, so much for "always updated and current"...

My hope is that they plan to bring to life the new type of blockchain quite soon.
Maybe that's the reason?

There are two reasons. One is that we froze the blockchain download after the first attack to maintain a constant verifiable hash. The second is the new self-verifying download format you mention being almost done.

For now you if you download the file you will need to sync up 1-2 months of blocks using the normal mechanism.

What was said in the previous post. Also, we'll probably update it when we finally get the new Windows binaries ready.

I suggest as marketing activity:  that (all) Monero supporters with account status "Sr. Member" or higher ("Hero Members", "Legendary") set an Monero realated "Personal Text" of their choice, as decent advertising.

Like saddambitcoin https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=53193 and I have.

I am sure it would improve Moneros image and publicity on this board very much, if hero members like e.g. "binaryFate" or "nioc" would have/use an Monero "Personal Text" tagline.

Hero members and legendardy members are respected and trusted, their positive perceived image would transfer to Moneros brand image (and increase publicity).

I'm not sure whether it may have some implications like corrupted data on crash or something, but I've tested killing the daemon while syncing, and starting it up again, and it continued without any trouble from where it left before killing it.

Killing the process likely wouldn't cause database corruption with those options, but a system crash or power failure or program error could.

The only side-effect I've noticed so far, is that it instantly allocates 16GB to data.mdb, but it makes it incredibly faster.

Might be a sparse file, I'm not sure (meaning the unused portions of the file wouldn't actually use disk space).

As marketing it is not meant bitcointalk forum. Here at least the ones that care of altcoins mostly already know of Monero.
For average bitcointalk altcoin user. current database and simple wallet or unofficial GUI is good enough. and if they would want would already have some Moneros.
But other crypto sites, or just technology sites, or just everywhere they dont. Few coins made it well in that direction.
Doge and Apple Byte  lately did it well. Probably few pump and dump coins did some marketing also. Also Darkcoin is quite known. But big majority of coins live just here on this forum and few exchanges.

shiny marketing without solid foundation...  Cheesy smells like just another pump and dump...

https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/anoncoin-price-continues-trend/

btw if anyone is interested... http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=a_massive_investigation_of_instamines_and_fastmines_for_the_top_alt_coins

"Looking at this data, we see that Darkcoin was mined with 500 DRK generated per block from the get go. From block 1 to at least block 3250, according to their blockchain, they were still producing 500 coins each block. The transition from 500 to 277 coins per block occurs between 3250 and 3500 but this author did not see the necessity of getting the exact moment of halving. Simple math shows that 3250 blocks multiplied by 500 coins a block is 1,625,000 Darkcoins created between the times of 3:54 and 11:22 on January 19th, 2014. As of today there are around 4,300,000 DRK in existence, making this a pretty hefty instamine. The Darkcoin website expects around 22,000,000 DRK to be created. That means in less than 8 hours, almost 5% of the Darkcoins that ever will be created spawned in that 1/3 of a day. It's safe to say Darkcoin has left it's investors in the dark on this one."

for monero supporters try to look up monero, you'll be pleased... Smiley

"There are no instantmines or premines in Monero. The smooth block subsidy scheme could be a little bit more tapered towards a slower distribution than it is, but ultimately this coin passes the smell test."

Although I am only a full member, I added a signature. I agree with your statements and I find this a very good initiave. I would advise other members to put something in their signature as well.

I own a small amount of XMR (Because I can't afford more), some of it mined. I don't care about current price. I have a small setup that gives me almost free electricity, so as far as I care, I'm buying monero with electricity, and also suporting the network.

Then again, my less than 1k hashrate is just a drop in the pond; where is all the hashrate coming from?

Marketing Monero to the general public is not encouraged at the moment. Developers want the marketing to start after the most important fundamentals (GUI, RPC-API, ...) are developed and stable.

Monero will not fail because of bad marketing. I know of multiple people with academic and professional marketing background in Monero community, e.g. core team member "David Latapie" has a marketing background.

I guarantee: We will have good marketing strategy, concept and plan, when developers are ready.

Would you rather have a tested coin with solid code and fair release, or an instamined coin that will most likely be a victim of its own marketing when its first real test is the FBI breaking its code and sending some darkweb operators (very publicly) to clink?

From other miners.  Cool

1k x 1000 = 1M x 20 = 20M

I prefer a tested coin with solid code base. I dont understand why you ask me. I didnt pushed for marketing.
I think you confuse me with another/other poster(s) pushing for marketing.

Since my involvement with bitcoin, I've come to think the worse the photoshops the highest the chances of success. Thank you!  Cheesy

Monero's privacy and therefore fungibility are MUCH stronger than Bitcoin's.
This makes Monero a better candidate to deserve the term "digital cash".
