What gives Viacoin value ? XCH has value, but is Viacoin not simply the conduit for Clearinghouse and as such, does it need a market value (per unit rather than as a whole system) ?
That is like saying XCP (counterparty) or MSC (mastercoin) have value and BTC does not. Think carefully. Both XCP and MSC are also embedded consensus systems. Sorry, I am still not seeing it....BTC has value because it is a spendable currency. I probably am not properly understanding the way the embedded consensus works...Please can you explain how Clearinghouse adds to the unit value of Viacoin ?

And viacoin is also a spendable currency. I cannot buy anything with Viacoin. It is a cryptocurrency, but I don't see what distinguishes it, in terms of unit value, from hundreds of other coins. The system is needed for XCH, but not the individual units of VIA (please correct me if I am wrong) Bitcoin had a large distribution and had become established as a medium of exchange before it was used for embedded carriers like XCP.

I cannot buy anything with Viacoin.
I can buy lots of things with viacoin already, even though it's just a couple of months old. From webhosting, subways in Germany (I think), train tickets in the UK and a whole bunch of other things.

OK. Thanks for the reply. I won't ask the question again. I think what I am trying to show you is that value is all about perception, even down to gold. There is no such thing as "intrinsic value" for anything. You might not value a glass of water right now, certainly wouldnt be willing to pay $1000 for a glass of it. But if you were dying of thirst in the desert, literally hours from death, you would probably be willing to pay it. You'd probably part with your gold rings for it. At that point, water is more valuable than gold (to you). So it goes for crypto-currencies. Even bitcoin isn't that spendable at the moment, and the general public are still pretty cautious of it. I personally know plenty people who wont touch bitcoin with a barge pole. I value bitcoin, you value it, but they do not. So the point is, these value judgements are utterly subjective, yet, over time, as more and more people view digital currencies as valuable, the collective perception builds such that people begin to value bitcoin, litecoin, dogecoin(!), viacoin. Viacoin is accepted by some business already and about 95% of the time on the first page by trade volume on Bittrex, mean that there are people who value it. There are lots of people holding viacoin too. Put all this together and it means there is a collective perception of value, and it how value is established. New digital currencies have a very very tough time surviving, there is no doubt about that. Viacoin has done really well so far, when most new coins pretty much die in the first 4 weeks. Remember bitcoin was worthless for a long time: very few people had the perception of value. That changed over time, and with any luck, it will continue to grow - or, other systems will come about that people value more and bitcoin will fade. That's a real possibility - just think of Myspace and Facebook...

Drak, Nice explanation on perceived value, although I'm sure you realize this isn't a crapshoot. If your technology solves an important problem that has never been solved before, it will be MASSIVELY valuable. If I'm reading you correctly, you appear to be aiming very high with VIA and XCH, which is great! I highly recommend Peter Thiel's brand new book "Zero to One" (I have it on audiobook, and the narrator is pretty good) Zero to One is about creating something that has never existed before, whereas 1 to n is just "horizontal innovation". Thiel also talks about how the future isn't random for engineers and designers with a clear vision and mission - you can create the future. Please read the book - it will put you on a clear path to success...keep-up the good work, buddy

Since blockchains are all about proof-of-publication, they can potentially be used to prove ownership of a real world asset. For example, you could notorize a patent and hash that into the blockchain without revealing the patent unless you need to prove later that you we're first.
