Styrofoam, paper, clothing, hair plastic bags...those are about the worst static generators...also to people who run these things on static bags...they are conductive (otherwise, they wouldn't form a Faraday cage).

all depends on the bag type. most of the "cage" type bags are layered in plastic, so you will not create a circuit loop, aka no metal is exposed.

also you would want a humidifier for that. ESD is more prevalent in rooms with very low humidity. dry air breeds friction.

i like the guy who said one of the worst things to put a motherboard on is metal. do you have an acrylic case by chance?

It gives me a sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach to see so many miners, the backbone of the Bitcoin network, using Windows as an OS.

it should sicken you much more to see some of the hodge podge "rigs" people are using to provide the power to the network.  Some of these are unsuitable for even simple hardware testing and people are running 1000W through them 24x7 and have 4 cards at 80C+ without any worries

The hardware is much more alarming than the OS choice. 

The reason that does not bother me as much is that a hardware failure would necessarily be localized, but security vulns have a history of propagating rapidly through Windows.

It seems to me that people who upgraded their normal computer with extra GPUs to mine run windows, while the dedicated mining boxes use one of the linux-on-a-stick miners.   After all, a harddrive is an unnecessary expense when a thumbdrive is all you need.

Finally got my 4th 5830 working on this miner !  Got a great rack/shelf unit for $4.99 at target.  It was in the kitchen utilities section   Cards sit nicely on the rack with the pcie connector going through.

4 6870 cards been running for about a month non stop.  cooled with a tornado fan (blows from one window, through the case and out another window)  case is fully enclosed with plexi to reduce fan noise and increase air flow and pressure

I moved my miners out to the garage yesterday because without central air the AC wasn't able to keep the basement cool. With folding I keep my farm inside and shutdown in the summer because of electricity cost but since mining covers the electricity, I needed a new location. I had to pull 30m of Cat5 underground through some conduit that had been thoughtfully pre-installed and then re-terminate it to get an internet connection out there. It's a detached and un-insulated garage/storage/work space so I ended up hanging my boxen from the ceiling on shelves. I put a switch up there and a power bar and use VNC to keep an eye on them. It's nice having them out of the way but it is pretty hot up there so I had to twist tie four 2000+rpm 120mm fans around each GPU stack. I can put a 120mm fan pulling directly out of the cards exhausts because I don't use dummy plugs and instead VNC in and tell windows to pretend there is a monitor on each cards VGA output. The cards still hit 80C with the fans at 70% because the air temp is 35C+ at that height and with no air circulation in the building. I think I will add a small box fan to get some air from near the floor up to them. There are two towers, one is a striped down Lian Li PC-A05 and the other is a small Antec mid tower. Each has 3 GPU's all squished together on old high-end EVGA motherboards left over from folding. The short Lian Li has two 5830's with a 6850 sandwiched in between on a Thermaltake 750W PSU. The Antec tower has an unlocked 6950, a 5850 and a 5830 from top to bottom on a crappy Nexus 1100W gold unit. Altogether it is about 1.7Ghash and probably works out to a bit over a kilowatt. I might purpose build a 4x5770 rig now I have the heat taken care of and I'm off school for the summer but I have to check over if it's even feasible with the price staying under $20.

They sit pretty securely w\ the cooler on one of the rails of the rack.  Only lean if there's tension on the extender cable

what are you using as a remote power switch? and can you link the watchdog software or whatever that is?

i'm using the standard linux software watchdog http://linux.die.net/man/8/watchdog to check against the miner logfile change-datetime-stamp (i redirected the miner output to a logfile). if there is no change for 5 min (crash) than the watchdog daemon will reboot (softreboot)

furthermore i check from the main server the status of each miner, if ssh is not responding, than i do a hard reset via my remote power switch. this remote power switch is a very high sophisticated thing ;-) it is a serial relais card with 8 relais, powering the main power switch of every minerrig - so in case the software watchdog is not rebootiing or to slow and the ssh login to the miner is timing out or rejected than the main server power off for 5 sec. and power on again. (hardreboot)

since i'm running diskless with a live image(LinuxCoin) via networkboot, the hardreboot is not a problem at all.
this setup works great for me, so i can push my setup to the limit and tweak around ... and unfortunately the server room is 10km away

Anyway are you networkbooting the nodes from different folders containing LinuxCoin versions for each one of them or you're using one with script that makes changes based on the current node's MAC address/cpu number?

i'm booting all rig's into the same LC image, however at boottime i'm mounting a dedicated nfs share, where i have the configurations, scripts, etc
