Shorts are out in force today. They're borrowing about 3,000 XMR from me. Probably the ones at 0.00144. I'd guess a total of 12k are being lent ATM. If anybody wants to squeeze them, LMK and I'll pull my the rest of my coins off the lending and Sell markets. Looking at the 3 min, seems like a lot of dumping last night and a lot of asks placed lower. Bid side is a bit damaged, hopefully it will recover (perhaps some bids are riding on another pump). Thus far we managed to hold the support at the lower 140ks. You can thank me for part of it. Learnt my lesson last year, but this community and coin is about making money and not giving it value (yes it's kinda dubious). Will buy back around 105k (even if it takes a few weeks to get there, and it will, because not enough people believe it as a store of value). I suspect the community is very small also, all they do is pick fights in other threads, social media etc and even real vendors called them out for it despite being warned for the last 2 years about this negative strategy. Look at the alt section now, 10s of Ethereum threads but there is no complaint from the trolls even though ICO is a complete scam objetive regardless of the tech. Why? Just because this coin was launched in a fair manner and the tech is best in class is not enough. On top of that the community is full of posers dumping on each other.

New Monero community project was announced earlier on the ANN thread, might be of interest here. INTRODUCING THE MONERODO OS http://nodebox.link/What is it? Monerodo is a portmanteau (because I love them and love that word) of Monero and Node (well, esperanto for node). Now you can take any old PC and turn it into a monero node, monero pool server, and nvidia miner. Instructions on the website. Its not a GUI... but its not CLI either!!!! Follow link for more info Very cool, brilliant idea. Has anyone verified if the code is safe to hold significant amount of Monero as a wallet?

Well, for better or worse, I don't have the skills to either 1) code that into the monerodo or 2) detect whether one of the open source things that is part of the monerodo had anything unsafe. Its just an amalgam of open source stuff nicely packaged. Ubuntu, monero core, cryptonote pool miner, tsivs ccminer, ajenti, apache, nodeJS (forever), all packaged with respin (new remastersys). I setup "Fail2Ban for SSH Login Protection". Security updates are automatic. The non-security updates don't automatically update, because the nvidia driver update always messes up the nvidia miner. Its got a firewall enabled except for the minimum ports needed. The rest of the stuff on: https://github.com/lfit/itpol/blob/master/linux-workstation-security.mdhttps://www.linode.com/docs/security/securing-your-serverseemed overkill. Ultimately, what you *can* do is get your node going using the monerodo thing, and then run simplewallet on your PC that you really trust... then the only thing the monerodo could do is intercept RPC calls...

[Monerodo OS]
Has anyone verified if the code is safe to hold significant amount of Monero as a wallet?
By its nature it is not cold storage so I would recommend for long term storage of a significant amount, use a proper paper wallet instead. To store some coins that are needed online, probably a reasonable approach being a stripped down OS with some effort taken to secure it.

Almost to the point where they appear to take sides of scam coins like Dash, Ethereum, zcash etc? What purpose does it serve to have noname, nogood, totallyshit scumbags like that French guy attached to an important project like this one? Why are some of them always peddling other shitcoins on the side?

Am I imagining things or has there been a shitload of Monero developments in the past week? An OS, new communities, 32-bit binaries, a tentative new GUI commit, and to top it all off the Nick Szabo article (just kidding about that last one). 2016 is looking great, and I've been talking it up so much that people in real life are even mentioning it by name these days.

I'm a person in real life... haven't heard anything on the news or anyone chatting up about Monero in my neck of the woods, lol. Actually, come to think about it, I don't even think I've heard my self even say the word "Monero" to anyone else. *sigh* ... I need to work on my anxiety of talking to people about cryptocurrency. People in the Bible Belt "don't take too kindly to no 'apocalyptic', NWO, terrorist funding moneys 'round here". It's alright though, Monero is still in it's infant stage... but don't worry, because in a couple months or so we'll reach our "terrible 2's"

I remember when I was young, learning programming on my own and having nobody to talk to about it at school. My biggest fear for a while was "how the hell do people pronounce 'c++' ? Do they only say '+' once? Or really twice? But twice is repetitive, if wrong I'll sound stupid". At least with monero it can't really go wrong.

Monero's privacy and therefore fungibility are MUCH stronger than Bitcoin's. This makes Monero a better candidate to deserve the term "digital cash".

I tried to stay far away from here to avoid that conflict and just post my noobness on reddit, but, I've gotten to the point where I really don't care anymore

This is all about a nice mix of computer science and finance/economy. Plus some sociology. And probably other disciplines I might not be able to even name. Everyone is a newb in at least one of those disciplines when entering the crypto/blockchain space.

I will e-mail you a file named monero.exe Just run it and it will explain everything, ok? Windows might create some pop-ups, but that is just the cryptologic complexity of Monero scaring and confusing poor little Windows. Just ignore it. . . . . Just kidding. Keep learning and make sure you spread any cryptocoins you have among a variety of sources. If you are new, perhaps store a third in the best online service you can find (even if that is an exchange), a third on your own private cold address, and a third on a client-side web app like MyMonero. That way you avoid the risk of total Gox'ing or getting directly hacked. Sure we'd all like to have private air-gapped Faraday Cage computers with cold addresses on them, but not everyone is so savvy. As well, mistakes can happen and people can lose/forget their pneumonic seeds. My proposal ensures you will likely lose some Monero at some point in your life, while also making sure you won't lose all of it.
