But I cannot pay the bills with months between blocks - I just am not that large or have pockets that deep - sadly. I am also at my lowest hashrate ever right now, having just around 64 TH total. I hope to be back over 100 TH before the end of the year and hopefully up to 200 TH by the halving.
That's right, and the only way to regularly get payouts is to be with a bigger pool. Back to size we go. I didn't say miners are doing the wrong thing by sticking with size, it's just a catch 22 that makes small pools even smaller. There is no way to make small pools work in the current climate any more. No one is going to move to a small pool unless they believe in the principle and don't care about the risk, and only small miners can do this. The only way to start up a new pool is if you already have a mining conglomerate planned to dump their hashrate there so usually the pool and the miners are the one entity. The small personal home miners are dead, completely and utterly dead. The remainder of you guys that are doing it are unbelievably persistent and I salute you, but nothing can rescue mining from this situation any more, except for bitcoin falling to below $100 again causing all the big miners and mining companies to go bankrupt. None of us want that to happen to bitcoin's value (except all-in shitcoiners and forkedshitcoiners, although they don't realise that if bitcoin dies, all shitcoins die even more.) That's why, to be honest, I'm surprised I still have miners on my two pools. If you all left, I'd quietly shut them down without any regrets, but I'd feel bad for the people on ckpool.org that have been hanging in there waiting for the next block. But bitcoin has been good to me, and I'm maintaining them as a service back to the community if you want me to continue.

Thank you for all you have done for the community. That said the bitcoin block find method does not seem fare, highest pool hashrate win the majority. Why can they not make a method that selects pools at random to evenly distribute the blocks between pools, no matter the hash-rates? They may have or may now, just make sure its a sha256 coin please and ckpool gets it first! ;-) Im a home miner, playing the impossible lottery it seems. I choose ckpool because its stratum server is not consistently changing the diff but does sometimes very rarely, many other pools do not have that. Just wanted to thank you sincerely for your investments trying to help others like us.

Why can they not make a method that selects pools at random to evenly distribute the blocks between pools, no matter the hash-rates? Proof of work is bitcoin's greatest strength and its greatest Achilles heel. There is no fair way to do what you ask. Even a completely redesigned proof mechanism that attempts to do what you ask would be exploitable. This has been debated to death since its inception by much smarter people than me.

well, as long as I can make a small profit and even if i go negative - as long as its not extreme negative - each month, I will keep on going. I quit mining back in '11 and I kick myself every day for that. I wont be quitting this go around I may even dump all my hash either here or at kano after the first until halving. we shall see.

It makes no difference to your chance of finding a block if you do both during the same difficulty period. However, you get to watch and hope for longer with the lower hashrate

Basically when we did big team rentals we had 5btc and blocks were 25 coins we tried to get close to correct $ per th rental and if you are close enough to that 5 btc is 5/25 or a 1 in 5 shot at a block. 10 of us would put in .5 coins we once hit 2 blocks in 90 minutes and turned 5 coins into 50. but that was a long time ago. if you get a rental at 0.0000189 a th you are close to the correct rate. so 0.189 btc which is more then 1500 usd gives you about .189/12.5 shot to hit it. that is about 1/66 shot if you spend that much. It is why this pool struggles most of us do not want to drop 1500usd on a 66 to 1 shot I am swinging away here with a 2 board s9 see below: http://solo.ckpool.org/users/146UJM5kgzLVUV23CXCf33KQKHckoX1gx3

Maybe 12 people put in 0.1 or something like that. I dont have a problem setting something like this up. At that rate, we can rent about 50 phs for a little over 11 hours of mining. I have done many previous solo runs with Nicehash, but open to whomever. LMK if anyone is interested.
