1262  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Reply a number between 1 and 10 for a 0.001 BTC tip on: January 10, 2015, 06:55:41 PM
last active OP is 3 hour ago but they dont reply or give a giveaway...
this is scam or no?

Probably had to handle personal real life stuff? you should give him time at least 24 hrs to respond.

No need to rush into accusations unless its been already 24hrs without a response.

Edit: Op, if you are done giving out your btc, you should close the thread.

I agree with you. But he has been online multiple times everyday and his last post was 3 days ago, and that too in a different thread, not this one.

I smell rat.

0.001 BTC is not a great amount to gain or lose, but it's a matter of ethics.
1263  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitstamp 18,000 bitcoins stolen? -confirmed on: January 10, 2015, 06:05:30 PM
OK, so after BitStamp was hacked, people have been posting posts over posts and threads over threads about it and even making scam accusations about the exchange. Some even called it the next Gox. But all of a sudden all threads have gone silent after the exchange came back online just fine, within a small time window.

No problem.

At least I would take this opportunity to actually give some postive feedback to BitStamp team who worked hard and delivered on my personal expectations after the hack. They made sure to keep the users informed of the progress via Twitter too. And they surely didn't "Gox". I have an account with them and thankfully I didn't lose anything because I had emptied my balance in September but in future I'm gonna trust them as good as I did previously - or even more than that, because I'm sure their security is now far better than what they had before. And they mean serious business.

They're here to stay and make Bitcoin ecosystem better.

Since you brought it up:
1.  The "small window" was a business week.
2.  No confirmed fiat withdrawals.
3.  No [previously promised] audits => fractional reserve possible.
4.  Re. "better security":  As long as you're sure.

TL;DR: Let's not start stroking them just yet.

1. OK, but does it matter? They need their time, if it's a busines wekk or not
2. Let's wait until working business day - Monday
3. Agree with you - I have no idea

4. I'm believing in this:

Updates to the exchange service include a migration to Amazon's AWS cloud infrastructure, new hardware systems and the integration of BitGo's multi-signature wallet technology.

Might be wrong but i don't think OP is giving away that 1mbtc tip any longer.

I suspect same, it was probably a scam effort to promote his website.

He has been online frequently everyday, but hasn't responded in this thread and has not tipped any accounts in past few days, so I guess this was the ultimate motive - tip some accounts and reap the benefits of publicity.
1265  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitstamp hack. A real life test of anonymity in Bitcoin on: January 10, 2015, 05:49:14 PM
He could easyly meet buyers who wants to buy bitcoins anonymously for using in the deep webs or hiding assets.

Bitcoin is terrible if talking about hiding assets and thats why it will never be used in the deep webs. Untraceable technologies like Monero are far better fit for privacy needs

Sorry, but Bitcoin can be as anonymous as other so-called anonymous coins if used properly.

Bitcoins can be traced back to an 'address' but after all it is impossible to figure out who owns the address if the owner has enough caution to cover his tracks.
coins purchased via exchanges can be tracable if exchange requires strict KYC, but mined coins have no suc limitation. A miner gets his reward and can use any address to spend them, making it impossible to link these coins to a person.

Newer technologies like Dark Wallet and coin mixers are making it even easier than before.

Kudos to team BitStamp.

I'm sure many of you won't agree with me, but this is just my opinion, and you have yours.
1267  Economy / Speculation / Re: The first prediction/playgame for 2015 on: January 10, 2015, 05:11:54 PM
Even though the bitstamp was hacked and BTC180,000 stolen, the price not break but rise a bit

They lost less than 19000 BTC. I'm not sure where you got the 180,000 figure.

Also, given the past performance of the exchange, I see no point to panic. They will address this in a proper way and your money is not going anywhere.
bitstamp said them lost less than 19,000 BTC
and any news said that over 18,000 BTC

i just take an intermediate step

almostly every news are saying they had lost 18000 btc

Anyone who is not able to read a difference between 18,000 and 180,000 doesn't qualify for an argument.

So I'll just pass this one.
1268  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to trade with profit. on: January 10, 2015, 03:47:34 PM
In most cases whem there is a pump an dump situation, the one who uses emotions who loses. If you are following the coin properly, you know wen some great news are approaching, so you can get in.

But most of the time what people do is look at the spike in the price and think it is a great opportunity to double their investment - and then they end up losing.

The key is to get in early at th beginning of the pump and not being too greedy (getting out on time without waiting for the ultimate top.price)

Just recovered an old zero balance wallet belonging to myself... if anyone is interested ?

Re: I am the poorest early adopter in the world...

This reminds me of a few stories: the 10,000 BTC pizza, the 7500 BTC HDD in the dump yard and the student who made fortune by recovering 5000 BTC from an old HDD.

If it is of any help to you, I would say the address isn't worthless though.
You can claim free CLAM coins on it Tongue

The End.

Thanks, it was a good read, and I hate Bob!
You make some cool effort to keep us away from alt-coin scams.

I just have one complaint though: I was 30 yrs old when I started reading that; and when finished, I was 36.
1272  Other / Off-topic / Re: Don't try to format a partition of the usb on: January 09, 2015, 10:19:45 AM
Because it will format the whole drive. I learned this last night while I tried to do just that and I lost some alt-coin paperwallets.pdfs that I was planning to print out later, roughly around $10.

So learn from my mistake and I'll try to do the same.

$10 is not a very big amount to learn a good lesson, so you should consider yourself lucky.
You're lucky you didn't have a BTC wallet in there, just some alt-coins.

I usually keep a separate USB drive for storing my wallets and do not use it for anything else - they're not costly anyway.

If you have time and you're inclined to, there are some recovery softwares that let you recover data from formatted storage media. Just google.

Next, please reply a number between 1 and 10 and I'll send you a link with 0.001BTC preloaded.

Also, usually a BTC address or a site account is used for tipping. Here he didn't ask for any. But since he mentioned the main thread of his site, we assume he will tip on your SafeDICE account.
1274  Economy / Speculation / Re: The crash continues, dead cat bounce. on: January 09, 2015, 08:54:30 AM
Well that was a nice bounce eh?
We will continue to slide down with about 3-6% per day for the upcoming days, possibly with a hard crash to close the weekend ($100-$175).

What technical indicators have you based that prediction on? I doubt we will go that low by the weekend.

1275  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to trade with profit. on: January 09, 2015, 08:52:34 AM
When I say "shitcoins" I don't mean if they're good or bad since that's not upto me to judge any coin. I'm specifically talking about volatility. If a coin jumps around from 1 sat to 150 sat within few hours I put it as shitcoin in my list and I trade it with extreme caution.

Anything that doesn't move at the speed of light and gives you little profit is not shit and majority of the time I'm just looking for dip so I can get in and take my profit when it goes back to its original position.

You make some good point. I've also traded with emotion in past to join the pump rally and have lost a bit.

But then I learned my lesson and I just look for the stable coins and wait for the dip. Sometimes it takes longer than I expect and teh volume isn't much, but small profit is better than a loss.
1276  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: lightweight wallet ?? on: January 09, 2015, 06:33:27 AM
What is a good bitcoin wallet software to use that's light weight and not going to take up 20GB of space and  I can import my BTC wallets into it using import privkey.

Anyone got any good recommendations on what one to use other than to use an online wallet lick blockchain.

I am using MultiBit; it's fast and lightweight. Also since it downloads the block header only, syncing is very fast.

You can also import private keys easily.
1277  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is there anything worth buying? on: January 09, 2015, 06:01:04 AM
So I'll have about $1K that I want to put towards bitcoin investment or generation of bitcoins somehow.  I've parted out my gpu rigs but am still interested in a mining aspect.  I've looked into cloud mining and some rigs that are coming out.

Mostly, the advice I've gotten is to just buy bitcoin.  But I want to do something that would be more enduring.

Is there any gear that would be just as enticing as buying bitcoin right now?

You can split your investment 50% - 50% between Bitcoin and alt-coins.
Keep 50% in Bitcoin to be safe since alt-coins are comparatively risky.

Have a look at this, it gives some idea of promising alt-coins to invest in 2015:

I am new to virtual currency and looking to buy some. Am considering Litecoin, NXT, vertcoin and infinitecoin. Can someone please suggest me what would be a good option to start with ??

Much appreciate the help. Thanks Cheesy

It is really hard getting honest replies since most people want to promote the coins they're holding.

Do a bit of research by reading about developers of different alt-coins. Sure it will require some time but you'll be able to make informed decisions.

To start off, here's a good article about investing in crypto in 2015:
http://fuk.io/january-2015-report-best-altcoins-and-cryptos-to-mine-and-invest-in-for-high-profits/
Based on what I've seen, this list has much more credibility than what you've proposed yourself.
1280  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Can I move Bitcoin Core and my Armory Wallet? on: January 08, 2015, 12:50:44 PM
I FOUND SPACE! I deleted the Bootstrap.dat.old (21GB) file and now it's 31GB Bitcoin-qt and 25.2GB Armory. I will look into finding a way to move the files since you weren't that helpful. Thanks anyway...kinda.

Bitcoin-qt will look for the blockchain in specific (default) folder where it puts it, so I don't think you'd be able to move the blockchain to external HDD.

If you're too concerned about HDD space, try looking into MultiBit.
