1921  Economy / Reputation / Re: Bitcointalk Charity and its funds on: December 25, 2021, 02:26:01 PM
It's quite funny (in a cringe-inducing kind of way, I'm not trying to make light of this situation) how this compares to another incident recently where someone was accused of things and said "I was sick" and some people were outraged how the poor sick person was treated.

I've been sitting on the fence here (very uncomfortable) and honestly can't figure out what crwth is accused of. There were pictures provided of activities that seemed legit. I don't think the original thread promised detailed receipts.

That's not to say there isn't an issue with funds, or that there isn't a communication problem, but it looks to me like there also was a failure to convey expectations to the organizers of this charity, either in advance or at least after those big donations were given. It's seems a bit disingenuous to demand receipts a year later.

IOTW it was possible (at last for crwth; not sure about the other two people involved) to be completely honest and follow the letter and the spirit of the charity thread and end up with a red tag/flag for it because he didn't do something that wasn't part of the deal. I think that's messed up. I will oppose the flag until and unless actual proof of misconduct is provided.
1922  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Confusing SPV server spies? on: December 25, 2021, 04:30:56 AM
In my opinion the best option still remains to be including more irrelevant addresses in your query somehow. For example your own client could ask bc1q6, bc1q8, bc1q2 balances where bc1q6, bc1q8 are not yours and then when spending from bc1q2 it broadcasts the tx to another node.

How do you know that the other node doesn't belong to the same evil spying entity?

Some S&M vibe going on here with that whip... sends a very clear message what will happen if you don't hold.

This is the big problem with electric cars: Once the powertrain warranty is out, the value of the car is pretty much zero. Gas engines can go 200k miles and can be fixed without a full replacement.

I remember in 2005 the roads were full of Gen 1 Priuses. Then they started to just disappear, and now I doubt anyone has seem one in years. Why? Battery pack blowing out and while you can swap it for a couple of thousand, most people just junked em.

It's a problem.

Not to defend Tesla here - horrible build quality and Musk is a smug asshole - but their batteries can last 200k-300k, I've seen quite a few with that mileage. And Model S is supposedly a luxury car that can do 0-60 in like 4 seconds, so that $22k should be compared to maybe M5 or E63 engine replacement? Plus there are battery repair options available, just not in Finland apparently.

Anyway, we're at peak dinosaur juice technology, and electric stuff will only get better.

Edit - grammar.
1925  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [WARNING] Facebook Metaverse Token Plagiarized Whitepaper on: December 24, 2021, 07:13:59 PM
Since the first day the token was launched, it has been stated in our group content at the entrance of our website that "Facebook Metaverse is a project inspired by Mark Zuckerberg". The same warning is also present in our cmc listing. How can you claim that this is deceiving people?

You ripped off everything even though you're in no way associated with Facebook or Zuckerberg. Of course it's deceptive and of course that's how you're trying to make money with it. One vague note isn't gonna cut it. If you didn't want it to be deceptive you could have called it "Snow Crash" or "Completely Useless New Token" and see how many idiots you can convince to give you money for that.
1926  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk project Reserve fund. on: December 24, 2021, 04:49:53 AM
Eradication of scam projects from this forum

Even assuming that this scheme would work - which it wouldn't for reasons explained by pretty much everyone above - that's not what insurance does. It doesn't magically disappear some issue or another. It socializes the cost of dealing with it. Which is great if it's a low-probability random accident of some sort. It's quite bad if it's a deliberate action like a scam because it will be abused up the wazoo.

A much better option would be to trashcan the token/bounty nonsense completely and focus on making Bitcointalk a nice clean non-spammy Bitcoin forum.

Radical idea, I know. Sorry for not warning you all to sit down before reading.

By my count, Saints are now on their 4th QB (do they even have a backup anymore?) and Payton is out too.

Some interesting developments with regards to testing:

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32930584/data-shows-asymptomatic-individuals-not-spreading-covid-19-nfl-chief-medical-officer-says

Quote
The NFL is battling the latest COVID-19 surge with an understanding that symptomatic individuals are driving transmission within the team environment, chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills said Thursday, with no indications of asymptomatic spread.

Quote
The NFL was able to trace, using genomic sequencing, the source of nearly every positive case over that time period and found that approximate 87% of them came from outside team facilities.

Quote
In response to the Omicron variant, the NFL and NFL Players Association agreed last week to halt weekly testing on vaccinated players and begin random testing of a sample across teams and positions.

The problem with this change so late in the season and in the middle of multiple outbreaks is that at best it may slow down the train wreck but is unlikely to make a big positive impact. At worst it may create (or create the perception that it did) more chaos since the whole thing seems already out of control.

ecoin account?
or up to you which account?

None of that is a valid collateral so you're wasting your time here.

another?

Which "another" accounts?

I don't know how the ESPN leagues work either.  If we have twelve teams next year, will we automatically have one elimination round in the playoffs?  Does the league allow making changes like that?  Will it allow us to have the final game on week 17?

I was playing around with custom league settings and it seems quite flexible. You can choose the length of the regular season and the number/length of playoff rounds, among many other things. With 12 teams you can have 2 or 3 divisions for example, and set up playoff byes/wildcards accordingly.

I would suggest to keep it simple though and not get too crazy, but if the preference is to not use week 17/18 then we would have to either make playoff matches 1 week long (might be too harsh), or shorten the regular season. For example with 12 teams you can probably make it 11 weeks and play each team once. There are also double-header options but that seems a bit weird (you play two teams at the same time). Maybe it would work on non-bye weeks. We'll have the long and boring off-season to figure this out.

I guess I go for the block wtfn?

Look what you did, he was going up above 49 and you blocked that...

This is a pretty good TOTP solution.  Been around for a long time...  Not owned by a FAANG company.  Works well... multi device.

https://authy.com

TBH I'm not a big fan of them pushing online backups and multi-device options and even desktop versions. The only backup should be a hard copy, it should be treated like a wallet seed. Losing your 2FA when you lose your (presumably locked/encrypted) phone is a feature, not something that needs to be fixed by making multiple copies of it and increasing the attack surface exponentially.

But then again, people screw up all the time, so not sure what's worse - increased risk due to multiple copies or the risk of people being idiots and not backing it up on paper.
1933  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 22, 2021, 04:06:55 PM
a code that is only available on a phone that no one knows the number.  It is not 2fa. and gives a six digit number every 60 seconds .

Sounds like TOTP, which is not linked to your phone number, it's just an app that generates the code, doesn't send anything over the network, the server generates the same code to verify against. If the server is not compromised, this is reasonably safe, much safer than SMS code anyway.
1934  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 22, 2021, 03:35:11 PM
It's a very informed and competent piece, written by a history professor.
All historians notoriously have a deep understanding of cryptography, game theory and networks.
The article even quotes well known bitcoin experts, such as prof. Stolfi.

I could upload a copy somewhere without a paywall, and will do so if requested by someone I like Tongue
My advice though: Spare your time - it's utter BS.

https://archive.md/IhQl9

Good for a laugh. It could easily be an article about anything, if you completely ignore what the thing is and just say that it has no value. Pepperoni pizza is worse than a ponzi - you eat it and it's gone and you can't get the money back.
1935  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Old phone as cold storage? on: December 22, 2021, 02:19:45 PM
If the whole idea behind airplane mode is to ensure that all connections to and from the device are disabled, how can you have WIFI and Bluetooth enabled? Maybe iOS just displays them as being still turned on in the system, but in reality they aren't, and all networks and antennas are disabled.

It would be like saying these pair of shoes are waterproof unless you step in a puddle of water. In that case your feet will get wet.

There is on-board WiFi on some planes and of course you want the airpods to keep working too.

Airplane mode has very little to do with interference (often cited official reason). It's more about old cell towers getting confused with all those flying phones... not sure if that's even relevant these days but we're still taking shoes off so there's that.
1936  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Old phone as cold storage? on: December 22, 2021, 12:52:41 PM
On the scale of things to be paranoid about, I think I'd be more worried about e.g. a compromised GPU BIOS on my computer running with full privileges than an old reformatted Android phone. For all their faults, there is a decent security model on those phones as opposed to the 40-year-old dumpster fire that is a PC.

I just checked out the Maddogs @ Coiners match.  Every time Stafford throws the ball, earning Coiners some points, it's thrown to Kupp, which earns the Dogs twice as many points.

Yeah even with TDs I get like 5.2 (yards, TD, extra point) and he gets like 6.6 (yards and TD). No chance.

Next week though... Tyreek Hill is on COVID list. I wonder if NFL will move the game. They probably have to, now that they've set the precedent.

In any case, making up 55 points will be nearly impossible. Enjoy getting crushed by Maddogs in the finals Wink

It seems unfair, I demand Nutildah get his ass back here and explain himself.  That's going to be a difficult points spread to overcome.

Nice try, but nutildah seems to be sufficiently pissed at this shithole of a forum and will just quietly beat us up Smiley

1939  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏈🏈 The American Football Discussion Thread 🏈🏈 on: December 21, 2021, 10:44:49 PM
Honestly I don't even know how espn leagues work.  It's a combination of 2 weeks?  If that's the case next year we should change it to not have the last game of the year count for the finals.  A lot of teams who have their seeding solidified in the last week rest their star players so they can heal up and not take a chance to get hurt.  Is it a 2 week average?

And yeah you need like 4 rushing tds from Stafford tonight!

morvillz7z explained it here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5224503.msg58650233#msg58650233

It's a sum of points for two weeks (15-16) for the semifinal match, and the sum of weeks 17-18 for the final... yeah it's a bit of a gamble with the last two weeks but the way this season is going it's likely that we won't have many clinched teams resting their players. I wouldn't be against changing it next year though.
1940  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🏈🏈 The American Football Discussion Thread 🏈🏈 on: December 21, 2021, 09:46:09 PM
Yeah my team of course took a nose dive this week.  I need a HUGE game out of Henderson in the rams game.  Talking 2 tds and 100 plus scrimmage yards.  Only good thing is Seattle is awful on run defense hopefully mcvay pounds the ball all game.  Good luck to everyone if you still got some guys going tonight.

I have a good chance to make my humiliating defeat even worse. If Stafford does well, chances are that Jefferson/Kupp will outscore him due to the way yards and touchdowns count for QBs vs WRs. So my best bet is for Stafford to fizzle out but not before he gets into field goal range but no further than 36 yard line, 10 times...

... yeah I'm done.
