That was an awesome upset, one for the history books.  I guess it's true when they say it's better to be lucky than good. 

After the flat performance Chelsea had last weekend, and with City seemingly unstoppable I was quite surprised by today's outing.  Congrats to Chelsea, and their fans.  As an Arsenal fan, that's about all the politeness I can muster. 

Nice, good strategy.  Those are good odds, I must have been too late for that.  The best I saw this morning (the game was at noon my local time,) was just under 3.5 for Chelsea.  At 4.7 I think I would have done the same thing.

I have a small laptop that use in the same way.  I recently updated it with Ubuntu Desktop 20.04.2 minimal install, Ian Coleman's Bip39 tool, and Electrum.  That's all that's I have installed on it.  I haven't physically disabled the network adaptors and USB ports.  I like to keep the software updated, so I plan to use the hardware from time to time for easier upgrades.  Once the machine is set up the way I like it I disable the NIC and USB devices using the bios settings, which are also password protected.  The wifi adaptor is always disabled, I only use a wired connection when updating a newly installed OS.

I also use an encrypted USB as a redundant back up for all my seeds.  I store the seeds in an encrypted text file, and the USB stick is one of those aluminum enchased Corsair Survivor sticks.  Am using bitlocker for encryption, which is probably not the best thing since all my other devices are using open source OSs and software.  Since my data is PGP encrypted anyway, I don't think it's that big of a risk.  Of course I have my seeds backed up on paper and stainless steel, stored in a fire resistant document bag, in a fire resistant steel safe.  It's just nice to have them available electronically when I restore cold wallets on my off-line machine.

Chelsea is inspired like I've never seen them before.  I'm surprised, but what's more surprising is that City looks surprised, lol.  Now with De Bruyne out, it's not likely to get any better for City. 

De Bruyne just came out, big blow for City.  He took a hit to his eye, it looked pretty bad, and he was obviously in pain.  I hope he's all right.  

I was sure City would run away with it, and had a bet on them for the game.  In fact I had a betbulder multi for City to win, both to score, and over 8.5 corners.  There've been two corners so far.  

At least the game has been more entertaining than it would have been if my predictions were accurate.  

So many wanting this to be a close match, but I think City runs away with it.  Chelsea has been strong, but I don't think they can repeat their EPL upset.  City is such a polished team with unbelievable skill at each position.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I since I have City to win here it goes: Go City!

I hate to be callus about this, but if bounty hunters refuse to take the time to research the projects they support, this kind of thing will never stop.  As long as there are gullible people wiling to shill for projects that turn out to be scams 99.9% of the time, there will be scammers to take advantage of them.

The altcoin section and specifically the bounty section is full of scammers.  Most of the time bounties are paid in the altcoin which the project is promoting, so even if the bounty hunters get paid there's no guarantee the altcoin will ever have any value.  The project could be just priming the altcoin for an exit scam anyway, so unless the bounty hunter is able to cash out early, his time has been wasted.  That's assuming the there's a market (and/or exchange listing) for the altcoin in the first place.  Never trust the project promotors' claims of the value of their altcoins, without a market there's no way to confirm, and more often than not, it's a lie to lure in the gullible and the greedy.

As others have already said, taproot isn't going to be an issue for you.  

However, running obsolete software on an outdated system might become an issue.  There are only five dependencies needed to install Electrum, and you can get away with three if you only want to run it from the source code.  They've all been tested to function with the OS, but I suppose there's no way to ensure there's nothing malicious in the code without auditing it.  Even validating the packages authenticity doesn't doesn't guarantee that it hasn't been compromised by a malicious developer.  I get it, there's no such thing as being too paranoid, until you are.

I understand why you're reluctant to update your system, and since you don't make a lot of transactions you'll likely find yourself in this situation again and again.  It might be better for you to use a hardware wallet, which effectively gives you the security you're looking for.

CYA.  Their doing the safe thing, and I don't blame them.  The vaccine is new, and all of it's ramifications are unknown.  It's highly unlikely that a person who was recently vaccinated for any disease could cause harm to others.  However, when someone is recovering from surgery they're more susceptible to infections.  It makes sense to take precautions.  They would probably do the same if you're uncle had recently been vaccinated for measles.

 

What a heartbreaking loss for the Devils, but it was a great game.  Both teams played quite well, brilliant passing, and great defense.  Both goals were excellently played, no gimmes there.

In my humble opinion, this forum doesn't have a lot of effect on the world of crypto anymore.  Crypto is bigger.  And it's still full of scams.  Nothing going on here will hurt crypto nearly as much as a pump-and-dump celebrity influencer.  

I'm not trying to speak for theymos, but I'm not sure he thinks he's "doing the correct thing," but rather allowing the community to choose what's right or wrong.  Having a hands-off approach doesn't mean he's impartial.  Quite recently he stepped in to take remedial action against scams.  But these are different situations, and can't really be compared.

I was going to suggest bit torrent, but you can probably sync bitcoind and electrumx five time over before transferring ~60GB that way.

If one of you has a MS Teams account or a Dropbox Pro account, they allow you transfers up to 100GB.   There's also transferxl.com, and transfernow.net which allow up to 5GB transfers for the basic accounts, but you'll have to pay to get more.  None of that is going to be fast, and if one of you has metered data usage that would make it impractical.  I think synchronizing the db yourself is probably the most practical solution.

Or, just play around with testnet.

It took my system some time to sync, but I'm sure it wasn't a week.  Like I said before, I think it was a max of three days and IIRC the block height was around 660k at the time, so not that long ago.  I'm using an internal sata ssd, and I doubt my internet connection throttled the process in any way.

The first time I set up ElectrumX I had just built the system for it, sync'd bitcoind, then realized I hadn't turned on txindex.  
I had to sync the bitcoin blockchain again, then sync ElectrumX.  It seemed like I was waiting for a month.

1xbit is at it again.  They showed up today with a new account and started a signature campaign, and of course, they have many applicants already.  Then they  started a bounty for reviews, in a self-moderated thread, lol.

I'm not a fan of tagging accounts for wearing a signature, but I am hoping this will cause some to think about whether they want to support this outfit.

I will admit that I suspect there is some truth to what you are saying, but that's all I have is a suspicion.  Most DT member won't do anything about it unless you can provide evidence.  As has been demonstrated already in this thread, a newbie showing up and making accusations isn't going convince anyone.

I'm not much of a gambler, so I don't have a lot of accounts on gambling sites.  The first thing I noticed about 1xBit.com's site is that they don't ask for any personal information when registering a new account, they don't even require an email address.  I like that, actually, but it does make me a bit suspicious.  More on that later.

The site it's self seems easy enough to navigate, has a lot of popular sports to bet on, and plenty of casino games to play.  To me, the site is kind of busy with all the bells and whistles that can be fit onto a single web page.  It's somewhat distracting, but maybe that's the goal.

Would I use 1xbit?  The answer is no.  The existence of a site that works isn't enough, I would need to trust the site and the operators.  In this particular case, I don't.  There have been too many scam accusations against 1xbit to ignore.  The fact they allow users to register without so much as an email address sparks my skeptical suspicions.  They can use this feature to lure in clients who are concerned about their anonymity, then block large withdrawals using AML as their excuse.  This is a common tactic employed by unscrupulous on-line casinos to bilk their customers, and freeze their funds.  There's is a significant amount of evidence that 1xbit.com and affiliated casinos have used this tactic to steal customer's money.

Conclusion: I don't recommend 1xbit.com.

If you buy bitcoin on an exchange, it doesn't move from their wallet.   The exchange just creates an internal database entry to grant you ownership of the bitcoin.  So, you are correct that there is no "on-chain" transaction in that scenario, there is only the exchange's db entry.  Not until you withdraw the coins will there be an on-chain transaction. 

The exchange itself had to obtain the coins through an on-chain transaction; either the exchange bought the coins, another customer deposited the coins into his account (on-chain transaction to the exchange's wallet,) or the exchange mined the coins.  There is no difference about the coins themselves, they just exist in a wallet that's controlled by the exchange.

Last night I was trying to compile Pasta.alla.Ragu and realized that my working directory was fucked.  I was unable to find pot.lid.asy in the default location, I could only find lid.nopot, which would not suffice.  I had noticed in the past that you can get by with pot.nolid, although it's less efficient.   Sometimes it can be found in /home/kitchen/stove/top, but it was missing from that location as well.  I decided to try executing sudo find /home/kitchen -n pot.  

The results were troubling:
