Well firstly someone should ask the achinese guy why he dose t like the name. It could be it means something very negative in China like I dunno, incest or donkey cock. Maybe then a name change could be considered later....but they could just use the word for vanilla in Chinese. it seems like why should we bend for the whims of Chinese market but if a Chinese coin came out that was awesome and in the top 10 you don't want them naming it cockface coin or something....

I also know Asians and they tend to say 'oh Chinese people don't like' they tend to voice opinions about the collective. Plus throw language barrier in, maybe only a few people said the name was bad and he made it seem like a billion people didn't like it.
582  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GEMZ]|GetGems - Social Messaging App That Pays | LIVE on Android and iOS | on: August 05, 2015, 06:39:24 PM
GetGems has sold itself on privacy, but the only way you can be secure in that is if the code itself can be reviewed for flaws by the public. It's also an app that people hold money in. In order to be secure in that, it needs to be possible to review. Closed source code has higher potential vulnerable to both external actors like the NSA (or Mossad, given that the team is based in Tel Aviv), hackers trying to steal your Bitcoin, and even exit scamming. The whole point of Bitcoin is to not have to trust external actors, there's no way I can recommend this as a Bitcoin wallet to my friends until I can be comfortable in it's privacy and security credentials.

Aside from that, it's in violation of the license given by Telegram.

Getgems is still in beta let's not forget. Getgems have their reasons and the reasons I heard on reddit was to protect users info at this early stage, the plan IS to be open source later. So many crypto projects have been all or partially closed source at the beginning. The guys complaining were right but only right in an anal following the letter of the law kind of way.

it's also worth adding that Telegram knows of the project and seem to give its blessing, at least thats how it looks so far.

583  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GEMZ]|GetGems - Social Messaging App That Pays | LIVE on Android and iOS | on: August 05, 2015, 04:33:12 PM
All Gems needs is a few well placed media articles to intice people to try the app. Which won't be that hard cause Getgems is a news worthy story, ie social messengering that pays its users, it's a unique idea that would be of interest to any casual user of social apps. Once everything is running like a charm I'm sure the marketing department has some great plans to get the word out. It's a personal belief but I actually think effort to convince the Bitcoin community about Getgems is slightly wasted energy, they are very dogmatic about Bitcoin and often are anti alts plus the alt community is too small. Outside the gulag of cryto is where this app needs to get. In fact talking about Bitcoin and coins etc prob will turn the people off. Just keep,to the simple story of giving social back to the people etc.

I know nothing but I wonder if the removal from Google is from disgruntled guy who has a problem with the code not being completely open source. I don't understand the subject of open source but a couple guys on reddit seemed upset about it.

I'm just wondering if there is a way to use ONLY the recovery phrase since I don't have a means of getting mobile sms to create another telegram account to use the app. Is there a derivation method to recover the gems using the phrase. https://www.blockscan.com/address?q=1NxsTKCou8H7UjAePb7BZBfW91AWy2RnpY is where my gems are on the counterparty.

Like I said i'm not 100% with this info. But reading this.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=758004.msg12001122#msg12001122

means you need to access an sms for your mobile wallet. But you could use anyones phone, open the wallet then send the coins to your counterpart wallet....or wherever.

App not showing in playstore.  Shocked

What's up with this??

i just checked and yeap...the app is not in the GooglePlay Store for me too. Don't see it. Just disappeared.
GETGEMS Team, do check this out asap.

its pretty early on Israeli time....im sure they will see the problem in the next few hours.
586  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GEMZ]|GetGems - Social Messaging App That Pays | LIVE on Android and iOS | on: August 05, 2015, 04:21:16 AM
I guess the better question is. When you no longer have access to incoming mobile SMS how can you use the recovery phrase to at least move the GEMZ to a counterwallet.

You don't need the recover phrase to move gems to counterparty.

All I have is the recover phrase. The app was on a phone I lost.

Ok I'm a bit rusty on this cause info often changes but. Firstly your wallet coins are relatively safe cause anyone finding them even if they understood what they are and where to send them still needs your pin number to make a transaction....which will be locked if they try a few times and its wrong.

So you need to get another device, an iPad, another phone etc and use the passphrase to put your wallet on it. The I suggest moving funds to a new wallet....though you will know if someone attempts to use your wallet on the lost device I believe.

589  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Did any of you made a killing with VNL? on: August 04, 2015, 06:00:50 AM
The coin is doing well on the back of innovations that if fully realised make it possibly a top 10 coin. The big thing is zero time where it can make a complete payment and confirmations in a decentralised way in 8 seconds. Without any hype that does make it potentially very attractive. I hate to say it but as a payment mechanism it does actually solve the loooooong confirmations that the masses will very quickly tire of.

I'm not saying buy it but let's be balanced and say it does solve a problem in crypto.
590  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sooooo China, isn't this shameful? on: August 04, 2015, 04:11:09 AM
Just say your right and China is pretty slack in making nodes it makes sense to me.

What I know about Asia generally is people here don't care that much about strangers, most care and attention is given to family members, not people outside they don't know.

North American and Europeans I find particularly young generation without family obligations tend to think altruistically as some kind of justification and it's the prevalent trend in social media etc, pay it forwards etc and soooo many memes and viral stuff on FB about being randomly 'good' to people you don't know. Asians are different they care about their own and are know for not giving to charities etc. I personally think Asia is far healthier, families are susposed to be close. Charity truly does begin at home first. People giving altruistically to faceless people is good but kind of sad if they then get upset others don't do the same. IMO.
591  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GEMZ]|GetGems - Social Messaging App That Pays | LIVE on Android and iOS | on: August 01, 2015, 05:18:17 PM
not to mention that the informations it require to dl the app..it scaring away tons of people........50m users may be just a dream, ppl are getting smart and care about their privacy now

Smells like FUD to me. What privacy concerns? The app require your phone number to register the wallet to your phone for security. The app is perfectly legal, there is no personal information shared either about your wallet or your messaging. Everything you are saying is wrong.
592  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Being against Mark Karpels is simply attacking our own. on: August 01, 2015, 05:14:33 PM
This isn't that complicated. It's pretty simple. What happened is the following:

1. Someone opened a service that held Bitcoins for customers (thus making himself responsible for deposits and indirectly stating he was competent enough to have them in their possession)

2. That person lost all the funds. Be it from stealing, hacking, whatever, he lost it.

I don't know how can this be more clear.
If hypothetically I held coins for you, and I lost them... What would your attitude be?

Despite this, I can agree with the following:

You never see these kind of arrests for all the banking frauds in the West and including Japan.

Ok let's put aside the 150,000 attacks a second....let's say your 100% right, this is a simple case of incompetence and fraud, lies, criminal actions the whole thing.

Still this is the establishments wet dream and the way he is being paraded in the press with this story and labelled the Chief of Bitcoin is let's be honest a terrible advert for Bitcoin. Go ask someone on the street over the next week if a Bitcoin is good or bad and many will say they heard the boss of Bitcoin was arrested.  Roll Eyes

So if its terrible PR for Bitcoin shouldn't we as Bitcoin supporters have a little less joy about someone involved in Bitcoin being put up in a show trial and arrest? No one needs to feel sorry for him but I bet half this forum could get a few months in prison for minor tax evasion....Did everyone record all their Bitcoin trades?

593  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Being against Mark Karpels is simply attacking our own. on: August 01, 2015, 05:02:31 PM
I DID NOT DEFEND KARPELES!!!!!

I said he was taken down, he could of acted more open and honestly after an attack on his exchange once he knew it was a mess but he didn't, that part is his crimes.

But the attack WAS the cause of the problem, do I have to explain simple cause and effect to you people. So I'm saying there were those who wanted this to happen and for Karpeles to screw up and they are taking every opportunity to nail him to the wall.

Can't anyone see that major players in Bitcoin are being taken out, whos gonna be next?

Probably I'm arguing with a bunch of guys in an NSA office..

I read so many conflicting things about China and app stores. What is the actual current situation in China does anyone know? can they download Getgems or not? I just read that Google Play is likely to return to China late this year.

But iOS is live, and Getgems can be downloaded now?

http://www.cultofmac.com/329356/report-china-downloads-more-ios-apps-than-anyone/

So they can download from the app store? or is it some other store where ios apps can be downloaded which is in Chinese just like the play store alternatives.

It seems a far more positive situation than I thought. But strange that getgems home site is blocked but not the apps...

Nope, this can't be opened. (GuangDong, China Telecom)

Code:

It works here.

Code:
Does the apple App Store work for you?

Yes, certainly.

Great, thanks for feedback. Did you try using the app?
596  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [GEMZ]|GetGems - Social Messaging App That Pays | LIVE on Android and iOS | on: August 01, 2015, 04:33:24 PM
I am not sure how much of the total gem amount is available for referral bonuses and other promotions but at 25 gems per referral, it wont last too long (hopefully with big numbers joining). Will it just stop when the fund dries up or will it scale down in time to make the referral system last longer?

I wouldn't worry too much, we have around 45-50m coins to share out and as the number of users increases its logical that the price would increase and so the referral bonus etc would be less than 25 gems in all likelihood.

the plan unless radically changed is to airdrop into wallets 25,000 daily for about 3 years which is still only around 27m. Which is why we are still at the early stages of distribution and is why I believe Gemz is highly undervalued cause the supply is far less than people think at this stage. I think 1 gems should for a good balance be around 5-10 cents. Which would mean a dollar or two for a referral which would be very attractive.

Curious how you come up with that price for Gems.  If the app caught on and there were 50 million people using it, I'd expect the price of gems to be much much much higher than 5 or 10 cents.  Not saying you are wrong though.

No I mean the price now in balance with rewards, ie a referral is a couple of dollars, that's about right. I'm basically being realistic we can't expect for a gem to be worth a dollar at this stage but 2 cents is too little. Like I said 5-10 would be a nice balance with the rewards at the moment, and I believe we should be at that price cause the marketcap has been overestimated, IMO.

If you thought the app would get 50m people using I friken better be wrong cause that would be far more users than even Bitcoin (at this stage) so who knows what the price would be...

Just one more thing. Will there be a warning or notice of when the investor airdrop occurs so we have time to put gems into the app. I have mine on counterparty at the momonet

I heard rumours that the airdrop will start in August. I have most of my coins in counterparty wallet also. Again I wouldn't worry I trust the team. There may be a way to connect your counterparty wallet to the app, not sure yet so you wouldn't need to move all your coins to the app anyway....let's wait and see.

It would be really helpful if I could get a bit of feedback about how much access Getgems messenger app gets in China at the moment. Do these links work for you from China?

I dunno anything. What I do know is China should not be left out of this coin. The vol on a chinese Bitcoin exchanges should be enough for people to know if China isn't involved then half or more of the Bitcoin community isn't involved. As an app it suits China also.
