What I mean is, for example, someone blocking me will see

This is already on the list and will be the next feature.

I'd suggest using activity instead of date registered. A user may have registered here six months ago and posted a sale or something or even not done anything and just forgot about their account.

Realistically, if you get to 100 activity and are without merit, it's probably worth ignoring...

Yeah makes more sense. But what happens to users who are sitting on default merit just because the system rewarded them. E.g A full member who got rewarded by the system is sitting on 100 merits without any merit received, what happens to a user like this? Should they be ignored?

The majority of people that post decent stuff never get any merit. And newcomers that actually post decent stuff will be included in the ignored list. I dont know how well this system will work out.

Just like I said earlier, this plugin is for making unreadable sections readable. I don't believe each and every member here will start using this. There will be plenty of merit sources and people who won't use this. Plus this isn't the final thing... Plenty of stuff can be added to make it friendly towards merit-worthy users.

Quote
Maybe, if possible, you could add a detector for plagiarised content or thread duplicates.

I will look into it. I hope there is some kind of an API for this. Else, I don't see how this could be implemented. Plus something like this will slow down the plugin.

Quote
However, yes not enough members posting good quality posts are getting merit.

That's another story. Ask Merit sources to be more generous, spend more time hunting for merit-worthy posts etc, This plugin wouldn't hinder their efficiency at all... Even if they are on a "Merit-run" all the plugin is asking them is to click that 'Read Anyway' Button. I dunno how hard can it be to click a button.

Quote
I would love to see this as an official forum feature, where you can just click "show users/posts with xx Merit only" on top of each board. I hope this will be implemented in the future (after the Merit system has had some more time to mature).

Yeah, I wanted to suggest it in the community suggestions thread But thought it won't get implemented anytime soon, so I took it to my self. Hired a guy to code this. But this would make a great 'official' Feature.

Quote
I'm paranoid to install browser extensions, so I'm not testing it yet.

No worries Cheesy, I am waiting for devs from the community to review it.

I see you have a nice ann thread but there is no single feedback from anyone or any of your client/s (if you already have). So for the meantime, I will not add you yet to this list unless there's at least 3 feedback to your service.

Totally understand but what its worth... I have got a couple of feedbacks on my alt account which I made when I got hacked... https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1086504

BTW I am working with my first client on my new 'thread'... You can see the designed thread here...https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5021008

Does it count the time they have been in the forum? I mean, it’s not the same someone who has been here since January and hasn’t received a single merit as someone who registered one month ago.

'Time' or date of registration isn't taken into consideration yet. However, I do get the point you are trying to make here. Merit-worthy posts/users may get ignored. I will Add this request to the upcoming features list. To show how long the user has been on the forum.  Thanks for the suggestion. Smiley

Quote
I think this is overkill and unnecessary.

If a user didn't receive any merit yet, that doesn't mean what he/she has to say isn't valuable and can be ignored.

The purpose of this plugin is to make 'Spam-infested' sections readable. Try to use this in the 'Bitcoin Discussion' Section and you will find how this isn't an 'overkill'.

Quote
I know the spam issue is increasingly annoying but we need to tackle the root cause and not the effect.

And what solutions have you seen getting implemented to tackle the root cause? All I have seen is an 'Ok' from Theymos.
605  Other / Meta / Spam Filter Plugin V1 on: September 10, 2018, 01:24:41 PM
Bitcointalk Chrome Spam Filter Plugin v1.

What does the plugin do?

It basically ignores all the posts made by users who haven't received any merit. You can also set a minimum amount of merit a user must have received to not get filtered by the plugin.

Example:

Download: https://mega.nz/#!ifQChQqZ!z52O9Kpsgh7dI38iwnnYFwh0u5w3FJ7OkZ5sm2sob3s
By downloading this Plugin you agree not to Resell it in any way or form. However, you are allowed to modify it. This plugin is for personal use only.

How to use?
- Download & install chrome
- Download the zip file linked above.
- Extract the file
- Goto Chrome > Settings > Extensions.
- "Enable Developer mode" > Click Load Unpacked Extension and Locate the 'extracted' folder.

Note: This plugin was not developed by me, I hired a developer to code this plugin. If anyone can review the code that would be great. The code is commented out.

Upcoming features:
- Allow users to totally remove/hide posts from users who haven't received any merit.
- Show how long the user has been on the forum.

Suggestions and feedback will be appreciated.

Fantastic news! We're yet again a step closer to the downfall of BitPay since they in no shape or form will ever add LN payments.

I'm not really a fan of centralized payment gateways, but the good thing here is that it will stimulate users to actually switch over to LN and that alone is already the best short term goal to achieve. The more people use LN, the less incentive there is for them to use altcoins.

Another thing is that adding LN payments as payment gateway makes you gain an advantage over the rest, so there is also an economical incentive for them to quickly adapt to new technoligical advancements speeding up Bitcoin payments. In other words, the future is more than bright for Bitcoin, but not so much for altcoins.

Exactly, Enemy of my enemy is a friend for now...

Ok, before we get too exited about this, let's just consider the extra fees that are paid to the payment gateway.

You do know that this 1% is way less than what other payment processors charge right? Just look at Paypal for an example. They Charges 2.9% + $0.3 per transaction. Imagine an item selling for $199. The user will end up paying $6.07 in fees if he decides to buy. But if the merchant is accepting payments via Coingate etc. The user will pay only $1.99 extra...  That turns out to be 67% Less than other Payment Processors. So this 1% isn't that bad as it sounds especially when you look at how it will help up with 'Mass-adoption'.
608  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-09-09] Lightning Network Comes to 4,000 Merchants Worldwide Via Coingate on: September 09, 2018, 10:15:02 AM
From the article: Lithuanian blockchain payment processor CoinGate, which was founded in 2014, has announced that over 4,000 merchants worldwide that use its services can now accept Bitcoin (BTC) payments over Lightning Network (LN), a "second layer" payment protocol that enables instant, scalable, and low-cost Bitcoin transactions.

Link: https://www.cryptoglobe.com/latest/2018/09/lightning-network-comes-to-4000-merchants-worldwide-thanks-to-coingate/

Dmitrijus Borisenka, co-founder and CEO of CoinGate, says that the pilot launch had been successful: “We were pleasantly surprised when we came across tweets of our Lightning Network implementation at the Kasbah Bar in Oslo. You may have heard critics claiming, ‘you can’t buy coffee with Bitcoin’. Well, we’re not sure about coffee, but buying beer with Bitcoin within a second for zero fees is definitely possible in Oslo"

Who's up for some beer? On a serious note tho. We need Payment Processors Like Coingate to adapt to these changes, Only these people can bring the LN to the masses. Interesting times ahead for sure to say the least. How will community react to the LN once it gets some traction? Will the people who invested in BTC to get rich Quick will start to use BTC as their daily driver? What will it take to change their mindset? I don't believe that one day a guy who is hodling for years will suddenly start to use BTC as his daily driver.

Ethereum's blockchain in no shape or form offers any decentralization, especially with how you only need to make sure you catch Vitalik and you're pretty much good to go as government.

Why is that? Please bear with me, as I haven't looked into ethereum for a good while now...

Quote
Ethereum has rolled back the chain already to save investor funds, and that with a minority agreement! In other words, Ethereum is pretty much the last blockchain you would want to use for these purposes, especially if you take into consideration that Vitalik recently admitted to write a fork in case he's forced to do so. It's a complete lunatic.

Lol, Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do with Ethereum. Believe it or not, I haven't even looked into what plasma is and how it functions, All I know is it will solve the scalability issue of ethereum.

Voting itself is and will always be prone to some extent of manipulation, even on the most decentralized network as the one from Bitcoin.

How and Why? I can't think of a way to manipulate results if every single voter is securing the network. Even if you have a two party system and supporters of the majority party collaborate to do a 51% attack. But why would they do that, if they are the majority? It doesn't make any sense.

Watch out, Islamic countries are not the most welcoming to non believers, especially if those non believers happen to be women. That said, I'm pretty sure many people would convert for the opportunity to sell their BTC for 24k USD right now  Grin

They do not like non believers, like #darkangel11 said, but if you can find someone to trade on your behalf and then send you the money, then you will makes huge profits.

Nah actually 'shites/Shias' are the most tolerant of them all... I am sure I will be quite safe Wink But you two need to reduce your dosage of Fox news tho Tongue

Guys, you do realize that the far majority of the Iranians aren't actually buying a whole coin for $24,000 right? It's all fractions of a coin they buy and sell.

Exactly! This is a bull signal at it's very best. Iran isn't middle east where princes will line up to buy 100 BTC bricks. Manipulators are at play here... Nothing more

I am not sure who will pay 24k$ for 1 BTC in Iran these days.

another iranian?

if you have high inflation and a market that's really hard or impossible to access abroad then whatever price exists there kinda stops meaning anything to anyone outside it.

i wonder how many miners from abroad would migrate there if mining turned out to be cheaper than most of the world.

Lol, I am packing my stuff and moving to Iran. They have got some really cheap electricity over there... 0.017 cents per KWH!  Shocked Looks like Iran will need some freedom soon... Wink

Good news on hearing a country like Iran being in favor of cryptocurrencies

As a person who has studied several religions, I can assure you this, You will keep hearing these 'Good news' repeatedly from Muslim Majority countries Because these CryptoCurrencies are 'Sharia' compliant or in other words are not based around 'Interest'. The issue today with 'Muslims' is that they have failed to realize that 'Banking' is totally based around 'Interest' which isn't Legal or "Halal" for them. I always have an interesting talk with my 'Muslim' friends when I tell them about how they have been fooled for a good century or so. Most of them don't believe at first but when they see the evidence by going through some YouTube videos I have collected, they are mostly stunned. But then again they come up with a 'logic' that even if they move to cryptos altogether, They can't use them as their daily driver, which is a valid point. Large-scale Crypto Adoption by 'Muslims' is a couple of 'Fatwas' away IMO and this is only the beginning.

The only thing which surprises me is why is it taking so long for these 'Fatwas' to role in. Bitcoin has been around for almost a decade now. what I suspect is 'Bankers' are paying these top scholars to keep their mouth shut for as long as they can. I can't think of a reason other than this.

Exactly blockchain doesn't servers any purpose if its used in a centralized way. What I would like to see is smart contracts being run on a public controlled blockchain. That IMO will be a true "Free and Fair" election. Something like Ethereum where power isn't distributed to a few but rather to many. If they don't, it's just like replacing the current database with a newer one. We are still very far from having 'Decentralized' elections. The governments are not ready to trust the people who are running the network, yet...

Would they? what if the network is being controlled by the goverenment it self? 51% attack would be an easy way for them to manipulate the results... Unless they use a 3rd party blockchain like ethereum. There is nothing stopping them to manipulate the results.

We need this because we are new to the BitcoinTalk space and have newbie accounts, so image posting and other options are unavailable to us.

Look into copper membership. It's what you are looking for. It will allow you to publish images. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2385104

As for bounty managers, Go for an experienced one, who has strict rules against spam. They might not accept your token as payment but at least you will get a 'quality' service from them. Good luck!

@DdmrDdmr

I agree with your statement, But we can't assume things at this stage. It's better if theymos responds himself, The Code could be well documented for all we know. I don't think theymos is one of those guys who won't comment/ document out the code.

Quote
You give people money and they don't do what you want, or the people you hire turn out not to be trustworthy

This is a perfect example of failed Project management. SMF is already an open source web app. Asking people to develop certain features on something which is already public shouldn't be an issue. As I said, Instead of coding all things. He can spend his time reviewing the code. This way he doesn't has to trust the live version of bitcointalk to anyone. Features will get developed and the forum will stay safe in his hands.
619  Bitcoin / Project Development / Spam Filter Plugin on: September 05, 2018, 08:28:36 AM
Update.

So, I recently got in touch with a developer. He was able to work on a concept which I provided to him. Here is the prototype in action that he made... https://youtu.be/vp-iS5yN-ro

Basically what it does for now is filter outs all the posts from members who haven't received any merit yet. But I have realized that this isn't the perfect solution. As it could filter out posts which could be merit worthy. Another thing I thought was Instead of filtering out the posts, The plugin could re-arrange the posts on the thread, Where people who have the highest merit will be shown at the top. But then again, if the thread is started by a user who has received no merit, The thread won't make any sense to people using the plugin.

For now, I have asked the developer to work on a system similar to the ignoring one. But it will be a 'smart' one. People who have not received any merit and are sitting on their default merit values will be ignored automatically but Instead of adding users to the ignore list, The plugin will modify their post's text similar to "this user is being ignored". While the user will have the option to read the post anyway. something like this.

I plan to release its code Once its ready. So everyone can compile on their own and no sort of trust is required to run this thing.
620  Other / Meta / Community-Led Development of Bitcointalk? on: September 04, 2018, 01:16:14 AM
Since Theymos has recently said that he is short-handed, I think its about time this should be discussed. Should Community-Led development of bitcointalk be a thing? There have been many great suggestions in the "Community generated suggestions" thread. Many of these ideas/suggestions would take years to get implemented at the current development pace, No Offence. What I want to propose here is to allow the community developers to offer a helping hand to theymos.

There are certain pros and cons to this. The biggest con is making bitcointalk's code open to the public. Which would mean if there are any loose ends in the code, a rogue developer could exploit them. Obviously, these developers won't work on the 'live' version of bitcointalk. The code written by them will be first published to a GitHub Repository where 'theymos' and other developers would validate it before implementing on the live version.

Another con would be, We will see Copies of bitcointalk pop-up everywhere, making phishing easier for hackers.

The biggest Pro is the obvious one i.e Rapid Development of new features. Personally, I don't know whether this one 'Pro' will outweigh all the cons which community-led development may bring. But I would like to hear your opinion on this. Should something like this take place? Or Theymos should consider hiring new people to work on the development of bitcointalk with him. Also, Theymos has yet to explain us why he hasn't been hiring staff for the development of bitcointalk. Funding doesn't seems to be an issue here, Is 'trust' really the major factor behind not hiring people? Or is there something else which is preventing him for not working with people outside of his 'inner circle'. Whatever the reason may be, I think its about time we as a community get some answers.
