1841  Other / Off-topic / Knock on wood: How the hell is my electric still working ? on: December 03, 2013, 04:56:01 AM
Ok, so I got to thinking about new mining hardware, electric consumption, breker tripping and all that shit... we've had our fair share of breaker trips due to three rooms bein wired weird. Thats worked around though just by watching what we run.

Anyway, I got to thinking about everything we currently have plugged in with each room and started smellin smoke coming from my ears. I just dont see how we dont trip more with what we use other than thinking each item has low amperage. But this got me to thinking, most people have what... 20amp breakers with about 12+ per panel dependin on the size of your house with usually 1 room to a breaker based on suspected room usage.

So... lets say someone has 4 of those chinese 20 port USB hubs on ebay, each with a 20V 4.5A power supply. That means they would need to have a new breaker put in for those four or spread them out accross different rooms right ? I know that might seem like a dumb question since I did kind of answer it myself stating that mosts houses use 20amp breakers per room but this watching electricity usage is all new to me. So laugh it up or whatever you need to since I know this probably sounds like the bs ramblings of a mad man that has no idea in hell wtf he's talking about but as it stands. Based on the answer I am waiting on about the amperage of the new equipment I plan on getting, I'm thinking I might need to have 2 new 20A breakers added just for the equipment I want to get with room to spare for future adds.

Ok, time to go drown myself in cold water to cool down the brain that has no idea what the hell just went on lol

Edit: Plus you got people who don't generally think about this stuff and get two new 1250w computers in the same room that don't seem to trip, but that could just be luck in hitting two different breakers.

Would you consider adding something below the computational power thing that updates to always display current difficulty ?
1843  Other / Meta / Re: So is the forum owner ever... on: December 02, 2013, 06:42:21 PM
theymos doesn't want to upgrade the forum because he has a bunch of customizations that will need to be ported.
Ok, and usually I would understand and sympathise with that as I run several high traffic sites of my own... and ok, maybe I did jump the gun on this last issue over frustration but even with say 50 mods, this is still something that should have been planned. Even if all theymos did was plan for a mod a month and then upgrade. To say one hasnt uprgaded their site because they have a bunch of mods that would need to be ported when upgrading said site would most defininately fix a bunch of security holes is a sad excuse to use. Some if not all of you would disagree with this but thats like me saying I wont feed my kid today because the one food he likes went up a buck.

Edit: For jumping the gun on the last bit of downtime and because I suspect theymos does get it a lot I do apologize but I really do feel that upgrading this site would fix alot of his headaches.

So we can police ourselves, thats good, lets see if I can keep this kind clean without getting it locked and me banned.

So are the powers that be here ever gonna get off their collective asses and upgrade the site to the current / less breachy SMF 2.0.6 to stop this man in the middle sniff your password forget about avatars bullshit ?

MIM was caused by the registrar not forums. Quit being such a pompous presumptuous ignorant prick.

Thanks.
A pompous presumptuous ignorant prick that has a valid point re my edit in my last reply.

Nope.

Edit: That aside, I will say and stand by this, alot of the problems this site has had in the past are easily fixed with an upgrade so even if this last issue doesnt pertain to a breachy SMF version, upgrading would still be reccomended hence me standing by my original post.

I was talking to somebody else via email and they said somethin like this should work for my needs.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100010066%20600015697&IsNodeId=1&name=24%20x%20RJ45

Basically the original idea was to expand one port in to many for the new mining equipment I'm gonna be geting that only networks via ethernet.

Of course! You just whap on as many hubs as you like... just don't create loops.
Loops ?

Unless you have an expensive router which handles Span-tree protocol (STP), the layout must be hierarchical. Can't have any lines duplicated or feeding back to somewhere down the same line.
This is what I have...

Netgear Wireless N DGN2200
1849  Other / Off-topic / Re: So there's one port left on my wifi n router but I need... on: November 29, 2013, 07:15:44 PM
Yes, that works fine, for IP management you can use your router's DHCP server do the job, or manually configure each device.
I usually let the router auto assin IP's then I will perma assign them in the rouers config if need be. I just wasnt sure if taking the one remaining port on the router and attachin it to a 20 port hub would work and not cause any issues.

Now that that's out of the way...

Anyone know of a ggood 20 port ethernet hub that can be wall mounted with front facing ports kinda like this USB hub ?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/90W-power-20-port-USB2-0-HUB-USB-HUB-Industrial-grade-HUB-for-Bitcoin-mining-/261340176490?pt=US_USB_Cables_Hubs_Adapters&hash=item3cd916a06a#ht_1040wt_1133

Edit: Doesn't technically have to be wall mountable since I can industrial velcro the back of it.

So there's one port left on my wifi n router but I need at least 6.

Here's my question, if I havee one remaining port on my router, can I take say a 20 port ethernt hub and wire it to the only port left on my router effectively turning it in to 20 ports or will there be IP issues ?

Of course! You just whap on as many hubs as you like... just don't create loops.

i'm not sure as i've never done that.. but you could buy a cheap DD-WRT-able router, turn it into a bridge repeater.. which will extend your signal and give you 4 or 5 more ports.
Thats just the thing though, I know I could do that but the end result will be ultimately needing more than the 6 ports I need now which would mean bridge after bridge after bridge which is why Im curious about my original question.

1852  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / What guarantees that no two address are ever the same ? on: November 28, 2013, 09:06:42 AM
I was layin down trying to sleep and this question hit me and I wanted to ask before I forgot.

For the people who make their paper wallets etc. offline with a computer thats never connected to the internet. What guarantees that say a million, hell 10 million, people with the same setup that two of them never end up with the same generated address. I know alot of you will say it's likely to never happen because of the length of the addresses and the randomness of them, but hey, under the right set of circumstances... anything is possible even though the Mythbusters would otherwise disagree since if they cant reproduce anything then its well, busted.

Speakin of options other than the client... I want to try using CG miner on a laptop I'm refurbishing and use it for nothing but mining. That said, is there a standalone version of CGMiner that can run on a computer and not say merged with MinePeon which I also use on my rPi.

If so can someone please link me to it because I tried lookingg on github but I came accross a bunch of stuff I did not undertand.

Ty.

Have you seen on this : https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer or this http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer
Ok, so I finally took a look at this and I have no idea how in the hell to run it. I was hoping for some sort of exe or soemthing. Guess I'm stuck with my rPi and the bitminter client, dont get me wrong... they both work great. I was just hopingg to try something different using an old laptop with my powered hub attached to it.

I'll give the git link a look when I'm done reinstalling the OS, thx. Hopefully I don't need to naviate anything and just need to hit the download link on that pagee which said something about cgminer master when I clicked it to see the file name.

Maybe its been noted but I can't connect with the stratum address with cgminer Its been saying "24 unauthorized null" and jumps to another pool on my list.

Did something change that I missed since the newest news it about 7000 users.

I'm going to make a quick email on bitminter site but I'm trying to post here first. Hope its something new I didn't noticed and not something bad.

I find my ASIC's hanging up sometimes and going all hulk "green" for anywhere from 5-30 seconds if not longer. Only startd happening about 2-3 days ago.

I also suggested adding the google auth to the site to protect thins like perks from being changed, workers deleted, changing payout address etc.

You said youd check in to it and like the idea so hows that goin ?

Haven't been able to find any info on how that can be done. But then I haven't had much time to look yet.

Well, Slush has it done on his site, so if you two play nice he might help ;-p

So, Doc how is Bitminter's security?

Good.

I recommend turning on 2-factor authentication if supported by your OpenID identity provider. It's supported by Google and Verisign that I know of.

I wanted to come back to bitminter. But after mining for 20~ hours with 200 GH/s I'm only seeing 0.05BTC. Was it just a bad few rounds? Even with bad rounds, I never had it this bad at slush.
I'm curious if this has gotten any better for you and also what your rig looks like, thx.
