Looking at the Boston Dynamics recent video, I can't help thinking how shotgun resistant these things are or will be.
I'd love to find out, and probably will, but for now drones will have to do. Roll Eyes

green lasers
electromagnetic fields
the good old pitfall

...

plenty of options.

There are also slugs. I mean, typical 12 gauge barrel is 0.727 inch diameter. That's gotta put a dent in any of those machines unless they are armor plated.

My thoughts exactly, a shotgun slug that can take down a wild bore will most likely take down a robot as well.

Zeroth Law
A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm.

I think that fourth law that R Daneel came up with all by himself (protect humanity) is a bit too PC for my taste but it works well in the books.

I have to reread those books. Isn't R Daneel the emperors gardener or something on Trantor?

the zeroth law? it did work out in the series.

cant remember if R Daneel was the gardener though, thought he was an adviser of some sort.

time to re read some stuff. got a bit of a backlog right now.

Didn't he have some kind of mental power to nudge people in (what he perceived as) the right direction for humanity?

Or am I confusing that with some other books?

possibly as there was a robot in the robot series that could do that. had to be very very light touch in a direction the person was already inclined as there was the fear of messing the person up bigly. but im not sure if that was R Daneel or his sidekick robot.. forgot its name.

there was The Mule of course but that was really the Foundation series even though eventually the robot and Foundation books were tied together.

Yeah, maybe I'm confusing one robot for another.
The mule wasn't a robot though. But now I know that he was called the mule, in the Swedish books he is called "Mulan", (meaning "the mule") and I never new if that was just a weird future space name or if it actually meant "the mule", now I know.

That's what I said. Put an "innocent bystander" (e.g., a harmless pregnant woman) on the front and attack from the back. Robot can't react.

I don't get it, why should a robot not defend itself against a pregnant woman?
First law. Women are humans too.

And the innocent fetus could be counted too, depending on point of view, advancement of pregnancy, and other parameters. Let's not go there now.

Do you mean that the robot defending itself also by default means harming a human?
In the scenario I was dreaming up the robot just stops the thug without harming him more than needed to protect others and himself.

our AI Overlords are now fully mobile

Boston Dynamics-Do you love me?

Holy fuck. Based on that, I think we will have will have humanoid robots in our homes by 2030.

A buddy has a robot mower for his lawn.  And it’s starting to make sense to replace our lawn guy with a robot...

"holy fuck" was also the first thing that came into my mind watching this. how long will it take for those things to stop you at some intersection and ask for drivers license and some sats?

scary creatures. when we will meet them in real life i bet them are not dancing for us. it will be other way around...  Tongue
I am scared. I, too, have read the Asimov short stories as a kid. The Three Laws are a good idea but a practical impossibility because of the way they are coded. Consider a robocop that fines you. That is damaging a human. Do the Laws only cover physical harm? What if the fined human chooses to destroy the robot? It should succumb voluntarily. Will it or...? Will they code anti-burglar/anti-vandal response into the robots? How far can they go? Is a pregnant woman the same as a gang of thugs? Can a gang of thugs acquire relative immunity by hiring a pregnant woman as a robofront?

I too like the "robot" novels, I haven't read them in a while, but if I remember correctly the Three (four) laws covers the robot's right to self defence.

Yep, googled and found them, law number three.

First Law
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
Second Law
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
Third Law
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Moving is complicated. A big problem is you may have family/friends/whatnot at the old place who you can fall back on if things go weird short-term. Move to a new place and that's not there. So the lack of any kind of a safety net (social or financial) keeps people from just being able to "move".

That's totally not counting the xenophobic nature of people to reject anyone new in their community.
TL;DR Arrie the xenophobe says Africans are stupid for living where they live. Should they move to cooler climates, they're sure to find friendly landmines to welcome them.

Also if Africans don’t like being poor, they should just be rich instead

What's wrong with that?
That's what we westerners have been doing for the last 150 years, are you saying that it's wrong for Africans to do the same?
Are you saying that they should just stay poor?
And by the way, since the "Africans" seriously adopted market economy they have rapidly pulled themselves out of poverty, quite a few African countries have a well of middle class now.

Let's peek into complex system theory a bit.
One rule of (handling) complexity says: "Simple answers to complex questions, as well as simple solutions for complex problems, are generally wrong / going to fail".

Nuff said.

If anybody continues joking about AIX (RS6000's), i'm gonna post about AS400's or S/390's Tongue
Fun fact: When travelling from an AIX based course at the IBM technology center in Montpellier, my car broke down in Aix de Provence.

I believe Alexander proved that to be wrong.

That's just bullshit, and I never singled out Africans.

Oh I miss the times it snowed in NL.... So beautiful...

how can this world be so unfair? Africa:

here in africa we have to live with air conditioning inside the house because the heat is very high, it looks like the sun decided to punish the Africans

It's not the world that is unfair, the world does not give a fuck.
It's the people that's stupid. If you don't like super hot climate, move somewhere else, if you don't like super cold climate, move somewhere else, but don't whine about your situation and do nothing about it.

so the people in africa that dont like the hot climate should move somewhere else?

to sweden i suppose? interesting comment you did there.

There are other countries within Africa with normal climate you know.

You are getting closer to the moment when you’ll be able to buy Greece.

A mediocre island will suffice. Btw it's Sir Cryptotourist now. Cool

I would add insult to injury and buy it with shitcoins.

Euro it is then. Tongue

I like that, all us hatters should add Sir to our names.
Could you please fix that Infofront.
