Oxford scientists might have a vaccin on the market by september, they had been developing it for another corona virus but it seems to work on covid. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/27/world/europe/coronavirus-vaccine-update-oxford.html?referringSource=articleShare

"Most other teams have had to start with small clinical trials of a few hundred participants to demonstrate safety. But scientists at the university’s Jenner Institute had a head start on a vaccine, having proved in previous trials that similar inoculations — including one last year against an earlier coronavirus — were harmless to humans.

That has enabled them to leap ahead and schedule tests of their new coronavirus vaccine involving more than 6,000 people by the end of next month, hoping to show not only that it is safe, but also that it works.

The Oxford scientists now say that with an emergency approval from regulators, the first few million doses of their vaccine could be available by September — at least several months ahead of any of the other announced efforts — if it proves to be effective.

Now, they have received promising news suggesting that it might."

Well then speaking of unmentionable-chan, we have enough info to do some back of the envelope calculations at this point.

Over half of infected show no symptoms. They don't even know they have her inside them. Of those who do get symptoms, maybe a fifth will get sick enough to get tested. Those are the official numbers, so the actual number of infected is likely to be ten times as high.

From that group, maybe a fifth will get sick enough to need treatment. And of those, maybe a fifth die. So that gives us a 0.4% death rate overall. Let's assume I'm wildly off and call it 4%. Even then not bad enough to shut down the entire global economy, much less implement the kind of draconian measures that some here have personally experienced.

Is anything missing? Is the current state of the world anything other than an authoritarian power grab?

So you are saying Sweden did nothing wrong?
It all depends on the kind of disease. If this had been an extremely virulent Ebola then sweden would now be depopulated and ripe for takeover by almost anyone. But this is not ebola. It is a worse variant of the flu or close enough (bar secondary infections being worse which still remains to be seen).

With a very deadly plague, you want to stay the fuck home until it passes. But a plague that kills barely anyone, and mostly the old and weak and infirm, that also happens to be a virus (and therefore might mutate) you want to get through it as fast as the medical system can cope.

So as far as the Swedish question, they are a highly irresponsible lot, an inferiour version of the foolish norwegians. But in this case it may just be that they lucked out and happened on the correct answer.

There is no such thing as inferior to Norwegians

Remember back in early January when I had a cold? I just read on some local fb groups that back in late December early January a lot of people here in Scania were sick with what is now known as covid symptoms.
A consultant working for Tetra pak in Lund got a covid like cold after coming back from a vacation in northern Italy and infected his co workers, a woman working in a shopping mall in Löddeköpinge also had those symptoms and she said that many of her work mates also had those symptoms.
Nobody thought anything of it at the time, just a seasonal cold.

Now a whole ward at a hospital in Helsingborg, Scania, was just tested for covid, and 50% was positive.
The rate of sick and dead here in Scania is also surprisingly low, actually lower then in Denmark that is in lockdown.

I, and many with me, now thinks that maybe we here in the south got the virus early on, maybe a mild string, when it was still unknown here in Sweden, and that's why we are doing so good now, we might already have or be close to heard immunity.

But I have no idea where you live, so that might not be a good option for you.
A bit south of Sweden. There are several online shop still indicating they have them in stock, but after contacting by phone they all say they ran out. If you can wait for shipment from China that may work. eventually. Using phones as USB webcam is a mess, require android debug systems, phones overheating, wrong sound source, 2 second latency, etc.

One of the largest retailers here (big enough to keep Amazon out of this country):
https://www.coolblue.nl/en/webcams except for the 2 most expensive, that whole page is "temporary sold out"

What about auction sites?

Tradera (swedish auction site big enought to keep Ebay out of Sweden, they have tried twice) has a a few.
Here's a cheap used one, (so far, ends tomorrow). https://www.tradera.com/item/120326/395875964/logitech-quickcam-fusion-webkamera.

Here's another one, brand new and unopened. https://www.tradera.com/item/120326/395684928/webcam-webkamera-logitech-c270-hd-ny-

Post from SE to NL is pretty quick.

Why are you people hoarding food?
At lest where I live there is no shortage of anything except hand sanitizer and masks, ..

Still hard to get headphones or webcams here, unless you want to pay over 1K for a USB webcam.

I thought "that can't be right", but then I checked what the major electronics shops had in their stores here in southern Sweden, and they were all out.

But after some googling I found some ranging from 30-500 USD equivalent, both in swedish online shops and on Amazon and Aliexpress.

Just went to the bulk food store and bought about $1k worth of food (mainly meat) and vitamins.

They were out of freezers otherwise I would have bought one (and more meat).

Things like this are why I did bitcoin. Not to buy a lambo.
One downside to my current status that I have noted is the lack of freezer space. A good deep freezer doesn't use much power and should be able to run on the solar/battery arrays. I'll keep that in mind and get one later when things are more normal, live and learn.

Why are you people hoarding food?
At lest where I live there is no shortage of anything except hand sanitizer and masks, and that is getting back in stock slowly as well.
I go shopping every third day, because that's when its time to buy more milk, I usually shop right before closing to avoid crowds, but I have done some daytime shopping too and it wasn't so bad, people were distancing.

Finaly came across a picture of my workstation. When in use there would of course be a headset and maps and all sorts of stuff all around it. Remember we are talking 1980-1990 here.

Edited.

Were you trying to save the world entering numbers in that computer?

I don't want to sound offensive, but this recalls me Lost's Desmond in "Man of Science, Man of Faith".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgsNjTyGsRk

Kind of, you would enter air pressure, wind speed, direction of the wind, temperature, speed of the projectile and possible something more I have forgotten now. And then the computer would use those parameters to make sure the projectile hits what you are aiming at.
The joystick would steer the AA guns shooting in parallell and I would see the target on the screen.
The screen had a x on it in that mode, and when the target was in the x you would let go of the button on top of the joystick and the computer would track automatically, all you had to do was press the pedal and shoot a 8 shot burst, see what happened and repeat until target was destroyed.

Today all this is replaced by the AA version of the CV 90

Price guide for anyone done a disservice by their local walmart and has an A-10 tank killer parked outside waiting for a refill, its the far right one.
https://rense.com/general93/big.htm

2 day and weekly average are in the same place just above with monthly not far below for a boundary either side.   Target downside would be 6400

I have two of these at home.

They are for the 12 cm tornautomatpjäs m/70 that I served at  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_cm_tornautomatpj%C3%A4s_m/70
Actually I seved on the Bofors 40 mm AA guns supporting it, but it was all one unit and we were all in the same underground building. I was controlling the guns from my station in the control room. There is some good pictures of the station and the whole thing online, but they are all in some weird format that I cant open (webp.) but here is the link to the pictures. http://www.skymningslage.se/batteri-landsort/

Äh, I'm going to bed, have a new book to read, good night all you patriots and oikophobes.

buy whatever you want Ibian

I'd hire a Mexican waaay before any of the white tweaker lowlife around here.

Honest God fearing folk in my experience.

Ibian?

sorry, that was unintentional, though perhaps Freudian, I will own that

Well I actually agree with Ibian on most things, but he just has this tendency to take everything to its extreme.

Oh man, WalMart dropped artillery from their approved ammunition sales.

where am I going to get my 357mm now?

That's a big gun.
I actually have two 120 mm artillery grenades at home, one on each side of the door, they are huge (and a couple of 40 mm AA grenades).

the Mexicans are the best folks we got

at least they work

If the Mexicans are the best folks, then why isn't mexico the best country and why are they all trying to go to the USA.
Or could it be that USA has the best folks and that's why the USA is the best country and that is the reason why everybody south of the border wants to move there?

It's because we have the petrodollar and enforce it with the largest military on the planet.  This means that we are able to export our inflation and are thus fantastically wealthy.

Or did...and were...

No, I don't buy that, that's just oikophobia. Canada is just as wealthy and they hardly have any army at all and no petrodollars. (Sorry Canada, but you really don't).

Quote from vapourminer

"i though i read that some of those crossing from mexico were just passing though on the way to canada, the usa is just another shithole to them apparently."

Maybe they are confusing California with the USA.

Canada?

nope

borders closed

i wonder when canada is gonna build a wall to keep us out?

They will if you keep letting all those Mexicans in.

If I had to point out one single item that most of all represents what I in the 80s would have thought of as truly sci-fi it's the smartphone.
It's a truly amazing gizmo, so futuristic that no one even thought about it in the 80s, at least I have not seen or read about anything like it.

maybe so for the current form, but not in general:
https://www.destination-innovation.com/how-startrek-inspired-an-innovation-your-cell-phone/
or
https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelvenables/2013/04/03/captain-kirks-call-to-spock/#1ce42077a92c

btw, sci-fi already described various currently nonexistent cell phone forms, including mostly transparent.

Yes the mobile phone is described in just about every sci-fi book. I even have a sci-fi book from the late 1800s about a guy who finds himself in the year2000, and they get quite a few things right, for example the mobile phone and credit cards.
They also got a lot of things wrong, no prisons (criminality is treated and cured in hospitals), public kitchens and public washingplaces makes servants and the likes unnecessary and so on. It's quite a socialistic kind of future actually.
But the smart phone I have never seen described, I mean it's not even a phone, just a screen that can do just about anything you want if you have the app.

I don't see a principal difference.
Physical form always changes, and i am not sure about the 80ies, but star trek next gen had ipad-like forms (PADDS) on which they could do essentially anything.
the only difference from the current cell phone is slightly larger size.
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/09/how-star-trek-artists-imagined-the-ipad-23-years-ago/

google search star trek ipad-there are many forms, some resembling a large cell phone.

like this:
https://mikecanex.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/picardorangepadd.jpg

Idk, to me a smartphone and a I pad are two very different things. One is a small portable phone/screen, the other a large bulky weird looking computer, like a lap top missing its lower part. But that's just me.
