If I had to point out one single item that most of all represents what I in the 80s would have thought of as truly sci-fi it's the smartphone. It's a truly amazing gizmo, so futuristic that no one even thought about it in the 80s, at least I have not seen or read about anything like it.

I was planning on filling all my petrol cans today to take advantage of the low petrol prices, glad I didn't have time. It's gonna be interesting to se what the petrol prices will be the coming days.
Nothing. Petrol prices are based on Jun future that's now trading at 22 USD. Plus taxes and other non-oli related costs reduce price volatility. So don't expect many nice surprises here. Dammit. Ok I can wait a month for cheap gas.

probably simulate all that analog gear with a raspberry pi now. well except for the analog "sound" perhaps.
Fairlight CMI - Computer Musical Instrument. Not much of that 'analog' sound. that whole wall on the right is Elektor Formant modules, nary a 1 or 0 in sight I think you guys are talking about two different videos, the Analog Session vs Hancock

"Seasonal flu kills 291000 to 646000 people worldwide each year"
If we treated Covid-19 like we treat the flu, we'd have millions dead each year.
We still will. If it kills even 1% and it actually does spread 3 times as fast as the regular flu, that's 78 million dead right there. Don't think I have forgotten, Ibian. I'm still waiting on your wonderful prediction of "millions of people to die" from Covid-19 to come true. Are we still on track for "millions and millions dead"? Or is it, better luck next year? Well, he did say if it kills 1% and if it spreads 3 times as fast. And I don't know if he means 1% of the population or 1% of infected. Anyhow ze Germans who I actually trust when it comes to statistics say ""The findings suggest the mortality rate for the virus in Germany is just 0.37 per cent — five times lower than current estimates." Now if that is 0,37% of infected or of the whole population is unclar. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/04/09/many-people-may-already-have-immunity-coronavirus-german-study/So, Ibian how many dead is it with these new numbers? (I'm to lazy to calculate myself, sorry).

Life returning to normal in Denmark. Kids about to go back to school, cashiers are becoming as rude and dismissive as they always have been. Can't wait to see if we catch up to Sweden within 3 weeks.
I'm not so sure if Denmark wants to follow Sweden herd immunity tactics, immunity takes years and may not even be possible but I guess someone had to try. They shot themselves in the balls. That chart only shows countrys below sweden, the fact of the matter is that Belgium, UK and France is way above Sweden. There is a chart of that from the same source in this article. https://unherd.com/2020/04/jury-still-out-on-swedish-coronavirus-strategy/"But hold on a sec. That chart is carefully designed to look bad for Sweden — the timeline is extended in a way that makes the curve appear more dramatic, and the countries it features are only those which have lower deaths per million. Here’s the same exact chart, from the same source, compared with a different set of fully ‘locked down’ European countries:" "Suddenly the Swedish curve looks the best — and flattening out rapidly. The truth is, the Swedish epidemic is far from the out of control disaster its critics would like to believe. Yesterday, there were 12 deaths from Covid-19; the previous day there were 17; the day before that there were 77 and the day before that there were 106. We could expect levels to catch up after this Easter weekend, but it can hardly be described as exponential growth." The only way forward is immunity, either from vaccination or heard immunity, All those countries in lockdown right now have to let their citizens out on the street at some point, and when that happens people will start getting sick again. In the end the number of deaths per million will probably be pretty much the same in most countries. Unless you keep your population in lockdown until a vaccin is ready of course, but by then that countrys economy will be dead.

...Paul Drake, who runs Drakes supermarket in Adelaide, says he gave the customer the middle finger after the man tried to return approximately 5,000 rolls of toilet paper and 150 one-litre bottles of hand sanitizer earlier this month....
Supply and demand is literally what bitcoin is built on. There is nothing wrong with trying to make a buck. Yep. Paul Drake had the supply and wasn't giving back the bucks he made. But not letting people sell on Ebay makes no sense, If some people are willing to pay i higher price, then let them, their policy right now lets no one buy them and that just keeps necessary goods from entering the market, wich makes it even harder to find said goods. You seem to be detached from the reality of the price gouging attempts of what people were actually doing. E-bay likely took the right policy stance in order to attempt to lessen backlash that it might get if it were to allow people to hoard various supplies in ways that are intended to price gouge and would thereby encourage more and more of that behavior. I'm taking you of ignore just this once. Thank you so much. You are so, so kind. If more and more people would start selling at high prices, the price would go down due to increased supply, it's economics 101. You really should get an education.
I am familiar with quite a few economics principles, including supply and demand principles. So don't go lording your bullshit supposed superior knowledge, when your comment in and of itself seems to be an attempt at oversimplifying matters in such a way that just shows that you do not sufficiently understand the situation, and that you don't even seem to be trying to actually understand rather than belting out your nonsense armchair philosophies that make little to no sense. If more and more people hoard supplies, that are not being produced, they would be creating an additional middle man (themselves as profiteers), which they may be able to corner the market and/or also cause others to engage in the same kinds of profiteering/hoarding behaviors. Maybe after supply chains (production) ramp back up, they will be able to get back to normal and prices will migrate back down to normal, but in the meantime.. 1 month, 2 months or maybe even a year or more, there would be people who are incentivized to engage in hoarding and gouging behaviors... I am glad when they get fucked, like the toilet paper and hand-sanitizer hoarder in the above Adelaide example. By the way, you likely had noticed that there were a lot of stores that had to adapt their policies after-the-fact to attempt to create purchasing limits on customers in order to attempt to allow customers to be able to buy supplies and food rather than one shopper coming into stores and strategically buying up all of the supplies.. and fucking the regular customers of those stores and causing even additional panicking. Sometimes measures need to be taken to attempt to lessen some of the internal evils (or greed or desires to take advantage of a crisis of other people). You are so easy to wind up. Back on ignore you go.

Hello everybody, had some catching up to do. Hope everybody is ok, and my condolences to those of you who have lost friends.
Gas is so cheap right now that I'm actually driving more now then before the chinese fever, sometimes I just drive around on the country roads and enjoy the spring greenery.
I have also noticed that I did not have to make any adjustments to my lifestyle to follow the recommendations. I guess I'm more of a loner than I thought.
We still have no lockdowns and everything except high schools and other adult schools are open as usual. The only restriction is a ban on gatherings of 50 peoole or more and a strong recommendation to keep 2m apart, stay at home and only go shopping when necessary. I hope it stays that way.

So I have this mental health issue where I just prefer to be socially isolated and converse anonymously online. (and usually drink alone and be a prick) Hmmmm... in these times, maybe it wasn't a mental health issue after all, but rather some weird evolutionary survival gene I inherited....
That's just standard behavior in northern Europe. That's probably why we are so much better than everybody else. And humbler.

cholesterol Cholesterol gets a really bad rap for some reason. Every single cell in our body contains it, we literally need it to live. It is also needed to produce estrogen, testosterone, vitamin D and it heals injuries from inflammation in the arteries (often caused by too much sugar/alcohol/other unhealthy modern not-actually-food). In the process of healing it leaves scar tissue, which is probably part of why it gets the blame for clogged arteries. Additionally, if we don't get enough of it from our food the body just produces the missing amount. It's one of the unsung heroes in our body, more or less. That's absolutely right, I have seen a paper that concluded that older people with high cholesterol actually lived longer than those with low cholesterol.

Just popped in to share some info I picked up. This first one probably applies to most of us in here, since this is mostly a geriatric thread. I just watched a debate program with some doctors, and it turns out that cholesterol is an important part of the immune system, apparently the immune system uses enormous amount of cholesterol when fighting infections, especially the "bad" colesterol, so people on statins or other cholesterol lowing meds have a greater risk of dying. This might be one of the reasons elderly patients are dying more than others (basically all elderly are on statins) Amlopidin, a blood pressure lower, is also suspected to make things worse, one of the side effects of that med is shortness of breath. All the dead from Wuhan had very low cholesterol levels in their blood. So, to conclude Do not take anything that lowers your cholesterol levels and stay away from Amlopidin during the pandemic. Personally I don't use any cholesterol lowers, there is a lot of evidence that the whole idea that it causes blocked arteries is a mistake. And it also causes muscle pain including heart pain and bad memory, the cells and brain need cholesterol to work properly, apparently 25% of the brain is cholesterol. It also makes you low (mentally) it did that to me, when I went of my statins some 10 years ago I almost got euphoric for a week or so. I was om the max dosis and I had a shitload of side effects, headaches that would last for weeks, runny nose, aches, and the mental thing, I was also slower in reaction, I noticed, when I hit the curb and signs sometimes as I was driving. The reason why Italy became the European epicenter turns out to be some 60 000 Chinese workers that work in Italian factories in Lombardy, just so they can put the "made in Italy" label on them. https://spectator.org/coronavirus-the-price-of-luxury/And socialists now call for a united socialist union of Europe https://www.socialist.net/coronavirus-exposes-the-myth-of-european-unity.htmI think that is it for today, stay safe and make sure your cholesterol is high.
