18844  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Having trouble grabbing bitcoin price on: December 21, 2011, 12:12:45 AM
I use this code to grab my current rates on http://spendbitcoins.com:

Code:
<?php
$a
=ouvrirpage("http://mtgox.com/api/0/data/ticker.php");
$res=(json_decode($atrue));
$last round ($res['ticker']['sell'], 2);

echo
$last;

function
ouvrirpage($site){
$ch curl_init($site);
curl_setopt($chCURLOPT_USERAGENT"Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1");
curl_setopt($chCURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER1);
$res curl_exec($ch);
curl_close($ch);
return $res;
}

?>

Normally, this returns the current sell rate at mtgox. The mtgox api is still up, but instead of returning the current sell rate, it is returning 0.

Actually, I normally use the tradehill api, but it is down at the moment (https://api.tradehill.com/APIv1/USD/Ticker). Can anyone tell me how to get my rates up and running again? I hate my site being broken at any time!

you should account for the possibility that the website could be down or to busy, to respond.
consider making a corn job that would update a value on your database IF everything checked out.

+1 Wikipedia has become an active member of the status quo propaganda squad.

 Their "lmoderators" are state-sponsored or bank-sponsored "experts", mostly from academia, i.e with plenty of time on their hands to exert censorship on anything even remotely likely to disturb the establishment.

Providing all the knowledge in the world for free to everyone?

"Status quo propaganda".

Of course wikipedia is not gonna accept/endorse Bitcoins when the only current precedents by lawmakers have been negative. Wikipedia is a big fucking deal, at present its much more important than Bitcoin. It's a bit like Ron Paul not accepting Bitcoin directly, and noone blames him for that.

meh, wikipedia is really cool. but they are being very uncool when it comes to bitcoin. and with no good reason.

simply put they aren't will to take a tiny risk by Validating Bitcoin. they must believe bitcoin is Dirt, and not worth while....

would you donate to someone that thinks like this?
18847  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: who uses MtGox CAD$ on: December 19, 2011, 07:07:55 AM
Liquidity, although Virtex is a lot better than it used to be.  It wasn't long ago that if you wanted to buy $1000 worth of Bitcoins, you'd end getting 50 or 60 for the going rate and the rest would be way over-priced.

wasn't that true for MtGox CAD$ too?

Virtex has always had more volume then mtgox CAD, so wouldn't them mean Liquidity has always been better on Virtex
i think MtGox's CAD is hurting the Canadian bitcoin market.

18848  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / who uses MtGox CAD$ on: December 19, 2011, 06:45:39 AM
why would anyone use mtGox CAD$!? Huh

please keep the CAD$ on the Canadian virtual exchange.
18849  Economy / Economics / Re: Investing in BTC to Preserve Wealth - Silly or Practical ? on: December 19, 2011, 06:36:50 AM
gold has had its 15 years of up trend... Going Extremely high a few months ago. but whats stopping gold from dropping. isn't this a highly speculative market as well?

the safest place to store your wealth is in your own life, enjoy your money!

buy a house! buy some beer, buy a super hot computer, wtv you want.
buy some bitcoins and spend them! support something you believe in.

money / things are not wealth

invest in your life!
18850  Economy / Speculation / Re: how else is waiting for a sizeable drop to buy more coins again? on: December 19, 2011, 06:16:39 AM
why would i buy bitcoin and then buy gold with those bitcoin??

1) to support something i believe in
2) to get something i think could be fun to look at, the gold...
3) to save money by buying my bitcoin on the cheep!

Why add another layer of fees and charges into the mix?  Why not go cash->gold instead of cash->btc->gold?  There are fees at every stage and you're adding more.

Just grab the cash and go to your local gold bullion dealer.  Support a local business.  You can speculate on bitcoin's price without buying gold.

 Roll Eyes

it could be that i bought my coins at 2.5  Cheesy
but i didn't buy enough for a 1oz of gold   Undecided

Prices start as low as 1.7$ for a pack (prices may vary because of the BTC/USD currency rate). However our goal is to keep the prices as low as possible.

all i see is cigarettes starting at 5.77฿ - where's the cheep stuff?

Hello,

The price is for a carton, 10 packs of cigarettes.

oh i c lol, wow that's a really good price

I'm going to look so cool smoking European Cigarettes, paid for in bitcoin! Cool hehehe
18857  Economy / Speculation / Re: how else is waiting for a sizeable drop to buy more coins again? on: December 18, 2011, 11:56:51 PM
there are currently 3 times more bids than asks in the orderbook; in these conditions a drop is very unlikely.

Not that unlikely.  There was a giant sell-off not too long ago and the order book looked similar.  In fact, several times over the past 6 months there have been large sell-offs when the money in bids was significantly greater than the asks.

if i do a sell order of say 20,000coins at $1 each... (i wish i had 20,000 coins  Tongue)

wont i sell to all the bids all at once, so they don't have time to take off their bid?

That really depends on the exchange. In mtgox at least transactions are processed sequentially, so bots have enough time to shift phantom bid walls. If you don't believe me just try it yourself. If you sell a large order of coins at market price you won't see the USD balance in your account reach the final value instantaneously. You'll see it jumping up in increments. This all happens in less than 2 seconds, but that's plenty of time for a bot to react.

well that's gay, because of this the bid / ask walls mean almost nothing.

dose TH work like this too?
dose wall street work like this too?
