Where's Proudhon when you need him?
Proudhon.... Proudhon had a change of heart and decided to take a loss on his short, and go long then this happened:

And it just so happened that a near perfect triangle formed during the last few days pointing towards a 'big' move right before a hack. trust in the charts here guys But how can one possibly act that quickly? I mean...it broke 4.8 with a weird sell...then about 10 seconds later it was down to 4.6. How does one really get a position in that time? by placing an order, and waiting?

Guy can't sell those coins on MtGox yet, they'd be too easily traced back and MtGox would seize them in cooperation with bitcoinica.
The selling going on isn't stolen coins. Will take weeks or months to get enough confirmations and transactions for the stolen coins to be sufficiently mixed that the thief can sell them.
yup, and Mt.Gox thinks that too As far as we can tell the Bitcoin sold on Mt.Gox are not stolen ones and there are few chance that these coins will be ever sold via our network/Mt.Gox

hopefully we get a bounce from this from 4.60
my gf just said "i hope it goes to 0" 0$ bitcoins here we come
|
|
|
Oh. I was wrong in my first read of things.
Get this:
"Bitcoinica lost 43,554 BTC from Linode compromise, suspicious TXIDs publicized"
That is BTC.. not USD.
So we are looking at 50K in BTC... 200,000+ dollars worth of BTC that will be sold.
If he DUMPS it NOW we'd be at 4.20 he'd be filling a lot of orders making buyers very happy! wouldn't that be the gr8est thing thing ever?
|
|
|
I would lower your other buy orders if i was you. Also sell what u have. Market has to absorb 50+k of btc soon. Prob more. That is just bitcoinica's.
meh, i dont think we'll be seeing these coins on the mtgox market... and beside why would anyone DUMP 50K btc on any market, only to watch it bounce back? that would be crazy. I keep my bid up HOPING someone takes a big fat smelly dump. 50K BTC stolen mean 2 things 1) someone hacked his way into the big player position 2) someone needs to buy his way back into the big player position so I'm expecting swigs from all this, but in the end we are going right back where we started less then 5 more then 4

Finally some action one of my orders were filled yaye!

I have created a MtGox acount ten month ago, and transfer about 10 btc to that account. I tranfer more to that account later. Then, I leave it along for six months. Now I setup a site, which will provide customer with BTC if they can get high score in a little game. So I need those BTC. But I cannot log into MtGox. System told me password is wrong , although I think password is right. I also try to recover my password, but I got no email.
So I contact MtGox support team and they told me that, 'it is highly likely that your account was disabled due to inactivity. We can still enable your account and recover your balances as long as we can locate it. Unfortunately, the only way to locate your account within our database is through your Merchant ID. Do you still have this available?'
Of course I have forget my merchantID, can you remember yours?
I think I know the reason why they insist on MerchantID, maybe they have no index on user e-mail address in their database, so they can not location a record with e-mail address only. But I can remember when was my account created, and this can give a span of merchantID, thus a record can be located with a simple sql clause.
So I give them this information, but they still refuse to active my account, they said, 'Unfortunately, the only way to locate your account within our database is through your Merchant ID. Do you still have this available? It should be in the format of MTG#####X. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. '
Do you think they are reasonable on this issue? What shall I do now?
it doesn't seem to make sense that they can't find your account with your e-mail.... how do they know which Merchant ID goes with which e-mail? weird....

I'm half a noob when it comes to exactly how the blockchain can be used to track transactions, but my understanding is that since we have the hash that stole the coins, even if he tries to wash them can't we see at least where big chunks will go? can we track this money through the block chain?
funny I was wondering the very same thing. I don't get why anyone would steal bitcoin since when you go to "cash out" it could conceivably be red-flagged - then again they could do small amounts BUT STILL what thief wants to sit there and do $50 cash out at a time ? can anyone explain this? right... anyone trying to follow the bits?

@JeffK Full disclosure request:
What is your relationship with Linode?
Two year customer last month, never had problems but I've been around the Bitcoin community long enough to be suspicious of people who "lose" bitcoins or have them "stolen" Ok, you're going to be suspicious of Gavin, the bitcoinica guy, and Slush? he is suspicious of Linode itself.
|
|
|
Major hacks today.. bitcoinica and Slush.. hosting provided by Linode have a security hole to patch somewhere.. This can only mean one thing...... We's going down maybe one of their employes is the "security hole"?
