1262  Economy / Services / Re: I was hacked (1170btc stolen) - 500btc max BOUNTY on: July 18, 2014, 03:52:10 PM
so... how did the hacker find said link? where did he get it from?

That is a million $ question, which still seems to be unanswered.

My assumptions, also, as seen from the second thread of this incident.
hacker was someone Klee knew personally. I read it was a short brunette in her 30s.
So, it seems that the person, or a group of persons, knew what klee held, and in a personal meet, planted a trojan on Klee's system.

If all this is true, than that is a SEVERE breach of trust. pathetic.

Possible. As part of the "deal" I would have requested how to hack took place. Although, if it was physical access, that would have probably narrowed down the list of suspect by quite a large margin.

I expect after this bitaddress.org is one of kLee's favorite sites.

I wouldn't sell my BTER account. If I were to sell my stake, I would request BTC in an escrow like http://cosign.co.in/ and once I got my distribution release the coins to the buyer and he would release the escrow.

That said, I'm not selling my stake. I'm a long term speculator, not a short term day trader. Also, I have a very small stake anyway.

1264  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [PRE-ANN] [VIA] Viacoin on: July 18, 2014, 03:43:14 PM
Hey guys!

We have just added Viacoin to Cryptonator so now you can use all its free features

Should you own an iPhone or an Android device, we also have all these in our free mobile apps for iOS / Android

Cheers

Does your app allow for setting up a portfolio of coins so a person can keep track of their balance. Similar to any portfolio snap in on any portal like yahoo or whatever.

If not, is anyone aware of such an app or site?
1265  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [NAUT] Nautiluscoin - First Coin w/Stabilization Fund - Digishield on: July 18, 2014, 03:35:12 PM
Im in the process of getting some BTC so i can get some Naut, just getting setup at this point.
I downloaded the OSX wallet yesterday and it synced relatively quick then i encrypted it (have no coin in there so not sure if i should have even bothered).

This is very important, and it is good that you did it. While you have no coin now, the wallet.dat file is the keys to your kinddom. You must protect it by:

1. Encrypting it with a strong password. Protect this password. Don't put it in a text file on your PC. If you do store it somewhere, make sure that is encrypted with another password, like in a password manager like LastPass or 1Password or Keepass.

2. Backing it up.

It sounds like you did step 1. Also make sure you do step 2.

So, yes, you are doing the correct things. Also, make sure you do step 2 often. Normally the wallet.dat isn't modified, but it might be if you do a spend. (I'm not sure if this wallet has additional change address pre-generted or not.) But, I re-back mine up after I do any spend and after I add any receive addresses or send addresses.

Also you can double-check your password is correct before sending coins, just try to send and it asks for your password. Might sound stupid but I saved the wrong password for my ltc wallet and it took me two days to figure out.

If you can unlock the wallet, then you have the correct password. But, yes, verify you can do that before you send any coins to one of your addresses.

Coinbase is so much fun aren't they

I can insta buy from coinbase. (up to a certain amount of course) No waiting needed.

How could this Scrypt coin make 600 BTC ICO... only because of this developer? I don't really see anything new here...

because people read the abundance of information available to them.

Read blog.viacoin.com, once you do you'll realize there's only this coin doing this- not just because of the developer.

I disagree with that. Many things he is talking about some other coins are doing and or working on. For example, NXT has the Asset Exchange and soon will release a Digital Goods Store and Monetary System.

Crypti is designed to allow custom block chains to run on their block chain, allowing for other apps to run on top of the block chain.

Those are both very similar to what the dev here is talking about. But, still, I invested due to the devs reputation, the low mining rewards which will mean miners will have to sell at a good high price to make a profit, which will only help the coin. This is actually the first POW coin I am holding other than Bitcoin actually atm.

Hey all.

Complete beginner to crypto's here so be gentle.

Im in the process of getting some BTC so i can get some Naut, just getting setup at this point.
I downloaded the OSX wallet yesterday and it synced relatively quick then i encrypted it (have no coin in there so not sure if i should have even bothered).

Opened it today to sync it up again and it won't sync. It has been stuck on the same amount of blocks processed for quite some time.

My question:
Is this normal? Is it not syncing because i have encrypted it? I honestly have no idea and I'm the type of person who likes to always know what is going on.

Sorry if it a dumb question but any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks all

It's nothing to worry about, give it a while and it'll sync. We're going proof of stake to remedy this problem.

Thanks Doging, much appreciated

I hoping to buy some naut before proof of stake comes in….will it make a difference if i buy before or after?

It doesn't make a technical difference. Coins you buy now will also be yours after the fork to PoS.

IMHO, liking one is not mutually exclusive with liking the other.

How far can crypto go when we need to add IMHO to such common sense statements?   Undecided

It is common sense to some but not to others. I think many people feel that crypto is a zero sum game. One coin must do poorly for another to do well. I don't think this is the case at all. however, I do think this is the wild west and the majority of the coins will not really go anywhere.

There's no doubt, bitcoin is the blue chip stock here. There are some other alts that are good stock too, others that are penny stocks. I also think the majority of crypto coins will not be used for commerce but only for day trading. It is also my opinion that the majority of people in coins now are either day traders or buying it as a speculative investment. I fall into the later category.

But, the truth is, as of this day, the problem crypto coins were originally designed to solve, while real isn't what their current primary use is.

wrt to the AE, I think most people using it, even thought they say they are not selling securities are actually selling securities. That is a regulated activity in most places. So, we will have to see if some asset that doesn't deliver on a promise ever gets sued and that will set a precedence.

But, I digress. This isn't really about Qora, specifically. I'm sure there are other threads here that discuss these issues.
1271  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [NAUT] Nautiluscoin - First Coin w/Stabilization Fund - Digishield on: July 18, 2014, 01:42:26 AM

People don't get rich by getting interest from a bank, they get rich by being highly productive and adding huge value to the economy.

I'm sorry, I disagree with this. This is the lesson that Wall Street and Uncle Sam wants you to learn. However, having been an adult involved with "real business" for over a decade now, I am quite certain there is extremely little correlation between _actual_ productivity and wealth.

If there was, plumbers, farmers, construction workers, miners (who work in actual mines) and garbage men would get paid the most. These are people who really bust their ass and _actually_ work hard all day long performing _actual work_.

Most business is a fucking joke. I work as a healthcare fraud analyst and I'll be the first to admit the entire healthcare industry (in America) is a sick joke where people die at the end.

If you work in an office or sit in front of a computer all day, you know nothing of hard work, stop pretending like you do.

Moving around numbers from one bucket to another, lunch meetings with people with plastic smiles and fancy suits, trying to out-think, out-maneuver or out-sleazeball your competition -- none of this is ACTUAL work.

Its "new work" we made up for ourselves to make ourselves feel important as we slowly collapse the rest of society which we ironically need to sustain inordinately spoiled lifestyles.

I'm still waiting for your solution?! How do we solve the "rich get richer problem"?

i got stake but shows unverified.

Just export your private key and import to Viacoin-Qt. Instructions in the main ANN thread.

The private key is the twelve words right?

No, that's a seed. The private key is about 50 characters.

Posts #11 and #16 will help you.

So I did this and now my balance shows in VIA-qt. what do I do with the viaelectrum wallet? Just leave it? Do I have to delete it?

You do not "have" to delete it. You have to decide if you want to use a deterministic lightweight wallet or a non-deterministic full weight wallet. Both have their pros and cons.

Getting back on track with my series on really good things that are happening in NXT, heres a countdown timer:

http://freenxt.org/james_announcement.php#

12 hours to the announcement, whatever it may be.......

I hear by announce that the countdown time has reached ZERO! All hail.

But seriously, why don't people just wait to announce stuff and do it when they are ready. This whole announcement foreplay is just ridiculous hyperbole.

PoS Update

Hi all, its late on Thursday and I thought that we would have the final PoS product by now.  Actually, I was told we would have it by Tuesday, but I gave us a few more days since there have been issues already.

Since I set a (loose) date of today, I wanted to make sure I posted so that you all knew I was here.

We do not have the final product and I am extremely frustrated.  Integrity is the most valuable asset we have, especially in crypto - I do not like having to write that we are delayed...again...but this is the case.

I apologize for continually missing self imposed deadlines.  I will continue to update on the progress.

-BK

Sorry to hear that. As I said, you couldn't win by giving a date. In the long run, another 1 day or 10 days won't make too much of a difference.
1276  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [NAUT] Nautiluscoin - First Coin w/Stabilization Fund - Digishield on: July 18, 2014, 01:24:03 AM

OK. You're a billionaire. You put a billion dollars into a Bank of America savings account. They give you an interest rate of 2% per year. You close the account after 1 year with an extra $20,000,000 interest.

You now are rich on 2% a year.

$20,000,000 IS rich. Even next to 1 billion. Its not a matter of relativity. Its already been scientifically demonstrated that money stops buying happiness at about $70k a year; everything after that is just people attempting to make up for their personal shortcomings.

whether rich get richer has nothing to do with goal of crypto which is decentralized currency(my opinion)

I disagree. What good is crypto if it maintains the greatest disparity in wealth that the world has ever seen?

So, what do you propose. If the interest is HIGHER, those with more money just get more. Or, do you think people with less stake should get higher rewards?
1277  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [NAUT] Nautiluscoin - First Coin w/Stabilization Fund - Digishield on: July 18, 2014, 01:23:09 AM

I submit if you had a billion $'s to put into the bank, you were rich already. So, while 2% of that is a huge amount to someone that is poor, it is nothing to someone that has a billion $'s.

So, your example is flawed. People don't get rich by getting interest from a bank, they get rich by being highly productive and adding huge value to the economy. (I'm not counting people that fell out of a rich crotch or won the lottery. This is why I favor the 0% tax rate btw).

v13 running fine. .exe works fine. Thank you Qora.

Is that correct?

Code:
{
"knownpeers":[

"162.243.170.76",
"42.159.153.145",

"193.242.149.63",
"113.250.226.131"
],
"minconnections": 10,
"generatorkeycaching": true
}
That's not needed. I didn't change anything and only unlocked and locked my account and I'm forging.

Interesting. The dev said it was needed. You say it isn't.

How do you know it is forging? There is no indicator in the wallet UI that I am aware of.
1279  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [NAUT] Nautiluscoin - First Coin w/Stabilization Fund - Digishield on: July 17, 2014, 11:56:45 PM
but you have to admit seaman is fond of it speaks up and tweets about it and that is good , more eyes on it, but we really need this POS ann and transition asap.. well isn't Thursday tomorrow? let's hope we wont have wait another 2-3weeks

True dat. I suppose any press is good press.

Not that it matters but I'm not on board with the whole PoS fad... So... you're just paying out interest, rewarding people for holding their coins... How is this any different from our current financial system where the rich get richer by virtue of being rich?

I thought the point of crypto was to get away from the obviously unfair playing field that had been created by the dollar.

I like NAUT based on the simple fact that its connection to Brian Kelly makes it more likely to get noticed by Wall Street. On the other hand, I kind of hope Wall Street keeps its distance from crypto and doesn't try to lobby for legislation that would once again give them the upper hand in a field of finance. All the novelty and usefulness of cryptocurrency would go right out the window.

I know its a paradoxical stance but such is life.

No one is getting rich on 2% a year.

So once again,

If I import my paper wallet private key onto Vialectrum (mac version), will it automatically give it a sending address (public address)?

Or are there notes I have to keep in mind?

Yes, a private key will always generate the same address which is a fingerprint of the public key. So, if you go to the wallet page it put in your private key, it will display your address and public key.

But, no reason to import your key, because you are gonna HODL! Just keeping the paper wallet is more secure.
