1481  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It is a poor practice to recommend wallet without sharing main tips for newbies on: June 16, 2022, 10:10:59 PM
The only thing about this is, its almost impossible to cover every basis, unless you've written a very thorough guide. Since, there's plenty of things users could run into that could give them a problem, regardless of the wallet. Ideally, they'd be coming into Bitcoin with some sort of base line knowledge, but that isn't the reality, since most are eager to use it, which means they'll likely make mistakes.

Hell, I've made mistakes. Definitely, have learned from them, and luckily it didn't result in loss of coins. I basically came into Bitcoin to give it a try, and potentially earn some money on the side. I don't think I appreciated the actual capability of Bitcoin before using it. I learned that gradually over the first few months, and years.

The only answer to give to newbies is to suggest to do their own researches. There is literature everywhere
That's true, although its often broken up into multiple sources or doesn't cover every problem that someone could run into, it's usually the most common, which is decent enough. However, not exactly fail safe.

If I had a criticism of Bitcoin, would be lack of simplicity. However, I don't see a easy way around it, so it's a pretty weak criticism. I guess it's more of observation then. I actually believe it's one of the reasons we haven't achieved more adoption, than we have.

Bitcoin isn't easy, and to use Bitcoin safely you need to do research. You don't have to do that with cash. Over time, it has become to simple, and dumb downed, that they teach children at a young age about money now.
1482  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Let us know your contribution towards making BTC become successful in your area on: June 16, 2022, 10:03:21 PM
I'll admit, I've almost given up talking about Bitcoin with people around me. They either don't take it seriously, and dismiss it regardless what's said or they take some interest, sound like they start to grasp the idea, but then a week later or a couple of weeks later when the discussion comes up again, they've forgotten everything, and revert to what they previously were saying about it.

I don't know how many times I've told people around me that Bitcoin can be exchanged like any other currency, and they know that I've also taken some of my Bitcoin to pay for trips, and what not. So, it's pretty frustrating which has ultimately led me to not engaging as much as I used too.

Maybe, I'm a bad teacher or maybe its just small talk rather than having genuine interest. I'm not entirely sure.
1483  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cryptos are uncovering our evil sides on: June 16, 2022, 09:58:37 PM
For your first point, we could blame miners for using the grid, or could be point blame to those providing the electricity? I mean, I think the whole situation has been blown way out of proportion, but just to play devil's advocate there, you can't just blame the consumer, otherwise you could blame everyone for buying a fuel car in the last decade. You could blame those who use phones, Bitcoin miners are using energy, is it enough to be detrimental? Possibly, is it using any more than any other industry out there (at least major)? Nope.

Plus, I think the pandemic highlighted people's greed rather than Cryptocurrencies. I was sickened at times how people reacted to it, and how they tried to exploit it for personal gain. You might see that in Bitcoin now, and then. However, the majority are trying to escape the need to conform to capitalist ways.

1484  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: June 16, 2022, 09:53:58 PM
I am betting on Israel to win against Cannonier, he is younger, faster, has reach advantage, and I think he is more intelligent fighter.
I do expect fight to go all five rounds and Cannonier could win one or two rounds, but that whole fight card is sick and I can't wait to see some action.
I'll probably be going with Cannonier, at least betting wise. Prediction will be Izzy. I haven't checked if the odds are up yet, but I imagine it'll be heavily in favour of Izzy. I like Izzy, and I'll be wanting him to win. However, if I do lose...I win, right? That's my line of thinking, plus the odds on Izzy are usually extremely low. Like 1.20-1.40, probably be around there again. Alternatively, I might just give the fight a miss.
1485  Other / Meta / Re: Quick Question About Merit Fishing and Pre the Merit System on: June 16, 2022, 09:49:57 PM
Take a look at the Meta section back in the time period you want to know more about. The thing is, there has, and will always be something to complain about. I've seen users say it was better years ago, but really you'll find users complaining about it back then.

Spam, and low quality is sort of part, and parcel of having a large forum, especially when you combine different people from all sorts of walks of life. I think we're in a pretty good place, could it be improved, maybe? However, I'm not sure how we would go about that, without restricting everyone, which obviously should be refrained from if possible.
1486  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: June 16, 2022, 04:34:02 PM
I am fan of Izzy but weight difference is just to big for him, so I don't see him in light-heavyweight division, unless he puts a lot of muscles quickly.

Yeah, it was more of a comment on his dominance in his oroper weight class. I thought the step up was a little ambitious, and while it did take that zero off his record, I must say I do like to see fighters challenge themselves, and be prepared to lose. It was the weight though that made the difference.

Btw, we will see Izzy in just two weeks, on July 2 in a fight against Jared Cannonier at UFC 276. Prepare for funny trashtalk from Izzy on media. This is going to be a good fight, as Cannonier used to be in light heavyweight division. Good test for Izzy, as on the fight day, Cannonier will be much heavier that on weigh-in day Smiley
Yeah, looking forward to the fight, but I'm pretty nervous. Cannonier is a dangerous fighter. I'm always nervous in Izzy fights though, and at times he has made it almost laughable. Against Costa I was worried, but he pretty much nullified his game. I was worried against Bobby Knuckles recently, but honestly not so much, as I wouldn't have minded so much. Bobby nearly had it this time.

1487  Other / Meta / Re: Decline of Marketplace activity/trading on: June 15, 2022, 02:23:59 PM
I think this is more of a cultural issue than a moderation issue. There are a lot of people here that can reasonably be described as 'bitcoin maximalists'. There are a lot of people who will describe any altcoin as a 'shitcoin' without knowing anything about the altcoin -- to be fair, this is an accurate description for most altcoins. The only thing I can think of that the administration can do, would be to encourage people to have an open mind regarding altcoins.
Yeah, and to a certain point I can understand it. The majority are either outright scams, money grabs or just meme coins at this point. It doesn't really help that certain meme coins have been somewhat successful at reaching mainstream crypto users.

Personally, I'm not invested in any other cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. However, there's been a few interesting ideas out there, and while they may have failed, there's definitely potential that altcoins can be useful, even if its not for everyone.
1488  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Gambling Problem, Is it Possible to be a Thing of the Past? on: June 15, 2022, 02:02:48 PM
As long as people are poor, gambling will exist. As long as people have too much money, that they don't know what to do with it, gambling will exist. The short version is you aren't going to remove gambling, and therefore you aren't going to completely eradicate the problems associated with it.

Counselling is probably the best approach, although it's not pushed enough. I don't get the impression that most mainstream betting sites care about your well being. They care about how much you're giving them, and as soon as you start taking off of them, in a decent quantity at a regular interval, you'll be banned.
1489  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: June 15, 2022, 01:54:40 PM
Yeah, Jan takes it for me. Jiri probably doesn't hold onto it more than one title defense, and even them I'm not sure he'll be able to defend it once. At least the division is interesting, rather than just one guy holding onto it for a long time. I say the same about Izzy, which I'm a fan of.

Here's a free fight vid for Emmett just in case you guys don't know what kind of a fighter he is.  The guy has power and starches people.  It was surprising that Ige survived during their match.  But then again Kattar looks to me like he has an iron cast chin, so it'll be interesting to see how these guys match up.
It'll be a interesting match up in my opinion. I see it either going the distance with Kattar managing to stay safe enough or Emmet absolutely smashes him, and wins via KO. I'm probably not going to bet on that fight, too tough to call. If Kattar can keep the distance, and stay relatively safe I can see him winning comfortably on points, probably has the technical advantage.
1490  Other / Meta / Re: Decline of Marketplace activity/trading on: June 15, 2022, 12:59:09 PM
The lending section as pretty much been monopolised, but certain users. They offer low rate loans, and therefore you don't get as many threads as we used to asking, since they just go to the multiple services offering these low rate loans.

Lending a few years ago used to be crazy at times.

I think we need to start thinking about getting merits flowing in the altcoins boards..
They are real users and good users, they throw coin around, make coin flow, and are likely good advertising targets..
Probably. There's an absolute massive stigma of the Altcoin section though. I can't necessarily blame users for that, it is quite crazy at times. Definitely a lot of low quality content, but I think we're making a dent into things slowly. Also, a lot of scam projects which unfortunately put the users that post in that section under question at times, which probably shouldn't be the case.

I'd be interested to hear users opinions on what could be improved, to sort of remove that stigma.
1491  Other / Meta / Re: Are you a merit source? Thanks for your sacrifice. on: June 15, 2022, 12:54:28 PM
I wish our local board also had a merit source. Though recently that thread is getting spammy because of a bunch of new users but still many quality posts have been unmerited there because higher-rank local member usually doesn't show up there regularly. Maybe this is also a reason why our local members ignore the local board. As you have mentioned everybody wants some kind of reward which will motivate them to go back to that place again.
Report them up, and encourage some users to maybe apply to become a merit source. I mean, the worst that can happen is it'll be rejected/ignored. Obviously, reports always help, even if it's to signal to theymos that an additional moderator is required in a certain section.

About the reward, unfortunately I've learned that's pretty much the motivate for almost everyone. Regardless if it's Bitcoin or not. It's absolutely crazy what some people will do for a little extra cash. That's the way of life. Although, there definitely are individuals out there that are worth their weight in gold.
1492  Other / Meta / Re: [Statistics] OgNasty's Merit Faucet on: June 15, 2022, 12:48:32 PM
I thought so as well, even though I did get a ton of pushback and saw some threads making allegations that I was doing this for nefarious reasons (shocker, I know).  It isn't totally selfless though I will admit.  I've found that checking the newbies in that thread has allowed me to ignore a TON of spammers.  This pays dividends down the road as well, because those users will NEVER have the chance to get merit from me now.  Not to mention I'll never have to waste my time reading their posts.  From my perspective that's an awesome benefit and nearly worth the effort of the thread by itself.
The thing is, will it be abused by alternate account farmers? Undoubtedly. However, those types of accounts rarely get to rank up anyway, so whatever their objective is, which I'll be honest likely is bounty related, will be dealt with either via the trust system or moderation if appropriate. The fact that alternate farms will abuse it, means they could actually be a silver lining to it, giving us a list of accounts that could be monitored for abuse.

However, I know this wasn't your intention, and I quite appreciate the sentiment behind it. Those that will rank up anyway, get to learn something that they might not have interest in otherwise, and it'll teach them some key fundamentals about signing, verifying, as well as having a kick start into the forum. I personally don't have much of a problem with that at all.

It doesn't matter too much that the majority might not stay active in the long term, you couldn't possibly know that. Likely, these are the alternate account farmers who gave up, or simply legitimate users who don't want to participate long term in the forum, which is fine too.

Honestly, I think the damage that can be done via something like this is rather small, and it does encourage legitimate users. I don't have a problem with it personally. There's plenty of other comparable threads which offer merit for answering a question, this might even be more important, as I consider verifying signatures to be one of the most important factors, and also teaches them how to verify in general outside of Bitcoin.

1493  Other / Meta / Re: General Discussion about the Bitcoin Forum. on: June 14, 2022, 10:26:56 PM
One change I would make is adding some different color to announcements or flashing popup if something is really important, but that is probably not easy to implement in forum.
Maybe, colour. Not sure about the idea of making it flashing though, I imagine that'll have a lot of backlash. Plus, there's what you consider critical enough to have it basically distract users. It would probably have to be pretty critical, and at that point users probably already know of it. Although, I get most of my news from Bitcointalk, so I suppose others would be the same. I literally don't ever visit any Bitcoin news sites, and only occasionally check real news.

If people want to know the vulnerability of certain programs, they should probably consider signing up to the mailing list.
1494  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: June 14, 2022, 09:40:26 PM
Well, it is really time for her to let go, and from that interviews, Joanna Jedrzejczyk have confirmed that she was shocked by the power of Zhang Weili like she was a different fighter back in their 1st fight, Weili now has a vastly improved wrestling and training with Henry Cejudo has proven it on the outcome, and it can be a great help with other fighters in this division, and that Strength that Bothers Joanna Jedrzejczyk she has face a difference Zhang Weili,
Yeah, you can see it. Weili seems to be able to overpower most of her opponenet, and while they might be the same weight going into the fight, she looks massive on the actual night. I imagine she cuts quite a bit. What's actually quite impressive about her is her frame, she's just so big, and I can see why her opponents do struggle with that. She's also a crisp striker, so she's a well rounded fighter. I do like Weili.

I'd like to see her, and Rose again at some point. I thought Rose got lucky in the first fight, and I'm expecting a little push back from that. The second fight was obviously confirmation Rose has what it takes, but I just feel Weili could do better. Plus, I'll be honest with the stinker that Rose put on recently for the title defense, that really annoyed me. Glad she didn't win to be honest, otherwise it would've been even more annoying.
1495  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC price suddenly dropped from $ 31K on: June 13, 2022, 11:57:15 PM
6-7% drop is not so much something we should freak out.. right?
Some have cashed in, some speculated the NY situation... I don't find the situation that bad...

Let's see what happens before the week-end comes. If the price continues the downtrend, then may become something to worry, but imho we're not there yet.
I'm sure if we ran a survey now, we'd have some pretty contrasting opinions. A lot of people feel like they missed out on the lower prices of Bitcoin, yet this is a pretty nice entry point in my opinion. Thus, the survey would likely show those panicking, and losing faith in Bitcoin, and those that are hunkering down, and buying Bitcoin at prices they deem good.

If you're in Bitcoin for the long run, then this might just be the encouragement you need to acquire some more. I'm personally enjoying the; what I would speculate a temporary blip, to basically earn what I would be earning anyway, but simply getting more Bitcoin for my buck.

But, no. Knowing how volatile Bitcoin is, even a 20% drop wouldn't exactly kick the ol' anxiety into overdrive. Just part of using Bitcoin in its current state.
1496  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If you spend 1 satoshi a day, you will spend 1 BTC is 3 years, 2 months & 1 Day on: June 13, 2022, 07:31:50 PM
maybe he is playing reverse psychology to get people to think about how much people can actually use bitcoin daily and still not spend 1btc
Maybe. I do like the sort of thinking that you don't require one Bitcoin. A lot of new comers to Bitcoin are obsessed with getting to one Bitcoin, and take its current price as still out of their budget. Yet, they forget that there's denominations like a satoshi. I wish, we could to some extent re-educate the masses, and get that obsession with one Bitcoin out of their heads.

Although, it has to be said in this particular case one satoshi isn't going to get you very far in life. Certainly isn't going to put food on the table on a daily basis.
1497  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin making computers more EFFICIENT & powerful making the world save ENERGY? on: June 13, 2022, 07:28:54 PM
Pretty poor argument. Bitcoin isn't really making computers more efficient for one. The development of miners is somewhat separate as they're doing it for a particular purpose. General computers which run our money system, and most other industries are what you'd consider general computers, which don't need the processing power or the hardware that a miner or a gaming machine would need. So, the effect of Bitcoin on advancement of technology, at least when comparing general/personal computers is negligible.

However, BlackHatCoiner's argument is a little more compelling. No one's done the Math, because the data would be hard to collect, but it takes common sense to see how much our current mainstream currency is using to stay afloat. Especially, now we're making the move to digital money, rather than predominately physical money. Although, even the latter has some pretty harmful effects to the environment in itself.
1498  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If you spend 1 satoshi a day, you will spend 1 BTC is 3 years, 2 months & 1 Day on: June 13, 2022, 07:18:58 PM
Yeah, remotemass I'm not sure how you've come to that conclusion, but your Math is wrong somewhere. Franky's above is technically correct, ignoring leap years etc. Although, even with leap years, your Math is still a long way out.

Remember, that one satoshi is 0.00000001 of a Bitcoin. If you only spent one satoshi a day (which given fees is pretty much impossible) you'd take thousands of years to spend one Bitcoin. At the moment, it's not even possible to only spend 1 satoshi since you have fees. Maybe, if Bitcoin is altered to utilize further denominations in the future, it might be possible, but right now it isn't.
1499  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Less FOMO more Buying on: June 13, 2022, 07:12:55 PM
Alright, although this isn't FUD. When you invest in Bitcoin, you aren't guaranteed a return. as was once said by Benjamin Franklin "Nothing in life is guaranteed, but deaths, and taxes". That's true. Bitcoin is not a get rich quick scheme, and has a chance to not increase in value like it has in history. Remember, correlation isn't causation too, so when looking at charts, and speculating about price be careful.

What you are guaranteed with Bitcoin: No third party involvement, the chance to be your own bank, take care of your own security, determine what fee you want to pay (although, somewhat restricted by miners not including it in the block if it's too low), and freedom of spending your money, without your bank preventing you. If you want to use it for gambling, you can use it for gambling. If you want to use it to pay for groceries, there's services out there that allows that. If you want to pay for your rent with it, you'll have to contact your landlord.

Ultimately, what Bitcoin does provide is freedom. No, not the illusion of freedom that we've all become accustomed too, but proper freedom over your money. As above, you still have to pay your taxes, but other than that no one can tell you how to manage it or what to use it for. Obviously, a barring any illegal activity, but I think that goes without saying for the majority here.

Only wise investors seem to buy at a time like this.
Hmm, I wouldn't put it that way. I'd say those with less risk tolerance invest in times like this or perhaps a more biased view, would be those that believe in what Bitcoin stands for, rather than being wise.
1500  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Lost coins vulnerable to theft in the future? on: June 13, 2022, 06:54:53 PM
Totally agree with that. And Satoshi selling all his coins would be destructive as well.
But we assume it won’t happen (selling, not moving). But would it be the case for anybody else?
Would this selling pressure be recoverable?
Naturally, being a Bitcoin supporter I would lean to yeah. However, these things can be unpredictable, and it really does depend on what's happening in the world, and everyone's view on Bitcoin. There's just so many possibilities that could happen to benefit or even undermine Bitcoin.

What can be said, the idea behind Bitcoin works, and for me has the most appeal out of any other currency on the market. Will that change in the future, who knows.

Well, I suppose (and hope) that the UTXO set (or basically the "ownership database" in any future form) will be preserved even if there is a completely new technology and this new "system" moves the Bitcoin's UTXO set into it. But that is for another discussion Smiley
Yeah, although lets say that a hard fork did occur (either necessary or deemed the best choice) to escape this sort of scenario. Those on the old chain wouldn't be able to easily prove they owned the coins on the new chain. At least, I don't think there would be a easy way of doing it. Maybe, but probably beyond my understanding, at least at this stage. I thin we're still in the stage of thinking of thinking about solutions, since it's too far away right now that there's not a whole lot of urgency needed.

Whatever the circumstances, there's going to be a lot of split opinions when it comes to the proper discussion definitely. I don't want to see old coins released back in, and I don't want to see the destroyed. I probably am of the same opinion of o_e_l_e_o, but I'd rather see them broken into, and stolen than forcibly from a Bitcoin perspective force remove them or redistribute. There's too many worms, and not enough cans.
