861  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Keeping up with Bitcoin News- Credible Sources Needed To Save Time on: April 29, 2023, 06:07:06 PM
I don't really need to know the news the first couple of minutes/hours it comes in and I am mainly interested in bitcoin so a lot of times, the forum does the job for me. Thank you to all the members who kept me updated with their threads lol.

Another is reddit. I use it a lot so I've joined several bitcoin related subreddits and also made custom feeds to categorize them lol. OSS's news bot seemed good as well so I plan to sub when I've created a telegram account again.

Reading your post, op, I figured I should drop the thread about news aggregators we had last time, see: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5448024.0
862  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I have Traveled on all Thailand and Spending only Crypto! on: April 29, 2023, 01:20:30 PM
But its little much unbelievable that he really use pure bitcoin on his travel since bitcoin is not been announce as legal tender on that country so provably a bitcoin user in that place will struggle to find merchant accepts bitcoin as mode of payment. For sure there's fiat use in that travel since this is more convenient currency for now to used by any travelers.

OP worded it poorly. From the looks of it, they merely sold their bitcoins for cash so this isn't about merchants accepting bitcoin as a payment. In fact, last I heard Thailand banned it and I haven't seen any retractment of statement, see: https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/thailand-ban-use-digital-assets-payments-april-sec-2022-03-23/

864  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: I don't know if am right or wrong about this. on: April 28, 2023, 05:13:01 PM
Last week a friend of mine saw me trading so he tried to know more about it, at first I never wanted to tell him due to the risk involved, but then based of his persistence I first of all explained to him the difference between spot trade and futures, but I told him I do only spot, how  I buy low and sell high, even as I was explaining it to him I was feeling uncomfortable because of the risk.

I don't want a situation whereby someone will say that I scammed him if there is a sudden dip in the crypto industry, so I just told him to open a binance account and verify it, after then, he should get back to me so I can send him the hard copy of the crypto course I bought.
Uptil now I still feel uncomfortable about it, I don't know if am wrong or right for opening up, even though I told him of the risk involved.

Lol. I feel you. Logically speaking, you're not at fault if such situation occur but then again people can be unreasonable during tough times and no one wants that kind of drama in their life.

Honestly, you don't have to do something you're uncomfortable at. They may be your friend but that doesn't mean you'll do whatever they want, no? Try to sit down with them and be honest about your worries - that you feel burdened about the whole thing and would feel some kind of responsibility in case something goes wrong. If they still insist, then just make up an excuse like it's because you're not confident with your knowledge/skills or a flat you're just as newbie as them.
865  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where do I keep crypto after buying it? on: April 28, 2023, 01:25:55 PM
Go for an exchange! it'll be easier to background check on them since more people are using such platforms. I suggest looking up your chosen exchange's threads in bitcointalk by appending "site:bitcointalk.org" in your search engine.

For centralized and custodial exchanges, you can use these tools:

How to use: select your country and your preferred payment method.
Note: you will have to KYC in order to buy.

No kyc p2p platforms can be found in: https://kycnot.me/?cash=on but you'll have to opt out on credit cards.

866  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Google Ads data: $4M stolen through crypto phishing URLs on: April 27, 2023, 08:42:57 PM
Yeah, google search ads are infested with scams. Thankfully, ublock origin does a good job at omitting them from my search results. I use it on my PC and android phone - firefox, I suggest those who haven't tried it to give it a try, see: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock. Alternatively, there's also duckduckgo - search engine without ads.

Note: this doesn't mean that you should go around trusting whatever is in your first search result as I'm only talking about omitting ads on search results.

868  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [Discussion] MySecure on: April 27, 2023, 07:23:56 PM
Sadly, it's just a cheap copy-pasta of hodlhodl.com

First sign: Same website look as hodlhodl's previous one - this could be intentional since not everyone will remember hodl's previous UI specially new users. See this archive of hodlhodl's previous look: https://archive.is/KMftO

Second sign: Rephrased FAQ, ToS and terms and conditions.

Snippets:

1. From FAQ

Hodlhodl:
How secure is trading on Hodl Hodl?

The main priority of Hodl Hodl is keeping your funds and data safe.
Hodl Hodl does not process any private information, therefore there is no need to worry about your data. To start trading on our platform, you only need to provide a valid e-mail address and create a password.

Hodl Hodl does not have any access to your funds. During a trade, the bitcoins are locked in multisig escrow, which requires 2 (out of 3) keys to release the funds, which means that no transaction can happen without the signature of one of the contract parties, therefore, even if something happens to the trading platform, your Bitcoin will remain unaffected.
Mysecure:
Is it safe to trade on the MySecure platform?

The top priority of the MySecure team is to keep our users' funds safe.

MySecure does not process any personal data, so you don't have to worry about it falling into third parties. To start using the functionality that our platform provides, you only need to send us a valid email address and create a password.

MySecure does not have access to your funds. In transactions, all funds are stored on a multisig escrow, which requires two (out of three) keys for release. This means that without the signature of one participant, no transactions will be approved and your funds will remain intact even if the trading platform itself fails.

2. TOS

Logos of well known news outlets like coindesk, bloomberg, forbes, etc. are on their website as well but as expected, no articles can be found about them from the mentioned news outlets.
869  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Bybit to introduce mandatory KYC requirements starting May 8 on: April 27, 2023, 08:46:53 AM
Judging from the stuff I heard couple of months ago, knew their no-mandatory-kyc's time was near cause it seemed they were tightening their policies/protocols in the background.

First was when some newly created accounts were forced to KYC, see: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5414539.msg61390413#msg61390413
Second, they locked a couple of services for verified users, see: https://announcements.bybit.com/en-US/article/enhanced-kyc-policy-to-be-implemented-20after-dec-15-2022-bltf3d717c057f2a044/
Third was the facial recognition before withdrawing as pointed out by @/JeromeTash

Sadly, over time, more CEX is expected to switch to mandatory kyc.

871  Economy / Economics / Re: Investing Addiction. on: April 26, 2023, 10:52:10 AM
Now talking about investing, I think it is possible to become addicted to investing so much that it begins to affect your wellbeing, like the person stops spending on other important things like good food, good clothes etc. just so they can have more money to invest? Do you consider that kind of addiction dangerous and not good?

Depriving yourself of basic essentials like good food and stuff so much that it affects your well-being is counterproductive. What's the use of investing if you'll get sick before you can fully enjoy the fruit of your efforts lol.

A lot of people forget that we can invest in ourselves as well. For instance, if you try to keep your mind and body healthy, the chances of getting sick and paying ridiculous medical fees wouldn't be high.
872  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Does anyone know BXONE ? Need help : on: April 26, 2023, 09:23:45 AM
Where did you find the "good reviews" as I can't seem to find anything about this.

I did find a twitter account under @bxonejp, see: https://twitter.com/bxonejp. I found bxone.com from the link on their bio so I'm guessing it's them.

I crossed checked with FSA Japan and I coundn't find any bxone exchange registered with them, see: https://www.fsa.go.jp/en/regulated/licensed/en_kasoutuka.pdf

I don't think I would deposit a single cent on them...

EDIT:

About the reviews, were you talking about the twitter comments?
873  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Kucoin Twitter account hacked, $22k lost on: April 25, 2023, 11:57:18 PM
So practically, Google 2FA is the best? or one can even enable the three types of 2FA if possible, such as SMS, email, and Google 2FA?

Compared to SMS and email, TOTP/auth app is way better however, I suggest Aegis rather than Google Auth. It offers encryption, easier import/export function and less likely to be neglected by devs, see: https://getaegis.app/

Looks like you can enable more than one 2fa but I suggest not connecting any phone number in your account since it could be used to reset your password. It wouldn't be advisable to be careless about our passwords just because we have 2fa. I also suggest using an email provider where you can pair your account with TOTP.
874  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Anyone with UK Tax experience? on: April 25, 2023, 04:20:44 AM
Typically, tax payers use tax softwares to ease the load.

Since we're talking about UK, I recommend checking r/BitcoinUK's tax megathread. You'll find comprehensive guides, list of tax softwares and be able to discuss tax with locals, see: https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinUK/comments/ppf7k1/tax_megathread/

If you find the whole thing too complex and wanna err on the side of caution, you have the option of consulting a tax consultant, see: https://cointracking.info/law/

Side note: no blind trusting and exercise caution!
875  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Kucoin Twitter account hacked, $22k lost on: April 25, 2023, 02:44:08 AM
I don't know how their handle was hacked, isn't 2fa is forcedrequired to every verified handle in twitter? How is it possible though to breach 2fa?

Assuming it's not an inside job and the 2fa is not SMS, simplest way would be to launch a phishing attack to one of their twitter handlers. Even the strong password + TOTP combo would be rendered useless once an employee bites.

It's also possible the perps may just be mass sending phishing emails and SMS to leaked phone numbers/email and one of them happened to have access to kucoin's twitter account Cheesy
876  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Help] Newbie here. Is this website safe to use? on: April 24, 2023, 10:54:21 PM
I've heard of this scam scheme before with job offers and selling stuff.

Instead of asking for your bitcoin address, the buyer/employer will redirect you to some no-name exchange which they secretly own and type-in some 'numbers' on your account. In some cases these scammers will not stop with just getting you personal documents, they would ask for money as well e.g. you need to pay taxes to us.

The website seems to be inaccessible for some time, see: https://web.archive.org/web/20230000000000*/getcoinsmarket.com

I suggest staying away but if you're not convinced yet, a good middle ground approach is to: ask them if you could just give a bitcoin address for them to send the money to. Absolutely avoid signing up to some no-name exchange.

Here's a website for bitcoin wallets: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet - I recommend electrum.

EDIT:

Nvm the middle ground approach. On a second thought, I worry you could expose yourself to further mind tricks from the scammers if you engage in a conversation with them again.
877  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins, Telegram and Security on: April 24, 2023, 07:48:41 AM
Ooooh I've heard of this before. Looks like they're offering more service, thanks for the update  Cheesy

As for your question, I'll just treat it the same way I treat centralized and custodial platforms because they're in the same group. In addition, since they're still building up their reputation in the community, I'd also place them lower than already established CEXs.

There will be people who will try to get into your account so I suggest exploring your settings and enable anything that could improve security, particularly the "2fa password".
878  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: POST ALL PHISING SITES HERE (2023) on: April 24, 2023, 04:58:38 AM
I suggest breaking the links of the phishing websites you list to prevent the thread from becoming an extra backlink source for them and also accidental clicks - apparently this happens.

From your first example, the phishing website should become: syscoin.live or syscoin dot live
879  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: trading without fees on: April 23, 2023, 09:37:31 PM
Upcoming: Deribit is said to launch a zero-fee spot trading but they will only have 3 pairs, see: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5449522.0

Gate.io appears to still have zero maker fee, check latest announcement in: https://www.gate.io/zero-trading-fees

Note that both have mandatory KYC and these promos will ofc end at some point.
880  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [Warning] New way of scamming in telegram on: April 23, 2023, 03:41:27 PM
This is the strange part  Huh but it seems like a new feature, last I check months ago, there was no "nobody" and only "my contacts" and "everyone".
this shouldn't be a new feature and if it is, it is a stupid one, I mean, what's the point of having a privacy setting that doesn't allow other people to add you to their group if Telegram decided to add this feature.

Uh, might have worded that poorly lol. But I meant the feature where people can set who can add them in a group chat to "nobody". Because if they just recently rolled it out, there's a higher chance that it's not that stable yet - there could be bugs and whatnot.

But yeah, whatever the case, report to telegram i guess. Aside from the typical support channel, they also have this for bugs, see: https://bugs.telegram.org/
